Good, Reliable Dual Charger
on September 11, 2020

I've always liked Belkin products, they are sturdy, well designed, and reliable. The BOOST Charge wall charger is no exception, it is a nice solid package that works as advertised. A bonus for travel packing, the wall plug blades fold flat into the charger, so they don't stick out and get bent or stuck on something. It's also rated for international voltages and Hz, so it can be used worldwide with a simple plug adapter. The included USB-A to USB-c cable is long enough to be useful and looks to be durable.
Charging is fast, not Turbo, but I've never found Turbo to make much of a difference. The BOOST charger does charge two high current devices at the rated current, in my case it was a 2.4 amp phone and power bank. Both charged in the same time they would on single 2.4 amp chargers.
A major consideration for me is Belkin's reputation for quality products. I don't need a charger that is going to overheat, burn out, or fry my devices. I want a charger that I can just throw in with the rest of my luggage and have it just work. The Belkin BOOST Charger was a no brainer choice. Highly recommended!

Excellent Budget RoboVac
on September 8, 2020
Posted by: rtbestbuy
from Bay Area, CA
Our house presents a significant challenge to RoboVacs. We have hardwood, tile, and linoleum flooring with transition strips between them and throw rugs scattered around. Add to that two dogs who shed and just refuse to wipe their feet and the challenge is complete!
We've had several robovacs over the years all across the price spectrum. They can be a significant time saver, but also can be a source of frustration. And they definitely are not perfect. Although they all offer some form of scheduled start, we found that manual start was preferable simply because there are things to be picked up or moved off the floor, like dog toys, bowls, etc. In spite of improvements over the years, they will inevitably find a place to get stuck, either under something or on the edge or fringe of a rug they sucked up. And finally, there are just spots they can't clean that will require manual (human) vacuuming.
That having been said, we're really happy with the Ecovacs Deebot U2. It works with a phone app or Google voice (or Alexa) and can also be started or stopped with a physical button on the U2 itself. The phone app requires registration at Ecovacs, and keep track of your cleaning times and square footage cleaned. You can also schedule cleaning there, if that works for you. It has both optical (infrared) sensors and a bump bar to find it's way.
Physically, the U2 is a typical round robovac, but seems lower than most, at least it got under more furniture than others we've tried without getting stuck. It seems solidly constructed, everything fits together with no rattling or play. When it's cleaning, it's quite quite in normal mode, there is a 'quiet' mode but we've never seen the need for it. The 'max power' mode is only a little noisier, but seems to significantly boost the vacuum.
The U2 is not a mapping robovac; it uses one of three preprogrammed patterns to clean: serpentine, edge, or spot. Serpentine goes back and forth across the floor, avoiding obstacles well. Edge follows the edge of the room, doing a great job of getting the accumulated gunk. Spot spirals out and back in again, we have yet to use it. An optional magnetic strip can be used to provide an additional barrier for the U2.
The mop works really well on our tile floors, and cleaned an amazing amount of gunk. We didn't try it in a room with the throw rugs down, instead mopped under them. But the U2 does sense rugs and it would surprise me if it avoided rugs when the mop plate was attached. And of course the vacuum worked well on both rugs and floors.
The Android app worked well. It was a bit limited, but this may change in the future. All the cleaning options were available in the app. There is a history gives a picture of when and how much square footage was cleaned notification when the PowerBot gets stuck.
Really, the only thing the U2 lacks over units costing 2x-3x as much is the location function, which lets you know where the robovac is and (sometimes) lets you do part of the house one day and part the next (or finish the house after the battery is recharged).
The U2 is probably the best of the robovacs we've tried. It did the most complete job of vacuuming and the mopping function is a definite plus. At the price point, I say that Ecovacs has a absolute winner on their hands. Definitely recommended.

