Another Excellent Corsair Mouse
on January 24, 2020

For me the battle always comes down to Corsair and Logitech when purchasing a wireless gaming mouse. The Corsair Dark Core RGB Pro is another excellent iteration in the Dark Core line of mice. The PixArt sensor is top-of-the-line and allows for user adjustment up to 18,000DPI. Coupled with the SLIPSTREAM wireless connection and this is one lightning fast mouse. The nice thing is that it can also be connected via Bluetooth is you want to maybe travel with the mouse and not carry the dongle around yet keep it wireless. Build quality is always first rate and it is relatively lightweight (which could be a pro or con depending on your preference as it isn't user adjustable). Also a big fan of the thumb rest which keeps me from dragging my thumb on the pad during long sessions. More RGB lighting than you can shake a stick at if that's your thing. Battery life does take a noticeable hit with it on though so I play with it off and see over a week's worth of playtime before needing to charge. Overall, this is a top quality mouse at a very reasonable price. Definite recommend from me.

Gaming Keyboard Excellence
on January 17, 2020

The Logitech G513 with tactile mechanical switches is a great all around keyboard. It is very well built and has a great premium feel thanks to the brushed aluminum deck. It's a rigid and stable typing platform. The tactile switches have great travel and a satisfying feel without being overly 'clicky'. If you like loud keyboards this probably isn't it. That said, I use it for both gaming and productivity tasks and it is great at both. There is a pass-through USB port on the backside as well which is nice if you are using a wired mouse or possibly a USB headset. The lighting effects are assignable through the gaming software and can be synced to a Logitech RGB mouse. Overall RGB effects are good and the LED output is bright and vivid.
Overall, the Logitech G513 with tactile switches is a top-of-the-line keyboard that can satisfy most gamers and serve a dual function with productivity tasks. Keep the G513 on your short list of choices.

Nice Package for Home/Office Use
on December 25, 2019
Posted by: Balthazar2k4
from Fort Collins, CO
Dell has a solid all-in-one package with the Inspiron 5490. Dell has armed the 23.8" 1080P IPS touch-screen display with an embedded Intel Core i7-10510U that offers solid quad core, hyperthreaded performance for basic to medium complexity tasks. This machine is not some kind video editing workhorse or video gaming monster. It will however surf the web, run Office, and playback media with ease.
The overall unit is very compact and stylish. By placing the legs wide the keyboard can be slid underneath to make more room on a desk or counter. It also has 3 USB-A 3.0 ports, 1 USB-C, 1 USB-A 2.0 port, and an HDMI input and output on the back. Last, but not least, it does have gigabit ethernet to complement the wireless connectivity.
The display offers good color reproduction thanks to the IPS panel, but contrast does suffer. Black level isn't the greatest, but still a solid showing. Overall display uniformity was very good on mine. Brightness is average, but could stand to be a tad brighter. In my office with a great deal of ambient light it doesn't feel very bright at maximum setting. The 1080P resolution at 23.8" is right at the edge of what I consider acceptable in terms of pixel density. It is certainly not as sharp as I would like it to be, but still very usable so not really a complaint. The only real complaint I do have is around the anti-glare coating. It is a bit too heavy in my opinion which leads to somewhat fuzzy text. I have certainly seen worse, but my LG 4K panel is far better.
The processor, 16GB of RAM, and 512GB SSD provide a very robust, speedy system so overall performance is great and considering what the expectation of this computer's use would be it is spot-on. Geekbench 5.0.4 reports the 10th gen processor single core performance 1246 and multi-core at 3391. To put this in perspective, my 9900K gets 1323 on single core and 9248 on multi-core. Keep in mind the 9900K has twice the core count and clocks faster. So the quad core processor does an admirable job given it is an ultra low voltage part. AS-SSD reports read/write performance of the SSD at 1609MB/s and 795MB/s. So far from the speediest of NVME drives, but significantly faster than a traditional SATA SSD or conventional hard drive. The system feels plenty snappy and I really have no complaints regarding performance.
The built in speaker does a respectable job in both output quality and volume. It isn't a full-on replacement for a good set of speakers, but if room is a premium they will do just fine for most use cases.
The all-in-one is equipped with Bluetooth and 802.11AC WiFi. I did see some issues with the WiFi reconnecting after bringing the computer out of sleep. Sometimes I would have to restart the wireless adapter to get it to connect. Strangely it isn't a consistent problem so I am not entirely sure what the cause may be.
The included mouse and keyboard are both wireless and white to match the computers aesthetic. I am not really a fan of either as the mouse is too light for me and the keys on the keyboard are very mushy. I would look at upgrading both to something more like the Logitech MX wireless peripherals.
Overall, the Dell Inspiron 5490 is a solid all-in-one with the chops and style to be a long term member of most any family for day-to-day use. If you need something more heavy duty look elsewhere, but that wasn't what Dell intended here either. The 5490 does a great job of being the everyday machine.

