This is a great DVD player for the price. It has a very nice playback picture. The picture and digital sound conversion from my old VHS(home movie and unprotected movie) tapes to DVD with the up conversion was stunning. Easy to use with simple functions. The record feature is slick. This unit is best suited for recording movies, programs and television to DVD if you don't have TIVO (or similar DVR receivers) or simply want your TIVO programs on DVD. It WILL NOT burn copyrighted VHS tapes. If you are looking for something to convert your old VHS movie collection to DVD this unit is not for you. That's what I was looking to do and I need to continue my search. Other than that it is a great unit for what it was meant to do. I would recommend this unit for what it was intended to do.
What's great about it: Great Picture quality from VHS to DVD

The website ad clearly states that this product is compatible with DL discs, but there is no mention of DL in the instruction manual, and upon attempting to insert a DL disc, you get a message stating it's an incompatible disc.
Other than that, this seems to be a great product. You can adjust the record settings to record up to 240 minutes (4 hours) on a standard DVD+R or -R disc.
What's great about it: Good starter DVD recorder
What's not so great: Isn't compatible with DL (dual layer) discs

This DVD recorder is great, its very easy to record from our DVR or TV. We started recording lots of movies from HBO to our DVR and began to run out of space, and this was our solution! We also have been making nice compilation DVDs of our 2year olds favorite shows (6hr discs of all the 30 min kid shows). This works out well for making DVDs for our little mini DVD player for our car. Since the quality is pretty bad the more you shove on a DVD, but on an 8in DVD screen, who cares! The only thing it doesn't do is copy protected DVDs , but that's ok, and fair I guess! I also have easily backed up my camcorder DVCs on here. Just hooked up the camcorder and hit record for an hour... and done! For paying 119.00, you can't go wrong! I love the title feature too, its very easy! I didn't have trouble setting things up like others did either, yes the manual is a little confusing, but I had an easier time figuring it out on my own. If you are looking for a cheap DVD recorder, get this one!

I have had this unit for about a month now and recorded several TV programs and home videotapes without any problems. Picture quality is excellent! Directions make it easy to chapter, title, and finalize DVD's, to play on other DVD players. Keep in mind, however, that this does NOT have a tuner, so you cannot record one program and watch another at the same time. If your going to be away from home, remember to set the timer, leave your cable or satellite box ON and turn the TV off before you leave. It will record your desired program. Overall, I am very satisfied with this unit.
What's great about it: Easy to use, does what it's supposed to. Worth the price.
What's not so great: Does not have a tuner. Must watch what you are recording.

I bought this DVD recorder to convert camcorder video (from 8mm tapes) to DVD, partly as a backup, but also to share the DVD's with family. I simply put in a disk, plug in my camcorder, and start recording. It's very simple. No problems at all. I use single layer DVD+R disks which exactly match a 2 hour 8mm tape when using "standard play" recording mode. I bought this unit because it was the cheapest I found, probably because it does not have a tuner.

The specifications for this unit state that it can write both +R dual layer & -R dual layer disks. When picked up the unit at the store, I noticed that the box didn't show any Dual Layer features on the box. When I got home and opened the manual, I learned that the website was incorrect. So I had to make a 30 mile trek back to the store to return it. I wish Best Buy was more careful with their website, they wasted my time and gas so I am kind of miffed...
What's great about it: None
What's not so great: The website shows incorrect specifications...

I had a hard time understanding the directions and I am the one who knows how to install things. Also, I couldnt figure out how to get it to work with my cable system, no help from the instructions either. I had to bring it back to the store for a refund. I would not recommend this dvd recorder to anybody.