Perfect Record During Power Fails
on August 26, 2020
Posted by: rtbestbuy
from Bay Area, CA
We've pretty much made the switch from desksides to laptops, but still need a wireless router, cable modem, and home automation hub for connectivity. The APC 650VA Battery Backup is the perfect size for protecting them from surges and keeping them running during power fails. It was put to the test during the latest heat wave and fires (located in the Bay Area, California) and performed brilliantly.
APC has made it pretty simple; pull the unit out of the box, plug it in, and plug in the devices you want to protect. There are five backup outlets and two surge protected outlets, clearly marked. There is also a USB connector that can be used to recharge phones & other usb devices with 2.1amps. The outlets are inline, which is my one minor complaint; it would be really nice if they were staggered on either side of the unit. But there is extra space between the third, fourth, and fifth outlets, so wall warts fit without taking up two outlets. One note: read the (excellent) manual provided with the unit. The on/off switch is used to program a variety of modes and to silence the (annoying) beep signaling that the unit is on battery power.
First test, after an overnight charge, was to simply unplug the unit. The router, cable modem, and Arlo hub all just trudged along like nothing happened, and a short press of the power button silenced the alarm. Second test came a day later when the neighborhood blacked out because a transformer blew due to the load. We were shut down for almost four hours while they fixed the problem. The APC kept the cable modem and router up and running, we were able to stay connected the entire time. Third test came a couple days later when the power company decided to do some unplanned maintenance to correct the problem they patched around earlier. Again, local power went out but we were able to use laptops to access the Internet seamlessly.
While the APC won't keep things running for days, it is a great solution for rolling blackouts and short term power disruptions. The addition of a charging port is a great feature as well. This is a no brainer, especially in these times of work at home. Highly recommended!

Mostly Really Great

After using the wired GPro X gaming headset for the last year, I was pretty excited to try the new Logitech GPro X Wireless gaming headset. Logitech had essentially just replaced the wired connection with a high speed proprietary wireless one, keeping in place the 7.1 surround sound and all the audio controls. After trying them side by side, the same great listening quality and crystal clear mic with no discernible lag has transitioned nicely.
The GPRo X Wireless come with both leatherette and velour earpads, and while I prefer the leatherette it's really nice to have the option. They also come with a carrying case, detachable mic, and usb-c charging cable. They charge quickly (and after leaving them on overnight, I can say the battery lasts a long time). After charging, attach and position the mic, plug in the wireless dongle and go. Take the time to download the Logi GHub app, it really offers tremendous control over the characteristics of the headset. They are very comfortable, wearing them for a couple of hours wasn't an issue. Surprisingly, adding a long life battery doesn't seem to have affected the weight much, which was a pleasant surprise.
Sound quality is excellent. While the default sound is stereo, switch to surround sound with the GHub app. The directional sound is really incredible. You can actually use that to detect direction, particularly useful when someone is running up behind you. You can hear them and the direction from which they are coming! Streaming videos with DTS surround sound also maintain the illusion of directional positioning really well. One really nice feature is that the headset controls are well differentiated; none of this nonsense with identical buttons and rocker switches. The power button is a slide switch, the mute button is a press button, and the volume is a rotary. Yay!
The 'Blue Voice' technology behind the microphone translated to wireless well. It does a very good job of providing clear and very distinct voice quality while suppressing background noise.
There are a couple of issues that make the GPro X Wireless Headset less than perfect. There is no wired option, either audio cable or USB; it would have been really nice to have some sort of wired option as a backup, or for use on a non-Windows computer. The wireless is a proprietary protocol and it isn't clear how the dongle binds to the headset. I don't know how it will do when multiple headsets are in range. There is no connection setup as with Bluetooth. It would have been nice to be able to use Bluetooth wireless as a backup wireless protocol as well. Finally, and this is a minor nit, the dongle sticks out from the usb connector about two inches, and I've already managed to send it flying once; it would have been really nice if it was smaller.
In conclusion, despite the nits, this is an excellent gaming headset and it's really nice not to have that cable flopping around in game. Comfortable enough for a long gaming session and versatile enough to use as a general listening headset. Highly recommended!

