Nowhere does it say in the specs online that an external tuner is needed to record from cable. Will not work with cable coming straight from the outlet. A cable box needed which would be another cost so why not just get a cable box that has a DVR included.

I guess I got what I paid for... I really need a DVD player that will make my homemade DVDs look great on my new Sony HDTV. I didn't think it was possible until I played one of my DVDs on a friend's Phillips HD Upconversion DVD player. Wow! Presto, crisp lines! I will just have to dig a little deeper to come up with funds to purchase a better product.
What's great about it: Cheap Price / Inexpensive
What's not so great: No improved HD quality; tiny, hard to read buttons

I purchased the Toshiba DVD Recorder after my Sony recorder quit working and couldn't be repaired. It was fairly easy to use, though the picture was not quite as sharp over the HDMI interface as the Sony. I rented the movie "Leatherheads" from BlockBuster when it was released last week and was unable to play it. The message was "Disk Error -- Playback feature may not be available on this disc." BlockBuster was very nice about it and replaced it twice, but all 3 discs had the same problem. Finally I tried the disc on my 6 year old Panasonic and it played without any problem. I talked to Toshiba Customer Service about the problem and they told me that their units are not guaranteed to play all DVD formats -- apparently this includes pre-recorded videos. Since the problem was not occuring on every disc, it was not their problem and there was nothing they would do. I originally purchased the unit after reading reviews that said Toshiba Customer Service was above average, but that's not been my experience. I can't recommend this unit. But if you do buy one, keep your old DVD player so you can play the movies that the Toshiba won't!!!
What's great about it: Fairly ease to use
What's not so great: Won't play all pre-recorded videos!

Setting this up was a challenge - I'm not a techno-nerd but I'm also not completely clueless when it comes to electronics. First, it only came with one set of a/v cords (red, yellow, white) - you need two. You also need a video cable - which depends on your tv type. The manual is terrible - I figured it out via trial and error. Once I got it up on the screen I went thru the manual to follow the instructions to set it up. I followed to the letter and got a blank blue screen that I couldn't get rid of. I cleared it back to the defaults and didn't make any of the adjustments the manual suggested. I read it and the toubleshooting part several times. I set the date and time and it works fine - programming is super easy. I don't have High Def and my picture is good. It's a good value for the price but be aware you'll have to spend another $10-25 on cables. Also, when recording you can't just whip a DVD in or out quickly. The first time the DVD goes in it spends a bout 45-60 seconds formatting and then when you stop, it writes to the DVD and then when insert a disk that's already formatted, you still have to wait about 30-45 seconds for it to load. So, there's a little delay when inserting and removing DVDs - plan for it if you're recording something long and continuous because you'll miss a few minutes of your show while the DVD prepares itself. It's not a bad DVD-R for the price and not sure if the more expensive models have the same issues but now that it's set up I like it.
What's great about it: Easy to set the timer, decent picture
What's not so great: Setup, can't quickly switch DVD's, manual is poorly written

Bought for a decent price although never did figure out how to record on it, it was great for playing DVD. Used the TV tuner on it to watch TV up to yesterday about three years old and now I need to buy a new one. Got three years worth of use out of it.

You have to watch the same show you record!!!. This totally defeats the purpose of having a DVD recorder. This was suppose to replace my VCR. Ya right.
What's great about it: Easy to use and hook up
What's not so great: No digital tuner so if you want to watch a different show and record a different show you can't

From the start the tray made a grinding noise when it opened. Now after 5 months it stopped working. I wish I had taken it back immediately while it was still under warranty. I bought the D-R410KU model which upgrades only to 1080i instead of 1080p but I would guess that the tray mechanism is the same.
What's great about it: Good price
What's not so great: Tray stopped opening after 5 months with very little use.

I bought this DVD player about a month ago and I have not had one probelm with it. The DVD recording is very easy to and the quality comes out great every time. The only thing that I was dissapointed about was the 1080p upconversion. I thought that the quality would be better than it is. I'm not saying that the quality is bad; it is great, but definatley not 1080p.
What's great about it: Easy to Use, Detailed Owners Manual, Great Quality Recordings
