Ooma was simple to setup with it connected directly to a cordless handset base. We needed it to ring through our wall jacks so that the TV could be connected to a phone line for DirecTV. I followed the directions from Ooma and was able to get it to work through the phone jacks. I have cancelled my account with the phone company and within a few months this will pay for itself and start saving us money!
What's great about it: Easy Setup, Great Features.
What's not so great: initial cost
I would recommend this to a friend!

Soooo happy to ditch AT&T and all their service fees! Works fine, voice quality is comparable to traditional landline. Costs us $3.47 per month. There is sometimes a very slight delay when answering a call, but once you get used to taking a moment to say hello it is no problem. I have recommended this to just about everyone I know and will continue to do so.
What's great about it: Price, reliability, voice quality, no AT&T
I would recommend this to a friend!

I have been using it for 3 months and am completely satisfied. Initial installation was easy and flawless - like others I had it up and running in less than 20 minutes. It has been 100% reliable and the voice quality is perfect - no one can tell a difference from our old land line. You get a free trial of their premier service and they even notify you before your trial is up so you have a chance to cancel. (I wish companies would follow their lead.) I have been able to fax from home without an issue and have it plugged into my Time Capsule router without issue.
A couple of caveats to be aware of:
1. There is a $40 fee to port your old number (this is clearly stated on the web site)
2. It also takes 2-3 weeks for the number port to go thorough. Ooma updates you on the process and it was otherwise painless.
What's great about it: Easy to set up, perfect quality, great value
What's not so great: Delay to port number
I would recommend this to a friend!

Cuting the Cell Phone Cord!

I must tell all of you first. I hate phones. My only reason for having one is for Family or my work to contact me. In 1998 I cut the cord and have PAID out the nose for a cell phone. This technology makes it feasble to have a home phone once again. If you can stomach the up front cost of this unit, and buy a years worth of Premium Service. It will start paying you back with HUGE savings. Has soon as my cell phone number is paired. I will be telling them GOOD BYE!!! My Hi speed internet is $32 a month. I will now have my streaming movies, Xbox 360 gaming, and my phone all through my internet connection. I have a great hi speed conection. It's been out only twice in the last four years. I am also a firm believer in my 2nd amendment rights. So if 911 is down for a minute, I should fair well. It's a leap of tech faith I am willing to take. The phone service charges will add up to $3.76 a month for 911 service and some tax BS. This means I will be saving $36.24 a month not paying for a cell phone. In eight months it will have PAID for ITSELF. The rest will be GRAVY for me to spend on something I would rather have. IE: FOOD, GAS, or What ever else I want....?
What's great about it: Call options, Forwarding, Filtering spam calls and much more.
What's not so great: It all depends on your DSL connection quality.
I would recommend this to a friend!

I tried the magic jack and it seemed to work ok on a regular phone, but when I bought a Dect 6.0 phone it wouldn't ring so I decided to try the ooma phone system. I researched online and I found that there are some issues with magic jack working with some phones.
I made the mistake of trying to set it up before activating it, but it was easy enough to correct. You want to activate your phone on the web site before hooking up ooma.
It seems to work perfect. They recommend hooking it between your cable modem and router, but I didn't like it that way. So I have it hooked into one of the out ports on my router and it works fine that way. They say they usually update it on the weekends at night, but twice last weekend I seen everything blinking and updating and it was around noon. So I guess it would have knocked you off the phone if you were on it? I don't know? It only took a couple of minutes. The first time you hook it up, it will take several minutes for the first update.
Best Buy had these $50 off, so I figure in 4 months it will pay for itself. The ooma premier is $9.99 a month and with that you get a second phone line and blocking/forwarding options. I think when the trial of premier runs out, I will buy a year. When you buy a year, they will either transfer you phone number free or send you a free second cordless handset. So for $10 a month, you have 2 lines with all the features. It seems to be the best deal going unless you can use the magic jack. You need your computer on and logged in to use magic jack, but with ooma you don't need a computer. I keep my cable modem on all the time anyway, so I always have my phone with ooma.
I highly recommend it though I have only had it a couple of weeks.
What's great about it: Save money on your phone bills and it pays for itself in 4 months.
What's not so great: Not a lot of phone numbers for my area
I would recommend this to a friend!

Very happy I went with this

Very happy I chose to go with Ooma.
I have FIOS with Verizon and checked out the service quality in advance to make sure it would support voice over internet, which it did with no problem. Setup was very simple; just plugged Ooma in to cable modem and was making calls 5 minutes later. After a week of testing dropped land line and all jacks in house now running off Ooma. Bills for phone+internet now down from $86/mo to $50/mo. Figure will recoup costs in 7-8 months.
Major issue above competitors is that call quality is same or better as landline (exception: if volume up loud on handset, you get an "echo". Turning volume down ends this) and computer does not need to be on to run it.
Only caveats are: not completely set-and-forget, needed minor tweaking to not slow down internet connection (all answered on Ooma's website). There are small tax fees which you still pay (about $3.50/mo). Be aware that there is a $40 fee if you want to port your old phone # over (don't need to decide this right away). Strange dial tone which still takes getting used to. These are all minor and very happy overall with the transition. No one can tell it is a voice-over-internet connection instead of a land line.
What's great about it: Just plain works with high call quality

You can try Ooma for free for a month. I've been using it for almost a month and I've decided to get rid of my "real" landline. Nearly every call is perfectly clear and the few that aren't are no worse than a not so good cell phone call.
My house has Ethernet and phone wiring everywhere so my setup was simple. First I went online to Ooma to register the Telo and get a phone number. I plugged the Telo into my home LAN, behind my router. I setup my "real" landline to forward calls to the Ooma number, disconnected my landline phone line from the house phone wiring and connected the Telo to it. All my phones ring just as before.
People getting my outgoing calls see the Ooma number for the Caller ID. That's not been a problem during my trial but could be have been if I needed to call a credit card company. Now that I've decided to keep the Ooma, I'll have my landline number ported to it.
My internet service is typical. It's faster incoming than outgoing. That means that the person I am talking to is more likely to hear some garbling or experience delays than I am. I've had a few calls, not many, that have been difficult because of that. If I regularly made calls that were important, or if wanted to always make a good impression, I would not switch to VOIP. But, as I said above, it's no worse than a cell phone.
