Best home BPM machine I've encountered
on June 23, 2025
Posted by: ferrari
The family has been using the BPM Vision for a few days now, and having had a few of these devices over the years, the Withings has already proven to us that it is a superior unit to anything we've used in the past. The look, packaging, and performance is first rate, and the construction is solid.
Initial setup was as easy as could be. The unit arrived with about a half charge, using the provided USB-C cable it was brought up to full in about 20 minutes. Next was installation of the app, and again, the process was straightforward, simple, and trouble free.
Testing the device out, the feel and appearance of the cuff was akin to what you would encounter in the MD office, durable, professional and for all indication, built to last. But what was most impressive was the sound of the air pump - quiet as a mouse. Much appreciated, when any other machine I've tried sounds like I'm pumping up a tire in the house! Just one more indication of the quality built into the Vision.
I love the display pad - Messages are clear, crisp, nice font, and cleanly visible whether in bright light or a darkened room.
The app itself contains history functions for multiple users to easily track readings over time.
We recently purchased a finger pad EKG unit, curiously, the top of the Vision has two chromed finger presses, similar to what you would find on an arrhythmia device. Was wondering if these were there for a future upgrade, that would be a bonus to package the two devices into one product.
As the wife had been on blood pressure medication for some time, and I was recently advised during a medical visit to acquire a device & track my pressure over time, the Vision is a welcome addition to our home, and would recommend anyone currently in the market to take a look at the Withings.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Feature loaded TV at a reasonable price
on May 13, 2025
Posted by: ferrari
If you're unfamiliar with the name Hisense, you probably shouldn't be. Until recently, I wasn't; I was surprised to learn that they have the fourth largest market share of TV's in the world. They have also manufactured TV's under the market names of Sharp & Toshiba among others.
Within the past 3 years, I've upgraded all of the TV sets in the home, all of them 65 inch plus. I currently own a Vizio and a Samsung, so have had the opportunity to compare their features and operation of each. The most important thing I've discovered is what operating system the Smart TV uses. The Vizio uses Smartcast; the Samsung Tizen, and this Hisense is driven by Fire TV. It's like Beta vs. VHS; Windows vs Mac; or CD vs. cassette. The operating system has a great influence in how you operate, and ultimately, your enjoyment of the product. All of this is fungible, any manufacturer can use multiple operating systems within their product line. My point is that don't only look at manufacturer when purchasing; it's the operating system that will define your experience with the TV over its lifetime.
In my experience, I found the Smartcast to be the wonkiest - multiple freezeups; at times shutting itself off. With the Samsung Tizen, I found after switching between streaming services the system would start to lag; sometimes taking as long as 30 seconds to respond to input commands. Any operating system is subject to updates, but as of the moment I feel that Fire TV is top of the heap.
In my use of this Hisense, the system responded rapidly to given commands, and was the quickest in loading streaming services. The only issue I came across was if I clicked the volume up or down 3 or 4 times rapidly in succession, it would take a second to think, and then react to my commands. This could be a factor of the soundbar I have attached rather than the TV itself, so won't detract any points for the slow response. Then again, I could've just said "Alexa, raise volume", but the remote is my preference. I've had this TV running for a week, 24 hours a day, and it hasn't shown me any glitches yet.
The picture is outstanding, Nowadays you could drive yourself crazy trying to decipher each manufacturer's description of their display, in this case, the Hisense claims it's "Mini-LED With up to 1000 nits peak brightness", "Hi-View AI Engine", "Native 144Hz with AI Smooth Motion", and "QLED Color." I couldn't tell you what any of that means, you can read the item description to take it all in. All I can report is what I see, which is brilliant, and exponentially adjustable within the menus. While I normally keep my TV;s on a "vivid" setting, I found with this Hisense using the vivid in concert with the ambient light setting to work best, In my experience, I've always found ambient light sensors to be over- reactive, but I'm very happy with how well it works on this set.
I previously had a 65 inch tv in this location; however, when I mounted this unit on the wall bracket, I saw deflection in the bracket, so had to pause to get myself another wall mount. This is a heavy unit, weighing in at 64 lbs. I believe, so if you're wall mounting, make sure you're bracket can handle it. I picked up a mount that was rated for 125 lbs. just to be sure.
One other thing I'll mention is that if you're someone that wants their TV flush mounted, this unit is 3+ inches deep, so something to consider.
All in all, Hisense has impressed me with this model, especially given the price point they're selling it at.
I would recommend this to a friend!

