With a family member who's always wanted a Turtle Beach headset (or one by their competitors) for FPS games. this Black Friday price cut was thought to be a good X-mas present, until reading and watching reviews (which I should've done BEFORE purchasing it) made it apparent that this item is not what we wanted, so we returned it unopened. Want to hear the footsteps of those enemies sneaking up to stab or shoot you in the back in Call of Duty? Well, apparently you'll need a $100+ headset for that type of sound setting in the Turtle Beach line or better yet a $200+ gaming headset which is out of our price range. According to reviewers, the mic quality would be an upgrade from either the one bundled w/ PS4 consoles or any generic headset w/ built-in mic (like Skull Candy), but to us that wasn't worth the price tag when so few people use mics on games these days anyways.

The basic premise of the film is fundamentally flawed, being based on a misconception about how the human mind works. Just because humans use x% of their brain doesn't mean utilizing all of it would give us superhuman abilities (see also Limitless, another fun goofy movie). Nonsense aside, Luc Besson generally makes entertaining movies and Scarlett Johansson is insanely charismatic and has proven adept at these sci-fi movies roles (the brilliant slow-burn Under the Skin, the voice of a sentient OS in Her, the much less impressive Ghost in the Shell adaptation, and of course her Black Widow character in the Marvel movies) and she doesn't disappoint here. Cult favorite Korean actor Choi Min-sik (Oldboy, I Saw the Devil, The Quiet Family, Chihwaseon) is another good casting choice. The climax of the film gets increasingly ridiculous, but its still a lot of fun.

Logan isn't like most comic book films and that's a very good thing. Sure it's extremely violent in some of its action scenes which will be off-putting for some, but it tells a different type f story than the genre usually sees on film. It's fascinating seeing him not as the all-powerful Wolverine, but as an old man just struggling to get by after some big events have changed the worlds for mutants and dealing with Xavier's deteriorating and dangerous condition. If you have any interest in comic book movies, this is a must-see. Even if you don't usually care for the genre, it's worth a look. This is one of the best comic book films of the decade and a solid film in general.
Reprising her InchBatman vs. Superman Dawn of JusticeInch role, Gal Gadot stars as DC Comics' superheroine in this exciting solo adventure. During World War I, American pilot and spy Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) crashes on the isolated island of Themyscira, home to Amazon warrior princess-and child of Zeus-Diana (Gadot). Accompanying Trevor back to the world of humans, Diana uses her wondrous powers to help end the conflict, which she believes to be fostered by renegade god Ares. David Thewlis, Connie Nielsen, Robin Wright also star. 141 min. Widescreen; Soundtrack English. Two-disc set.

Patty Jenkins did a lot of things right here (Zack Snyder's Justice League film has been compared to it for contrasting scenes of Amazonians with and without the 'male gaze') and gives girls an inspiring superhero passionately trying to do the right thing. Gal Gadot was a great casting choice (she was the best thing about Snyder's mediocre Batman v Superman DOJ film). The only fault the film has is the one it shares with most comic book films: they all lead to a climactic drawn-out battle between good and evil characters with lots of special effects blah blah blah that retreads the same well worn path for 30min or so. Unfortunately, that's still how this genre works. The rest of the film is one of the best blockbusters of the year (along with LOGAN).

I was a bit skeptical about a live action adaptation of Disney's old animation-live action hybrid, but it's been extensively re-worked here and while the basic story premise isn't the most original (child protecting unusual creature from militarized authorities and would be exploitation profiteers), director David Lowery brings his indie film sensibility and style of impressive cinematography to make this film worth your family's time.

Miyazaki's 2nd 'Studio Ghibli' feature film (though Nausicaa technically predated the studio's existence) was originally known under the title Tenkuu no Shiro LAPUTA, roughly translated to Castle in the Sky Laputa. It's an influential anime (Gainax's Fushigi no Umi no Nadia tv series borrowed the levitation stone and some other bits) and a bonafide classic. Every anime fan should see this film, as should animation fans in general. I haven't yet watched the GKIDS Blu-ray but have read positive reviews. Thhe older release by Buena Vista had issues with problematic 'dubtitles' that have apparently been corrected by the new subtitles used on this release.

Without Miyazaki's environmental sci-fi tale Nausicaa, there would be no Studio Ghibli. This film was released on video under the Ghibli banner though its theatrical release predated the studio's existence. The film's protagonist was at the top of the most popular anime characters in Japanese magazines for many years, proof of this film's longevity.

I liked the original Guardians of the Galaxy film, but didn't love it like a lot of others do. With the basic backstory out of the way, this one has more room to tell us a new story while also filling in more of the main character's mysterious backstory. I look forward to watching the 4K disc eventually when I upgrade my tv someday, but the included Blu-ray disc is great for now.

It's hard to review this film while avoiding a spoiler about the last act of the film, which is where it really shines. The Fault in our Stars, also based on a novel by the same author, was a good movie with a talented lead actress (Shailene Woodley), this is a much better film with a model recently turned actress who has an interesting screen presence in her limited screen time -- if she didn't the film wouldn't work because the protagonist's journey would seem even more absurd (see her also in Luc Besson's visually stunning sci-fi spectacle Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets where she has enough charisma to save DeHaan's less interesting character). The atypical approach to the story is the highlight here and the main reason for my recommendation despite Miss Delevigne's charms.

I don't have a 4K tv or UHD Blu player to watch this on yet, but it comes with the regular Blu-ray and I figured it was worth few extra bucks now instead of double-dipping in a few years. This was one of my favorite films of 2016 when I saw it in the theater. Denis Villenueve (director of SICARIO and INCENDIES) has given us an intelligent slow burn sci-fi film without excessive explosions or idiotic robots battling while looking like a spinning levitating trash heap (I'm looking at you Mr. Bay). If you like smart sci-fi, or are a bit of a language geek who has been waiting for a major film to make a linguist the main character, you should definitely check out ARRIVAL, otherwise you should still check it out for the excellent performance by Amy Adams so you can join the rest of us who think she was robbed of an Oscar nomination (perhaps instead of Meryl Streep getting nominated for an ok comedy). I can't comment on the 4K & HDR quality, but have heard good reviews of it being a noticeable improvement over the 1080p Blu version despite being a 2K mastered film up-scaled to 4K (as unfortunately happens on a number of modern films, probably so they can save time/money -- LA LA LAND was shot on film, reportedly scanned at 5K and had digital intermediate done at 2K and then got bumped up to 4K for theaters and UHD). I would prefer if all 4K releases had DI done in 4K instead of 2K, but if its done well and colors in HDR are done well, it can still be worth a few bucks for the upgrade
