Traveled from AZ to LA. Didn't matter if in the desert or LA area, unit would freeze up. If I was driving alone, would have no direction at all, as you can't play w/it while driving. Partner was able to get it going, but this would happen over and over again.
If you change your routing, it would come back with alternate directions quickly. BUT, many times it was cutting in/out, like a cell phone out of range. Yet this happened at any time...in deserted areas or the large city. No rhyme or reason to this. No buildings around, or w/buildings around. Sometimes it worked in tunnels, sometimes it didn't. Bad part was, when it did give directions, if cutting in/out, you'd only hear part of the directions. Good thing it repeats itself as you approach, but several times, even that cut in/out and again, not next to any bldgs. Was mostly in outskirts of LA area, like Anaheim or at beaches.
I have friends/relatives w/older models that work fine...they just get to a clearer area and it reboots itself. This one didn't. Stayed frozen for well over 15 minutes (was testing it) and until you reset it yourself, wouldn't work. Once it was turned back on, it resumed same route vocally, even before you got back to the map page.
The traffic feature was accurate only 1/2 the time..no voice to rely on, if you are solo in the car. You have to touch the red car screen area to find out...how do you play w/this while driving alone???? Only once did a voice come on as an alert for traffic up ahead, but then it was too late to do anything about it.
If not for partner, would have been lost many times. Had to rely on paper maps as well, as the whole route would never display w/out playing with this...again, impossible to do while driving alone. Can't recommend this to friends, as they are single and this would not help them.
What's great about it: Easy to see
What's not so great: Voice choppy, freezes up constantly

This was my second GPS, so I had a better idea of exactly what I wanted, and the 255wt has filled the bill. Mine came with a neat little friction mount as a part of a package deal which closed the deal for me.
Sometimes hard to read in direct sunlight. Otherwise, efficient and economical operation. Took it on a trip out West, and it did not fail us once.
Not as sophisticated as the more expensive Garmin units, but does not pretend to be. It just gets the job done.
What's great about it: Easy to use
What's not so great: Sometimes hard to see in direct sunlight
I would recommend this to a friend!

This GPS works great. The screen is easy to read and it's easy to use. The only improvements I would have liked would be a volume control and it says that it comes with Traffic updates but you need to register online. I followed the instructions provided but was unable to register for traffic updates. I would have bought a less expensive model had I known I would not be able to have the Traffic Updates.

This is our 1st GPS and I came home to read more reviews & read about the box being mislabeled & what one really gets is a 255w, instead of a 'wt' (includes traffic updates). I did see on the front of the box 255wt and on the side, it says it contains a 255w. I called up Best Buy & after going around & around about the wt vs. w, the guy explained that if I were to read further down on the side of the box, it does explain that it includes a FM/traffic receiver (built into the charger). So glad I do not have to return our GPS. I am giving it high marks, because it should meet our needs. If it doesn't, I bought the extended warranty. Btw, I got it for the $129. I would not have paid any more for this, like many unfortunately have.
What's great about it: user friendly
What's not so great: it can tell me how to get to Disney in seconds, but no $ to get there :)

After some pretty lengthy research, I bought this model primarily because of the "lifetime free traffic updates" feature. The box indicated that it was the 255WT model, and it was priced accordingly, but the actual unit shows it is a 255W. Thinking that the traffic updates feature might be downloaded, I spent over an hour downloading the updated maps and "updated" software, only to find that they are quite outdated - businesses that have been boarded up for well over a year are included in the "Points of Interest" - and no traffic updates. I probably would keep the unit if the POI's were accurate, but since they are significantly outdated - back it goes.
What's great about it: Appears to be easy to read in bright light
What's not so great: Outdated maps, mislabeled box, missing traffic updates feature

A. The Good: Garmin has addressed many of the issues with the lower cost 2XX line such as: - Voice guidance is clearer than the 255w. Appears that they have added some pre-emphasis for lower frequencies. - Volume. It is LOUD. I am using it at 50% or below. Anything above 80% causes distortion. - Searches nearby cities in its database for streets. For example, East Hartford Twn and East Hartford. The older IQUE series needed to be specific. Would be great if we could search by ZIP code. - Routing engine - almost as good as the 660. - Initial route calculation is very fast; re-route calculation is quite reasonable (Magellan is faster).
B. Yet to be addressed: 1. Major flaw: - This unit has difficulty differentiating between "right" and "left". If it tells you to turn left, check the visual display, you may need to turn right. Also, if it says the destination is on the left, the destination may be on the right.
2. Minor annoyances: - The text-to-speech engine still leaves a lot to be desired. Here in Connecticut, the state highways are pronounced as "court", for example "Turn left on court 5" instead of "turn left on Connecticut 5". Takes a little getting used to. - My old IQUE used to automatically zoom out to the two end points of the route, progressively zooming in as the distance to the next turn got smaller. This unit requires manual zooming out and there is a limit. It does zoom in as the distance to the next turn gets smaller, promptly forgetting the zoom out setting, forcing the manual zoom out again. - When searching for restaurants. Garmin's view of "Asian" appears to be Chinese only. Someone please tell Garmin that there are other countries in Asia - 37 at the last count.
What's great about it: Inexpensive Garmin with lifetime traffic
What's not so great: Unit has trouble distinguishing "right" from "left"

I typically shy away from 'gadgets' because of fear of using them, not understanding them or not knowing how to use them. This, however, is very easy to set up and use. Saved me 45 minutes on a 3 1/2 hour trip the first weekend I used it. If you travel much get one now!
What's great about it: Easy to use, even for non-gadget people

I purchased this Garmin because I was moving to a new city and it had all the features I wanted in a GPS. I haven't had any major issues with it. However, it freezes when it has to "Recalculate" directions. A new city this is frustrating because I don't know where I'm going, but I would restart it and then it would work fine.
What's great about it: mph, easy to use, shortest/fastest distance
