a rare smart movie about teens

Every so often Hollywood makes a smart film about teenagers (THE SPECTACULAR NOW, THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER, MEAN GIRLS, and on the edgier indie side of things Kenneth 'Manchester BTS' Lonnergan's MARGARET and Barry Jenkins recent Best Picture winner MOONLIGHT). Hailee Steinfeld does an admirable job in a comedy/drama that will hopefully increase her stardom (like the great teen movie EASY A did for Emma Stone). TEo17 is not quite as impressive as the aforementioned films, yet ranks above other good teen films like the mostly entertaining Mae Whitman vehicle THE DUFF. You should also see Hailee in a small part as Mark Ruffalo's daughter in John Carney's underrated pseudo-musical BEGIN AGAIN (and then see his next film, the excellent pseudo-musical teen movie SING STREET).

an underrated darkly comedic gem

Though it wasn't mentioned much during awards season, this dark comedy about a dystopian world where finding a spouse is mandatory and non-compliance is punishable by transmutation into an animal, is one of the best films of the year. Critics don't primarily exist to convince the terminally-clueless to not waste money on awful Transformers movies, their real service to moviegoers is to point out and champion the less-advertised gems that might pass you by otherwise. I was a fan of Yorgos Lanthimos' bizarre Greek film DOGTOOOTH and this film is IMO superior to that acclaimed previous effort. THE LOBSTER should prove particularly amusing to singles whose coupled friends try to set them up with unsuitable partners. Check out the trailer and see if it looks like the sort of film that might appeal to you.

While LA LA LAND was my favorite film of the year, I was going to be okay with MOONLIGHT or MANCHESTER BTS winning Best Picture because they are 3 of the best films of 2016 (Toni Erdmann is another, I have a few more acclaimed ones to watch). I was rooting for LLL on Oscar night, but this little indie film could use the sales/rentals boost. It's a great film and not the type of story that gets made often, much less sees a wide audience, in a blockbuster-dominated market. I'm curious to see what director Barry Jenkins brings us next.

Clara Oswald is my queen

Yes, this tv series takes liberties with historical details, which are better learned through books, but it's a lot of fun. For big fans of Jenna Coleman's days on Doctor Who as Clara Oswald, it's probably required viewing.

Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the most beloved family film of all time! Rodgers & Hammerstein's cinematic treasure stars the incomparable Julie Andrews as Maria, the warmhearted young woman who brings joy and music to Captain von Trapp(Christopher Plummer) and his children. Experience this magnificent movie musical filled with unforgettable songs, including Do-Re-Mi, My Favorite Things and The Sound of Music.

I have memories of this playing on tv every year when I was younger, it's good to see it get a HD upgrade. Buy this classic and. skip the ill-advised modern tv remake from a few years back.

One of the best films of 2015!

On Oscar night I was rooting for either Mad Max: Fury Road or Brooklyn to win the Best Picture category (a few weeks later, I saw Bridge of Spies, another worthy contender; sadly, Todd Haynes brilliant Carol wasn't nominated).
Brooklyn is a simple, universal tale, beautifully told. It's fairly straightforward and maybe a bit old-fashioned -- a story appealing not solely to immigrants, but to anyone who has ever lived in a new place where they felt themselves a bit of an outsider while trying to adapt to new surroundings. It's also a great story about growing up and finding your place in the world, making career decisions and considering marriage possibilities.
The romance portion of the film might be a bit formulaic, but it's also completely charming thanks to the actors involved. Saoirse Ronan does an excellent job winning over the audience in a star-making role which should make her a household name. I wasn't a big fan of hers from Atonement, an excessively-praised, ironically-titled film that I actively disliked. Roles in Neil Jordan's vampire tale Byzantium and Wes Anderson's Grand Budapest Hotel helped to win me over and her endearing portrayal in this film has made me a fan.
The Blu-ray extras include the trailer, deleted scenes, director commentary and about 21 minutes of EPK style interviews with cast and crew. The beautiful film and a solid video/audio transfer are reason enough to pick this up. I highly recommend Brooklyn, a film that you'd probably have to be a grumpy cynic not to love.