Absolute Gem in the Rough

The Dell G5-15SE epitomizes the ugly duckling fable. It's a bit on the chunky side, with a chassis design that is a bit dated, but once you start using it --- Wow! Dell put all the right pieces together to come up with a blistering fast gaming computer at a bargain price.
As I said, the chassis is unexceptional, sturdy and solid. Under the hood, the AMD Ryzen R7-4800H offers a significant performance boost over the equivalent Intel I7. The AMD Radeon 5600M graphics card I would put in a class with the Nvidia 2060, for comparison. The display is bright, sharp, and runs up to 144Hz and the keyboard is a full size keyboard that I found to be quite adequate. The G5-15SE also comes with a 512GB internal SSD, which is more spacious than the 256GB SSD's usually found in this class of laptop. Important notes: the memory can be upgraded with standard dimms, and there is an additional m.2/pcie slot for a second internal drive, so the internal storage can be upgraded without having to duplicate and swap drives. The assortment of ports is generous, including a mini DisplayPort and an gigabit Ethernet port. The Killer Wifi is fast enough to keep up with any of the games I tried.
Performance was stellar! I will say that the AMD drivers were updated a couple of times during the week I've been had the laptop, and seemed to improve performance a bit each time while reducing the temperature (more on this later). With each update, I reran the benchmarks and watched the performance tick upwards. Good to know that there is still active development going on. While the unit is a bit on the heavy side, it seems to because of the battery capacity. The battery life in good old, go to work mode is seven to eight hours, running web apps and office, which is WAY above the usual gaming laptop standard of two or three hours.
For gaming, you probably want it plugged in, as the battery life drops dramatically to maybe a couple of hours. There is a game shift button that locks in high performance mode and turns the dual fans on high. At first, the unit got really hot after a while, actually making the keyboard uncomfortable. The later drivers seem to have tamed that without impacting performance somehow. Fortnite ran at around 80-85 frames per second, Doom Eternal ran at 40-45 FPS without stuttering. Cycling simulators (Zwift, Rouvy) using the DP port to a large external monitor were great, although the 15 inch built in screen was also fine with the G5 on a stand.
Additionally, I did some video rendering (transcoding some videos from a GoPro) which completed in nearly half the time my I7 desktop takes. Video operations were really fast and the bright, sharp screen made it easy to edit. I have a new video editing station!
The Dell G5-15SE is not without it's warts. The fans get pretty noisy in game mode, although it 'normal' mode they are very quiet. The power brick is a 240 watt unit that is huge and heavy by laptop standards. None of this should take away from the fact that Dell has put all the pieces in place for a high performance gaming laptop at a price a couple of hundred dollars less than any equivalent performer. You could spend more money for far less performance. For gamers or video enthusiasts, I highly recommend the Dell G5-15SE.

Clever and Useful HDMI Adapter
on July 16, 2020
Posted by: rtbestbuy
from Bay Area, CA
With the shift to ever slimmer laptops and phones, the number and types of ports available is shrinking to only USB-C, micro-USB, and USB 3.0 ports. This means connecting a laptop, chromebook, or phone to a presentation projector, external monitor, or even a tv requires an external adapter. The Belkin USB-C to HDMI(4K) Adapter definitely fit the bill.
I wanted just a HDMI adapter to cut down on bulk over a full docking station. The Belkin USB-C to HDMI is tiny so it fits in a sleeve with the laptop and appears to be very well made. With so many of these devices using a USB-C port for charging, it means dedicating two ports, one for power and one for video. The laptop/phone charger can be plugged in to the Belkin adapter so that a single port can be used for both AC charging and video output. The video quality is excellent, both at 1080p and 2160p (4K). Even light gaming with high motion (Zwift and World of Warcraft, for reference) work well at 4k(60hz) resolution.
When I got this, I didn't really think much of the power port idea, I was looking for a small 4K HDMI adapter that was well constructed and with excellent video. Now being able to use a single port has been a lifesaver more than once. For reference, this has worked extremely well with a HP Spectre laptop, Dell Laptop, HP Chromebook, and a Samsung phone.
This is a no brainer. Highly recommended!

