It has a brush...a cylinder brush that is moderately stiff and effectively sweeps up debris (including stuck on dirt or litter) dropping it into its bin. The brush is like a whisk or hair brush with long bristles. Highly effective.
Sadly, according to the user manual I viewed online for this Bissell product range, the battery is NOT replaceable. I am not aware of any such products in this price range with replaceable batteries. To get this feature, products such as Hoover Linx BH50020 would be your entry-level product. Check it out at the link. I hope this info is useful!

My answer is YES. I use it on carpet all the time. Sweeps up 2 dogs hair like the little champ it is. It's about $40 + 8 for warranty. $50 out the door and no more raking.
I run my E5's (I have two) over a specialty carpet that has rows of three inch fringe handwoven into it. You'd think I'd need a carpet rake what with having 3 cats that love to mess with the fringes...but I don't thanks to the E5s.
If you hold your hand straight with fingers together and just touch the floor with the tallest finger then the sweeper part will just about touch the bottom of the thumb - is about as high as the part that touches the thumb (adult woman).
Company recommends that you do a total 14 hour charge-up before first use and then simply use product until the red light goes on. It gives great service for the about one hour of the charge-up time. It says to wait until red light comes on not to charge up in spurts.
The instructions tell you not to leave it plugged I. Batteries normally have a longer life if you allow the battery to lose charge and then fully charge.
Well it should charge itself The roomba goes back to its station or if it’s completely dead you can always grab it and put it on it’s charging station. It will not break it or anything if it’s charging for days.