visually stunning is an understatement

This is one of the best looking films of 2015, making it absurd that it didn't get an Oscar nomination for Best Art Direction. Some prominent critics loved the film and it was chosen as an overlooked film to be part of Ebertfest, but many others dismissed it as if making a film look this good is an easy thing to accomplish. The Blu-ray extras illustrate great attention to details that most viewers would only notice subconsciously.
The plot itself is pretty straightforward and rather typical of the Gothic Romance subgenre --- the film was improperly marketed as a horror film, which led to some viewer backlash from moviegoers expecting to be scared. Unless you rarely watch films, you'll likely be able to see where the story is going well ahead of time, but that frees up the viewer to divert their attention to the impressive work of the art departments and the film's symbolism and themes.
The only thing keeping this film from appealing to the Jane Eyre, Rebecca, and Wuthering Heights crowd are some graphic scenes of violence. The film will probably be most appreciated by fans of Mario Bava, Hammer horror and Roger Corman's Poe films. It's probably a small miracle that a Hollywood studio funded a film from such a niche genre, and therefore a shame not to embrace it. This will likely develop a cult following on home video. Highly recommended, given the right audience.

rising above an amusing gimmick

How much you enjoy the 2nd BABYMETAL album will depend on what type of fan you are -- did you like them as an amusing gimmick of clashing genres or do you want them to mature into a band that makes very good music that gives them a shot at increased longevity? While their first album was entertaining, the combinations of disparate elements didn't always work (i.e. that groan-inducing rap on "Iine"). The kawaii metal sounds were a bizarre dream pairing appealing to any J-Pop/J-Rock fan who ever wished for a mash-up of The Mad Capsule Markets (whose bassist wrote the music for "Awadama Fever" and "Gimme Chocolate!!") meets Mini-Moni (a Hello! Project idol sub-unit in no way connected to this group -- BABYMETAL has 3 ex-members of girl group Sakura Gakuin). Suzuka's singing voice is maturing and Yui and Moa are occasionally given a bit more to do than just shout and dance. With Metal Resistance, the producers and writers for the band have obviously done their heavy metal homework and chosen to go for a more mature sound and have combined a lot of different styles of metal into one album. Sam Totman & Herman Li of British power metal band Dragonforce collaborated on the track "Road of Resistance". "Meta Taro" has a folk-metal feel, "No Rain, No Rainbow" is a power ballad, "Tales of the Destinies" has it fans and detractors depending on whether the listener likes the Dream Theater-esque twists & turns it takes, and the first single "Karate" (compared by an online reviewer to Korn and Limp Bizkit) is one of my favorites, but I can't say there's a single song on the album that I don't like to some degree. I've already listened to the album several times in its entirety. All things considered, this album gives one hope that BABYMETAL will outlast the flash in the pan gimmick that they were once considered by metal-heads. The US release has the pseudo-instrumental "From Dusk til Dawn" instead of the Japanese release track "Syncopation" and has the English lyrics version of 'The One".

a weak point in 007 history

I know there's a slowly growing segment of Bond fans suggesting that this film deserves a reappraisal, but re-watching the Daniel Craig Bond films in preparation for SPECTRE reminded me just how weak Quantum of Solace is. The suggestion by fans of watching it back-to-back as an extended ending to Casino Royale does help a bit, but the action scenes aren't done particularly well, there's just something a bit off about them (moreso than the weaker action scenes of Brosnan's films) and the story never quite gels. The transfer is good, essentially the same Blu-ray that was released a few years ago. The steelbook cover art picks a decent shot from the opening credits, though not as desirable as some of the other selections in this 9 title steelbook line, but the bland inside art logos (the same as all 8 other titles, differentiated only by title color) are a disappointing shortcut and missed opportunity. Recommend for die hard fans and completists only.

underrated wrap-up to 4 Bond film arc

Skyfall and Casino Royale are not easy acts to follow. The bar has been set very high as those were two of the best 007 films ever made (along with Goldfinger, FRWL, OHMSS, and Goldeneye), leading to some excess criticism of a very good film. It doesn't have the benefit of Roger Deakins' cinematography which made Skyfall quite possibly the best-looking Bond film and it could be argued that Javier Bardem made a better villain that Christophe Waltz, but it does have one of the best opening sequences in the franchise's history, a bravura (digitally-assisted) extended shot in Bond's answer to film noir classic Touch of Evil opening. SPECTRE also justifies repeat viewings since the filmmakers have also thrown in plenty of Easter Eggs for the longtime fans, referencing basically every film in the 50+ year line. Like most modern action films, the transfer of the film is excellent. The steelbook design itself is a bit basic, consisting of essentially just the title logo, which may cause buyers to consider opting for the normal Blu-ray release instead.