Best Coffee I Have Made At Home
on November 27, 2019
Posted by: Balthazar2k4
from Fort Collins, CO
I'm no coffee expert. No one would confuse me as a barista. That said, if you came over to my house and I made you a cup of coffee you might think I was. The Jura E6 has been life changing from my morning coffee routine. I have been using Keurig's for years and have tried other coffee/espresso makers with integrated grinders such as the Breville BES870XL. The E6 is on a whole different playing field than anything I have tried before. Granted, it comes at a price, but if you are serious about your coffee then you may be willing to accept the cost of entry.
Out of the box it is a substantial, yet compact machine. Takes up fairly minimal counter space for a machine of this caliber. Setup is pretty simple and requires minimal assembly. You first do a water hardness test using the included test strip so that you can dial it in and also make the determination if you want to use the included water filter. My water is VERY soft, but I decided to use the filter anyways. I then dropped the beans into the hopper on top and away we went. I first started with a 'basic' cup of coffee. I don't use cream or sugar in my coffee so I can absolutely taste the difference in beans, machines, water quality, etc. All I can say is that the cup of coffee I made using Starbuck's Sumatra beans was frankly far better than anything Starbuck's had made me. It was smooth, had great body, and not bitter at all. It was the best cup of coffee I have ever made in my house. Now I can't really take any credit as the E6 did all the work, but Bravo Jura! Bravo! Additionally, you can make cappuccinos and espresso. The former can be done with the included milk receptacle that connects to the side of the machine to produce beautifully frothed milk. The best part is that it is easily detached and can then be stored in the refrigerator until the next use. Cleanup is also a cinch. Pull out the tray at the bottom, empty the grind receptacle, rinse everything out and you are off and running again. I clean the machine each evening and I drink multiple cups throughout the day. It will also let you know if you need to empty the grinds.
Operation in general is pretty easy. You can connect via bluetooth to the machine and control general settings and beverage settings too. Fine grain control over strength, water usage, and temperature is available. You can also make a cup remotely, but given that the unit cleans itself on the first cup I question the value of that. I also wish it had an auto-on timer in the morning, but given the speed in which it makes coffee from a cold standstill I can't truly complain. In fact, I think it is faster than my Keurig from a cold start.
Grinder works impeccably and the grinds found in the receptacle are compacted little discs of consistent quality. This is truly bordering on commercial grade quality. Jura also has a two year, 6,000 cup warranty which is excellent. It's a nice added peace of mind when purchasing a coffee maker of this caliber and expense.
As I stated at the beginning, if your morning, afternoon, or evening coffee is important to you then I can't recommend the Jura E6 highly enough. I can't imagine life without it now.

Too Unstable
on November 27, 2019

I have been seeking an AX router for a while now. I first tried the Netgear RAX200. It worked OK, but wouldn't give me my full internet bandwidth on the wired ports so I returned it. When the opportunity arose to give Arris SURFboard mAX a try I thought it sounded pretty great. And it was. For less than a day.
The SURFboard mAX modules are relatively compact cylinders and each offers 4 wired gigabit LAN ports at the bottom. Setup is pretty simple via the app which is available for both iOS and Android. I should point out that this system can ONLY be accessed through the app. There is no web based portal. While I was disappointed to see that it wasn't a deal breaker. Got the system setup in less than 5 minutes with the one module upstairs and the other in the basement approximately 25' away.
Performance initially was incredible. I saw speeds in the basement I had never seen before. Using an AX adapter on a desktop PC in my son's room we saw speeds right up to the limit of our ISP service (over 500mbps). My son has NEVER seen speeds like that in his room coupled with the lower latency he was ecstatic. Coverage in the house was excellent and with 30+ devices on the network it everything seemed to be humming right along. And then, it wasn't.
After a couple hours overall service started to get spotty. Devices would randomly drop off the network. Speeds would plummet. The devices would reboot randomly. Tried resetting several times and service remained spotty. This is using the latest firmware so there isn't really much else that can be done. It truly is unfortunate because when it works, it works very well. The lack of consistent performance however meant that the network was disbanded after two days of listening to my kids yell at me.
I believe Arris is on to something, but they need to sort out their software first. Until then, I simply can't recommend it.

