Ice Ice Baby
on June 28, 2021
Posted by: Kelby
from Wichita, KS
----- Summary -----
Verdict:
Not all ice is created equal. I call nugget ice “Sonic ice” or “the good ice”, and having it at home is awesome. If you are looking to elevate your drinks with nugget ice or you are a chewable ice fanatic, the Opal 2.0 is for you.

Pros:
- Modern, high-quality design
- Makes nugget ice quickly
- Quiet operation
- Wi-Fi connectivity

Cons:
- No app push notifications

----- Details -----
Design:
With its elegant design, the Opal 2.0 looks great wherever you put it. For now, I have mine on top of my mini-fridge in the basement, but I will eventually be building a bar, and this ice maker will be the perfect addition. It is by far the most stylish ice maker I have seen. At the top, you will find the touchscreen controls: power, light (on, dim, off), and clean. You will also find the status indicators, which show if it is making ice, defrosting, cleaning, water needs to be added, and if Wi-Fi is connected (for app features - more on that later). Much of the Opal ice maker’s exterior is high-quality stainless steel and having the controls, status indicators, and ice bin all illuminated is a nice touch that completes the Opal’s modern design which is sure to please.

Setup:
Included in the box are an owner’s manual, quick start guide, drip tray, and a scoop. Before first use, there are cleaning instructions to follow but thankfully they are easy and do not take long at all. The only steps required are to rinse the ice bin, water reservoir, and internal components. The bin should be washed with warm soapy water and the water reservoir should just be wiped with a damp sponge or cloth. Rinsing the internal components is a more extensive process that involves circulating five cups of water and one teaspoon of bleach through the machine using the ‘Clean’ button, then draining it and repeating the process three times with fresh water. Once complete, I filled the water reservoir with fresh water again, touched the power button, and the first ice-making process began. I appreciated that all the steps were outlined in detail with diagrams in the quickstart guide. Pairing the ice maker with the SmartHQ app was easy as well. Since this was my first appliance compatible with the app, I created an account, then I added the Opal Nugget Ice Maker, followed the on-screen instructions, and held the power and light buttons on the ice maker until the Wi-Fi indicator started flashing. After that, the app prompted me for the ice maker’s password and the last four digits of its SSID (located on the back), then I selected my Wi-Fi network, entered its password, and within a minute the ice maker was connected.

Features & Performance:
It is hard to say what the top feature of the Opal 2.0 ice maker is because in my mind there are two: it produces ice quickly, and it makes delightfully chewable little nuggets. Within about 20 minutes, the first batch started filling the bin (which holds up to 3lbs), and after about three hours it was full. That is the Opal’s consistent performance, so it lives up to the advertised pound of ice per hour or 24 pounds per day. Even when hosting small gatherings, there is always plenty of ice. What I find interesting and innovative about the way the Opal functions is that instead of acting as a freezer that preservers ice until it is used, it recirculates melted ice into the water reservoir so that it can be made into fresh ice. This method effectively avoids clumping and ensures that freshly made ice is always provided. I was pleasantly surprised that it does this while making ice quickly and operating quietly. What also helps the ice always taste crisp and clean is the built-in filtration system and UV sanitizing light. Every batch of ice is as good as the first, and I am a big fan of the nugget ice shape. Whether I am just drinking water or soda, or if I am making cocktails, the difference between using traditional, hard ice cubes and crunchable nugget ice is night and day. The craveable little nuggets elevate every drink. Another feature of the Opal 2.0 that is worth mentioning is the Wi-Fi connectivity which enables useful features in the SmartHQ app like setting up an ice-making schedule, checking the status, and adjusting the lighting (on, dim, off). My only wish is that there were push notifications for status changes like when it goes from “Making Ice” to “Ice Bin Full”.

Level Up Your Lock
on June 25, 2021
Posted by: Kelby
from Wichita, KS
----- Summary -----
Verdict:
If you are looking for an easy-to-install smart lock that does not compromise the aesthetic of your home, the Level Lock – Touch Edition should be at the top of your list. It is not perfect, but the everyday convenience and reliable performance go a long way.

Pros:
- Easy installation and app setup
- Sleek design, like a traditional lock
- Reliable performance
- Touch, key card (NFC), and auto-locking/unlocking
- Yearlong battery life
- Supports Apple HomeKit

Cons:
- Accidental touch activations
- Smaller strike plate sold separately
- Does not support Google Home

----- Details -----
Design:
What I find most impressive about the Level Lock - Touch Edition is that it looks like a traditional lock. Hiding its smarts inside of the door is brilliant because that eliminates the need for a bulky device on the outside and makes the lock easy to install. The included battery, which is said to last about a year, cleverly resides in the deadbolt and is easy to access when the time comes to change it. I was happy to see that a matte black color was available because I will be changing my front door’s handle to a matching matte black. I like the color, and the finish seems scratch-resistant. The sleek and elegant exterior of the Level Lock disguises its high-tech and innovative interior. Thanks to Level, you do not have to sacrifice aesthetics to have a smart lock.

