400 dollar hair dryer worth it? probably!
on December 5, 2016

So, a 400 dollar hair dryer you say? For those that don't want to read much, here you go: If you have the budget, get it!
For those that like a little reading, here is some more:
Packaging: Its like an apple product. I couldn't wait to open this thing, Dyson packs their stuff wonderfully.
What you get: The hairdryer, 3 attachments, and a non-slip pad.
Features: This thing is amazing. It is very lightweight, and built very well. The handle has a bit of a grip to it, but not too much. There are 3 heat settings (4 if you count no heat at all), 3 fan settings, and a "cool burst" mode. Also has a 9 foot heavy duty cord
Use: Does it dry hair? Of course! The heat settings go from cold, to very hot (but not too hot to where you scorch your hair). The 3 speed settings are also great for styling. The attachments attach via a magnet (genius), and can turn 360 degrees for aiming. No more shoving a piece onto the end of a dryer, and having them break or eventually loose their grip. After using, hair does not feel coarse or burnt, but left feeling very nice and not full of static. Sound is also nice. Yes, it isn't pitch quiet, but it is very quiet for a hair dryer, and doesn't have the loud high-pitched squeal cheaper dryers have.
Not much else to say, except for my one gripe. I don't like that on the end of the power cord there is a power brick. It is located about a foot or so from the plug end of the cord, so it makes it awkward to coil the cord around the hairdryer for storage. It also makes the end a bit heavy hanging off of the wall. This is the tradeoff for having the hairdryer itself be light.

Noticeable improvement over other brush heads
on November 15, 2016

This review will be short and to the point, these brush heads are nice. There is a rubber coating on the backside of the head that aids in comfort. There is less of a chance of anything getting caught in the brush head that shouldn't get caught. My teeth feel noticeably cleaning after using these brush heads compared to other sonicare brush heads. They are a tad bit bigger though, so If you have a small mouth or are sensitive to that, keep that in mind.

Overall very good, with a quirk or two
on November 15, 2016
Posted by: Alex
from Minnesota
I have used previous sonicare toothbrushes in the past, and this one is pretty much exactly like the previous ones, but with the addition of the connected ability.
Whats in the box: The toothbrush, two toothbrush heads, charging stand and a travel case.
Features: Quite a few for a toothbrush. I'll skim over the basic parts. 3 different intensity settings, and 3 different cleaning modes, which basically changes the type of vibrations it uses. The connected features is what this toothbrush is all about, but it is a tad bit quirky. The toothbrush is very easy to connect to your phone, just download the app, push a button on the toothbrush to get it to light up, and its connected. You will need to set up a phillips account in order to get the app up and running on your phone. The app is fairly well laid out, and the main part of the app is a layout of your mouth. In order to brush "connected", you have to open the app, then turn on the toothbrush. The app divides your mouth into 6 parts, and you brush each part for 20 seconds. The toothbrush has built in gyros and accelerometers in order to know how it is angled, and therefore know which teeth you are cleaning. As you clean, the app will highlight which teeth you are supposed to be cleaning, and it knows how much pressure and movement you are using, and will correct you if you are doing something incorrectly. Once you have done your two minute brush, the app will let you know if you miss any spots, and will give you time to touch those up. A few other parts of the app include a points system (that I think are just for "feel good points"), where you earn points based on your brushing habits. It will also let you know when you need a new brush head.
A few quirks: If you leave the charger unplugged, as I usually do since the battery lasts so long, the auto paring of the toothbrush is a bit wonky, and it doesn't always connect to the app. It uses knowing when it comes off of the charger as part of the smart connecting feature, and if the charger is unplugged it doesn't know when it comes off. You can also "offline brush", or brush without the app open, but all you get is a log of if you brushed that day, and at what time, no other tracking of your brushing besides that.
So, with that, I would recommend this brush if you are in the market for a nice electric toothbrush, but I wouldn't rush to upgrade your current one if its working fine for you.

The difference between hearing bass and feeling thunder starts the moment you add this wireless bass module to the SoundTouch 300 soundbar. QuietPort™ technology and a highly advanced DSP virtually eliminates distortion and delivers surprisingly deep and clean sound from something so small.

