Plays whatever it records, works perfectly for DVD+RW and all the rest. Don't waste your time and money with anything else before you try this machine. Very smooth. If it doesn't break, my twenty year dependence on VHS tapes is over.
What's great about it: easy to use - records beautifully

If you have owned and operated a VCR this DVD recorder will be a no brainer for you. I had it up and running in about 10 minutes without looking at the manual. Very simple to operate and program. The unit looks good and the menu system is easy to navigate. On the down side it is a bit loud when it spins up a DVD disc. The only other downside I found is finalizing a disc takes a bit of time. To be honest this is my first DVD recorder so this is only my impression. I would plan on about five minutes for this function. All in all this is an excellent value. I am still impressed at how well the unit performs, it's ease of operation, good looks, and low price. If you are an average user like myself I can't see you being unhappy with this unit.
What's great about it: Very easy set up, easy to use
What's not so great: Can be loud. Finalizing a disc is slow

This DVD player/recorder works great and has all the features that it claims to have. Not only does this player record DVDs from whatever it sees on the screen but it also plays DVDs. The picture quality is amazing, looks just like HD. It does take some time to learn how to use the record feature but it is still relatively simple, just like recording onto a VHS tape. I usually consult the quick reference guide they include in the box just to be sure I don't miss a step. The nice thing is that the player has different quality settings when recording, so you can choose between a bunch depending on whether you want to record a shorter or longer program or movie. Overall, this is a great value for the money and is a good investment for any home theater system.
What's great about it: Does exactly what it says it does and is a good value
What's not so great: Takes time to learn how to use the record feature

I don't think this machine has ever worked properly since the day I bought it. At first it seemed to work fine. I thought the fact that it occasionally quit playing mid stream had something to do with my setting the timer wrong. However, as time went on, I starting getting disk corrupted errors. (Disks played fine on our other machine.) In addition, sometimes while watching, the screen would suddenly go black and the "game" display would show up on my screen, then the screen would come back on in a couple of minutes. Now it will play a disk for a few minutes then either 1.) freezes the picture (it does not come back on) or 2.) fades to black (this sometimes comes back on), or 3.) says there is a disk corruption (happens with either new or previously used disks and this locks up my machine completely.) I've only had this recorder barely 6 months and since the warranty is for 90 days, tough luck for me. My suggestion: Buy something else.
What's great about it: Nothing
What's not so great: My Suggestion: Buy Something Else!

Don't bother! This unit DIED on day 91 after purchase. As such, Toshiba USA Customer "Service" (I use the term loosely) did everything they could to make it difficult to receive a replacement (Including $50 payment because the unit didn't die 1 day sooner). It would have been cheaper to buy a unit at twice this unit's cost and save the time and hassle of trying to get Toshiba USA to satisfactorily stand behind their product. NEVER AGAIN!
Not only would I NOT recommend this item to a friend? I wouldn't recommend it to an enemy.

first of all, i only use this as a simple dvd player. i dont have an elaborate tv set up, i have a 40' 1080p 120hz samsung i use in my dorm room. i got this unit for its upconversion qualities. in anycase it makes my regular dvds look better then they would on a regular dvd player. the unit makes noise when it loads a dvd but is very quiet when it is playing. that is all i use the unit for, and for that, i am happy with the product and what i spent for it.

Nice visual but no audio playing from their recorded disks. Yes, I did finalize the disks. It's taking longer than expected to find all the little nits to get this machine to do what I wanted to do with it, record old tapes onto DVD. Overall, this is a pain in the butt. Don't lose the manual! Read, reread and then reread again. Remote - nuisance. Sometimes, a box has more features than 99% of the users are ever going to want to use. I would love to see the remotes before purchasing, it'd certainly let me know their intended users - not me.