Installation & Setup:
Just a screwdriver was all I needed to install the Level Lock. No power tools or wires to deal with. The instructions were easy to follow, and I was done with every step (except the installation of the strike plate) in about 15 minutes. I was not initially able to install the strike plate because the one included in the box was significantly taller than my existing cutout in the doorframe, and the previous lock’s strike plate was not compatible. I might have been able to enlarge the cutout, but not without compromising the structural integrity of the wood, so I decided to order the shorter strike plate from Level’s website. I am disappointed that the shorter strike plate was not included with the lock because it added inconvenience and time to an otherwise quick and easy installation process. For such a premium, well-designed product, not including an inexpensive part that some customers need seems like a miss on Level’s part. As for the mobile app setup (available for iOS and Android), it was quick and easy like the installation. There is not much to the app, which I appreciate because that makes it simple and easy to navigate. Within a couple of minutes, the lock was paired, and I was able to customize the settings as well as share access with my wife.

Features & Performance:
As in the name, one key feature of the Level Lock - Touch Edition is its ability to be locked or unlocked just from touching it. This feature is activated when your phone is in range, so there is no fingerprint sensor involved. It works very well, maybe even too well because there have been a couple of occasions when I accidentally brushed against it with my arm or elbow on my way out which extended the deadbolt before I closed the door. I suppose I would rather have it be too responsive than not responsive enough, so overall the touch feature works well. An alternative to the touch to unlock feature is auto-unlock which automatically unlocks the Level Lock when you cross into your home boundary. For both the touch to unlock and auto-unlock features, geofencing is used to know when you leave the area and return. It operates that way for obvious reasons. You would not want touch to unlock or auto-unlock to work anytime your phone is within range (e.g., while you are sleeping) because that defeats the purpose of the lock. There is also an auto-lock feature that can be engaged anywhere between 30 seconds and an hour after unlocking. I find this to be especially useful when I come home with my hands full and cannot manually turn the lock on my way in (the touch feature only works from the outside). In these cases, it is nice that I do not have to drop off everything and go back to the door to lock it or try to remember later in the day because I know it will automatically lock after my set amount of time. A few other ways the Level Lock can be accessed is the two physical keys and two hotel-like access cards included in the box. My wife and I carry the access cards in our wallets as backups to the mobile app controls, but they are also easy to share with guests who often prefer the cards over keys. If you use Apple HomeKit like me, I think you will be happy to know that the Level Lock integrates with HomeKit and works well. Having HomeKit integration enables additional features like locking/unlocking with Siri and running automations. I do wish the Level Lock integrated with Google Home though because I have a few of those devices in my home. Unfortunately, Google Home is not supported at the time of this review. That and the occasional accidental touch activations of the lock aside, the convenient and reliable features of the Level Lock – Touch Edition make accessing and securing my home effortless, so I am very pleased.

Powerful 2-in-1 With Great Battery Life & Features
on June 5, 2021
Posted by: Kelby
from Wichita, KS
----- Summary -----
Verdict:
If you are looking for a portable 2-in-1 laptop with all-day battery life and great performance, the Galaxy Book Pro 360 might be for you. There is a lot to like about it, such as the thin and lightweight design, beautiful screen, long-lasting battery, great keyboard, and included S Pen. Due to the poor webcam quality and lack of built-in stylus storage, it is just shy of a five-star laptop. Despite that, I am very pleased. Especially for Galaxy device owners, the Galaxy Book Pro 360 is definitely one to consider.
Pros:
- Thin and lightweight, especially for a 15-inch laptop
- Beautiful AMOLED screen
- Premium build quality
- Long battery life
- Comfortable typing experience
- Seamless experience for Galaxy device owners
- S Pen included in the box
Cons:
- Webcam quality is subpar
- No built-in stylus storage
----- Details -----

Design:
Laptops have been getting thinner over time, but what Samsung has accomplished with the Galaxy Book Pro 360 seems impossible. How is such a powerful laptop with a very long-lasting battery this thin? It is astounding to me, and so is the weight. Especially for a 15-inch laptop, the super sleek design is a game-changer for me, since I am often transporting my laptop on the go. With the Galaxy Book Pro 360, I can have a large screen without sacrificing portability. Even with such a thin and lightweight design, all the components feel solid and of high quality. To test the 360-degree hinge, I have been frequently trying different modes (laptop, tent, and tablet) and have noticed that the hinge is very sturdy. As for the ports, there is a decent selection that includes three USB-C (one supports Thunderbolt 4), a headphone jack, and a MicroSD card slot. If you use any USB-A accessories, you will need an adapter to use them with this laptop. Typing on the keyboard feels very comfortable. I like that the right side of the keyboard has a number pad which can also be used as an extra arrow d-pad that includes Page Up and Page Down, as well as Home and End keys. These are enabled when Num Lock is off. Rounding out my comments on the design, the trackpad is huge. I really appreciate that there is plenty of room for scrolling or using pinch zoom.