Adds bass, but very pricey
on October 22, 2016

This is an add on subwoofer for the Bose Soundtouch 300 SoundBar. It is a very simple addon, with no fluff other than added bass. Lets get started:
First impressions: This has got to be one of the best boxed pieces of equipment I've ever owned. Seriously. To get a heavy object of a box is usually a carefully planned out and executed maneuver, that usually involved crushed toes and/or fingers. This subwoofer is heavy, as its made out of metal and glass (so it looks fantasic), and the box works as so: You open the outer box, and you fold out handles (I've attached a picture) You use those handles to pull the inner box out of the outerbox, you then take off one more piece, and PRESTO, the whole innerbox falls away revealing the subwoofer. Genius packaging by Bose.
Sound quality: This does add some much needed bass to the soundbar, but don't expect your whole house to shake. This subwoofer will round out the low notes, and make everything seem cleaner. I just don't know if I can justify 700 dollars for this, which makes a 1400 dollar soundbar system. You can adjust the level of bass from the remote, using a -2-0-+2 system, so essentially 4 levels of bass.
You will want to add this to your soundbar, as without it the sound is sub-par. With this subwoofer, the sound is pretty excellent for a soundbar system, but may be tough to stomach 1400 dollars.

The SoundTouch® 300 soundbar looks slim. But the sound? Anything but. That’s because every cubic inch of it is packed with technologies that make everything you listen to or watch sound clear and spacious. It starts inside with custom-shaped speakers that keep the profile low and pump out big sound. QuietPort™ technology virtually eliminates distortion so you hear surprisingly deep bass. And Bose® PhaseGuide® technology makes you believe you’re hearing sounds where there are no speakers. On the outside, the glass top and perforated wrap-around metal grille make the soundbar look as good in your room as it sounds. And with both Bluetooth® and Wi-Fi® technology built in, you can wirelessly stream music any way you prefer. ADAPTiQ® audio room calibration from Bose ensures the soundbar sounds the best it can in the space you put it. HDMI™ connectivity with 4K pass-through keeps your system compatible with the most current technology. NFC provides quick and easy pairing. The SoundTouch® app gives you simple control over your favorite music. Works together with other SoundTouch® speakers so as you go from room to room, your music goes along with you. Includes a universal remote so you can control your other devices, too. Available in Black

good build quality, good sound, a little pricey
on October 22, 2016
Posted by: Alex
from Minnesota
Lets start off at the beginning: This is a very expensive, high quality sound bar. You do get (mostly) what you pay for. Lets begin.
This is basically the Ferrari of sound bars. You do also pay Ferrari price.
Whats in the box: The soundbar (duh), every cable you need (which is a huge plus, many things you buy nowadays do not include the required cables) and a very nice universal remote control, and there is the headmounted microphone...more on that later. There is a basic quick start guide, but I HIGHLY recommend that you goto the Bose website to download the user manual, as you WILL be confused during setup, and the start up guide does not help very well. The build quality is excellent, with an all metal body and a tempered glass top. It looks sharp
Setup: Not as easy as I would have hoped. I am a self proclaimed tech geek (my wife and mom both call me a tech genius, so there's that). The quick setup guide does not really guide you through the setup very well. It will get you up and powered on, but not connected to Wi-Fi, or any Bluetooth devices. If you want to wall mount this, you need to purchase a wall mounting kit that is sold separately. You definitely will need this kit, as this soundbar is not light. Bose expects you to use an HDMI cord, attached to your TV that supports ARC. If your TV does not, the soundbar does have a passthrough HDMI port, with 4K support, but only one, so you can only hook up one box. There is also an optical audio in for those of you that live in a cave. I suspect that if you are buying a 700 dollar sound bar, your TV supports ARC.
Features: There is an app called Bose SoundTouch (yes, there is an app for that...which is your fancy soundbar), This app is where you can get your soundbar hooked into your wifi, and helps guide you through pairing a Bluetooth device. It also allows you to stream online music to your soundbar through Wi-Fi, from sources such as a generic "internet radio", and from places such as amazon music, iheartradio, deezer, Pandora, SiriusXM and more. Though you do have to have an account, they are not free or included with the soundbar. You can also stream from your Bluetooth device. This soundbar has very good virtual surround capabilities, and includes a microphone that you literally wear on your head so the soundbar can configure itself for your listening area. This process is done during initial setup, and takes about 10 minutes with you walking around the room to different places. I do wish that this supported Apple Airplay, or the Google version of that, but it does not. The only way to play music from your phone/tablet/whatever is to do it over Bluetooth. You can also do "locally stored" music from a network device, but that device has to support DLNA, so its not quite as simple as streaming from your phone.
Sound quality: Good, but I don't think 700 dollars good. It truly does sound like you have surround speakers, but there is a bit of a "tinny" sound to it, especially through Bluetooth or wifi. The sound of movies is much better, with a much fuller sound. To get the full "Bose" experience, you will want to buy the optional wireless subwoofer (for another 700 dollars). This will help fill out the bass, and is a separate review on its own, but the soundbar itself does have decent bass from such a small package. There are also optional 300 surround speakers, but I do not have them so I do not know how well they work or help out. I have another soundbar,(albeit 1/7th of the price), and this soundbar blows it out of the water sound quality wise....but it should.
So, the TL;DR version: Good build quality, setup is not as straight through as it should be, sound quality is good...but could be better. Doesn't support Airplay, but does support some wifi online services and Bluetooth. Buy the subwoofer.