Real Advance in Shaving
on June 22, 2020
Posted by: rtbestbuy
from Bay Area, CA
Ok, I admit it, I'm really surprised at how well the Panasonic Arc 5 shaves. I wanted a shaver that was completely shower safe and washable, not just partially rinse-able and the Panasonics are really the best at that. I figured I would give it a weeks worth of shaving to try it out. The Arc 5 is great, way better than my old rotary. Even the first shave was very smooth with no straggling whiskers or feeling like I had to go back over an area. I found myself spending less time shaving than usual because I didn't have to feel for the rough spots that needed more attention. It's actually gotten better after a week. The entire week, I never felt like I needed to shave again to go out in the evening. I'm sold!
When you open the box, the first thing you notice is the huge, 5 element foil head. I was worried about beard edges and tight places, but it works fine; really surprising. There was no real problem shaving in tight places. It also comes with a proprietary world voltage (100-240v) charger, brush, oil, and case.
Charging was quick, 20% to 100% in about 40min. The graphical display tells you the charge in 20% increments. After the first week of shaving, the Arc 5 is down to 60%, so two weeks on a charge is easily achievable.
The head is hinged so that it will rock side to side and kinda roll forward and backward. It allows the head to follow the contours of your faces or neck easily. If you prefer you can lock the head in place and control the angle with the handle. And there is a small, popup trimmer which is actually useful because it isn't too large. It's also mercifully quiet for a razor. Cleaning consists of squirting some handsoap into the head and rinsing it clean, very easy.
The Panasonic Arc 5 shaver is an excellent razor which provides a close, clean shave quietly and quickly. I highly recommend it. I'm sure you will find it a superior shaver.

Excellent Sound, Great Portable Speaker!
on June 16, 2020
Posted by: rtbestbuy
from Bay Area, CA
The Sony SRS-XB33 Bluetooth Speaker is everything you want in a portable speaker, superb sound, easy setup, heftable package, and reasonable controls. It's a little larger than it's predecessor, the XB32, but seems to be much more durable and still very heftable. The sound quality is excellent, especially with 'Live Mode' enabled. Volume is more than enough for a room or backyard, with good clear highs and deep base, enough to boom but without muddying up the sound.
Over the last couple of days I've used this with a phone for music, laptop for better movie sound, and a game system. It performed admirably in all cases. There were no problems with pairing or dropping, and there were voice prompts during the process. The Sony Music Center app adds some additional controls over volume, tone, treble, and bass in addition to all the preset controls available by buttons. It does appear that the speaker is capable of multiple connections, in that I was able to use the phone app controls while the speaker was connected to a game computer. Very cool Sony!
The lighting can fortunately be disabled, but it does make for some cool effects in the evening out in the yard. I have about 12 hours of total playing time on the speaker and the battery is showing about half depleted, so I'm going to assume that the 24 hr battery life is spot on. There is a button in the power panel that provides a voiced battery level. I did not test the waterproof-ness of the speaker, but it's claimed to be washable, which may be necessary after a few outdoor trips.
The one thing I was not able to do was to get the XB33 to either go into either Stereo Connect or Party Connect with the XB32 speaker, but that really wasn't a big deal for me. It may be either a new mode or something that will be enabled in the future.
Overall the XB33 is an excellent portable speaker, great sound, build quality, and features. Pricing is quite reasonable, making it an excellent value and highly recommended.