Screen:
The AMOLED screen is stunning. Whether I am inside or outside (even in direct sunlight), it is bright enough for me to see what is on the screen, and the colors are vivid. There are several color profiles available in the settings that allow you to customize the screen mode to your liking, or you can just go with “Auto mode” which will switch color profiles automatically based on what you are doing. Although not visible to the naked eye, Samsung says the screen reduces blue light which can lessen eye strain. I have had several long working sessions on this laptop and have not noticed any eye strain, so I think there might be some truth behind it. This is the first 15-inch laptop I have owned in a while, and I quickly realized that the extra screen space is nice to have, especially since I often find myself with multiple windows open at once.
Performance:
I purposefully ran numerous apps and videos at once to gauge the Galaxy Book Pro 360’s performance, and it handled everything with ease. Nothing crashed or had any lag. I would likely never be running that much at once, but it is nice to know this laptop can handle just about anything you throw at it.
Battery Life:
One thing I look for in a laptop is a battery that can last through a normal workday (8+ hours of continuous use), and the Galaxy Book Pro 360 easily hits that mark and then some. I would say that I average about 10 hours of battery life when running multiple apps and using numerous tabs in my browser. If I just use it for casual browsing or entertainment, I can get even more.
Features:
An S Pen is included in the box, and I have been using it often to write notes. I am happy to say the writing experience is great, and of the little doodling I did, the drawing experience seems great too. Since taking notes digitally is part of my weekly routine, I am glad the S Pen makes it easy to write legibly with little error. My only wish is that there was a slot to house it on the laptop, but at least it can attach magnetically. Since I usually participate in multiple video calls throughout the week, having a webcam on my laptop is a must. Unfortunately, the webcam quality on the Galaxy Book Pro 360 is subpar at best. I was hopeful that the various filters might help, but they do not. It always seems to look a little blurry and grainy, and those on the other end of the video calls agree, which is not acceptable for a premium laptop. The poor webcam quality came as a surprise to me because everything else about this laptop has been impressive. Moving on to some of the other features that I do like, there is a fingerprint sensor in the power button that works with Windows Hello. It has proven to be a reliable, quick, and secure way to unlock the Galaxy Book Pro 360. There are also several Samsung apps pre-installed that enable a seamless experience if you own other Galaxy devices. For example, Quick Share allows you to instantly share files, and Samsung Notes syncs across all Galaxy devices. As a Galaxy Note phone owner, I appreciate having apps like these that make multitasking or transitioning from my phone to the computer (or vice versa) very easy.

Finally, a Gaming Chair Innovation
on May 15, 2021
Posted by: Kelby
from Wichita, KS
----- Summary -----
Verdict:
Although the design looks similar to other gaming chairs, the Razer Iskur is unique. Its innovative built-in lumbar support mechanism along with the adjustable 4D armrests, back angle and chair height provide a level of comfort that I have never experienced in a gaming chair. On top of that, the attention to detail and build quality are exceptional. It carries a high price tag, but the Iskur is unmatched.
Pros:
- Attention to detail
- Excellent build quality
- Highly adjustable
- Comfortable
Cons:
- Only ideal for people 5’6”-6’2”
- Fairly pricey
----- Details -----
Assembly:
Unboxing the Razer Iskur was a unique experience that made a good first impression. With its creative design and comical use-case dos and don’ts, it was clear that thought went into the packaging. There is even a message from the Razer CEO and a QR code that takes you straight to a video with instructions on how to assemble the chair. Right from the start, Razer heightened my excitement about this chair by going above and beyond. Assembly was quick and easy, thanks to the step-by-step instructions, organized parts, and included Allen wrench. Razer recommends two people for assembly, so my wife and I worked together, but I think it could be assembled solo as well. Because the chair is heavy, lifting it onto the base was a little tricky, so it was nice to have an extra set of hands.
Design & Quality:
Like other racing-style gaming chairs, the Razer Iskur has a large seat with curves around the base, shoulders, and head that provide support. The right side has adjustment levers for the back angle, lumbar support, and height, whereas the left has a lever to control whether the chair can tilt backwards or is locked in place. It is a very comfortable chair with padding that strikes a great balance between firm and soft. A nice addition is the detachable memory foam head cushion. I am 5’11” and it fits perfectly between my neck and the bottom of my head, but there are only a few inches of room for adjustment. If you are considering this chair, keep in mind that Razer recommends users be between 5’6” and 6’2”. I am very impressed by the build quality. Simply put, the Iskur is built like a tank. Every component is solid, and the multi-layered synthetic leather feels durable, so I have no worries about anything breaking or wearing down over time.
Features:
The standout feature of the Razer Iskur is its adjustable lumbar support. The mechanism is unlike anything I have seen on a chair. Like many gaming chairs on the market, my previous one had a pillow for lumbar support. For me, just a pillow is not enough for extended working or gaming sessions. In my previous chair, I often noticed that I would shift around trying to get comfortable and sometimes had lower back pain. That is a thing of the past with the Iskur. Since the lower backrest is an adjustable part of the chair itself, it can extend outward and upward to provide your preferred level of lumbar support. Unlike a pillow, it is sturdy and supportive. I am just a few days into my experience with this chair, and I already notice myself not shifting around as much to get comfortable and no lower back pain. Another notable feature is the 4D armrests that can be adjusted up and down, forwards and backwards, left and right, and rotated inwards or outwards. As previously mentioned, the chair also has levers to control back angle, height, and tilt. These, along with the 4D armrests, allow me to adjust the chair just how I like. When it comes to comfort, I have quickly realized that this level of adjustability makes a huge difference.