The Latest & Greatest packed neatly in an 18" box
on May 9, 2025
Posted by: ferrari
Over time I've had a number of gaming laptops; most recently a previous model of this ROG, and an Alienware M5. To date, each of these have had some performance or design details that were either not included or resulted in poor performance. I've been a reader to the Asus forum many times, and when I had a problem or complaint, I could always count on others with the same concern. So, I'd have to say that in designing this model, Asus has read, studied, and addressed a number of issues that the ROG gamers had presented; the result being this ROG Strix G18.
I have to first comment on the presentation - it comes in a unique box that upon lifting the lid, the laptop itself rises up and presents itself to you. I'm surprised they didn't include a voice chip like you'd get in a greeting card that announces itself with a flourish of trumpets - TA-DA! Nice touch, but what else you got!?
The machine itself has a nicely sculpted lid with a crisp, clean design. Lid is a little heavy to open, but the dual hinges are solid and swing smoothly. The thin edge bezel also has a solid feel, I've had bezels that actually bend under the stress of opening, not so here. But far & away, the feature I most appreciate is the "no tool" back cover. There's a small slider on the underside, slide it open, push the lid up a notch, and the cover is off, revealing all the internals. No need to deal with a half dozen or more tiny screws, you can get your vacuum working in there in less than ten seconds. All the fans (3 of them) are exposed and easily cleaned. I used to dread doing this job on my Alienware, took the better part of an hour or more. This will surely be the cleanest laptop I've ever owned. Thanks, Asus.
Can't say I play a variety of games, but do have one I've committed thousands of hours to - the Civilization series - I've owned every one from the beginning, but since Civ 6, and now 7, you can reaglly ratchet up the performance sliders to place high demands on the processing & video power. I would set the framerate & other video specs to half peak values, and that machine would sound like it had emphysema with the fans pouring out heat into the room. This would be my performance test for the G18. I could finally turn the detail sliders up to their max, and enjoy gameplay as the creators intended. The color palette of the screen is gorgeous, I could zoom in to hotspots and enjoy the detail the game artists created.
There is one detail I'd like to nitpick with the Asus designers, as I see they are scanning the reviews here. The keyboard lighting. If you're working in the dark, it's pretty near impossible to see the special characters (when shift key is used) - only the numbers light; not the characters above them. Yes, it's a gaming pc, but I do work with it, emailing, etc., and since I'm not a professional typist, I have to use a flashlight to find my ampersands and hashtags.
One other reason that draws me to Asus is their online support forum - I've owned Asus products for over 20 years, I would think that the ROG gamer participation is probably one of the beat in the industry. That, and the included Armoury Crate software which offers a myriad of customization & performance settings to improve your experience. These guys are serious about gaming.

