If you want extreme closeups, you will have to get a macro lens. The Nikon 105mm VR Micro might work for you.

I want to move up to a better lens for my D3000.

I purchased a D3000 camera package with a AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6G IF-ED lens. It takes great outdoor action photos of softball games. I want to get another lens for closer closeups. Any suggestions?

The only option that is reasonably priced is the Nikon 55-300mm VR lens. Nikon does make an 80-400 lens that is much larger and cost about 4 times as much. Both have built in AF-S motors and will work with your camera.

The 55-300 is compatible with your camera and might be a better option than the 70-300 VR.

Kenko 2x Multiplier with 70-300mm on DX D80

So If i used this 70-300MM FX lens on a DX D80 making the lens a 105-420 then used a Kenko Teleplus 2x DGX 7-Element Teleconverter for Nikon AF between the body and the lens I could effectively have an 840mm lens for around $700-800?

It might work, but your aperature on the lens would be like F8 and your camera might have difficulty focusing. You might have to manually focus.

Will the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 55-200mm 1:4-5.6G lens work with a Nikon D70?
Will the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6G lens work with a Nikon D70?

Will this lens work on a D3000? I thougth only DX lens were compatable?

The d3000 requires a lens that has a built in AF-S motor. The Nikon 70-300 VR lens has a motor built in it, so it will work for your camera. The 70-300 VR is a pretty large and heavy lens so unless you really need the reach to 300mm you may what to opt for the Nikon 55-200mm VR lens.

What is a Nikon DX vs. just a DSLR?

I have been looking for a short range zoom lens for my D3100 DSLR. I see lenses for Nikon DX SLRs. Will those lenses fit my D3100?

NIkon DX refers to their crop frame sensors. The D3100 has a crop-frame DX sensor. The DX lenses are made exclusively for crop-frame sensors and will work great.
