I'm sorry to hear you have sand on the bottom of your washer. The WA400PJHDWR and other high efficiency models use less water than conventional washers, and it's recommended, as you noted, to shake any excess sand or debris from items before placing them in the machine. To ensure the washer is filling with and draining the maximum amount of water, please run the Calibration mode as shown on page 17 of the User Manual. Checking the inlet hose screens is also a good idea, and they can be removed and cleaned by disconnecting the hot and cold water supply hoses (after turning the water supply valves off) on the back of the Washer; the screens are located inside these Washer inlets. Please also check the drain hose to make sure it's installed correctly, per the instructions in the User Manual. Specifically, the standpipe should be between 39" and 96" high, and the connection between the drain hose and the standpipe should not be airtight. If these guidelines are not followed, it could lead to dirty water or sand draining back into the Washer.
If the sand remains in the bottom of the Washer after checking the above, it may be necessary and advisable to remove it manually by wiping the tub periodically with a damp cloth.