Finally - a heater/cooler that actually works
on April 16, 2025
Posted by: ferrari
I've had a few of these neck worn cooling devices over the years - and all of them have gone to the trash bin. The Torras is the first I've seen that offers heating as well as cooling. Unboxing the Coolify (I think they could've worked a little harder on the name!), the packaging is super premium - the box and carry case outweigh the item itself! The carry case is hard shell - most items of this type just come with a soft bag.
The unit came with a half charge, there is no wall adapter, it charges through a USB cable, which is provided. Took about an hour to bring it up to full charge, so I could begin checking it out. There are only two buttons on the device itself, an on/off and a mode change. Downloading the app provides a far greater degree of control. There are two color LCD screens, one on each arm of the device which gives you a visual of the current mode of operation.
Placing the device on my neck, it is somewhat heavy, but balanced very well. If you look at the photos, you can see the rubberized area which is what supplies the flex for fitting. I found it to fit snugly without giving a feeling of being throttled, which is what I've felt with some previous neckband devices.
I first tried the cooling mode, within a minute or two it provided a nice chill to my neck. It's most pronounced on the back plate itself, however, it also provides a breeze through the top vents. Fan speed is controllable through the app.
Switching over to heating mode, the unit responded rapidly, providing a gentle warmth through the backplate, and warm air coming through the top vents. As you would imagine, heat requires a lot of energy; I wore the unit for about an hour, and it still had charge left in it. Of course, a lot of this depends on the specific settings.
Unfortunately, we're in mild weather at the moment, I'm looking forward to putting the Coolify through its paces while gardening in the heat of summer. Alternately, I can envision myself slipping this on before going out to tackle some snow blowing.
Overall, the unit seems to be very well constructed, I'm expecting to get a lot of use out of it this summer.

Great upgrade to the Ring family
on March 30, 2025
Posted by: ferrari
I've had the Cam Plus installed for 5 days now, and doorbells along with a base station around the home, so have had the opportunity to compare it side to side with Ring's latest and greatest.
The quality of the camera is the best I've seen so far. While just about any cam can focus on objects half a dozen feet or so in front of it, the ring has excellent clarity and field of view both near and far. In particular I noticed how it reacts at motion. I also have dash cams in my vehicles; in both my home and my cars, when viewing a clip, when you freeze frame a shot you lose clarity. I'm including a shot below of an Amazon delivery driver tossing my package over my front gate. I was able to freeze the package in midair, and still be able to get a good image of the package. In another long shot of my front porch, the detail is clear both at the front and back of the porch. They really packed some performance in this camera.
Setup was 1-2-3 quick. Snap a photo of the QR or bar code on the back of the camera, and you're in the app and connected to the web. I currently have my router in mixed mode, I've had devices that barked at the, and only wanted to connect to a dedicated 2.4Ghz line, but had no problem with the Ring.
The app has a plethora of choices and settings as to how you want to interact with the device, and what you want to capture, be it all motion, a person, a pet; a package, and what your level of interaction is be it a text notification, image, or clip.
The cam plus is mountable in a variety of configurations, there are mounting posts both on the bottom and back sides. Combined with a swivel and hinge mount, it doesn't matter if the location you want it is vertical or horizontal. If I had to nitpick the mount, it's pretty difficult to unsnap the folding portion from the base, I was quite concerned it would snap off in my hands, but it held.
As I said, I currently have another security system installed, for the moment I'll be using the Ring as a mobile unit for multiple purposes. I've been placing it in a far corner of my yard that's out of my view, so I can see when the dogs are digging up my plants. I've also used it as a temporary baby cam when the grandkids are over. Given my experience so far, I could see myself migrating my total home security over to a Ring system. It works - well!

Simple solution to a common problem
on February 6, 2025
Posted by: ferrari
I don't know how many times I've come across an issue that this product solves. Dozens of times, both inside and outside the home. Electrical plugs that come straight out, are unbendable, forcing you to make cutouts. shave adapters with a razor, or other potentially unsafe solutions to accommodate a plug that doesn't fit. Either that, or you've used a cable that's just too thick to route around your devices, or worst, so thin that you know it's not going to survive even casual use. Such was the issue I had with several Iphone charging cables that came apart or just stopped working.
This Insignia cable seems just right to purpose. The problem I'm solving with it is simple - the charging cable for my laptop would come out the side of the unit, and since it didn't bend easily, it would reach out 3-4 inches before it would make the bend to go back behind my desk. The Insignia extends out half the amount the previous charging cable did, making for a much neater and simpler solution.
The cable itself is very supple and easy to route whichever direction you need to go with it. The braiding on it is tight, the appearance is somewhat more tech oriented than a simple smooth plastic. I also appreciate the 7 foot length, which gives a little more leeway in the event you need to route it under a desk to a wall outlet. There is a velcro strap attached to neatly wind up any excess cord.
Very happy with this Insignia product, the pricing compared to other major brands is excellent, I'll certainly be looking towards them for future cable purchases.

