Inexpensive & Piece of Mind to Protect AirPods
on September 8, 2024

The Insignia Silicone case for the 1st and 2nd generation of AirPod Pros fits great. Even with the slick, white, Apple plastic, the silicone grips nicely and I have yet had the Insignia cover come off or loose from the Apple case.
A deal breaker for me would have been if the Insignia case prevented the AirPods from charging wirelessly. I am happy to report that even with the silicone case, the AirPods charge wirelessly, without issue, though it does take a wireless charger a couple seconds longer to register the AirPods.
There are only 2 minor drawbacks to the Insignia case. One is that the cover makes the status light on the front of the AirPods hard to see at times. The second is that I’m not sure of the longevity of the included key ring. It too is connected to the case with a just a bit of silicone, so I’m not sure of the long-term durability. But, I am happy to report with over a solid week of hard use, it shows no signs of failing yet.
The Insignia case is a solid value. Its fit is excellent and the price is reasonable.

2 x USB-C (40GB/s supports DP and PD)
INTRODUCTION
The Dell XPS CoPilot+ 9345 ushers in a new era of laptops for Dell. This is the first generation of laptops incorporating the Snapdragon X Elite processor with a built-in Neural Processing Unit for AI assistance and an ARM based operating system. Everything is going AI now. That is the buzzword of the year. The Snapdragon X Elite processor in this XPS is unique in that it can perform basic AI tasks “on chip” without the need of a constant internet connection to send and retrieve data from. This “on chip” approach also frees the main CPU from dedicating computing resources for AI related functions.
USE
This XPS CoPilot+ PC is fundamentally different than the status quo x86 / x64 operating environment we have known for the better part of 3 decades now (I say 3, as I consider Windows 95 the first real user-friendly OS on the x86/x64 environment). It can be confusing deciding between a “normal” computer and an ARM based product. A “normal” computer is what we have all been using for decades. An Intel or AMD chip with Windows x86 operating system. An app store, Windows Update, and easy to find drivers via the manufacturers’ websites or Windows Update.
ARM based computers are not like that. The easiest way to describe them are like cellphones on steroids. The ARM based operating system looks like normal Windows for the most part but has a bunch of stuff happening in the background to make Windows work. Some apps, like most Microsoft apps, work natively on the ARM OS. Other apps must work through an emulator to bridge the app to the ARM OS.
This should not be a major concern for the most part, as it is mostly transparent in the background with no user issues to speak of. But it can be an issue because some apps just don’t work quite right with the emulators. Honestly, it has been hit or miss. Some Windows apps perform flawlessly on the ARM OS, others don’t. I’ve averaging about a 75% success rate with apps. Most of my common apps work without issue, but there are some I’ve been forced to find alternatives for.
Same can be said for driver updates. ARM / Snapdragon based computers don’t get driver updates like you would get off a normal x86 computer. You can’t just go to a vendor’s website or Windows Update to do a driver search and expect to find the latest driver. Most don’t exist. Most are geared natively to Mac and/or Windows and trying to install one of those drivers will not work with these Snapdragon-based ARM computers.
Instead, the computer receives a driver update package. Almost identical to your Android phone when a carrier issues an update. This package is unique to the computer and is not something you can pick and choose from. Think of it like when your normal x86 computer gets a bios update. The process looks and feels nearly identical.
I find this good and bad. Being a techie, it is bad. A user can’t just go out to the interwebs and get an updated driver for something that doesn’t work. The user must wait for a system update to fix an issue. Sometimes this happens quickly, sometimes it doesn’t. When I first got this laptop, if would not connect to my TP-Link Deco router. I went several days hot-spotting off my phone for internet connectivity. Why? Because I couldn’t go out to the Wi-Fi card manufacturer and get an ARM based driver, they don’t exist. However, after two or three days, Dell released a system update to the laptop, and it cured the issues with the Wi-Fi. Had I had a “normal” computer, I could have fixed it in minutes.
DISPLAY
The XPS 9345 display is gorgeous. The 3k (2880 x 1800) display is crisp, colorful, and just awesome to look at. Color reproduction appears very accurate, and the blacks are so crisp and inky. The added pixel count of 3k resolution on a small 13” display makes the pixels nearly imperceptible. The small screen is packed with a bunch of detail. It looks amazing.
CPU
This is what sets the XPS CoPilot+ 9345 apart from its brethren. The Snapdragon X Elite is a 12-core processor with an ARM-based architecture. It is different than traditional Intel and AMD chips. Between 12 cores and the very efficient ARM architecture, the Snapdragon processor is fast. As fast or faster than the latest Intel i7 based laptops it competes against. In fact, I find the Snapdragon processor feels superior to its Intel and AMD based competitors in terms of responsiveness. Even with heavy multi-tasking the Snapdragon hasn’t felt overburdened like my x86 laptops tend to do. The whole ARM based environment feels more efficient under intense workloads.
BATTERY LIFE
This is one area that I absolute must touch on. The XPS 13 is the longest lasting laptop I have used to date. This is the one area where an ARM based laptops excel. The Snapdragon gives the user the power and performance of a high-end x86 based computer with the efficiency of a tablet.
This is the first computer I’ve ever used that gives me all the computing power I need of a full-sized laptop without any performance penalties for battery saving. It is really that amazing. The biggest power draw of most laptop is the display. Even at full resolution and 50% brightness, the laptop returns a good 9 – 10hrs of life, sometimes more. While I have other laptops or 2-in-1’s that can do this too, it is not without a significant performance penalty or viewing penalty. The XPS allows me to run the processor at optimum speed, the screen at excellent brightness levels and still returns all day battery life.
Again, this the FIRST laptop I’ve ever used that has returned these results. It is amazing.
NEGATIVES
Upgradability. I said this in another review, but 2024 is the beginning of the end of upgradeable laptops. This XPS is no exception. Aside from the SSD, the laptop is not upgradeable.
ARM. I see the ARM architecture as a like it or hate it affair. It is a decision left up to the end user. There are pros and cons to the OS. While it is very power efficient, it is also not (for the lack of a better word) user-friendly. By that, I mean for those of us that are not afraid to go in tweak drivers and make changes, this is not for the tinkerers. But, for those that don’t want to worry about that stuff and just want a turn it on and forget it experience, this is your machine.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Users buying a new laptop to experience the greatness that is AI will be disappointed. There just isn’t a ton of features available currently. My biggest use of AI to date has been in CoCreator in Paint. It has helped turn my ideas and renderings into something that looks legitimate and not like a 2nd grader did it.
The XPS CoPilot+ is an undeniably great option for those that need all day battery life. I easily got more than a full workday out of it, with power to spare. Most importantly, no matter how hard I have tried to cripple it, the laptop maintained its composure and most importantly, did so nearly silently.
I said it before in this review. I have never had a laptop that has provided me with this much performance for this amount of time without some type of penalty attached. The XPS has exceeded my expectations in nearly every important aspect of my testing. The battery life is OUTSTANDING. The screen is gorgeous. The performance from the new Snapdragon processor is VERY impressive.
While I’m not completely sold on the ARM architecture, it is growing on me. There still is some work to do. Some of my favorite apps don’t work on the XPS and when I do have issue like I had with my TP-Link router, I can’t just go in and fix it myself. I must wait until Dell fixes it. Unfortunately, that could take some time.
However, as of now, the pros are outweighing the cons. I’ll admit that I’m a die hard x86 person, but the ARM OS is growing on me, and I can see the appeal for most people. The processing power of the Snapdragon X and power efficiency of the ARM architecture is unmatched by any x86 computer.