Smart Home Companion
on April 2, 2021
Posted by: Kelby
from Wichita, KS
---- Summary ----
Verdict:
The phrase “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” certainly applies to the Nest Hub. Not much has changed from its predecessor, and that’s a good thing, but the sleep tracking, better audio, and edgeless glass display are welcome additions. For Google Assistant fans such as myself, owning a Nest Hub is a no-brainer. If you’re new to smart displays, this one won’t disappoint.
Pros:
- Compact design
- Edgeless glass display
- Easy to set up and use
- Quick responses from Google Assitant
- Controls smart home devices
- Better audio than first-generation
- Tracks sleep without a camera or wearable
- Great digital photo frame
Cons:
- Quick Gestures don’t always work
- Audio quality isn’t great
---- Review ----

Setup:
Whether you’re new to the Nest Hub or adding another one to your home (like myself), the setup experience is simple and quick. After plugging it in, downloading and/or opening the Google Home app on your phone, and tapping the add button you’ll be presented with on-screen easy-to-follow instructions with animations. It makes the setup process a breeze, so I was done within a few minutes.

Design:
Not much has changed from the first-generation Nest Hub, and I think that’s a good thing. I like the modern, compact design with its fabric-covered base that is angled in a way that makes it seem as if the display is floating. It looks great on my nightstand and doesn’t take up much space. One notable change to the second-generation Nest Hub’s design is the new edgeless glass display. It looks better and is easier to clean than the framed display of its predecessor.

Audio:
Don’t expect to be blown away by the audio quality. Although it has 50% more bass than the first-generation Nest Hub (which is a noticeable improvement), the audio is still just okay. This isn’t a significant drawback in my opinion because the audio quality isn’t the focus of the Nest Hub. If audio quality is more important to you than a display, I recommend checking out the Nest Audio. That said, the Nest Hub produces clear audio that fills a small room, so I’d consider it adequate.
Sleep Sensing:
I was excited to try out the new Sleep Sensing feature. The idea of sleep tracking without a wearable device sounded outlandish to me, so I had my skepticism, but it seems to work very well. Using Soli radar technology, the Nest Hub can detect movement and breathing. For privacy reasons, I appreciate that there’s no camera involved. Disturbances like snoring and coughing or light and temperature changes in the room are also detected. With privacy in mind, the audio data is processed on the Nest Hub, not sent to Google’s servers. Additionally, the Sleep Sensing feature is completely optional, so you can always disable it. Checking my sleep summary has become part of my daily routine, and I have been surprised by how in-depth and accurate it is. There are many metrics like when you fell asleep and woke up, how long you snored, how many times you coughed, and even your respiratory rate. I’ve used wearable sleep tracking devices in the past, and I think the Nest Hub is just as good, if not better.
Other Features:
Having a Nest Hub adds convenience to my life at home and as an added bonus, it works well as a digital photo frame. I could go on and on about the many things it’s capable of, but I’ll just highlight some of my favorites. The Nest Hub connects to and lets me control all my smart home devices. Adjusting the thermostat, turning the lights on/off, or even starting my robot vacuum can all be done by simply asking Google. If family members are in a different room that has a Nest speaker, I use the broadcast feature so that I don’t have to yell in order to share a message with them. It’s also my source for weather, news, or quick answers. New to the second-generation Nest Hub is Quick Gestures, which allow you to pause/play music or video with a tap of the air in front of the display, or you can snooze an alarm with a wave of your hand. However, in my experience with this feature, it doesn’t always respond to my gestures on the first try, so hopefully, there will be an update to improve it. After experiencing the many features and hands-free help Nest provides, I don’t think I could ever go back to not having one in my home. This Nest Hub becomes the center of whatever room it’s in.

Breathe Easy Knowing Your Air is Pure
on January 12, 2021
Posted by: Kelby
from Wichita, KS
---- Summary ----
Verdict:
Blueair has delivered a highly advanced and beautifully designed air purifier with this 7770i model. The 674 square foot coverage, air filtration, and protection against viruses and bacteria help ensure that my home’s air is pure which gives me peace of mind and keeps my allergies in check. That and overall health are things I don’t think you can put a price on, so in my opinion, this is a great investment.
Pros:
- Elegant design
- Quick and simple setup
- Premium touch display
- 674 square foot coverage
- Quiet operation
- Detailed particle and gas reports
- Auto mode enables hands-off air purification
- Night mode keeps it quiet and turns off the LED bar
- Kills germs, viruses, bacteria, dust, pollen, dander, and mold
- Can be controlled remotely via mobile app
- Automatically tracks filter lifetime
Cons:
- Large size
---- Review ----

Setup:
With no assembly required, getting started with the Blueair 7770i air purifier is a quick and easy couple of steps. After removing it from the well-packaged box, a protective wrapping must be removed from the unit itself and the filter within it. All that’s left to do after that is plug it into a power supply and press the On/Off button. A few additional steps are required if you choose to set up the Wi-Fi connection, which allows the air purifier to connect to the Blueair app. Since it’s optional, there’s a Wi-Fi button on top of the air purifier that can be pressed to disable the Wi-Fi function. I chose to set mine up with the Blueair app, and I’m glad I did because it provides features like indoor and outdoor air quality monitoring, filter lifetime tracking, scheduling, and the ability to adjust fan speed, or turn on “Auto” or “Night” mode. More on those features later. Overall, I appreciated the simple setup process that allowed me to get this air purifier up and running in no time.