Clean air, heat, style, and silence
on December 4, 2024
Posted by: ferrari
As of the moment, I have a number of full size indoor air filters in the home, practically one for every room. My current inventory includes an Idylis, Samsung Bespoke, Dyson, a couple of smaller Honeywells, and now, the Blueair. That is in addition to using a Level 10 air filter for my central air unit. Needless to say, I appreciate clean air, so adding another high level machine like the Blueair ComfortPure makes for a welcome addition.
Setup for the unit was pretty straightforward & hassle free. The unit comes with the filters packed inside the machine, you need to open it up & remove the plastic wrapping. Download the Blueair app, which then searches for the unit via Bluetooth. You then log it into your wifi network.
The first thing I noticed is the filters are very similar in shape & appearance to the Dyson HP10, which was reassuring as the Dyson has been servicing me well for the past 2 years. Filters installed, I turned it on, checking the various speeds & functions including heating, cooling, rotation and night mode. The unit offers a Boosted Purification Mode which delivers the air through the upward air vents. After completing my check of the various modes and options, I set it to Auto mode with 180 degree oscillation which is where it's been for the past week.
The one thing I observed that impressed me was it was virtually silent, even with oscillation on. Of course, if it picks up bad air, smoke, or cooking odors, it will pick up in speed to clear the problem, then return to silent operation. There are colored indicator lights in the front panel that indicate the current air quality.
Note that despite the "cooling" mode; the unit has no air conditioning capability on its own. It simply provides movement of air. I will verify that the heating mode does work, enough so to provide a boost to a room that needs a little help. Please be advised that you should never plug this unit into a power strip, especially if you're using it in heat mode. The unit does provide a "tip over" kill function for safety.
I've included some screen shots below to show the various functions displayed in the app, including a time graph of how it's operated over the past day.
Overall, I'm very happy with the operation of the Blue air, matter of fact, so impressed that after watching it work for the past week, I bought one of their "Dust Magnet" products.

The gold standard of turntables - dressed up
on December 4, 2024
Posted by: ferrari
I'm a long time vinyl collector and certified audiophile. This will be my fourth iteration of the SL 1200 series turntables. Two I still own, in separate rooms; the other two have been handed down to friends. The oldest of these is now over 40 years old and still performs solidly with no repairs other than phone cartridge changes.
This is a solidly built table which over the years has earned the moniker "the DJ's table of choice;" and indeed, if you're at an event with a DJ, you're very likely to see them using an SL-1200. I always kind of resented this model being typecast in that fashion, since the SL series build quality and performance rivals that of many audiophile turntables, many of which are in a price range that doubles, trebles, or even more surpasses the cost of the 1200. If I were a novice in the vinyl market looking for a turntable, I might see the Technics identified as "for the DJ", and immediately move on to a product for home enthusiast use.
For example, I've previously owned a VPI aries turntable, highly regarded and also far more expensive than the SL. While it was an eye catcher which earned me many compliments; it also required far more attention to operate. Initial setup was difficult trying to mount, balance, and align the cartridge, being a belt drive there was slippage & wear, not to mention that it requires an expensive power supply to properly regulate the speed. The Technics simplifies much of this using a plugin headshell making it far easier to install a new cartridge, or for that matter, swap cartridges on the fly - not possible on many high end turntables. The onboard stroboscope ensures at a glance that you're operating at the correct speed. I could write a book explaining the many features and options of the SL (and there is much out there documenting this in minute detail.) Suffice it to say that if you want solid performance and want to spend more time listening to your music instead of adjusting your turntable, the Technics has all you want in spades.
As for the Lamborghini Edition, there is no difference in functionality between this and a standard SL-1200. It comes with a Lamborghini logo slipmat and a 33 vinyl record of "the sound of Lamborghini." Whether you want to spend more for the window dressing, that's up to you - it's not going to change the sound or performance of your turntable.
There is one major difference to this model, being that the dust cover is completely detached on the Lamborghini; all previous models I've seen use a flip up. The odd thing is that there are still slots on the dust cover itself to accept the hinges as if it were a flip up. I was searching the box for the hinges, till I noticed there are no slots to accept the hinges on the turntable plinth itself, so you couldn't make it flip if you wanted to. Seems to me they could've supplied a dust cover without the slots in the back, but this is a minor issue to be sure. However, if you do want a dust cover that flips up, be sure to go for one of their other models.
I'm very pleased with the performance of this new SL-1200, and given my prior experience, am sure it will be with me for a long time.