Average Price / Average Sound / Average Build
on August 11, 2024

INTRODUCTION
The LP-70 is Audio Technica’s entry-level model. Featuring all plastic construction (aside from drive mechanisms) it is meant for folks getting their feet wet with spinning vinyl. While it does its job as intended, it is just like the title says: Average, at best, in every sense of the word.
USE
Assembly of the LP-70 was a no-brainer, even without using the included instructions. There was very little do aside from fitting the platter, affixing the belt to the drive pulley, and assembling the lid. Straight forward and easy. Should you need to reference the instructions, they are easy to follow and understand, which is something I can’t say about AT’s competition.
The new AT LP-70 does not follow AT’s design of its higher end siblings. The tone arm is unique to the LP-70. Buyer beware if you go to swap the headshell on the LP-70. One, I’m not sure AT’s excellent assortment of headshells are compatible, and two, even if they are, it would require rebalancing the tonearm after installation as the stock headshell is basic, at best.
Thankfully, AT does offer users the ability to swap out styli as they see fit, and AT offers a wide variety of styli for users to choose from. For an entry-level model, this is great that AT chose to use a standardized stylus system. One, everyone’s opinions are subjective, what one finds appealing, another won’t so it gives everyone an option to pick a stylus the like and two, let’s face it, the included blue stylus is mediocre, at best.
NEGATIVES
I don’t consider myself a vinyl snob. Honestly, for me, its much more of a novelty and hobby. But, there is something nostalgic and sentimental about a good, quality record. It captures something that today’s lossy audio rips can’t reproduce.
With that, compared to my current set-up that is only slightly more expensive than they LP-70, I see just how mediocre the LP-70 is. I know die hard AT fans are going to thumbs down my review, but my current model embarrasses the LP-70. I don’t know if it is the superior Ortofon stylus included with it, or the fact that it has a 5.5mV output, but it is far more dynamic, cleaner sounding, and punchier than albums played on the LP-70.
CONCLUSIONS
Therein lies the dilemma in rating the LP-70. On one hand the LP-70 is a reasonably priced turntable. Yes, the build is all plastic, but who cares? The LP-70 gets the job done and is easy to use. It has a switchable Line / Phono output to accommodate nearly anyone’s audio system and is a great example of an entry-level product.
While the dynamic range and punchiness of the audio playback isn’t top-notch, it also not offensive either. I know I’ve been harsh on the product, but for the price, it does an admirable job at playback. Better than AT’s primary BestBuy competitor’s entry-level model, but also not nearly as good as products just a little bit more.
But that is also its Achilles heel. To make the LP-70 shine like it should, the buyer will most likely want to swap out the included stylus for an upgraded one that offers better sound quality and a more dynamic range. However, a good stylus costs as much as the LP-70. That hurts!
If it were just the cost of the turntable factored in, it would be a great value, but I would consider a stylus upgrade, an almost necessary purchase. At that point, it brings it within ear shot of much more feature-rich competitors, that have upgraded styli already included and most offering Bluetooth compatibility.
I will give the LP-70 a recommended rating, but only 3 stars. 3 stars is average & honestly that is what the sound quality is: average. The LP-70 is a good entry-level option into the world of vinyl and will give the buyer a decent, but good experience in their new vinyl experiences. But a stylus change should be considered an essential upgrade shortly after purchase, in my opinion.