Great Sound, Features, and a Few Quirks
on April 20, 2020
Posted by: rtbestbuy
from Bay Area, CA
The Sennheiser Momemtum TW 2's provide excellent sound, good fit, long battery life, and a nice range of functionality. There are a couple of minor quirks that make them less than perfect, but more on that later. I'm writing this after using them for an hour and a half on a bike trainer where they performed admirably and I definitely proved them to be sweatproof!
The sound quality is absolutely stellar, rivaling over the ear headphones. Using the flat setting on the equalizer, I listened to a variety of music (rock, classical, jazz) and some video tracks. The bass was present and clear without being thumpy or muddy, kind of the bane of earbuds. The sonic clarity is excellent, midrange and treble are clean anc crisp. I could pick out individual instruments in all kinds of music, they never ran together. Sennheiser also seems to have solved the 'sync' problem common in wireless earbuds, where one earpiece seems slightly behind the other; I couldn't detect any trace of it.
Setup was easy, but definitely do it in the order Sennheiser describes, pair first with your phone or other device, then connect to the app. I installed the app (Android, btw) and connected the TW2's to it before pairing with my phone. That seems to have caused problems with the bluetooth profile on the phone, preventing it from recognizing an audio playback device. Fortunately, 'forgetting' the TW2's in the app and starting over in the recommended order fixed everything. NOTE: The app works on ChromeOS as well as an Android device, which makes it very convenient.
Battery life seems to be pretty close to the specified 7 hrs - I was able to get through the day, including a workout session, a movie, and some chat time without a problem. The case has recharged the earbuds twice now without being plugged in, so I don't doubt the claimed four charges. I did try the 'short charge' (10 min charge for 1.5 hrs play time) and it seems to work.
Spend the time to try out the included array of earpads; the seal makes a big difference both in comfort and sound quality. Seating the earbuds is easy, you kind of give them a quarter turn twisting them into your ears. They seem to fit securely through walking and cycling and didn't seem to pop out like some others have. The touch controls, once you get used to them, work really well, much better than physical buttons. Not having to fumble around for some tiny little button, especially during a workout, is a real boon. The large touch surface is easy to use and the functions are user configurable.
The app is pretty good and provides a plethora of configuration options. It uses a relatively new bluetooth innovation to remain connected even while the earbuds are connected to another device. Which brings me to the annoying quirks and one serious missing feature of the TW2's. The equalizer is a bit funky to use and can only be adjusted and stored in the app, although the current settings are stored in the earbuds. There is no way to switch equalizer settings (eg., rock to jazz) on the earbuds.
The one missing feature, which will hopefully be added in an update, is to support switching between multiple connections on the earbud. Bluetooth now allows audio devices to keep multiple connections alive and switch between them. The TW2's support this and can be connected to, for example, a laptop and a phone at the same time. But the only way to 'switch' between the connections (say, to answer the phone) is to bring up the app and switch in the app! Sennheiser, please make one of the 'soft control' options the ability to rotate through connections!
In spite of the one deficiency, I'm really happy with the TW2's and highly recommend them to anyone looking for headphone quality sound in a earbud package.

Best Tax Program This Year
on February 14, 2020
Posted by: rtbestbuy
from Bay Area, CA
I have been using H&R Block as a secondary tax program for years, primarily to check the result of either a professional tax preparer or another well-known tax program as I transitioned to doing my own taxes. This year, for the first time, H&R Block became my primary tax prep program. They have redesigned and streamlined the user interface. It has the cleanest, most intuitive user interface by far. There are very few repetitive questions, you don't have to re-enter data or spend time confirming entries. Help and advice are easy to access and contextually relevant. The organization and program layout makes it easy to switch between guided and user selected entries easily. Using Premier, I have yet to run into a case where I'm asked to upgrade to the next level for additional features.
Last year we had employment(W2), self-employment, and investment income, some of which is fairly complex. H&R Block dealt with all of it smoothly and without any hiccups. Although we haven't received all of our investment 1099's yet, I track investment income and expenses carefully during the year. I fill out 1099's manually with the tracked values, then enter the real values as the actual 1099's are received. The manual entry is easy and matches the boxes perfectly. I get a number of different types of 1099's and so far there has been no problem entering any of them. The online retrieval for INT and DIV 1099's has worked well for the limited number that have been available to me so far.
Let's face it, no one likes doing taxes. This year's H&R Block tax software makes preparing the forms about as painless as possible. Overall, the new user interface, automated entry, online retrieval, and contextual help make H&R Block the clear winner for tax prep this year.

The laptop is a bit over 4lbs and about 3/4" thick. Battery life if you're not gaming, or if you dial back the game settings is pretty stellar - about 10 hours for just general office type operation. The power supply is a bit of a brick, but not as heavy as other gaming laptop power supplies. I would guess about a pound.

Can i use hdmi to connect an external monitor with this laptop without losing performance?

Sort of. HDMI is somewhat bandwidth limited, so the refresh rate will be lower than the laptop refresh rate. Better to use the USB-c DP functionality to get a higher refresh rate on an external monitor.

Does the backlighting on the keyboard actually shine through the letters or just around the key?

It shines around the keys and through the script on the top of the keys. So for example on the "A" key illuminates the "A" and around the key as well.

I have a camera system and need to be able to have 2.4 & 5g separated for cameras. Can you turn off band steering?

yes, it's currently a 'Discover' feature and is off by default. If you mean can you define separate SSID's for the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz networks, then no.

Does the UBD-M9700/ZA support the following: DTS-X, Dolby Atmos, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and/or HDR10?

DTS-HD, Atmos, HDR10+, and HDR10. It doesn't support Dolby Vision. Don't know about DTS-X as that may be a bitstream passthrough.