It's not just a monitor
on November 10, 2024
Posted by: ferrari
Whether working, browsing, or gaming, I continually find myself opening tab after tab, and running out of screen space to place them. That's why this LG appealed to me. Setup for the unit went quickly. The mounting flange of the stand cleanly snaps into the back of the screen, and the base of the unit has a captive screw to attach it. To power the unit there's a transformer brick, and unfortunately, the plug is built into it. I wish these things would be abolished, they either cover an entire wall outlet, or take up half of a power strip. Whether it's your TV/Sound system or computer workspace, you end up needing two or three power strips to accomodate all the plugins.
If you plan to use the WebOS services the LG provides, you'll need to download the LG app - this is all done via the setup screens, QR codes are provided to simplify the operation. A remote is provided with quick access buttons for Amazon, Netflix, & Disney+; whatever services you plan to use can be logged into. I thought the whole process was straightforward & intuitive as opposed to what I've experienced with other Smart TV's, tablets, etc.
Picture quality is excellent, and has a multitude of adjustments available; similar to your Smart TV there are tone adjustments for viewing movies, gaming, as well as blue light limitations. Speaker quality is good, it's not soundbar quality, but not tinny either.
I initially set this up outside of the workspace I intended it for, and that left me in a bit of a quandry. Not a bad one, mind you. The problem is, this monitor does too many things! I set it up while watching Sunday football on my big screen tv, and I said, gee, wouldn't this help me make a sports bar out of my media room? Especially given the state of streaming nowadays. You can't switch between watching programs without logging in & out of services. What I figured is I can watch network tv and Thursday Night Football on Amazon at the same time. So, for the rest of the football season at least, I think I'll be leaving this monitor where it is. That's what I told my wife, anyway!
This LG puts a lot of performance & capabilities at a more than reasonable price level, I would recommend it to those looking for more screen real estate, and have the bonus of using it as a supersize tablet/laptop/tv.