Big on features without the monthly subscription
on August 11, 2024

KEY SPECS
2560 x 1440 Front Camera Resolution
1920 x 1080 Rear Camera Resolution
16GB MicroSD Card Installed
Dual-Band Wi-Fi
Cloud Connectivity
SUMMARY
The SC220 is one of Cobra’s new line of connected dash cams. It includes nearly the full suite of expected features in a premium dash cam, but does it without having to pay the monthly subscription fee to access.
INTRODUCTION
The SC220 is the entry-level model of Cobra’s offerings. This dual view dash cam not only records the view in front of the vehicle, but it also has a rear facing camera that constantly monitors and records the interior of the vehicle (this feature can be disabled for privacy). I can see this as a huge plus for the ride share drivers, especially since Cobra has given the SC220 infra-red night vision for the interior camera at night.
The SC220 includes nearly every option that one would expect from a premium dash cam. Dual cameras with dual view capability, dual band Wi-Fi to communicate and transfer videos to the Drive Smarter app, parking protection, GPS, and the ability to send MayDay alerts via the Drive Smarter app.
The SC220 has a bunch of nice features for the money. I’m going to say this many times throughout this review, all the SC220 features are available WITHOUT paying a monthly subscription fee, like Cobra’s primary competitor does now.
INSTALLATION
The SC220 installed without issue. Cobra includes a much need trim removal tool, some 3M adhesive tape, wire clips, and a 12V “cigarette” plug with a pass-through USB port. Thank you, Cobra. That passthrough USB port made all the difference of this being a no-go for me. I didn’t want to tie up my already used 12V port.
There is no OBD connector option or hard-wire connection option included with the installation kit. While those are available, they are provided only at an additional charge from Cobra. Furthermore, these items are required if you don’t have an always on 12V cigarette socket and you want to use features such as motion detection and parking event detection.
This is one of the few demerits to the Cobra SC220. Unlike many competitors’ products, there does not appear to be any form of battery back-up to record parking incidents or motion like the competition has.
DRIVE SMARTER APP
Once the camera was installed, I downloaded the Drive Smarter app to my Galaxy smartphone. App installation and set-up was easy and straightforward. Same with connecting my phone to the dash cam. The Drive Smarter app found my dash cam within seconds and immediately prompted me for a firmware update. It too, went without fuss.
The Drive Smarter app is easy to use and navigate. After answering a few basic questions, mainly how much I wanted the dash cam to talk to the cloud, I was set-up and ready to go. The whole process took 3 minutes at best, including the firmware update. Kudos to Cobra.
As you know, if you’ve researched Cobra dash cams, their parent company Cedar also makes CB radios and most importantly Escort Radar Detectors. The Drive Smarter app is entry into the smart radar detector community. Newer escort radar detectors report locations of detected radar sites and upload that data to the cloud. Using your Cobra dash cam and the Drive Smarter app, the camera will pop up a warning on the display indicating the potential event ahead. Radar, Traffic, Accident, etc all get displayed on the screen of the SC220 or on the vehicle’s screen, if using CarPlay or Android Auto.
In addition to detected road hazards or police presence, the Drive Smarter app has its own built-in GPS and navigation function. Using the Drive Smarter app for navigation, turns your dash cam into your GPS screen. The phone will give you audible prompts about what to do, but those prompts are also shown on the SC220’s screen, as well. It’s slick and has worked without lag or hesitation. Cobra has done an excellent job on most of the Drive Smarter app.
NEGATIVES
First. As smooth and responsive as the Drive Smarter app is, the navigation is lackluster. Cobra uses Mapbox ?!?!? for mapping and navigation. I’m guessing to avoid licensing fees from Google / Waze thereby keeping costs down. Use the navigation app one time and you will see that Mapbox doesn’t even come close to Google or Waze.
There are several shortcomings compared to Google (Google owns Waze now). First, the traffic conditions lag woefully behind Google. There have been numerous times Google has reported congestion and Drive Smarter did not. Google was ALWAYS correct. When Drive Smarter finally indicated congestion, it had cleared. Same with police reports and accidents.
Second. The mapping algorithm employed by Mapbox / Drive Smarter isn’t nearly as accurate as Google. Drive Smarter indicated several times that I needed to make a U-turn to get to my destination, whereas Google directed me right to the destination. This is extremely frustrating in heavy, urban traffic.
Second. The police reports and radar notifications are often stale by the time I have encountered the events. Let’s face it, the user community on Google Maps and Waze is so much bigger, it is hard to compete with so many users nearly all online at the same time. The information is fresher and far more accurate.
Lastly, the GPS accuracy is not nearly as good as using the standalone Google Maps app. I find that the Drive Smarter app consistently tells me I have 50 feet to my destination, when I am sitting the parking lot.
CONCLUSION
The SC220 has all the necessary features expected in a premium dash cam today. It has excellent image quality, dual facing cameras, a full suite of options available from the Drive Smarter app, and most importantly allows the buyer to access all these features at no additional charge after purchase.
The SC220 is one of the fastest and most responsive dash cams I’ve paired my Galaxy phone with to date. The Drive Smarter app has not yet failed to immediately pair with the camera or get hung-up while accessing videos or features. Even simple changes to the cam itself via the capacitive touch buttons are quicker and more responsive than my other cameras. Cobra should be commended for giving the SC220 a robust processor.
In the end, if you are in the market for a full-featured dash cam, especially one like this geared clearly for ride share drivers, this should be on your list. It is quick, responsive, reliable, and easy to use. Most importantly, you have access to a bunch of advanced features and a community at no additional charge after purchase. I just wouldn’t rely too heavily on the Drive Smarter app for navigation, but it does everything else well.

