Great general use prime lens!

Use this on my D800 and it focuses quickly and is very sharp. Some might be put off by "no VR" but this lens does not need it and I am able to get good photos of my kids indoors, one handed. Its a great buy and if you can get over not having a zoom lens you will not be sorry.
What's great about it: Superb sharpness, quiet operation.
What's not so great: lightweight, could be mistaken for being cheap
I would recommend this to a friend!

I have a d3100 and it came with the standard shooting lens- 18-55mm.

Im looking to be able to take portrait shots of my children and family. What lens do you reccommend?
For a high quality and inexpensive option I would get the Nikon 55-200 VR lens. I have used this lens and it is small, lightweight, and sharp.

I use to own a Nikon D90 and used the Nikon 55-200 VR lens. That lens is very lightweight and is sharp. If you need more reach you could go with the 55-300. The nikon 70-300 is a good lens and will also work with Nikon full-frame cameras if you go that direction in the future.
