Reasonably Priced Solution
on February 13, 2023
Posted by: Balthazar2k4
HP has a long, storied history of inkjet printers. I have had several of them, but had since moved on to the more costly color laserjet line. Why? Well, ink cartridges have always been a pain if you were doing any volume of printing above the occasional shipping label or photo. The biggest downside to inkjet until now. This printer takes a different approach by utilizing a holding reservoir that you fill as needed. The reason this is a plus over the individual cartridges is that the reservoir can hold considerably more ink and allows for far less time consumed playing the ink changing game. The ink supplied is supposed to last two years according to HP, but I have no way to know just how true that claim is. Time will tell I suppose, but past cartridges and prematurely dried ink leave me a tad skeptical.
Enough about the ink, this printer outputs great color photos, documents, and just about anything else you can throw at it. The one downside is the lack of double-sided printing I have become accustomed to with my laser printer. I can only assume that is because the ink must dry first. Overall, text was sharp and I experienced no runs or paper jams so far.
The scanner is a simple flatbed so no document feeder or double sided scanning, but if you are only needing the occasional scan this will do the trick. Great color, resolution, and speed with my Mac over wifi.
Overall, this printer solves one of the biggest issues with inkjet, well, in theory anyways. Time will tell as to how durable it truly is as liquids and mechanical equipment can provide mixed results. Time in between prints could cause clogging issues as ink could dry. Not to mention the overall mechanics of the inkjet having to go back and forth across the paper to print. All I can say is that in the three weeks I have been using it, it has worked like a charm.

Works Well Enough
on December 19, 2022
Posted by: Balthazar2k4
Security software is always a tough one to assess in the short term. I have been using Bitdefender Premium Security for about 3 months now and I can say it has been a success. I am running the software on my Mac Studio and MacBook Pro and thus far both machines are still running great. The software has a low resource overhead and hasn't caused any kernel panics or other showstoppers. The manual scan function has been sporadically problematic. I have had it just hang on the scan and never complete. Recent updates seemed to have addressed the issue and I have experienced this far less. The software has most of the quality of life components you would want including safe lists and exclusion zones. If you are on a Mac you can also have it protect Time Machine backups as well.
On the VPN side, well, that one is a little easier to qualify. The VPN works well from the perspective of protecting and obfuscating traffic. The downside, for me at least, is the bandwidth is pretty restrictive. I am on symmetrical gigabit fiber and had my throughput drop to a fraction of the speed. This is not something one would want to use if download large files. Works well enough with standard web traffic though.
There is also malware and website filtering for the browser. Seems to work, but I never really had any severe issues prior to the install though as I am a relatively savvy user and generally know what to stay away from. Honestly, ones best protection is don't just click every link you see and exercise a little common sense.
Overall, Bitdefender has a solid security offering. It is priced right and isn't a 'heavy' product that will bog your Mac down. I can only attest that I haven't had any security compromises so it must work well enough.

Great for Espresso, Good for Coffee
on October 23, 2022
Posted by: Balthazar2k4
The De'Longhi Magnifica Evo coffee and espresso machine is a good value if you like your coffee like I do. That said, I also own a Jura E6 so the Magnifica Evo faced some stiff competition in my kitchen, but it is important to note the Jura is nearly twice the price too. Setup and install is pretty easy. Especially so if you have used any similar style self grinding coffee maker. The first thing of note is that there is no display on the unit so it isn't as intuitive to use as one might expect. There are individual indicators on the unit for things like tank empty, empty grind tray, and strength. The machine will make lattes, espresso, coffee, etc. I primarily used it for just straight coffee, but I did use the milk frother a couple times too. I will say the coffee made was pretty great with the out of the box grind settings. Over the course of the last three weeks I have used three different beans and all have turned out great in the machine. The crema it produces is about as good as a barista could make and on par with the Jura. Making a latte is pretty easy too with the milk tank attached to the unit. Fill the tank and hit the latte button and away you go. I love lattes, but the cleanup is just too much of a pain for me. Even though cleaning this machine is easy by pulling the milk tank off and rinsing it, as well as, pulling the drip tray and grind tray. The problem is that lattes make this a daily affair or you can expect the unit to become a science experiment with growth thanks to the milk. So why only 4 stars? Well, simply put it really isn't focused on volume. The tank is relatively small and most of what it outputs even at max settings are lower volume. Not to say you can't just hit the button twice, but the tank size will quickly remind you that it would prefer you just make an espresso instead. So for me, the Jura goes back to my primary coffee machine and I will use the Magnifica Evo for speciality drinks. If you aren't a high volume coffee drinker then this machine might fit the bill. While seemingly expensive it is actually reasonable for the quality of beverage it produces.