INTRODUCTION
Occasionally, a manufacturer will release a product in the same lineage as its ancestors but is so different that it can be considered revolutionary. The new ROG Zephyrus falls into this category. I have a ROG Zephyrus from only a couple of years ago and this ROG feels nothing like its predecessor. It is truly a new and revolutionary design. If you couldn’t see the logo or branding, you would never know the 2 were siblings.
DISPLAY
The G16 sports Asus’ new Nebula display. Quite simply, it is stunning. It has a native resolution of 2560 x 1600 and supports 100% of the DCI color spectrum. Something that is extremely important for content creators and photographers. The Nebula display is rated for 500 nits in HDR and supports Dolby Vision. It is Pantone certified and add to that amazing accuracy a 240Hz refresh rate and a .2ms response time and you have a display that looks and performs AMAZING regardless of your task.
GAMING PERFORMANCE
I’ve played several games on the G16 as of late. My two favorites for some time now are Call of Duty MW 3 and Forza Horizon 5. For those who have not experienced the ray-tracing goodness of the new Nvidia 4000’s cards, you really need to. Combine ray-tracing with this new OLED display and visuals are stunning. Especially, when you enable the Auto HDR feature. The oversaturated world and graphics just pop!
My second go-to game is often MW3. Regardless of what people think of the game, it offers a good opportunity to test a panel’s ability to reproduce details in the darkest of scenes. Being an OLED, the G16 had zero issues. That is one of the best parts of an OLED display. They offer perfect black levels. Levels unparalleled by any other display technology. Having the power of a 4070 to play on changed the game for me. Even after playing the full campaign less than a year ago, the visual enhancements offered by the 4070 made the game feel new. The OLED panel produced shadow details I’ve never experienced before and with ray tracing combined with the performance of the 4070 produced details and intricacies I’ve never experienced before in the game. It made MW3 far more enjoyable.
But how much power is really on tap for gamers? I used a USB-C to DP adapter to make sure I was getting accurate readings. There are 2 USB-C ports on the G16. One is linked to the 890M integrated graphics and the other directly to the RTX 4070 discreet GPU. I ran each test using my new LG Ultra Gear 49” 120Hz OLED gaming monitor. These are the results I obtained using both the integrated and discreet graphics using both FSR for AMD and DLSS for NVidia:
Graphics Results
AMD @ 2560 x 1600 AMD 4k 4070 @ 2560 x 1600 4070 @ 4k
Forza 60 60 95 92
COD 48 17 108 59
F1 2023 58* 112*
*F1 2023 was not tested at 4k as neither graphics chip could render playable speeds at 4k. Even at 2560 x 1600 I had to turn off all ray-tracing effects and lower the preset to High in order to make F1 playable on the RTX 4070.
I was surprised at how well the integrated graphics performed. Forza was smooth despite locked at 60Hz and MW3 would have been passible should I have lowered resolution to 1920 x 1080. Forza numbers were obtained using the Ultra preset for both graphics’ chips. MW3 numbers were obtained using Max settings for the RTX 4070, but only balanced for the integrated 890M, as the extra graphical details paid a heavy price in the game.
I have zero complaints about either graphics processor. Even the 890M plays well and is a decent option to the much more power-hungry 4070. The first laptop I’ve used that you can enjoy a game with integrated graphics instead of it ruining the entire experience.
CPU
The new Ryzen 9 is built on AMD’s new Zen 5 architecture. It is a low-power high performing processor containing what “the other” brand would call 4P cores and 8E cores. Just how well does the new 4nm Zen 5 hold up against the competition? For testing, I turned to Handbrake (my go-to for testing CPU’s). I took a 30 minute video recorded in 1080p and compressed it to 480p/30 using Handbrake’s HQ480p setting. Encoding times utilizing only the CPU for x.264 are:
Zephyrus G16: 5:10 @ 174fps average
Desktop i5-13400: 6:38 @ 141fps average
ROG Zephyrus i7-14700KF: 3:32 @ 255fps average
The little low-power AMD keeps pace and even pulls ahead of comparable desktop competitors. While I knew it would be no match for the woefully more powerful i7 in my desktop Zephyrus, it is an impressive feat for such a low power chip. Especially one that was able to maintain 100% CPU utilization throughout the test without thermal throttling. It did spike to 98C during testing but was able to maintain no more than 97C after.
COOLING
After reviewing several gaming laptops over the years, the one thing that winds up either killing the mood or shutting down the gaming experience all together is heat / noise. There are a lot of heat producing components shoved into a tiny space. I swear I’ve heard F-15's spinning up for takeoff that are quieter than gaming laptops. Often so loud, even noise cancelling headphones can’t keep out the whine.
The new G16 is one of the quietest gaming laptops I’ve used to date. Yes, it still has fans (3 of them), but Asus has switched to liquid metal for heat transfer and has built the chassis into the cooling system. Yes, the G16’s CNC machined aluminum construction becomes part of the cooling solution. This is especially noticeable after a good, long gaming session taxing the RTX 4070. Those fps benchmarks from above? That 4070 was working VERY hard during all of my COD gaming at 4k. I went to pick up the laptop and almost dropped it. I was not expecting it to be that hot. The whole body was hot. That’s a unique solution to help thermals. I’m sure if I put the G16 on a good laptop cooler with fans blowing against the aluminum underside would help with thermals even more. Either way, the computer never lost its cool or thermal throttled during testing, but it was close, REAL CLOSE (some testing saw thermals hit 97C on the GPU).
AUDIO
Normally, I wouldn’t comment on audio in a laptop. They all stink. However, this is the best sounding laptop I’ve used to date. Markedly better than any other laptop from any other vendor I’ve tried. Audio reproduction is impressive for such a small package. Not only is there a sense of some bass (Asus claims a frequency response to 100Hz) the inclusion of Dolby Atmos tech gives a convincing, semi-realistic sense of surround sound.
NEGATIVES
Asus claims it doesn’t exist, but there is panel wobble. I don’t think it’s as bad as others around the interwebs have made it out to be. There is some wobble, but I haven’t found distracting, at least not yet. That may change.
The MediaTek Wi-Fi chip. I’m not sure why Asus would choose to partner with MediaTek. This new Wi-Fi 7 chip is supposed to be great, but it isn’t. I’ve experienced spotty connections and even the chip reporting drivers not being installed after having been working perfectly for 3 hours. For this being a Wi-Fi 7 chip, I haven’t noticed any improvements in speed or performance, even using it in an MLO configuration, that I get from a Wi-Fi 6 chipset from MediaTek’s primary competitor. If there is one thing that makes this laptop feel cheap or half-baked, it’s the Wi-Fi card.
Upgradability. I’m going to say that 2024 may very well mark the year of the end of upgradeable laptops. This G16 is one of the first. The only upgradeable parts are the SSD and Wi-Fi card (thankfully). The writing is on the wall. Shortly, users will no longer be able to swap or increase RAM. So much for saving a few bucks and upgrading RAM later at a far cheaper price than you can usually buy it for from the manufacturer. It’s going to be an all or nothing game.
FINAL THOUGHT
I’ve heaped tons of praise on Asus’ new shining star. It is well deserved. This is a revolutionary change for Asus, and they should be commended for their efforts. It’s got computing power to spare, excellent graphics power, long battery life, and runs much quieter than any other gaming laptop I’ve used to date.
EVERYTHING (except the Wi-Fi) feels premium. From its all-aluminum construction, to its stunningly beautiful display, to its tasteful lighting. This is a great piece of gear and if you need a gaming laptop or the power of a gaming laptop, without the size and weight penalties you would normally get with a machine like this, The Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 should be on your very short list of options.

