Great vacuum at a great price
on April 20, 2021

In the world of vacuums, there are a lot brands begging for everyone's attention. People have a huge choice of models. The Sharks have been solid machines for as long as I can remember them being on the scene. They offer a reliable machine with the right amount of features and attachments.
The Shark Navigator Lift Away is no exception. You get the same quality designed vacuum they are known for, with features like a HEPA filter, swivel steering, metal tubes, a Lift Away feature that allows you to remove the vacuum from the wheeled base and hard floor/carpeting setting for customized cleaning. All that, and a 5 year warranty on top of it.
You can pay an extreme amount of money for vacuums these days, but Shark has been able to provide a fine machine with great suction and many features found on the most expensive machines, and kept the price at a reasonable level. This particular vacuum is a pretty basic model, but it still comes with some features that make it feel like a more expensive machine. One thing the Sharks do well is allow you to pull the hose (and handle) off, for quick crevice cleaning. It will also allow you to remove the whole wand to reach items up high or down low where you just can't steer the whole machine into. Dust cup emptying is quick and easy and the canister is a nice big size. In addition to the hard floor, carpet switch, there's also a handle switch for Min/Max suction. Helpful for fine tuning how and what you use your vacuum on.
The bottom line for any vacuum is how much suction it produces, and Shark machines have no trouble in this department (which is probably why they include the Min/Max suction switch). The machine is not the lightest I've used, but it's light enough to be maneuverable and a strategically placed handle on the top of the canister allows for easy transport. The beater bar housing has a clear front which allows for easy viewing of the beater bar itself. It's a simple addition that let's you see if the brushes need cleaning. There is no light on the front, which some people may find disappointing (myself included), but this is arguably a small detail for most. Also, the only attachment you'll find is a brush tool. It's basic, but you have what you need for most jobs.
Anyone looking for a machine with suction that rivals the ridiculously expensive machines on the market, should check out the Sharks. Their philosophy seems to be to build a good quality vacuum that can compete with the higher priced ones out there, but do it at a reasonable, sane price. The 5 year warranty should tell you they're very serious about what they do.

Endless ways to use it and it sounds great

Where do I begin? Honestly, there are so many features that this speaker (and the HEOS app) provide that it's a little daunting trying to even start a review.
I own a Marantz preamp/processor that includes the HEOS app and I have loved it since tried it on my main system. And now to find it on a quality standalone, streaming speaker (calling it a Bluetooth speaker just doesn't do it even the smallest justice) is a very welcome addition to my home system.
The speaker itself is a really nice size. Squarish and about 7 ½” tall. It's wrapped with a nice speaker cloth. It looks at home in a variety of locations. The sound is clean and able to fill a good sized room with plenty of volume. I find it offers a pretty flat response, meaning that it doesn't have over driven bass, or annoying tinny highs. It's very well balanced. You can extend the bass and treble through the HEOS app if you choose. As far as connections go, if you can imagine it, it's included. WiFi, Bluetooth, Ethernet connection, 3.5mm stereo audio cable, and even a USB port for playing music directly from a memory device. I don't think they've left anything out.
The top of the speaker is a dark plastic, but when your hand is close to it, the controls illuminate. Very cool. You can use the local controls to play music from saved sources. It has volume controls and transport controls. You can do any of this from the HEOS app, but if you just want to make a quick adjustment or skip tracks, it works very nice.
I've mentioned HEOS quite a bit and it's really the unsung part of what you get when you buy this speaker. HEOS is an app that you can download for free to your phone, tablet, etc.. It's how you interact with all the devices you own that are HEOS enabled. It includes all Denon components, and as I've already indicated, Marantz (and a few others). It is hands down the best “interconnect” app I've ever used, and I've tried a lot of them from the Google Play store as well the Onkyo offering. Many apps claim they are able to take care of all your streaming desires, but they all fall far short of mine. This app just works. That's the biggest and most important point I can make. It's solid, it runs well, it doesn't forget where it is if your phone goes to sleep, it has a huge amount of connection possibilities like streaming apps and NAS ability. And did I say I say it just works! It's never hung up on my, plays smoothly and is just plain intuitive. Everything works like you would want it to. I can't say enough about it. If you're frustrated with other streaming experiences, you have to give this one a try, you won't be disappointed.
I didn't even mention one of the coolest aspects of using a HEOS system. If you have other HEOS enabled devices, you're able to open the HEOS app and select all your individual components to play different music to, at the same time, in different rooms and all from the phone in your hand. If that's not enough, you can also group all your devices together and play the same music to all of them. This is great for listening to music through your entire house or for parties. But wait there's more! You can group your devices any way you want to and play different music to each group! Not impressed yet? You can put two 150's in one room and have them play in stereo mode! The options and possibilities are almost endless. If you can think of a way you want to use HEOS, you can do it.
I can't say enough about the speaker and it's app. I've been sold on HEOS for quite a while so when I heard about the 150 (or 250 and 350) I couldn't wait to try it out, and it is COOL! I'm a very picky customer, and I expect apps to be intuitive, friendly and offer huge numbers of features. And I expect that it shouldn't be hard to have great sound in any room you want and connect them all together in a seamless way. Denon has delivered big time!