Great Idea Limited
on October 17, 2022
Posted by: Balthazar2k4
The Hyperice Venom Go is an interesting product that almost fulfills its promise. It is compact, light, and relatively effective, but has some caveats that should be considered. First off the the device works pretty well for soothing aching muscles. The device offers three different vibration modes and three different heat settings. Even at the lowest heat setting it gets pretty warm. I tried it on max a couple times, but depending on where you place the device it might be too warm. Fortunately, you can change the setting after you place the device on. The initial pack of three pads nets you about 60 uses. I suppose that's decent, but replacements are rather spendy if you plan to use this device a lot. Pad placement is also a challenge for certain spots. I wanted to use it on my shoulders near my neck and found it difficult to get it placed with even contact. The pad to device contact is magnetic and the field was strong enough that after three uses it stripped one of the metal contacts out of the pad. Fortunately it still made contact when I tried using the pad again. Does make me wonder if you can really get the 20 uses out of each pad though. Next, the battery life isn't spectacular. I used the device fully through two 10 minute cycles before needing to charge it again. I was using the vibration and heat so I am sure one can improve battery life if on the go by dialing things down some. Overall, the Hyperice Venom Go is a neat idea, but the longevity, placement issues, and pad quality do make me question its value. It might be something to take a look at if you are heavy into fitness and find yourself with sore muscles afterwards, but just make sure you are near a plug if you do.

Still the King
on October 17, 2022

The new Escort MAX 360c MKII is a continued extension of the venerable MAX 360 line which in my opinion are the cream of the crop in radar detectors. I came into the MKII from the original which I had been using for about a year. The original 360c was a life saver during my stint of back and forth trips to Texas from Colorado bi-weekly. It had saved my proverbial bacon on more than one occasion as I tend to have a fairly heavy foot. The new MKII seems to be mostly a range improvement from the original which if you are buying a radar detector that is of supreme importance. It is pretty much impossible for me to ascertain if the range is really as improved as they say because the original was fantastic and this seems just as good. The unit can tell you the signal intensity, frequency, and direction it is being detected from. Please hear me when I tell you that the importance of its ability to know which direction the radar is being detected cannot be overstated. It really is fantastic and should not be missed. The radar detector can also connect to wifi or bluetooth for additional insight. The app on my iPhone works well and the only thing I run into is sometimes having to restart the unit to get it to connect to the app. Doesn't happen all the time, but it can feel like a bit of inconvenience when you don't realize it didn't connect and you have to jockey through the reconnect steps. The app brings added features such as posted speed limits to most roads and can provide overspeed warning through the unit. I have found a few roads in my subdivision that it doesn't know the speed limit on, but that isn't a deal breaker by any means. The app also crowd sources data from other users for speed traps and will alert you well in advance if one is nearby with a direction and range indicator on the actual unit screen. Overall, the latest Escort MAX 360c is among the best if not THE best radar detector on the market. Pricey sure, but my experience has been that the you get what you pay for in this area. Easy recommend and can pay for itself after a few missed calls.