Still the Best

The Logitech MX Master 3 is the next in a line of top of the line wireless mice. It is aimed at more of the productivity crowd as it doesn't have the lowest lag or highest DPI sensor, but it can absolutely still be used for gaming if you aren't into competitive gaming.
It is a larger design that conforms well to the hand, is well-built, and works flawlessly. It can pair between 3 devices via bluetooth or the included 2.4ghz dongle. I use it between my Macbook Pro and desktop PC with ease.
I would be remiss to not mention the scroll wheel is a piece of art. It is on a magnetic bearing and operates like butter. It can operate in a free run mode or with clicking stops if on so chooses. I've never raved about a scroll wheel before, but Logitech really went out of their way on it.
Battery life is great and finally had to charge it after two weeks of heavy use. I do wish it would support Logitech's own PowerPlay charging mouse pad as then I would never need to worry about the battery.
Overall, the MX Master 3 retains the title of best productivity mouse award for the third straight year. It is an outstanding design and should be at the top of your list.

Nice Functionality
on October 24, 2019
Posted by: Balthazar2k4

Logitech's new MX Keys Advanced Wireless Illuminated Keyboard is a compact Swiss Army knife of a keyboard. It's lightweight, well-built, and multi-functional. I am using it with both my MacBook Pro and desktop PC with ease. Simply hit the button to switch device pairing and you are instantly off to the races with that device. It's almost better than a KVM switch. When paired with the MX Master 3 Mouse it is a powerful combo for multiple device situations. I also paired it to my iPad Pro and was able to quickly change between all three devices with ease. I do wish you could sync the devices so that if I switch paring of one it changes pairing for both the mouse and keyboard. Otherwise, it is still great functionality.
I'm still trying to get used to the keys themselves. A little soft and squishy for my taste. Reminds me of a notebook keyboard, but not a very good one. My Dell XPS 13 and Razer Blade Advanced have far better feeling key travel. Just keep in mind it may not be your taste especially if coming from something with real tactile response like a mechanical keyboard.
Response time on the keyboard is great and I didn't detect any appreciable lag when gaming with the keyboard so that was a plus. Lighting is also bright and even, but definitely has an impact on battery life. I would say that unless you really need it to turn it off though or you will find yourself charging the keyboard far more than you might care to. Battery life is good and I was able to easily get a week out of it with pretty heavy use.
Overall, the keyboard works great in my situation and is a solid entry into the Logitech MX series. Looking forward to the next iteration from Logitech.