Design:
The Blueair 7770i air purifier is large, but given its ability to completely filter approximately 674 square feet five times an hour, I’m understanding of its size. Plus, it’s elegant and by far the best-designed air purifier I’ve ever seen. One of the standout design aspects is the display on top which provides detailed reports of particle concentrations, volatile organic compound (VOC) levels, temperature, humidity, and filter life. Touch controls for On/Off, “Auto” mode, airflow speed, GermShield, and Wi-Fi are located below where the reports are displayed. Additionally, there’s an air quality LED indicator bar nearby that makes it easy to tell what the current air quality level is from afar. Colors vary from red for very polluted to blue for excellent. I like that everything you need to control or monitor the air purifier is easily accessible or viewable on top. Although it’s a simple design that’s generally understandable without referencing the user manual, I highly recommend reading through it to get a good understanding of what the air quality information means as well as how to care for and maintain the air purifier. Some small but appreciated design aspects are easy filter removal, wheels that enable you to roll it from one location to another (it’s quite heavy to pick up), and a cord winder to store any excess cord length. It seems like Blueair thought of everything when designing this air purifier.

Features & Performance:
I’m surprised by how quiet this air purifier is, even on its highest setting. I hardly notice it’s on, which is impressive considering it can completely filter a 674 square foot room about five times an hour, kill 99% of germs caught on the filter, and remove 99.97% of airborne particles like viruses and bacteria, dust, pollen, dander, and mold (based on third-party testing). I honestly believe it’s helped keep my allergies in check, which was one of my main hopes. I’ve tried this air purifier in a couple of different locations in my home, and when it’s near the kitchen, cooking is something that inevitably decreases the air quality. Often, in this scenario, the air quality indicator bar turns red to signify that the air is very polluted. One side of the bar is for particulate matter and the other for gases, so you could potentially see two different colors at once. I notice that when I’m cooking, the air purifier recognizers that the air quality is bad right away and gets to work. Within about 10 minutes, the air is already purified and those red lights on the indicator bar return to blue to indicate the air quality is back to excellent. Other colors that may show along the way are orange for slightly polluted, yellow for moderate, and green for good. The indicator lights can be turned off if you change the mode to “Night” which will also make the air purifier run as quietly as possible. This is great if it will be in the same room someone is sleeping in because the indicator bar is quite bright on its default setting. Speaking of “Night” mode, I like that it can be scheduled in the Blueair app. The same goes for “Auto” mode, or you can manually specify a certain fan speed if you’d rather not use either of those modes. Even the brightness percentage of the indicator lights can be scheduled, or just manually set in the product settings of the app. Other app features that are nice to have are outdoor and indoor air quality monitoring so that you can see the air quality outside and inside your home at a glance, and a filter lifetime status, which can is also be viewed on the air purifier itself. The Blueair 7770i air purifier is very advanced, but I’m impressed by how simple it is to use. I just have it on “Auto” mode most of the time and feel good knowing that every time I step foot in my home, I’m breathing pure air.

A Thrilling and Captivating Experience
on January 1, 2021
Posted by: Kelby
from Wichita, KS
---- Summary ----
Verdict:
Samsung’s HW-Q950T soundbar delivers exceptional power while maintaining a compact form. Its ability to provide incredibly captivating sound is remarkable, especially when playing Dolby Atmos and DTS:X content. At its price, the big question is, is it worth it? My answer is yes. Its easy setup, elegant design, thrilling sound performance, and features have exceeded my expectations. Putting it to the test was such a joy.

Pros:
- Sleek and elegant design
- Excellent build quality
- Dolby Atmos & DTS:X support
- Incredibly powerful and immersive sound
- Amazon Alexa built-in
Cons:
- Display isn’t visible when seated
---- Review ----

Setup:
Setting up the HW-Q950T was simple. Although the setup process for a soundbar is intuitive since it requires plugging in each component, I made sure to follow the instructions and I’d advise you do the same. This is because the order in which you plug each component into an outlet matters. First, you need to plug in the subwoofer, then the surround speakers, and finally the soundbar. Additionally, it matters which side of the room you place the surround speakers on. They’re labeled left and right on the back, which can be easy to overlook. After following the few easy steps as instructed in the manual, all components of the system (soundbar, subwoofer, and surround speakers) were automatically linked. No pairing process was required, aside from pairing my phone for Bluetooth playback. If for some reason all components don’t link automatically, the instruction manual tells you how to do it manually. The only hiccup I had during the setup process wasn’t related to the HW-Q950T but rather my TV. I correctly connected the soundbar to my TV via HDMI ARC (Audio Return Channel) and was not hearing any sound, then found out that my TV had HDMI ARC disabled. I thought this was worth mentioning in case you experience the same thing and have to enable HDMI ARC on your TV. The other connections available include two HDMI inputs and an optical digital input (which you’ll need to use if your TV doesn’t support ARC). I always appreciate a straightforward and pain-free setup process and based on my experience setting up the HW-Q950T, Samsung provided that.