Outstanding Choice for Allergy Sufferers
on October 17, 2022
Posted by: Balthazar2k4
I have been using the Shark 3-in-1 Max Air Purifier for about 2 weeks now and I can say with certainty it has made a positive impact on my bedroom. I suffer from a host of allergies and spend much of my time with sinus issues as a result. I got the Shark Max unboxed and placed into the corner of my bedroom in just a few minutes. It is pretty big and the black finish does stand out in my lighter colored room, but it is livable and wouldn't necessarily dissuade me from buying it. I do wish there was a white/cream option though. As a note my bedroom is about 400 sq.ft. so well with the "cleaning" power of the unit. I turned the unit on and after the initial startup it gave me an air quality measurement of 88%. Not super surprised given where I live and the carper in my bedroom. After several hours it read 100% and I was excited to see if I can could tell the difference. My first night with it wasn't any different than my previous without. Fortunately, the unit is pretty quiet and didn't distract my sleep. After several more evenings with it I found I woke up in the morning with less sinus congestion and pressure. After two weeks with it I feel like it has made a real impact on my quality of life. I wake up feeling more refreshed and less stuffy. Maybe another air purifier could have done the same for me, but the Shark 3-in-1 Max has been great and is an easy recommend for those with allergies. I briefly tried the fan and heat options, but given the weather where I live the heater was definitely not necessary. Even given the 4000cu.ft. of space in my bedroom it warmed it up nicely and it is nice to know it is there if I need it. The fan feature is exactly what you expect. It blows the air already in the room and does not provide any additional "cooling". Overall, I love the unit and can easily recommend it. The price is right and the features are great for the money. Shark products generally are reliable and I am keeping my fingers crossed this falls in line. Curious to see how long the filter will last given my air quality and how much cleaning it is having to perform.

Welcome Back Linksys
on September 16, 2022
Posted by: Balthazar2k4
Linksys has had a mixed history with wireless routers. Having changed hands over the years their routers took a hit in quality, features, and general performance. While I have only been using the new Hydra Pro 6 AX5400 for a couple weeks I am happy to report that Linksys seems to be on the path to recovery.
The new Hyrda Pro 6 uses a mesh approach for rapid expansion if a single unit won't cut it. I have found that in a 1500sq ft environment a single unit works great. I have no dead spots and throughput using my iPhone 13 Pro Max as a tester was stable both up and down with the unit placed in the middle of the floor plan. The radio supports full 160MHz channels using DFS.
The router features the standard features expected such as guest network control, QoS, and parental controls. This is very much a consumer grade router as more advanced features such as VPN and RADIUS do not exist. Also, the LAN ports are all gigabit so look elsewhere if you need something faster. That said, it does offer external storage support which is nice for small NAS application. I did not test the USB throughput so I cannot attest to how good it would actually work.
For me, aside from wifi throughput the single most important aspect I want in a router is stability. So far, the Hydra Pro 6 has not let me down. I have not had to reboot the router once since I hooked it up and I also haven't noticed any oddities such as random reboots or dropped wireless.
Overall, Linksys appears to have a winner on its hand with stable AX performance in a compact, stylish package. Easy recommend.

Another Fast Entry in the WD SSD Stable
on September 4, 2022
Posted by: Balthazar2k4
The new SN850X is another fast PCI-E 4.0 SSD in the Western Digital line-up. After a quick install into my Threadripper 3970X with 64GB RAM on a Zenith II Extreme Alpha I did some performance measurements of the SN850X (1TB) vs a pair of Corsair MP600 (2TB) SSDs in the same system. Under Windows 11 using AS-SSD I recorded the following:
SN850X (1TB, Gen 4)
Sequential Read: 5316 MB/s
Sequential Write: 5396 MB/s
4K Read: 73 MB/s
4K Write: 186 MB/s
MP600 (2TB, Gen 4)
Sequential Read: 4269 MB/s
Sequential Write: 3830 MB/s
4K Read: 73 MB/s
4K Write: 189 MB/s
The tale of the tape shows the SN850X outpaces the MP600 in straight-line performance, but in random 4K situations is pretty much a dead match. The simple fact is the SN850X is extremely fast and a great price-to-performance ratio. I have an SN850 (non-X) in another system that is used as a daily driver OS drive and it has shown great reliability. If you are in the market for a Gen 4 NVMe drive I would feel comfortable placing Western Digital's newest SSD on my shortlist.