Shockingly Good
on October 7, 2019
Posted by: Balthazar2k4
from Fort Collins, CO
I have owned many projectors in the past with my most recent being a Sony VPL-VW600ES from 2014. That projector was $15K and while it used a true 4K panel it did not offer any HDR support. I jumped a year too early. Once HDR became a thing I didn't use projection and have been using TVs ever since. When the opportunity arose to give the Epson Home Cinema 3800 a shot I figured "Why not?". Let me just say that my expectations were pretty low going in as I couldn't see how a non-native 4K panel at this price point would come even close to the Sony I had been using from five years ago. Well, let's just say I couldn't have been more wrong. The Epson HC 3800 exceeded all expectations and was a true eye-opener as to how far projectors have come over the last few years.
Let's start by getting one thing out of the way. The Epson does not use a true 4K panel, but a 3LCD setup with what they call PixelShift to approximate 4K. Epson isn't the first to deploy this kind of technology as JVC has done it for years in their higher end projectors before making the final jump to true 4K. I'll admit I had never seen it in person before and went in with the bias that it was 'fake' 4K and couldn't possibly be as good as the real thing. After all, I needed to justify the crazy money spent on my Sony for true 4K. Turns out I was wrong. Now I am sure with a truly high end screen one could see the difference, but the Epson HC 3800 convinced me I was watching true 4K with 4K material playback. The detail was there with minimal aliasing that can sometimes be seen when using lower resolutions to mimic higher resolutions. I will also say the lens setup that Epson is using is all glass and quite good, but does create a tad bit of softness no matter how hard you try to dial in the focus. I did not use any keystone correction which can digitally alter the output. The lens controls are fully manual and include both horizontal and vertical shift, focus, and zoom. The manual controls are solid and allow for fine adjustment with ease.
Motion processing is another key area of importance and especially so given the 1080p 3LCD design. The two HDMI 2.0 inputs supports both HDR10 and HLG, but sadly no Dolby Vision support. Material in both SDR and HDR10 at either 24fps or 60fps plays back stutter free with minimal judder on pans. Latency is also good enough that I was able to play Halo 5 from my Xbox One X with no perceptible lag. Motion in general is smooth with no noticeable ghosting effect which is great considering the LCD origins of the projector. I have also read online that the projector does not offer true wide color output (BT.2020 or DCI-P3) and is mapping color to the tried and true BT.709 standard. I cannot confirm this. I know that the 3800 accepts 10-bit color information and processes at 12-bits, but I have no confirmation of the actual output. I can say that the color looks very good and I did not notice any banding effects so either it is 8-bit dithered or a true 10-bit output. For anyone looking at a projector at this price I am guessing that won't be a deal breaker either way.
I projected against a 0.95 High Contrast screen at 106" and all I can say is that out of the box the Epson offered remarkable color and contrast especially at this price point. Black levels were reasonable, but to be fair not nearly as good as my Sony. That said, the light output on the 3800 is pretty remarkable and definitely makes HDR a reality. Highlights pop and provide a really pleasing experience. I measured 56L of output when the lens was set to wide angle at approximately 11'. More than enough output for even ambient light in the room and still provide an enjoyable picture. Keep in mind the screen will have an effect on the ambient light control.
The unit is a tad noisy when set to Bright Cinema mode which is maximum output. When set to standard Cinema setting the projector is whisper quiet which means mounting it close by shouldn't be a nuisance. HDR works great in Cinema mode so one shouldn't feel compelled to switch it to bright mode for that.
The remote control is solid and offers complete control of the projector minus the manual items. It is backlit as well which is a nice touch at this price. The projector is also armed with speakers which makes setting it up quick and easy for those who just want to use it for sporting events or parties where you don't want to fully integrate it into a home theater. They sound decent enough and worked great for the football I watched with it.
I should also note that this projector does support active 3D. It does not come with any glasses and I was unable to test the quality of the output. A nice plus though for those that are sticking with the format as TVs have basically abandoned it.
To put is all very simply, the Epson Home Cinema 3800 is a spectacular value and I have no problem recommending it to anyone not looking to spend big money on their home theater. It has definitely reignited the home theater bug in me and I am already trying to decide what I want to do with my basement. Great job Epson on creating a great value proposition and I look forward to seeing what's to come.

Great Follow-Up to the MR8300
on October 4, 2019
Posted by: Balthazar2k4
from Fort Collins, CO
The new Linksys MR9000 is basically the successor to the MR8300 released earlier this year. It offers the same features, but adds improved range and throughput. The MR8300 is certainly no slouch and has been one of the most reliable routers I have used. Granted I have only been testing the MR9000 for a week, but thus far seems to be following in its siblings footsteps.
To put things in context I live in a 4,000 sq. ft. two story home. The MR9000 offers coverage across both floors and I have not found any dead-spots to speak of. Wireless performance on 802.11AC is solid and on the main floor within 20 ft. of the router I see speeds exceeding 600mbps to my laptop. It very well could go faster, but I think I am hamstrung by the wireless performance of my laptop. At the extreme other end down in my basement on the opposite side of the house I can still get a very respectable 240mbps. Overall, I haven't seen better AC performance. I have on average 32 devices on my network and have not experienced any dropped connections to this point. I can stream 4K video to my living room, YouTube to multiple iPads, and my oldest son can be doing competitive online gaming in the basement simultaneously with ease.
I would be remiss to not include that like the MR8300, the MR9000 also offers Linksys' mesh networking technology. This means you can add 'nodes' throughout the home to help boost wireless connectivity for trouble-spots one might have. The difference in using mesh technology as opposed to the the range extenders of before is that they offer a dedicated backhaul channel that does not tie up the main wireless spectrum. In other words, wireless throughput is maintained.
The MR9000 also has four gigabit ethernet ports as well. I would have liked to seen more, but I'm a special use case in the number of wired devices I used in my home too.
The MR9000 offers ease of setup through the Linksys app and took less than 5 minutes to be up and running. The app offers a full complement of controls and can also be accessed outside the home if one wishes. While the MR9000 isn't for tweakers it does have a a complete set of controls for anyone looking to setup a reliable home network. Parental controls are a highlight and offer specific device scheduling to keep kids from sitting on their computers all day.
Build quality is excellent and the unit is relatively compact compared to some of the AX monsters on the market today. The biggest thing for me is the Wi-Fi reliability. I travel a fair bit so when I'm gone I don't want my family complaining that they can't get online because of dropouts or other hangups. So far the MR9000 hasn't let me down.
I am hopeful that next year's iteration will adopt 802.11AX. Yes, I only have one device with AX capability, but the standard is coming and more devices will support it with time. Regardless, nice job again Linksys. The MR9000 is another solid entry into the wireless networking game.