Design:
The HW-Q950T is a hefty system due to the whopping 20 speakers packed into it and true 9.1.4-channel sound, which translates to 9 channels, 1 subwoofer channel, and 4 up-firing channels. The soundbar alone weighs over 15 pounds, but it’s heavier than it looks. At just 2.7 inches high, the soundbar is sleek, so it shouldn’t block your TV, but you might want to measure just to make sure. I have the soundbar sitting on the ledge of my fireplace mantle, but it can be mounted to the wall with the included brackets. It’s almost entirely covered in a very nice Kvadrat fabric that evokes elegance, and the front edges where the side-firing speakers reside are angled with a grille pattern which adds to the aesthetic. The subwoofer and surround speakers also have angled edges and Kvadrat fabric components that match the soundbar. I do wonder if this fabric will be prone to dust/fuzz collection over time, but it’s too early for me to tell. Aesthetically, I’m a fan of the HW-Q950T and wouldn’t change a thing, but I question the choice to put the display on top of the soundbar. If you’re seated, there’s no way to see the display that provides helpful information like input source or audio format. The front of the soundbar has lights to indicate power and volume, so I just wish the other display functions were on the front as well. There are physical buttons on top of the soundbar that control input, power, volume, manual Alexa summoning, and mic on/off if you’d prefer to turn off Alexa voice assistant. The included remote can do everything the controls on the soundbar can do, except disabling the mic, but there are additional controls on the remote like Bluetooth pairing, play/pause, sound settings, mute, and subwoofer level. The SmartThings mobile app can also be used to adjust the volume, sound mode, bass/treble, and subwoofer level. Overall, I like that the HW-Q950T is reassuringly heavy due to the power that’s packed into its slender design, and the Kvadrat fabric is a nice touch. It’s an excellent design that can complement any room it’s in. The one con I found with the design is the unhelpful display placement. Though it’s just a minor inconvenience, for a soundbar at this high price point, I’m being highly critical in my review.

Sound:
Despite my very high expectations for this premium soundbar, it still managed to surpass them. The sound produced by HW-Q950T is stunning, especially when playing Dolby Atmos or DTS:X content. Dialogue is clear, intricate sounds like the pitter-patter of raindrops or other background noise are audible when they otherwise wouldn’t be, and bass-heavy sounds like explosions in an action movie rumble my house. I’m blown away by the sound immersion. The HW-Q950T has this amazing ability to blur perception and reality. It’s a movie theater-like experience in the comfort of your home. The volume level can get extremely high (beyond what I can bear) without distortion too. Whether I’m watching TV, a movie, playing a video game, or listening to music, the variety of sounds work harmoniously to deliver a thrilling experience that has brought a smile to my face on multiple occasions. The HW-Q950T has given new life to shows, movies, games, or music I’ve played in the past because I’ve never heard them like this before. The sound produced by this soundbar is simply spectacular.

Features:
The HW-Q950T has a host of features like Samsung’s “Q-Symphony”, Tap Sound, Adaptive Sound, Game Pro Mode, Amazon Alexa built-in, Wi-Fi support that enables music streaming, Bluetooth, and last but certainly not least, Dolby Atmos and DTS:X support. If the content you’re playing supports it, Dolby Atmos and DTS:X technologies can provide lifelike 3D sound. Since I already raved about how great the sound is, I’ll leave it at that. What I couldn’t test is Q-Symphony, which synchronizes the speakers of a Samsung QLED TV (which I don’t own) with the soundbar for an even more immersive experience. Tap Sound is a feature that seamlessly transfers music playback from a Samsung device (with Android 8.1 or later) to the soundbar. After enabling this feature in the SmartThings app, all you have to do to switch music playback from your phone to the soundbar is tap the two together. Easy as that. Adaptive Sound and Game Pro Mode are each designed to optimize the sound of content. As in the name, Game Pro Mode aims to boost your gaming experience by providing greater immersion, whereas Adaptive Sound automatically refines sound based on the content, which I’ve noticed can be especially helpful with boosting vocal clarity. The increased vocal clarity with Adaptive Sound on is a noticeable difference but in Game Pro Mode, I struggled to notice any significant differences. Regardless, even on the standard sound mode, games sound much better than I’ve ever heard before. After completing Wi-Fi and Amazon Alexa setup in the SmartThings app, Alexa can be summoned with your voice. Along with the normal functions you’d expect out of Alexa, the soundbar’s volume can be controlled with your voice too. The SmartThings app and Alexa enable music streaming from services like Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, and more. I use Spotify, and it worked great. Audio can be played from a Bluetooth connected device as well.