Vacuum with smarts and excellent cleaning power
on August 5, 2024
Posted by: NAMO
The Shark PowerDetect puts the smarts that are in a lot of the rechargeable, handheld vacuums into a full-size up
right.
INTRODUCTION
Using a myriad of sensors located in the power head, this vacuum self-adjusts based on the cleaning scenario. The vacuum will adjust such things as brush roll speed, suction power, suction direction, etc. based on its perceived cleaning environment with data received from the embedded sensors.
The Shark PowerDetect has 4 sensors that it monitors to help improve your cleaning. Included in the sensor array are the DirtDetect Sensor, FloorDetect Sensor, and the EdgeDetect Sensor. Their names are self-explanatory.
The FloorDetect Sensor looks at what surface type the vacuum is moving over and can optimize its performance based on the floor type. Bare floors (hardwood, tile, etc.), low-pile carpet, and high-pile carpet. Each one with its own unique cleaning algorithm.
The DirtDetect Sensor constantly monitors airflow from the motorized head. If it detects poor quality / high particulate air moving past the sensor, it determines that the surface requires additional cleaning. This, in turn, increases suction power, brush roll speed, and cleaning accordingly. It works surprisingly well.
The last sensor is the EdgeDetect Sensor. Using a pair of sensors, one on each side of the motorized head, the vacuum can decide when it is sweeping up against a wall or other piece of furniture. When this sensor detects an edge, it will increase the brightness on headlight that side of the power head and divert suction power to that side.
Lastly, should the vacuum fail to correctly identify the flooring, or you simply want more control, two buttons on the handle allow you to override the SmartDetect features and use the vacuum as a normal upright.
USE
Putting these smart features on a full-size upright seems unnecessary, but I will admit, this vacuum does a GREAT job. My current vacuum is a Shark upright and while I always thought it did a good job of cleaning, now I’m not so sure. I don’t know if my old Shark, that is only 2 years old, is worn out, or the PowerDetect is that much better.
After having just cleaned the house within the past couple of days of the arrival of the PowerDetect, I wasn’t expecting too much in my ability to thoroughly test the new Shark. I had literally just vacuumed and cleaned with little to no foot traffic since. But I gave it a shot and I was honestly astonished at the results.
This is why I don’t know if my old Shark is already worn out or the PowerDetect is just that much better. After re-vacuuming 2 bedrooms and our game room, the dust bin on the new Shark was FULL. Embarrassingly full. I take pride and commit a good amount of free time in keeping up the house. I’m not a clean freak, but my stuff is kept up and clean. But, WOW. This was shocking. I would never have guessed that there would be this much trash sucked up, EVER.
DETECT SENSORS – GIMMICK OR LEGIT?
My handheld vacs with the dirt sensors work great on my hardwood and tile floors, but let's face it, they don’t work the greatest on carpets. Did Shark really change things up with the vacuum or are the detection sensors just a marketing gimmick? Only one way to find out!
There were 2 places I knew would make or break the review of this vacuum. One is right in front of the door that leads to the attic and the other was in the game room where I had cut holes in the drywall to install streaming speakers, a flat-panel TV mount and a power outlet.
Our game room gets minimal use, so the PowerDetect chugged along in low-power mode through most of the entire cleaning. But did it fail my test? No. It passed with flying colors. Both areas of interest immediately triggered the DirtDetect sensor, ramping up suction power accordingly. It took several passes before the new Shark was happy with the results and did not spin up anymore. I found it quite surprising. I installed those speakers close to two years ago. I swept up the area with a shop vac after I completed my work, followed by multiple vacummings over the course of time. Yet the new Shark PowerDetect still found the dirty spots and cleaned them accordingly. Same with the area in front of the attic door. Simply amazing. The sensors really do work as described.
Same with the EdgeDetect Sensor. It never failed to work and direct added cleaning power to whatever edge I was up against. The EdgeDetect triggers within about an inch of an edge and seemed to disengage once I got about 2 inches out.
FINAL THOUGHTS
I was surprised, impressed, and embarrassed with the new Shark. Surprised at how precise and accurate the sensor array is. Impressed with the new Shark’s cleaning ability. Embarrassed that my floors were so dirty.
This has all the same maneuverability that is built-in to all Sharks uprights, with just more brains. Unfortunately, those extras also cause the disadvantages of the vacuum. First off, those sensors can and will get dirty and require cleaning to function properly (The Shark will tell you when there is an issue). While it is not a huge chore to clean them and make things right again. It is added maintenance. Not only that, you have to be aware of what you are doing as those sensors have the potential for damage.
Secondly, all this tech adds weight. While this new Shark doesn’t feel substantially heavier than my older Shark, the weight is noticeable while cleaning. The new PowerDetect is markedly more difficult to push in carpet than my old Shark.
Still these quibbles are not enough to keep it from earning a HIGHLY RECOMMENDED rating.

Hefty and Well-Built, but offers nothing unique
on July 18, 2024
Posted by: NAMO
DESIGN
There is a definite heft to the new Rise keyboard. Made with a bunch of aluminum, it is one of the heaviest and beefiest feeling keyboards I’ve used to date. Once you put it on your desk. It is staying. Tie this big chunk of aluminum with some Red Linear switches and you have a premium product no matter how you stack it up.
Each manufacturer has their take on how their Red switches should feel while typing. HyperX is no different. I have used Red switches from nearly every manufacturer of keyboards and even though the switches are all basically the same, each keyboard feels different. HyperX has split the difference between a full-on clicky experience and a muted, almost membrane-like quietness other Red switch users chose. The Rise isn’t as loud and annoying as my go-to keyboard but isn’t muted like my gaming 65% keyboard (each from different manufacturers). It is a nice balance between the extremes of the spectrum.
The Rise is a new take on keyboard design. Instead of having keyboards that require re-purchasing the product if users want to customize their purchase, HyperX’s Rise keyboard has a removeable aluminum cover plate that magnetically attaches. Currently, there are white and blue top plates as options. There is also a swappable, magnetic badge on the side of the keyboard that can be customized as well, that I find more a gimmick than anything else.
One item that did win me over is the included ambient light sensor. I wish all manufacturers included this in their products. HyperX has even made the lowly sensor customizable as well. You have 3 options for the sensor: Off, Normal (it dims and brightens the keyboard as expected based on lighting), and Reverse (The light sensor brightens the keyboard opposite the lighting conditions, making it brighter as it gets darker). Kudos to HyperX for this addition!!
SOFTWARE
The HyperX Rise keyboard uses the new NGENUITY software for customization and control. Kudos to HP (HP must now own HyperX, as the Ngenuity software is created by HP). The app is simple and intuitive. It is easy to adjust settings are without bloatware and fluff. Not to mention, the overall download size is nearly ¼ of HyperX’s competition. Excellent!
However, the one thing the new Ngenuity software fails miserably at, is per key customization. If I have a keyboard using the wave color cycling, I like to keep certain keys’ colors static. Keys like Num Lock, Ctrl, Alt, FN, Windows Key, etc. I like to keep a static color, usually white. It is just a preference thing as I find that by doing this, I don’t change color schemes switching between work and gaming. To me, one color scheme can serve two purposes. The HyperX software fails miserably, not allowing me to do per key static colors while keeping the color cycling scheme playing on the others.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Like everything else in the world, nothing is perfect. Same with the Rise. There are things to like about the keyboard and things that are so frustratingly simple, one has to question why they aren’t included.
HyperX has designed a robust product that is uniquely customizable. More customizable than many other competitors’ products, even if some of those customizable options are gimmicky.
If you are already invested in the HyperX ecosystem, this is worth a look. If you are not in the ecosystem, I’m not sure there is enough to bring outsiders under the HyperX umbrella. Not that it is a bad product, it just doesn’t offer anything revolutionary. I don’t see the gimmicky badge or swappable faceplate changing peoples’ purchases. However, the keyboard is a good product. It has an undeniable heft, excellent clickiness to key presses, and the font and backlighting are legible and pleasing. Now HyperX needs to improve their key by key customizations, or at least make it easier to change, if I am missing something.
RECOMMENDED.