Better than expected

I wasn't sure if an air purifier was right for our home, but after using it for a couple of weeks I'm really happy with it. We have a kitchen/family room area that doesn't get a lot of ventilation in the kitchen. As a result we usually have leftover kitchen smells from cooking. This BlueAir purifier works fantastic to minimize and remove all these odors.
This purifier includes a large HEPA filter that filters out smoke, dust particles and airborne particles including bacteria and viruses. It also includes GermShield technology that kills the germs that are caught by the filter. You can run it in manual mode or automatic mode. In manual mode you can set the fan speed and turn it on or off as you need. In auto mode, the purifier constantly monitors the air quality in two different ways. Particulates like dust and dander and gases. The levels of each are displayed on the top front of the control panel. They will change color as the air purity changes to let you know the status of your air quality.
When we cook or clean, the air quality levels change as more dust or cooking smells are put into the air. It will show you in real time the air quality level and ramp up the fan in order to clean the air faster. It will continue to monitor and clean the air at the higher levels until the air quality is once again clean. This was something I was surprised to see and I was amazed at how the process worked. Using this air purifier has greatly improved the air quality in our kitchen family room area and we no longer have the residual cooking smells that we were used to having.
The app that is available to download is very well laid out and gives you all the information right on your phone. It shows the outdoor air quality in your area, and the indoor status of all three particle sizes that are monitored, the total gases, the temperature and the humidity. It also shows the mode that the purifier is in for the GermShield, as well as the filter status as a percentage. The particulate and gas data is shown with a time graph so you can scroll back and see your past air quality.
I didn't think I would be won over by an air purifier, but I am completely sold on this BlueAir machine. The build quality is really good. It has a sleek look and well thought out doors to change out the filter or access the interior. The top of the purifier has a beautiful touch display and the front air quality monitor lights can be dimmed as low as you want if you they are too bright. Very happy with all aspects of this purifier and its many surprise features. It's just one of those very well designed machines that does it's thing in the background without any intervention needed. Can't say enough.

You just can't beat these cameras
on December 10, 2020

I already have four Arlo cameras, but I didn't have the Pro 4 yet.  My experience with Arlo wireless cameras has been very positive.  I've used them for the past six plus years.  They are simple to mount, simple to set up and have many features.
The Pro 4 specifically offers three features my other cameras don't have.  The first one is a zoom/follow feature that will actually zoom in on a subject and track it's movement when triggered.  You can turn this feature on or off in the settings.  My camera is mounted at my front porch and I find that it works really well for objects that are a bit farther away.  For instance, a car going by.  It tracks it well and zooms in on it.  But for anyone walking up to my front porch, it takes just a little too long to find what caused the motion and home in on it.
The second new feature is a built in LED spot light.  The light comes on when the camera is triggered.  It's a bright light and is well suited for areas that are not already lit up.  It offers a fair amount of light and will not only scare away a would be intruder, but lets them know they are being recorded.  If you don't need the light to come on because of where you've placed the camera, you can turn it off under settings.
The third feature is 2K resolution.  You can use either the 2K resolution feature OR the zoom feature.  But it doesn't allow you to use both at the same time.  I chose the 2K resolution for my front porch mounting.  Video is crisp and clear and noticeably better compared to my other Arlo cameras.
It also has two way communication that allows you to talk to someone while you're looking at them on your phone.  A siren that you can either set up to turn on when the camera is triggered, or turn on from your phone if you don't like what you see.
I already have an Arlo base station and it found and connected the Pro 4 very quickly.  You do not need to have a base station to use this camera, it will connect to your WiFi by itself.  However, using it with the base station does give you better control and more options of how to store your video.  I've never had any trouble with any of my cameras losing signal and I have them all over the outside of my house.
If you're not familiar with the Arlo app, I can tell you... it's great.  Very well thought out and intuitive to use.  You can access every setting from it for all your cameras, set up different modes of operation, define a schedule for each camera for when you don't want it to be triggered, set up your notifications, etc., etc..  I use it on my Samsung S10+ and I get notifications on my phone from all my cameras.  I also have a Galaxy Watch, and get notifications on that as well.  A new feature I've noticed with the Pro 4 is that the watch notification will show me a snapshot of what triggered the camera, right on the watch.
Some people in other reviews have complained about poor battery life but I've been using them for years and have the same batteries in them that they came with.  I charge mine about every couple of months.  The Pro 4, may require a bit more charging because of all the features it offers, and that must at some point translate into battery life, but I fully charged this camera 4 or 5 days ago and the battery level is at 98% today.
I love these cameras.  You can't beat the ease of installation and setup combined with the great video quality in both daylight and night conditions.  Having to charge the battery once every couple of months is well worth it to me.  If it bothers you that much, Arlo sells a solar charging panel that you can mount next to your camera and never have to worry about charging it again.  That also lets you put it in a less accessible area for even better coverage, like on your second story.  Can't say enough about these cameras.