Great for cleaning hard floors
on September 15, 2016
Posted by: Alex
from Minnesota
I have used this product to clean tile, linoleum and some small areas of carpet, and it has definitely met my expectations.
Lets start from the beginning:
Whats in the box: The cleaner (obviously), 3 brushrolls (2 multipurpose for all floor types including carpet, and a wood floor brush), multi purpose cleaner, hardwood cleaner, and a nifty tray that the device sits on while its drying so your floor doesn't get wet.
Build quality: Pretty good. The cleaner feels well built while using it, and the tanks and brush is very easy to remove to clean. Has separate tanks for cleaning solution, and dirty water. Also, to clean the brush it is very easy to remove, no tools needed.
Use: The cleaner has 2 modes, hard surface and carpet. The only difference between the two that I can tell is the amount of cleaning liquid that it dispenses while cleaning. I don't have hardwood, so I can't comment on the cleaning power of that. The way this device works is a hybrid of carpet cleaner and vacuum. Unlike a traditional carpet cleaner though, this cleaner sprays cleaning solution on the top of the brush, not directly on the floor. This way, the floor does not get unnecessarily wet, allowing it to dry much faster. You simply turn on the cleaner by pressing the hard floor or carpet button on the handle, and squeeze the trigger to get fluid moving. You then simply "vacuum" the floor while holding the trigger down. If you want, you can let go of the trigger and give the floor another pass to aid in drying time. Thats about it, very simple to use.
Cleaning after use: With a cleaner like this, expect things to get gross and dirty in a hurry. I cleaned my tile floors that appeared to be clean, and when I emptied dirty water tank, it was pretty much black. Plan to clean this after every use, otherwise it will get incredibly dirty very quickly. I used the sink with a spray head in my laundry room, and it took me just a couple minutes to disassemble and clean. Easy, but dirty (have you cleaned a carpet cleaner before? This is like that)
So, how did it clean? quite well! My floor felt freshly mopped, but they were dry almost instantly, and I did have the mess of water on my baseboards that mopping can give you. I also didn't have to lug around a bucket and wet mop either. I have used this to get out some pet stains (IE cat hairball) off of a rug, and this worked wonderfully, though do not expect to use this to shampoo an entire carpet, it just isn't built for it.
Overall: Works very well, and is easy to use. It is a pain to clean though, but any carpet shampooer out there is a pain to clean as well.

Very nice dock
on August 27, 2016
Posted by: Alex
from Minnesota
This new dock is perfect for someone that owns an iPhone and an Apple Watch. It provides for a nice all in one solution to charging both devices at night.
Features: The dock provides a built in charging puck for the watch, so no need to provide your own like on some other stands. The dock only has one power cord for a nice clean install. The lightning port on the dock is adjustable up and down to allow for many different cases on the phone. The lightning port is also spring loaded so you can tilt your phone forwards when unplugging the phone from the dock to make it easier.
Fit and finish: Excellent. The dock has a nice rubber feel where your phone and watch sits, so no metal on metal contact. The watch puck is also rubber around the edges so no worries of the watch getting scratched. The whole dock feels very well built, not flimsy at all and has a nice (but not too much) weight to it.
My only gripe is that it is a bit tough to line up the phone when putting it on the dock. I'm sure with practice and over time it will be easier for me to get the phone plugged in, but until then there is a little bit of hunting involved to get the port on the phone and the lightning port on the dock lined up.