A lot of channels, Useless Remote & Display
on July 15, 2024
Posted by: NAMO
TLDR: A versatile system that is extremely easy to set-up and is wire-free (minus power). It does not have the best audio quality compared to the big player in the market but does a good job a providing an enveloping surround sound environment with an app that is easy to use and navigate. However, the remote and LED display are useless.
INSTALLATION AND SETUP
I was pleasantly surprised how easy it was to set-up the new S95TR. After unplugging my existing soundbar and plugging the HDMI cable into the appropriate eARC/ARC port in the LG, supplying power, things went very smoothly.
The soundbar, sub, and surround configuration is accomplished through LG’s minimalist LG Soundbar App. This is not a ding on LG. Quite the opposite. The app is easy to use and understand without a bunch of fuss and bloatware. Settings, functions, etc. are easily accessible via a one-page interface, with more detailed adjustments available in the simple to access and find settings menu. After my current soundbar underwent a major app design overhaul this spring, I am happy to report that LG’s app is much easier to use than their primary competitor.
While I don’t consider the app and the accompanying documentation perfect, LG has done a good job at streamlining the process. However, this isn’t to say that they couldn’t print a QR code or two in their literature to link you directly to the Play Store or Apple App Store. Come on LG.
Not sure what to expect, I installed the soundbar and powered it up. The LG app recognized the speaker after a few seconds and immediately downloaded a mandatory firmware update. No issues. The update installed without drama and after only a couple of minutes, the soundbar rebooted and was good to go.
The simplicity LG designed into the S95 and the app is impressive. Unlike some of their competition that requires you to manually pair their companion sub and surrounds, LG needs no extra steps. Getting the whole system up and running was frustration-free. After being plugged in, the sub and the surround sound speakers paired at once to the soundbar. Outstanding work LG.
USE
The S95 pairs nicely to my existing LG OLED TV, even with it being several years old and one of the first few generations. The TV recognized the soundbar and was easily setup to use the ARC channel for audio. Buyers of newer LG TVs can use the super slick Wowcast feature and eliminate the hardwired connection altogether. Sweet.
LG’s wireless communications protocol is robust and dynamic. The 4 speakers (soundbar, sub, 2 surrounds) blend together with no discernible lag or awkward timing imbalance. While I could not find specs on the system, the surrounds appear to support the full audio spectrum 20Hz – 20kHz, or close enough that the sub can pick up for what they lack. Sound is enveloping.
LG offers a variety of listening modes, which I find are mostly a gimmick. I find the AI Sound Pro my most used listening mode. Other modes just make the audio sound un-natural and sadly, muted. One thing I find odd, is that by default the surround function is turned off when setting up the system. While this may be the “proper” way to use the S95, I find it odd that LG wouldn’t showcase the surrounds and have them on by default. For those that have a home theater AVR, this setting enables “All Channel Stereo” or “Multi-Channel Stereo” to use the setting name from a competitor.
NEGATIVES
LG has tried too hard to copy their greatest home streaming speaker ecosystem. The minimalist approach to the S95 doesn’t work nearly as well as the competition. The 3 multi-colored LED’s on the front panel of the S95 do absolutely nothing to help out. After installing and trying the speakers, I still have no idea what the different colors really mean or why I would even care. I agree with what others have said around the interwebs, to make the soundbar great, LG needs to have a better display or eliminate the LED’s all together. I get why they are there. My current big name streaming system gives no feedback without directly using the app. LG has tried to remedy this problem by installing the 3 LED’s, but the end result is lackluster and unhelpful. A mark missed. This missed mark also extends to the remote control. With minimal feedback offered via the LED’s using the remote to change functions and control the soundbar turns into a guessing game. To me the remote is useless. It easier just to use the app to get what you want versus the remote. It’s easier, eliminates guesswork, and provides feeback that your commands were sent and recognized.
While the LG offers a plethora of channels, the overall sound quality from each of those channels are not as good as my primary soundbar’s drivers. The LG sounds overly bright, thin, and tinny. Not horrible, or fingernails on a chalkboard, but none the less are inferior to their streaming rival’s products. I think some of this awkwardness could be tuned out via a firmware update, but as used and configured with the LG room correction app, the drivers and audio sound harsher than the competition.
Lastly, I have to comment on LG’s poor mounting solution for their soundbar. I’ve sound bars from 4 different manufacturers now and the LG implementation ties as the worst. Not only are the mounting brackets for the soundbar and surrounds ugly, but the soundbar’s mounting locations are in the wrong place for the American market. The soundbar’s mounting holes are 35” apart, center-to-center. National building code requires wall studs a maximum of 16” on center. This squarely places one or both the mounting brackets out of location of a stud, and if mounting on drywall, forces the buyer to utilize a less than ideal drywall anchor to mount at least one of the two brackets. LG’s competitors have a much better bracket to mount their product, especially the biggest player in the home speaker streaming market. Their bracket is thinner, spans the entire length of the soundbar and is nearly invisible once installed and the speaker mounted. Even with the S95 mounted, the brackets look like cheap after thoughts.
FINAL THOUGHTS
LG has done a good job of updating its S95 lineup. There are a lot of channels to take advantage of the latest and greatest Dolby Atmos mixes in music and movies. Channel timing is spot on with no discernible lag between the sound and video, at least in my use.
Setup is simple and LG should be commended for streamlining the entire process like they have done. The app is easy to use and understand with all the basics and little to no fluff to add confusion. To make things even easier, LG has even included an AI Room Calibration feature to their app. It works as intended, even if more rudimentary than the competition.
While I find the sound quality of my current soundbar superior to the LG, it doesn’t make the S95 bad. It is just a matter of preference. Honestly, my current system should sound better, as I’ve paid more for just the soundbar and sub than this whole LG system retails for. The difference in price helps overcome the perceived thinness (and at times, tinniness) of the LG drivers. Owners looking for a premium system to complement their TV should put this on their list of auditions. The LG S95 offers a full surround experience in one easy-to-use, tidy, package.