Good sound but painful fit
on December 3, 2020
Posted by: enem156
from Chicago, Il
Ear buds like these can be broken down into several parts.  First and foremost is the sound, something that a lot of the ear buds out there fail at.  Second, is the fit, and by fit I mean comfort.  And the third, is everything that's left over.  The features, the noise cancelling aspects, the charging base, etc..
The Yamaha's for me, were a little all over the board.  To start with, the size is nice.  Not too big where you always feel like they're going to catch on something or fall out, and not too small where you have a hard time putting them in, and taking them out.  They connected to my S10 with no trouble at all.  They hold a charge well enough.  The build is solid.  These are all good points.
The sound is really good with nice rich bass and pleasing highs that don't irritate.  They can handle high volume without distorting and offer a good mix at lower levels.  The problem is, you really need to work out which tips and fins to use to not only make them sound good but to do it comfortably.  Unfortunately, this is what I did not like about them.  When you put them in, you really have to look hard for the L & R designations.  It certainly doesn't pop out at you and when you consider how important that is to proper fit, I would think Yamaha would have made this a higher priority.  They do include three sizes of fins and five sizes of tips, which is a good thing.  If you plan to open the box and see a diagram or tutorial of how they should fit, you won't find it.  You need to download the app for that information.  That's frustrating.  I don't feel I should have to download yet another specialized app just to see hot to wear the ear buds.  The only other thing the app buys you is the ability to update the firmware.
I did spend quite a bit of time trying out all the tip and fin combos (literally hours).  I finally got the right combination for good sound and I did really like the sound quality.  You need to get the right fit, to experience good bass response.  What I didn't like was that to get that bass response I had to really crank the buds into my ears.  To the point that after about 15 minutes they were just too painful to deal with.  These are some of the more expensive buds I've used and I think for this kind of money, they should be comfortable AND offer great sound.
As far as the other features.  I experimented with the noise cancelling feature, and I have to say, I could not hear any difference.  To be fair, I've never been a fan of the noise cancelling feature on any ear buds because it always colors the sound in a way I find annoying enough not to use it.  The charging base is large.  Plain and simple.  You will not be sliding it into your pocket.  These days, there is absolutely no reason to have a charging base that's this big.  I really wanted to like them.  Once I got a reasonable fit, the sound was really good.  Unfortunately, at that point they were just plain uncomfortable.