great wireless headphones with ANC
on August 23, 2016
Posted by: Alex
from minnesota
I had been looking for headphones to use while mowing the lawn. I finally settled on the Beats Studio, especially during the sale!
Build Quality: Great. The ear cups are very soft, and the entire headphone feels very solid with a good finish. The fit and finish is great.
Features: The headphones are both wireless or wired (with the the wired portion removable). The headphones will fold up for storage, with a nice "click" when they are folding. Very solid, and doesn't feel like they are fragile by any means. The noise canceling feature is awesome. I use these for mowing the lawn, and there is a huge difference while wearing these. I have tested the ANC by turning the headphones on and off while still wearing them, and there is a VERY noticeable difference between on and off. There is also an ANC only mode, which is stronger noise canceling than when listening to music, but I have never used this mode as I always listen to music.
You can also take phone calls from the headphones. If you receive a phone call while wearing them, you will hear the ringtone in your headphones and you can answer by just pressing the "B" button on the outside of the headphones, and talk. It uses the noise cancelling microphones that are built in. Very nice.
There are a few buttons on the headphones: Power, volume up and down, and a "B" button which is multi purpose. Play, pause, skip forward or backward, or answer a phone call.
Overall, great headphones with great wireless sound. Battery seems to last quite a while, as advertised.

great for the price
on July 6, 2016

I have used this computer for a couple weeks now, and overall I'm happy with it, here is a general review:
Build Quality: It has a nice aluminum shell, with a rubber bottom feel to it. The keyboard and trackpad feel very nice for a computer in this price range. The backlit keyboard is a nice touch
Screen Quality: Not bad. You can tell it is a lower end computer, but the screen is not bad either. There is some light bleed on the edges, but that is not unexpected for a computer in this price point.
Performance: Again, not bad. I have had the computer lock up on me when just browsing the web, but I think a lot of that performance has to do with Windows 10 and not the hardware. I actually did get a Windows Blue Screen of Death on day two, but again I don't point that at the computer itself.
Design: I love the 3 ways you can use this device. As a normal laptop, as a tablet, and as a table top touch screen computer. If you fold the screen all the way back, it acts as a tablet (and windows automatically goes into "tablet" mode) If you fold it backwards, but stop at an angle, the screen is propped up on a table, in tablet mode. This is probably my favorite mode to use it in. I feel that the device is just too heavy to use as a tablet, but resting on a table using the touch screen is nice.
Battery life: You can easily get several hours out of this, but don't expect all day usage. Also, the battery is not user replaceable. So you cannot swap it out for a charged one, nor replace it if it goes bad without sending it in to Acer.

overall great tablet for the money
on June 18, 2016
Posted by: Alex
from Minnesota
I received this tablet about a week ago, and here are my findings. For the price: excellent. Is it perfect? No. Did I expect perfection out of a tablet of this price? No.
Screen:
The screen quality is spot on for a budget tablet, better than expected. The only issue I have with the tablet in general is a glare off of the screen. Sometimes in certain light it is impossible to use. I can use other tablets (albite much more expensive tablets with anti-reflective glass) in the same light with no issues.
Battery life: Good. Not as good as more expensive tablets, but again...great for what you are buying. I easily get a few days of general use out of it.
Performance:
For basic games (plants vs zombies is my test game) it performs well. Touch screen is responsive, and the load times are acceptable. There is some lag when using the pinch to zoom gesture on many apps, Chrome and Maps for example. I did have the tablet completely freeze on me for a few minutes in Chrome while swiping through a feature rich website.
Camera: Decent. You won't be taking wedding pictures with this tablet. It has all the normal Android camera settings and features, which is nice, but no flash, and the quality is decent.
Build quality: Good. Plastic feeling, but not overall cheap feeling. It does feel solid in your hand, but obviously not nearly as solid as other brands aluminum and glass tablets (that cost 7 times as much).
Overall: For a budget tablet, it is a great buy. If you want to do serious gaming, don't think about it. For email, web, small games...it is perfect.