Increased Overall Size, but Smaller Baskets
on June 25, 2024
Posted by: NAMO
TLDR: The DoubleStack offers advantages over the normal XL models, but the normal XL models have more accommodating baskets, allowing larger portions of food to be cooked in each one.
INTRODUCTION
My Ninja Air Fryers are a staple in the household. They are versatile, easy to use, and most importantly, easy to clean up afterwards. During a 5-day work week, the Ninjas get used at least 2 of those days and when I’m not using the air fryer, I am probably using the Ninja Woodfire grill. Like I said, my Ninjas get used heavily by us.
The DoubleStack XL is a new twist on the dual air fryer. Instead of placing identical baskets side by side and keeping the overhead heating elements, Ninja redesigned the machine, stacking baskets on top of each other and moving the fans and heating elements to the rear. Ninja touts the space-saving design of this layout and while it is true that this saves horizontal counter space, the DoubleStack still takes up a good amount of real estate, they are just trading horizontal real estate for vertical.
The DoubleStack XL sports a generous 10qt capacity, easily besting my single basket XL’s capacity of 6.5qts. Unfortunately, while overall volume has increased, having 2 baskets means each basket’s capacity drops to 5qts, substantially smaller than the 6.5qt basket and making some things challenging to fit in at one time, in one basket.
To make up for this, Ninja has come up with a clever dual level basket design. A traditional, perforated plate sits on the bottom on the basket, elevating the bottom level off the floor. A wire rack can then be dropped into the basket, allowing for another level of cooking. It’s a slick idea and allows for cooking up to 4 different things all at once.
Ninja also thought ahead realizing cooking up to 4 different things, all at the same time, could be a pain logistically. In their wisdom, Ninja set the DoubleStack up to take out the guesswork and stress. Cooking the exact same thing in both baskets? No problem. Use the Match Cook button. It cooks both baskets the same. Cooking 2 different meals in the baskets? No problem. Click the Smart Finish button, set your cooking time and temps and the Ninja will make sure everything gets done at the same time. It’s simple. It’s intuitive. It’s logical. Kudos Ninja!!
USE
I was a bit skeptical when I first looked at the new design. Why mess with something that has proven solid for Ninja and countless others? Moving the cooking elements to the back, exhausting out the right side seemed illogical. The main selling points of having an overhead cooking configuration is that all the items in the basket get even heat distribution. Heat gets blown down on all items uniformly, I don’t see how it would be possible with all the items in the DoubleStack being in the back. Surely, the items in the back of the basket will get cooked much more than those at the front and furthest away from the heating elements.
To test this theory out, I wanted to start with cooking something not as forgiving as a burger or steaks. I decided on asparagus along with some blackened salmon. I will admit, whatever Ninja did during the design phase paid off. The DoubleStack cooked all the salmon filets evenly and uniformly. The filet closest to the back were no more cooked than the filet at the very front. I was quite surprised at the uniformity.
CONCLUSION
To date, I have made close to a dozen different foods in the new DoubleStack XL. All the kudos I’ve given to my other Ninja products applies to the DoubleStack. Food cooks evenly and quickly. The new design that I was skeptical about before use, has won me over. Regardless of what protein I’m cooking, what vegetable I’m cooking, or what meal I’m preparing together in one basket, the DoubleStack has performed flawlessly.
The only nit pick is that due to the smaller basket volume, I find myself using both baskets to cook a full meal versus what I would normally be able to get away with just one in my normal XL. However, the ability to double stack food in the DoubleStack is a game changer in this household. Being able to put vegetables under your protein in the same basket and have them both turn out exceptionally well, is great. The versatility of the DoubleStack XL has cut back on the amount this family uses the cooktop and microwave during meal prep. Parts of the meals we would normally cook separate from the air fryer can now be included during cooking.
Way to go Ninja. Another home run, in my opinion.