Nice pair of bookshelf speakers
on November 21, 2020
Posted by: enem156
from Chicago, Il
When I first received these speakers, I was skeptical I was going to be satisfied with the sound of them because of the size. They seem to be on the small side but actually a really good bookshelf size. They would also make a good pair of rear home theater speakers.
The design of these speakers is minimalist. Meaning, a plain look. I like the magnetic removable grills and the screw less speaker mounting. Looking further, there is a bass port at the back and one of the included additions is a pair of foam port plugs that allow you to tone down the bass when using them in a bookshelf location. They are also equipped with two pairs of high quality gold plated binding posts. Why two pair? This is something that typically shows up on higher end speakers and allows each speaker channel to be driven separately by removing the shorting bar between the posts and using two speaker outputs for each speaker instead of just one. These are both really great features to add, especially on a pair of bookshelf speakers. My speakers are black and look nice with the grills removed. The mid-woofers are silver colored and look sharp.
I set these speakers on top of my floor standing speakers about eight inches from the wall and didn't need to use the port plugs and drove them with an Onkyo receiver in direct mode (meaning no other speakers were enabled, just the two B&W's). I listen to a wide variety of music, and I've used these speakers for several days now. When I first began listening to them I thought right away, the bass is on the thin side. The overall sound is clean and well balanced between the highs and lows. Music is not colored in any way and the sound you hear is just very dependent on the way it was originally recorded. This is a huge plus. The benefit of this is, you can listen to them for a long time without tiring out your ears. Hearing the music as it was intended to be heard is something high end speaker designers strive for.
The real magic happened as I turned up the volume on them. It's then that the sound started to really shine. The bass became rich and supported the highs very well without becoming muddy or boomy. Sound pressure levels improved as well. The more I've listened to these speakers the less evident my original claim of thin bass became. They do recommend a break in period for the best sound, and that seems to be an accurate claim.
These are well designed, high end speakers and will be fine on speaker stands or bookshelves. They have no trouble delivering clean sound through all the volume levels that I put them through. As expected, the sound pressure levels drop significantly with lower volume, as does the bass, but the clarity remains. This improves with more use throughout the break in period. This is a fine pair of speakers and I look forward to listening to them for a good long time.

Slim, classy and fast

There are a lot of laptops out there to choose from, but I always have good luck with HP. They just build a great machine. This one is beautiful. The slim design along with the pale gold color just screams class. The build quality is solid and one of the things I like best about HP machines. The 2 in 1 design is a great feature and allows you to change things up by using it as a tablet.
The display is fantastic. Colors are rich and vibrant. And even though it's not 4k, the high gloss finish just really makes everything pop. The touch feature works great. It will recognize a light touch which is nice, and means that you don't have to keep poking at it for it to recognize your touch. The touch pad is adequate. It has a nice feel and is very responsive. I've never used a touch pad that left me really impressed, and this one is not much different but, I have no specific complaint about it, it tracks well and has a textured finish that feels good.
These days, 8GB of RAM is on the edge of good, and for the majority of people out there, it certainly is. With the solid state drive and the core i7 processor, this machine flies. I won't be using it for games, so I can't comment on the performance of them, but for everything I've used it for, speed was never even a thought. The backlit keyboard is really nice and very welcome. Every machine should just come with that feature. The large keys are easy to find and have a nice smooth action to them. The whole machine has a really good feel. As a bonus, it also includes a fingerprint reader.
Ports are a bit scarce though. A Thunderbolt port, a couple of USB-A ports and a headphone port. It also has an SD card slot. That's about it though. All in all, a really nice machine. Lightweight and very sleek is how I would describe it. Would be a good machine for probably 90% of people looking for a 13” laptop. Very nice.

Quality, power and variable speed
on October 26, 2020

from Chicago, Il
Every person serious about cooking needs a hand blender (immersion blender). We've had several different ones over the years but this one is the real deal. There are so many great features about this blender to like, it's hard to know where to start.
Lets begin with the motor. Solid and powerful. The start up is very smooth and doesn't blast drinks out of a glass. You can feel the quality in the build as soon as you pick it up. It's got some good weight because of the motor but not so much that it wears you out. The solid body also helps minimize any vibration normally felt in plastic blenders. The variable speed is a really nice touch. I've never seen this feature on a hand blender and it really comes in handy as you go from mixing things in a glass, like a smoothie, to using it in a large pot full of soup and veggies. The grip is very comfortable in your hand and your fingers naturally wrap around to the buttons on the front side.
The stainless steel design makes for easy cleanup and the lower half comes off with a twist to rinse or put in the dishwasher. I especially appreciated the length of this blender. It works very well in deep hot pots and keeps your hand away from the heat. We've wanted a longer immersion blender for a long time and this one has all the features we were looking for. Four blades work much better than the normal two that other blenders use and makes quick work of whatever your mixing. The rubbery end of the blender ensures a quiet operation and doesn't mar your pots. A good quality cord with a nice cord keeper echos the quality of the rest of the appliance. This blender is a real pleasure to use and I can't wait for an excuse to make something else with it. Really nice design and quality build. I look forward to years of use.

