classic Disney + good transfer, overly scrubbed

The Jungle Book is a classic with some great songs ('The Bare Necessities' & ' I Wanna Be Like You'), an other beloved childhood memory for Disney filmgoers...if only they could make it look just like it did in the old days instead of digitally scrubbing the art in ways that changes its appearance from its original theatrical look as is so often the case with recent Disney animated film remasters. It's not a hideous screw-up like Sword in the Stone, but they could've retained more of the natural look of the art instead of trying to make it look so pristine. Most people probably won't have a problem with this transfer, but the videophiles & animation purists will have some issues. Hand-drawn animation and hand-painted cels have more of a textural look to them which has been slightly washed out by the digital tools used to 'fix' things, but if you've bought other recent Blu-rays of classic Disney animation, you basically already know what to expect. If you've liked the look of those other films on Blu, you'll like these too. The set has extensive extras, both old EPK style dvd features and new extras, including their pointless habit of including a modern singer reinterpreting a classic Disney movie song. Overall recommended, I also look forward to seeing Jon Favreau's recently-released, well-reviewed live action Jungle Book adaptation.

puts things right in Star Wars universe

The Force Awakens makes Star Wars great again by bringing back the fun that was sorely lacking from the dull prequels -- which were like watching 2 hours of C-SPAN with a few action scenes tossed in to wake audiences from their potential slumber. Ignore the complaints by some that the new film just recycles from the original trilogy. Yes, it does have a lot of story similarities, but even the prequels rehashed similar events in ways that mirrored parts of episodes 4-6 (look up online essays about the circle theory about 'Ring Composition' in Star Wars films 1-6), only this time they've made the SW universe entertaining again and it makes all the difference in the world. Rey and Finn make a great addition to the cast and Kylo Ren has the potential for an interesting character arc. I'm fairly confident that writer/director Rian Johnson won't let us down in Episode 8. The steelbook itself has a good design with Ren & Phasma on the outside and the Millenium Falcon on the inner art and a debossed title on front..

One of the most enjoyable films of 2013

One thing that can really elevate a film is to have a great ensemble cast. It’s not often that a movie gets Oscar-nominated for all 4 acting awards (Best Actor/Actress & Supporting Actor/Actress). Director David O. Russell’s SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK did it in 2013 and in 2014 his film AMERICAN HUSTLE did it again, so he must be doing something right to pull off such a rare feat. The movie is loosely based on the ABSCAM scandal, but instead of just making a standard thriller, Russell is more interested in fleshing out the interesting characters caught in this desperate situation. ARGO was also based on a true story and won Best Picture the previous year, but I’d argue that AMERICAN HUSTLE is a better movie and is much more conducive to repeated viewings. AMERICAN HUSTLE was a whole lot of fun and is one of the movies from 2013 that I’m most likely to watch again and again.
As a woman who has tried to reinvent herself to conceal her more humble beginnings, Amy Adams would have been a very strong contender for best actress had it not been for Cate Blanchett in BLUE JASMINE, a much less enjoyable film (sadly, Brie Larson was overlooked for her great work in SHORT TERM 12). Christian Bale is great as the charismatic pot-bellied con man and its fun to watch Bradley Cooper’s character struggle when his character is out of his depth, but its wildcard Jennifer Lawrence as Bale’s housewife who really shakes things up and has the potential to derail everyone else’s plans through her careless, clueless actions. It is one’s intentions which matter the most according to her, regardless of the possible consequences fo doing blatantly stupid things. She did a great job here as an unusual type of character and only lost the Oscar because Lupita Nyongo did such an amazing job in 12 YEARS A SLAVE. Jeremy Renner does a good job at a difficult task: playing a politician who’s actually quite likeable and honestly seems to be trying to do something in his constituents’ best interests instead of just trying to increase his own bank account.
Being a new movie, the Blu-ray transfer looks beautiful as expected and professional reviewers have described the picture and sound quality as flawless. The extras include deleted/extended scenes and a making-of segment.