32” 4K Monitor w/ HDR10+ & Perfect Blacks
on June 23, 2024
Posted by: NAMO
TLDR: The new Samsung Odyssey G8 combines the best features of a computer monitor, TV, and smart streaming device. You would be hard pressed to find a better monitor.
KEY SPECS
Anti-Glare OLED Panel
4k Resolution
240Hz Refresh Rate
HDR 10 / HDR 10+
99% Color Gamut Reproduction
Bluetooth 5.2
USB 3.0 Hub
1 x DP 1.4 Port (HDCP 2.2)
2 x HDMI 2.1 Ports (HDCP 2.2)
Tilt / Swivel / Pivot / Height Adjustments (including 90 degrees of rotation)
SET-UP
This is the first computer monitor I have owned that has an actual set-up process. Samsung has combined elements of their best line of Odyssey gaming monitors with their wildly popular OLED line of televisions. This is the first monitor I have had that doubles not only as a computer monitor, but also as a standalone streaming device.
Samsung’s Tizen OS does an admirable job of walking you through to the initial monitor configuration, including customizing and installing desired streaming apps. The list of available apps is just as comprehensive as you would get with an external streaming stick, but built into a very slick looking interface, specific to Samsung. All the major players are available, including Netflix, Prime, Hulu, Fandango, Plex, Disney, etc. All major streaming services are present, as are Samsung's TV Hub, Samsung Smart Apps, and even gaming services are present allowing you to play certain games directly via an app like XBox without a console.
Apps, settings, adjustments, etc are all accessible via the included remote control. The remote is simple and intuitive and while it only has a few buttons to work with, it is sufficient to get you to where you need to be without a lot of unnecessary controls. Simple and easy to operate. One thing worth noting about the remote, it is rechargeable. It has a small solar panel on the back side to easily recharge it by laying it upside down during the day. Super slick!
PERFORMANCE
If you have never used an OLED monitor for productivity or gaming, you are definitely missing out. No other panel technology can compare to the picture quality of an OLED. Blacks are perfectly black and shadow details are on a whole other level. LCD and LED panels can’t completely shut off all their pixels, leading to light bleed in the darker parts of the screen, even with full array local dimming. It is just the inherent nature of the technology. OLED panels can fully shut off unused pixels, making blacks perfectly black.
Games like Call of Duty take full advantage of this technology. Players that like to hide in shadows
because it makes them so hard to distinguish no longer have the advantage of concealment. Items that used to get washed out in the darker parts of the screen, no longer bleed together and remain visible.
Combine those awesome black levels with what used to be an unheard of refresh rate of 240Hz for an OLED panel and you get a winning combination. Frame rates are smooth and judder-free. Samsung claims a G-t-G refresh time of only .03ms response time. While I have no way to measure this, I will say that this monitor’s responsiveness is far superior to the Samsung monitor it replaces.
OLED BURN-IN
Burn-in is often an area that keeps folks away from taking the plunge into the world of the OLED. Rightfully so. While this monitor is new and does not have any form of noticeable burn-in, I am happy to report that my other Samsung OLED monitors that are older than this, have not exhibited any burn-in artifacts to date, even though they are inferior models compared to the new G8.
Samsung has gone to great lengths to help prevent the dreaded burn-in. Incorporating technologies like a Dynamic Cooling System, Thermal Modulation System, and most importantly for those that want to use the monitor as a streaming device, Logo and Taskbar Detection. All technologies Samsung has built-in to the firmware to help ensure years of trouble-free service. For example, the Dynamic Cooling System uses and actual heat-pipe, much like on a CPU cooler to keep the OLED panel cool. The Thermal Modulation System analyzes the brightest parts of screen and automatically reduces peak brightness to prevent overheating. Excellent!! All these algorithms work seamlessly and unnoticeably in the background.
NEGATIVES
While the G8 does support HDR 10 and HDR 10+, there is no support for Dolby Vision. Not a huge loss, as HDR 10 is the more common standard of the two.
Speaking of High Dynamic Range, while the monitor is capable of displaying HDR content, it only reaches a peak brightness of 250 nits. While there are so many things to praise about OLED technology, this is one area where the technology falls short of its normal LED and LCD counterparts.
FINAL THOUGHTS
If I haven’t already gushed enough over the new G8, I wanted to make sure that it wasn’t just me being awe inspired by a new shiny gizmo. I wanted a second opinion, as I am already partial to OLED’s to begin with.
I brought this monitor in to my teenager’s room for him to try out. I told him nothing about the monitor, simply that was a new 32” monitor and as he plays so many video games, I wanted a second opinion.
His monitor is a 32” LED monitor and he has spent hundreds of hours gaming on it with no complaints. It sports a 2560 x 1440 resolution with only a 60Hz refresh rate. All his current games of choice have their settings at Max, Epic, or whatever the best is by the game.
After getting it all set-up, I asked him to try a few games and play for a while and report back to me later in the day with his opinion. It didn’t take long. He queued up a match in Call of Duty: Warzone. He summed up my entire review in just one sentence. After no more than 5 minutes of playing it, he paused the game, his eyes big, turned to me and said: “Whoa, this thing is Amazing!” His opinion has changed since.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
I would recommend this to a friend!

What if a vacuum was so advanced it could sense the type of floor it~s cleaning? BISSELL SurfaceSense Pet vacuum can! Its intelligent SurfaceSense Technology can detect floor types and automatically adjust the brush roll speed to give you optimal cleaning performance on any floor type. It~s also our first vacuum with a Tangle-Free, Multi-Surface Brush Roll which has stiff bristles for cleaning carpet and soft bristles for vacuuming hard floors, so it can pick up everything from fine dust to larger debris across all floor types. SurfaceSense Pet vacuum has a One Touch, Easy Empty dirt tank and a SmartSeal Allergen System that traps fine dust and allergens while you clean. The LED headlights illuminate hidden dirt and debris while the Quick Release Extension Wand and above floor tools work together to clean hard-to-reach spaces, like upholstery and stairs. And this vacuum doesn~t just clean up after pets, it helps save them, too! BISSELL proudly supports BISSELL Pet Foundation and its mission to help save homeless pets. When you buy a BISSELL product, you help save pets. We~re proud to design products that help make pet messes, odors and pet homelessness disappear.

Is this a self-propelled vacuum? Is there a Bissell that is?

Does this laptop have a MUX switch?

Good Evening,

I don't believe so. Unlike other laptops, that have both integrated graphics for the main display and an aftermarket solution (AMD or nVidia) for an external display, this laptop appears to be use the onboard, integrated graphics at all times.

About how long does the battery last from a full charge?

Good Evening,

I'm getting roughly 2-3 hours of casual use (watching videos, web surfing, emails, etc)

If I'm gaming, I get an hour or so, depending on the graphics needs of the game.

DOES THE POWER BUTTON HAVE TO BE PHYSICALLY CONTINUALLY HELD DOWN BY THE USER TO KEEP THE DEVICE IN THE RUNNING MODE ( AS WITH THE DYSON CORDLESS VACUUMS ) ?

Good Afternoon,
No, you don't have to hold the trigger down the whole time like your Dyson. There is a small lever just above your thumb (assuming you are right-handed) that can be used to hold the trigger down while in use.

Thanks.

Can you attach a sub to this system as well for extra bass, or are you stuck with just the 2 included speakers? And is the amp powerful enough for a sub?

Good Evening. Yes, you can pair a sub with this system. Using the Sonos app, you can add a Sonos sub or the amp has a line out to add a sub via line out connection. The sub will have to be self powered, the Sonos amp will not supply power to drive the sub.

Thanks.