The latest thing I'll never be without
on October 31, 2024

To be honest, I was quite skeptical about receiving this product. I saw a big box, a big hose, and I'm thinking this is going to be clumsy, noisy, and work no better than a box fan. Boy, was I wrong. Before I even talk about it I'm going to say I'll never be living without one!
I was also concerned that I'd have a problem fitting it to my mattress as I have a King Pillow Top that's a foot thick. That concern was alleviated once I started taking the pieces out of the box. To set up, you take the box with the mechanicals; clear out the shoeboxes from under your bed, attach the air hose, and slide the unit under the bed frame. There's a plastic frame that holds the hose & the jet nozzle; there's a tab on it that slides under your mattress to hold the assembly in place. There are also extension pieces which would accommodate mattress sizes even thicker than a foot (as was mine.)
To be clear, the nozzle goes between the fitted sheet on your mattress and the top sheet.
Next, take the remote, establish a bluetooth connection to the main unit, hook into your wife, and you're ready to go.
While the Bedjet provides cooling, the box itself does not have any air conditioning ability. The air it provides in cooling mode will be the air temperature of the room; however, since it's drawing from the floor that should theoretically be the coolest in the room.
The remote is very well thought out. There are options for heat, cool, dry, or there are up to 3 presets you can program for either the heat or cool function, the airspeed, and how long you want the unit to run (auto shutoff.) I initially started the unit at 50% air speed, and that was able to lift both the top sheet and a fairly heavy comforter in a couple of seconds. Personally, I found a setting of 25% worked well for me, providing a noticeable stream of air as well as having a barely noticeable sound level. Kicking it up to 50% the sound becomes about the volume of a window fan or white noise machine. At 100%, well, that's a mini cyclone in your bed - this unit is powerful. But, as I said, I'm in a king size bed, and setting it at @ 25% was all I needed. That provides a sensation of air moving, but more importantly, it's lifting the sheet to it's not touching your leg. Slide your legs to the left or right, and you'll never run out of a "cool spot."
I'm talking about how much I enjoy the cooling function, if you speak to my wife, she'll be raving about the gentle heat it provides. Again, with the remote, you can set the level of heat you would like in 1 degree increments. And therein lies the rub - if you're like my wife & I, we have diametrically opposed conditions as to how we like to sleep - I like cool, she prefers warmth. I generally will sleep with the top sheet off while she is covered. Bedjet, however, thought of this & optionally available is a dual zone sheet which will provide both heat & cool to separate sides of the bed. (a second unit would be required to do this.) Or, if you're like me, with a another available bedroom, take the second unit and place it there - which is what I did. While I received this unit for promotional consideration, after sleeping with it for 3 days, I decided it was something I didn't want to be without, so I bought another one!
I did have some minor issues - the remote is beautifully designed, all the keys light up as soon as you touch it (i wish all tv remotes were like that), it's all in text, not some undecipherable symbols, and there's a battery indicator. The issue I had was that it sometimes disconnects, and I have to rescan to connect it back to the unit. The other thing was on initial setup, it does not provide a list from which to select your wifi's SSID, you have to do that manually.
So far, I've had a week's worth of great sleep with the Bedjet, good enough to know there'll be one under my bed for the foreseeable future.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Barista-quality performance with a new intuitive interface that provides all the information you need to create café quality coffee at home. The built-in grinder delivers the right amount of ground coffee on demand, for full flavor. With a 3 second heat up time and precise espresso extraction, you go from bean to cup, faster than ever before.

What is the difference with the PRO model

As I understand it, no pressure gauge - it's replaced by a countdown timer so you time your shot for 20-30 seconds. It has the Barista Pro grinder, with 30 settings as opposed to 18. But I would say the big one is - 3 second warmup time. That's better than instant coffee.

Does this work with an Orbi AC3000 wifi router? My ring does not work without some serious modifications that I do not want to apply.

If you look at my review, I have the indoor unit sitting on my kitchen counter along with my Orbi satellite. They coexist perfectly. I understand your concern, this past week I had fits trying to set up an Epson scanner that refused to cooperate with the Orbi. But no problem with the Eufy - and I also have their floodlight cam.

is that machine automatic?

It's what they call a super automatic. This one goes a notch further by brewing "one touch" latte. It grinds, brews, and foams milk at the touch of a button - well, actually two touches once you set it up.

Secure detailed proof of vehicular incidents with this Owlcam smart dual dash camera. The 1440p outside-facing and 720p inside-facing cameras capture high-definition video, and 4G LTE connectivity enables instant video alerts and remote access to live and recorded footage via smartphone. This Owlcam smart dual dash camera supports voice commands for hands-free operation.

What is in the box? And is it possible to connect the Owl dashcam to a power bank and not to the OBD?

No other connectors are included. I imagine you'd have to strip the connector and attach it to both ignition on/ ignition off leads if you wanted to do that.