Best In Class Performance & Lightweight Design
on December 17, 2020
Posted by: Kelby
from Wichita, KS
---- Summary ----
Verdict:
Logitech proves that excellent performance and battery life can be housed in a sleek, lightweight design. If you’re looking for a premium gaming mouse with these aspects plus unwavering wireless connectivity and consistency, consider the Logitech G Pro X Superlight.

Pros:
- Very lightweight
- Sturdy build quality
- Comfortable to hold
- Long battery life
- Responsive and precise
- Reliable wireless connectivity
- Smooth glide
- Simple setup
Cons:
- Not a truly ambidextrous design
---- Review ----

Setup:
Setup is as easy as one-two-three. Really, there are just three steps in the manual, which are to plug the charging cable, power on the mouse, and install Logitech G Hub on your computer. I appreciated the very quick and issue-free setup.

Design:
When I took the G Pro X Superlight out of the box, I couldn’t believe how lightweight it was. I immediately thought there must be batteries I needed to put in, but realized the rechargeable battery is already built-in. The word “superlight” in the name is no joke. Compared to the standard G Pro mouse, what you’re giving up for this astoundingly lightweight design is RGB lighting and buttons on the right side of the mouse. Although the shape is ambidextrous, the lack of buttons on the right side might make this mouse less attractive to those who are left-handed. Although I like RGB lighting, I think the substantial weight reduction is a worthy tradeoff for RGB, but that’s up to you to decide. Despite its lightweight, the structural integrity of the mouse isn’t compromised. There’s no flexing in the plastic outer shell, no rattling, and it feels sturdy, so I don’t doubt that it’ll withstand extended use. The Superlight has a sleek, no-frills design that still manages to look and feel like a premium mouse. Subtle touches like the white on the scroll wheel and the matte finish contribute to its tasteful look. Comfort is very important to me, and the Superlight delivers in that regard too. Its lightweight and large PTFE feet deliver a smooth and wrist fatigue-free experience, while the shape delivers comfort, even during long gaming or working sessions.

Features:
Settings are managed in the Logitech G Hub software (available for Windows or Mac OS). You can change DPI (the speed of your mouse on the screen), reassign buttons, and set up profiles for games/apps. It’s all pretty straightforward and convenient to have in one place. Included in the box are a few optional components like the rubberized skins for increased grip, a PTFE puck that can be swapped with the stock puck for increased PTFE feet surface area and less resistance, as well as a receiver extension adapter. These are in addition to the required components like the charging cable and wireless receiver. Though I currently don’t own the Logitech PowerPlay mat, it’s nice to know that can be used with the Superlight mouse.
Performance:
Whether I’m gaming or working, the responsiveness and precision of the G Pro X Superlight exceed my expectations, but where it shines is gaming. I’m a fan of first-person shooter games like Call of Duty, and the Superlight provides me with a precise aiming and shooting experience. Additionally, the wireless connection has been flawless. If I play badly, there’s no way I can blame it on this mouse. Battery life has exceeded my expectations as well. For such a lightweight mouse, I assumed that there’d be a small battery that wouldn’t last more than about 50 hours, but no, it provides an impressive 70 hours of battery life (in constant motion). Logitech proves that a lightweight design doesn’t have to compromise critical aspects like performance and battery life.