Still Great!

from Fort Collins, CO
I own a Dyson V8, V11, and now the V10. The V8 was my first exposure to Dyson's cordless stick vacuums and I immediately fell in love. The V10 is an evolution of that design and fixes many of the issues I had with the V8. It has a larger waste canister, better filter design, more power, and improved battery life.. The V10 has excellent suction power and with the power head attachment does a remarkable job cleaning both hard and carpeted floors. We have a dog and four cats and it picks up pet hair great too. On Max setting I am able to vacuum the main floor of my house with ease (approximately 2400 sq ft.) and still have plenty of juice left to hit stairs and other areas before dropping it back on the charger. It is relatively light weight so fatigue hasn't been an issue when using it for extended periods (greater than 30 minutes). Overall, Dyson simply makes the best cordless vacuums out there. Period.
So if it is that great then why only 4 stars? It now lives an era of the recently introduced V11. Given the $50 price difference between the two it is harder to just straight recommend the V10 any longer. The V11 offers even more power and auto power control based on the type of flooring. The V10 is wonderful and if you find it on a great sale I would have no qualms buying it; otherwise, I would give the V11 a hard look first.

Microsoft Surface Pro 2 Tablet: More capable than your average tablet but lighter and smaller than a laptop, the Surface Pro 2 features hands-on productivity with the ability to fully support Microsoft Office (sold separately). Multitask with side-by-side apps, prop up your tablet with the built-in kickstand, or connect accessories via the USB and display ports for a work-efficient desktop setup.

Serve nutritious and easy home-cooked meals at a fraction of the time that conventional cooking requires. Enjoy all the same benefits you love about Express Crock—one-touch settings for quick pressure-cooked meals—now with a Crisping Lid that adds a delectable crisp to chicken, ribs, and more!

Does it have a removable liner for washing?

Yes, the internal cooking pot is removable for easy cleaning. It is also dishwasher safe, but the manufacturer recommends hand washing to preserve the non-stick coating.

is the jbl free earbuds waterproof?

No. They are sweatproof which is barely on the cusp of water-resistant. In other words, if you are working out they will be fine, but don't expect to use them in a downpour outside.

Are these noise cancelling for gyms that play really loud music?

They do not offer active noise cancellation. They do however provide pretty decent passive noise cancellation if you can get them snug in your ears.

Which adapter would work for this monitor if I wanted to mount it to a standard Vesa stand

Pretty much any non-VESA to VESA mounting kit will work that is designed for a display this size.

is this a matt or gloss finish?

Glossy with an anti-glare finish. Does a reasonable job with reflections, but is no match for a matte screen.

How much are the Satlelites and are/when they available? My home is 4200 square feet. W/2000 square feet of finished basementnd I need all 3 floors covered. I know 2 cant cover 6200sqft. But one on each floor might. Also can each work being cat6 wired in

Three units (including the router itself) should have you covered assuming you can place them roughly center on each floor. Unfortunately, the satellites cannot be wired in at this time, but I do believe Netgear is looking at the situation. I am using the router and a single satellite in a ~4000sq ft home with a finished basement and it works great even with the satellite being connected wirelessly. Keep in mind the Orbi system uses a dedicated 5ghz channel as a backhaul so it does not work like a conventional router/extender combo.
