Good try, but failed attempt at a good GPS

The purpose of a GPS is primarily to get you from pont A to B. If it can't do that efficiently, I'd classify it as a "not ready of prime time" product. The 255W is just that.
I installed the latest maps, and POI database and still find that I cannot rely on it to get me from here to there as the databases are out of date, or innacurate.
The GPS, itself if fine, but the deal killer is that it doesn't work very well. That's a shame as TomTom runs circles around Garmin for its ability to get you from that A to B although the Garmin is easier to use.
Don't but a Garmin unless you like to flip a coin as to whether the next destination will take to miles from where you want to go.
What's great about it: Mount, feature set
What's not so great: Old map and poiint of interest database
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I got this GPS as a Christmas gift. It functions well! It's very easy to use, the POI database is very handy for my area and the unit performs admirably.
The display is very bright and clear, the voice prompts are clear and useful and the device is overall a high quality unit. I have used it every day since I received it for locations close and far. The traffic feature seems to work as well.
My only gripes are how long it takes to initially acquire satellite data and that it does not have a USB cable included. I've spent almost 10 minutes on a few events waiting for the initial satellite acquisition to complete. Also, the lack of the USB cable is petty and should be included to allow the user to at least update the unit. Overall, these are small gripes for an otherwise decent unit.
What's great about it: Ease of use, display, voice assist
What's not so great: Reception, no USB cable included
I would recommend this to a friend!

This was my first GPS I ever owned and it works really great. The screen is clear and bright, as are the directions. The spoken directions and street names are clear and the volume is adjustable and is not too quiet. I bought this the day after Thanksgiving to use primarily for our family trip from Mishawaka, Indiana to Orlando, Florida and back again. This GPS got us there in record time without a hitch - and I am not the greatest with directions. The traffic receiver was so/so - it works on major routes/cities and from what I have read it bases its traffic estimations off other Garmins in your area - so readings can very. What I really liked about this electronic was its ease of use and how to find places while you are traveling. It was so easy/user friendly to find all of the places we wanted to go including all the different dining hot spots while we were traveling. I also purchased a case that was on sale and I didn't need any other accessories - the windshield mounting clip works perectly. Again, awesome device and I do not regret buying it.
What's great about it: Easy to setup, use, and update
What's not so great: Sometimes around big cities.
I would recommend this to a friend!

So far I've used this GPS on one trip from Indiana to Florida and it did a good job getting us there and back. The audio driving instructions are really clear and understandable and the screen is easy to see in numerous conditions. Overall I'm very pleased with my purchase. If there is any negative it would be that the unit seemed to get confused on the best route to take when making multiple turns in a short time period. I noticed this when I would pull off the interstate to get gas, a couple of times it tried to re-route us to local roads versus back to the interstate. Once I turned back onto the interstate it would recalculate and I would be back to the original route.
What's great about it: Screen is easy to see both in daylight and nighttime, audio is clear, menu easy to navigate
What's not so great: The GPS seemed to get confused when pulling off the interstate and making multiple turns in a short amount of time
I would recommend this to a friend!

from NASSAU COUNTY,NY
It took only a few minutes to set up. Simple to program home address, and all other destinations. The FM traffic feature worked great in the NY metro area
indicatiing where traffic was bad and if I wanted , how to bypass it.
The window mount works great and comes off easily as long as you remember to pull the rubber tab. A free map upgrade came as long as you register the gps within a month of purchase and download the maps within a month. The registration and download require a USB cable which does not come with the unit. The download took ablout two hours using a cable modem connection.
What's great about it: EASY SET UP,GREAT PRICE,EASY TO USE,FM TRAFFIC WORKS GREAT IN METRO AREA
What's not so great: NO USB CABLE,USER MANUEL ONLY AVAILABLE ON-LINE AS A DOWNLOAD
I would recommend this to a friend!

This is my second GPS, replacing a make which is no longer supported (not Garmin). As with anything, you need to perform some tasks differently. One thing that seems to be easier: Setting a 'favorite' spot for your current location. Ran a couple test trips & it worked fine. When necessary, I was able to alter the route (using waypoints) to match my given route preference.
I either have not had a traffic issue or don't have the Navteq in Chicago so I can't comment on this feature.
Besides my personal unit I also bought two more, for my college age kids who need to travel to clinicals, student teaching sites, etc.
What's great about it: Very easy to set-up, intuitive to use.
What's not so great: I have not used it enough to find any issues.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Bestbuy is the only place where you can get a traffic version of the nuvi255w. The price was about $90 off the normal price. The unit includes all the absolutely necessary features.
What's great about it: Provides traffic information as well as directions. Very easy to set up and use. Great price!
What's not so great: Sound is a little "tinny", but easy to understand - Probably due to the small size and small speaker.
I would recommend this to a friend!