Great processor
on October 12, 2020
Posted by: enem156
from Chicago, Il
This is a great way to get two machines in one. If you already have a Vitamix Ascent series of blender, you can add this self contained food processor to it in place of the blender cup. The base accepts this interchangeable optional food processor the same way it accepts the blending cup so there's no added steps to use either one. Just lift one off and put the other in it's place.
This processor is really well designed and has storage in mind. All of the parts store inside the mixing cup. The cutter discs store inside as well and are kept safely in an individual container with a snap on lid. This is a great add on attachment for your Vitamix Ascent blender.
By using the blender base, you have all the power you need for food processing already, and don't need to store yet another entire kitchen appliance. I like the processing discs, they're printed on each side with the type of processing they provide, so it's easy to find the right one at a glance. If you've used food processors before, you probably won't find any exciting new features with this one. It's major strengths are that it works with the Ascent base you already have, and that it stores neatly and securely in it's own mixing cup. I can say that using it was a pleasure, and it shredded and cut whatever I threw at it with no trouble at all and did it very quickly. Clean up is easy as it is with the blender cup. You can use the self clean mode button to give it a quick clean, but you can also put the parts in the dishwasher for thorough cleaning.
The mixing bowl includes both metric and standard scales that are printed in white and very easy to read. All the parts assemble and disassemble very easily and the they all just work very well. If you get tired of buying a stand alone appliance for every task in your kitchen, then you may want to consider getting this processor to minimize storage needs and maximize versitility.

Five program settings (for Smoothies, Hot Soups, Dips & Spreads, Frozen Desserts, and Self-Cleaning) automatically adjust to the container size you~ve selected, process your recipes, and stop the blender when complete. Built-in wireless connectivity will allow Ascent Series blenders to evolve with the latest innovations for years to come.

This machine will make you rethink the word “blender”. It's so much more than a traditional blender it seems a little degrading to put that label on it. But since it comes closest to bringing the functionality of a blender to your counter it's, at the same time, aptly named.
If you look at the price tag on a machine like this, your first reaction is probably going to be similar to mine. It's a lot of money for a blender. But keep in mind, this is no ordinary blender. This is a machine that is engineered for long life and capable of supplying all the power you will ever need for whatever you choose to put in it. For starters, and the most obvious place to start is it's looks. This is a beautiful appliance that you won't mind leaving out on your counter top. The black chrome is very sharp and the brushed accents make it look as high end as it is. The 64oz. Blending cup is big. It's fully graduated with both metric and standard scales. The lid has a full gasket around it for a tight seal that keeps food in. It comes with a quick remove center plug to add items on the fly and even has a nice plastic stirring wand that fits in the center hole and allows you to stir or help push things around inside the cup, but for safety sake, won't come in contact with the blades.
The base itself is the real star of the show. Unique and intuitive controls. There are five blend modes, plus a pulse button and a speed control for more manual operation. The blend modes are pretty amazing and selecting one will put the blender into a programmed run mode that takes all the guesswork out of making a variety of commonly selected items. It works very well and takes the machine through various speed setting and starts a displayed countdown timer that shows how much time is left in the cycle. You can also use it in a more manual mode if you prefer, by rotating the speed control to the desired number in half step increments from “0” to “10”. There is also a pulse button for those times that you want just a small controlled burst of blending power. All of the controls are touch sensitive so there is no mechanical switches to were out (with the exception of the master power switch on the side of the unit). It also makes for a much easier clean up by keeping the control panel flat. The display is very informative and fun to watch. It's not cluttered with information you don't need or want to see and only displays relevant information.
We've made smoothies and soup in it so far, and it performed flawlessly. For both foods we used the blend mode buttons. The soup mode blended up a delicious tomato soup and heated it at the same time so that when the blending was done, the soup was ready to eat. After your done, you can use the “self-clean” mode to easily clean the cup. The cup parts are all dishwasher safe so clean up is a snap. It comes with a beautiful hard backed recipe book full of high quality color photos and all kinds of great recipes. I can't say enough about this blender. If you're looking for quality, ease of use, intuitive controls, and a product that is obviously built to last, look no further, this is it.

Not enough suction
By BHIHIFI
I bought this after reading a positive review in a leading consumer magazine. It comes with an impressive number of accessories but the suction is weak. It would not even vacuum up bits of grass on my doormat. I returned it and bought the portable Dyson instead. Night and day difference.

Wrong vacuum review?

I'm not sure that you're reviewing the vacuum you think you are. This vacuum really doesn't have any accessories...

Does it need to be connect to waterline

No, it's a completely stand alone unit. It uses a water container on the side that you can remove and refill, much like a coffee maker.