The MSI Delta 15.6" is a bit of a quandary to me. I went in expecting reasonable gaming performance and relatively poor battery life. What I got was great gaming performance and poor battery life.
Build: This is one area that I give MSI kudos. The machine feels great and is well put together. Minimal flex and sold keyboard platform. Display lid is a little flimsy feeling and that can be attribute to the hinges on the end. Overall it feels great and is reasonably light (for a gaming laptop).
Processor and GPU: At no time did I think to myself "Gosh, I wish it had Intel". The Ryzen R7-5800 does a great job and is a solid performer. The machine feels snappy and tasks do not feel bottlenecked by it. The 6700M is a beast for the money. Everything I threw at it (AC: Valhalla, Deathloop, Control, etc) played above 60fps at 1080p. Granted there wasn't much that could stress the display unless you turned quality settings way down. Overall, the 5800/6700M combination is a beast.
Display: The screen looks good with minimal vignetting and flashlighting. Great color with minimal overshoot. The difference between 120Hz and 240Hz is real and despite the fact the human eye is not capable of 'seeing' the refresh rate it is pretty obvious the brain can.
Battery life: I'm not sure it truly matters when looking at a gaming laptop. Most know that this isn't going to be the best by any stretch of the imagination. I was able to eek out 4 hours with basic tasks (internet, Excel, etc.). Don't even waste your time trying to game while on the battery.
So... why only 4 stars if it is such a great performer... well, it's loud. Really loud. All the time loud. The fan never stops. That's the rub with the 5800/6700M... heat. The thin build coupled to a pair of hot processors simply can't defeat thermodynamics. Unfortunately, MSI takes the approach of cool over quiet which makes sense to prevent throttling, but if you want to use this machine for anything other than gaming you might reconsider or buy some good headphones.
Overall, the machine is pretty darn good. Better than I expected. Just wish it didn't sound like I left the hair dryer on while using Chrome.

Easy AirPlay 2 Solution fro Existing Systems
on December 2, 2021
Posted by: Balthazar2k4
from Frisco, TX
Belkin's SoundForm Connect is an easy way to bring AirPlay 2 capability to an existing audio system. In my situation I added the SoundForm Connect to my high end system in my listening room. Most high end audio gear does not include AirPlay 2 (or any streaming) capability at all. I plugged the adapter into my PS Audio DirectStream DAC via an optical cable. Setup was a cinch thought the HomeKit app on my phone and we were off to the races in just a couple minutes. I did try Belkin's app for setup, but never could get the app to see the adapter. Once the SoundForm Connect was active on my network I sent some music from Apple Music to the DAC to check it out. The adapter worked without a hitch. Audio sounded great from the optical connection. Not much one can say other than I experienced no audio dropouts or network issues over the course of the album I streamed.
My biggest wish would be true bit perfect audio from the device, but I believe this is a limitation of AirPlay 2 itself. As it stands, everything sent is output at 16-bit/48Khz regardless of what the source material is. Does it matter? Well, depends on what you are using for playback. When I playback a song via Roon at even CD bandwidth (16-bit/44.1Khz) I do notice the audio loses some of the artificial 'edge' the resampled version gets via the SoundForm Connect. I hope Apple brings native playback to the table at some point, but that will probably be AirPlay 3 if ever. For now, the SoundForm Connect brings AirPlay 2 to my system in a compact convenient package. That is all it is supposed to do and Belkin did a great job (minus the flaky app) bringing that convince to market.

Are these noise cancelling for gyms that play really loud music?

They do not offer active noise cancellation. They do however provide pretty decent passive noise cancellation if you can get them snug in your ears.

Glossy with an anti-glare finish. Does a reasonable job with reflections, but is no match for a matte screen.

No. The AQ10 dry box is pretty small. Maybe an iPhone 4 or possibly a 5.

I have a Comcast modem going to a apple time capsule for wifi. Can this be installed after that and still give me access to time capsule and increase speeds?

Yes, the Orbi router can be placed into Access Point mode and used to extend your existing network.

How much are the Satlelites and are/when they available? My home is 4200 square feet. W/2000 square feet of finished basementnd I need all 3 floors covered. I know 2 cant cover 6200sqft. But one on each floor might. Also can each work being cat6 wired in

Three units (including the router itself) should have you covered assuming you can place them roughly center on each floor. Unfortunately, the satellites cannot be wired in at this time, but I do believe Netgear is looking at the situation. I am using the router and a single satellite in a ~4000sq ft home with a finished basement and it works great even with the satellite being connected wirelessly. Keep in mind the Orbi system uses a dedicated 5ghz channel as a backhaul so it does not work like a conventional router/extender combo.