Great Features, Disappointing Design
on November 14, 2020
Posted by: Kelby
from Wichita, KS
---- Summary ----
Pros:
- Simple to install
- Universally compatible with different systems
- Really does help save energy/money
- Voice controllable with Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa
- Can know when you’re home/away and adjust accordingly
- Controllable from anywhere via mobile app
- Alerts for filter changes and dangerous temperature warnings
- Customizable temperature scheduling
Cons:
- Design seems outdated compared to others on market
- Lightweight plastic and loud clicking buttons make it feel cheap
- Mobile app is very basic, not elegantly designed
---- Review ----
Installation:
Included in the box are the thermostat, power wire (for installation without a C-wire), mounting screws, wall anchors, wire labels, wall plate, and mini screwdriver. This was my first time installing a thermostat, and I was pleasantly surprised by how easy the process was. After turning off the circuit breaker to my heating/cooling system, I removed the faceplate from my existing thermostat, labeled the wires with the cleverly included wire labels, and removed it from the wall. After that, I attached the LUX thermostat’s base to the wall and the wires to their matching terminals then snapped the thermostat to its base and proceeded with the setup process. My system has a C-wire, so I can’t speak to the installation process using the power wire, which looks a little more complex. Nonetheless, you don’t have to have a C-wire to install this LUX thermostat. The part that took me the longest was drilling holes and covering up the previous ones because I preferred not to use the included wall plate that’s quite large. Depending on the size difference between your existing thermostat and the LUX thermostat, and whether you prefer to use the wall plate or not, the time it takes to install will vary, but I like that there are just a few steps clearly defined in the installation manual. I didn’t experience any hiccups during installation.
Design:
I’m disappointed with the design and quality of this LUX smart thermostat. Put simply, it looks and feels cheap, which is not what I’d expect from a smart thermostat. The pictures look nice online, but it gives off a different vibe in person. Even something as simple as the buttons are offputting to me due to a loud click noise upon pressing them. Though it’s on the low end of the smart thermostat price range, there are similarly priced ones with better build quality and a modern look. This thermostat looks outdated and seems to be mostly made of lightweight plastic. Though a thermostat doesn’t need to durable or be a beautiful art piece on your wall, it just seems that there wasn’t much thought put into the design of this LUX thermostat, and that’s a shame because the features of it contend with alternatives on the market.
Features & Mobile App:
Where this LUX thermostat stacks up with the competition is features. I like the “geofencing” feature that switches the system to energy-saving mode when you’re not home and the ability to set temperature schedules in the mobile app. Both of these features help save energy and money. Additionally, I appreciate the ability to change the temperature from anywhere via the app, as well as the Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant support. These add convenience to changing the temperature. In my case, I use Google Assistant and it works great. Alerts are a feature I haven’t tested (and hopefully will never have to), but having alerts gives me peace of mind because they can warn you of dangerous freezing or heat conditions. Filter change reminders are a nice feature to have as well. When it comes to features, there’s really not much more I could ask for in a smart thermostat. However, like the thermostat’s design, the app could use some work. It was pretty easy to set up, and I haven’t experienced any glitches, but it’s very basic and not an elegant user interface. That aside, I think this LUX thermostat provides plenty of helpful features that add convenience to my life and help me save energy.
Verdict:
I really wanted to like this thermostat more than I do. It has all the features I look for in a smart thermostat, like scheduling, controlling from anywhere, Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa support, and home/away awareness. Additionally, I was relieved to find that the installation process was simple. What makes this thermostat difficult to recommend is the lackluster design. If it’s appealing to you, I’d say this is a good smart thermostat that’s worth your consideration. I understand that design preferences vary from person to person. I just think some of the other similarly priced smart thermostats on the market have the same features but much more premium, modern looks. With that in mind, I can only give this thermostat a three-star, “average” rating.

Work Hard, Play Hard
on October 29, 2020

from Wichita, KS
---- Summary ----
Pros:
- High resolution (1920 x 1080)
- Bright and vivid colors
- Quick refresh rate (75Hz)
- Equipped with AMD FreeSync technology
- Low response time (4 ms) reduces “ghosting”
- IPS technology provides a wide viewing angle and color consistency
- ComfortView reduces eye strain
- Two HDMI ports
- VESA mountable
- Modern design
- Thin bezel
Cons:
- Stand doesn’t allow height adjustment
---- Review ----
Design:
With a 27” screen size and thin bezel, this monitor provides a lot of screen real estate. I’ve found that this enables higher productivity when working and a more immersive gaming experience, compared to smaller monitors or solely using my laptop. It fits well on my desk and looks great, thanks to the modern design and textured pattern on the back. It’s VESA mountable but includes a stand that easily snaps into place without any tools required. Without the stand, the monitor is about 14” tall, and with the stand, it’s about 18” tall. Unfortunately, the stand doesn’t allow height adjustment, but it’s tiltable (-5 degrees/21 degrees). Along with the power cable, an HDMI cable is included in the box which is an addition I greatly appreciate. The connectivity options on the back of the monitor include a security lock slot, power connector, two HDMI ports, and an audio line-out port. Subtly located on the bottom right of the monitor are the power and on-screen menu buttons. I’m a fan of the design, which I’d describe as straightforward but also elegant.
Features & Performance:
This monitor not only delivers exceptional clarity with its full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution, but also an extremely smooth experience with its 4ms response time, 75Hz refresh rate, and AMD FreeSync technology. In my opinion, these are the standout features and reason enough to get this monitor. I connect my gaming laptop to this monitor via HDMI and really enjoy the gaming experience. The display is super responsive, so there’s no “ghosting” effect. Additionally, colors are bright and vivid. AMD FreeSync effectively eliminates stuttering and tearing that can occur when the display’s refresh rate and the content’s frame rate differ but be aware that you must have a compatible graphics card on your PC/laptop. I’ve thoroughly tested games like Fortnite and Call of Duty: Warzone and they both look flawless on this monitor. Working from home or regular everyday use is just as great. Additional features that further enhance this monitor are IPS technology and ComfortView. In-plane switching (IPS) technology provides wide viewing angles and consistent colors while ComfortView reduces blue light emissions. If you’re unfamiliar, blue light emission can lead to eye fatigue and strain. Compared to monitors that don’t have a feature like ComfortView, I do notice a significant difference in how my eyes feel during longer working or gaming sessions. It’s a feature I didn’t know existed, but now I don’t want to go without it. This monitor has all the features I could wish for complemented by impressive performance.
Verdict:
There are numerous monitors on the market at a wide range of prices. The refresh rate, resolution, and other features of this monitor might not measure up to the high-end options, but at this price point, I think it’s a fantastic bang for your buck. Simply put, gaming and working on this monitor is a great experience. For me, this beautifully designed, high-performance monitor easily earns five stars.
