Solid remake even if not as good as original

Surprised a little in that I enjoyed this remake. The "scares" might escalate too quickly after movies like The Conjuring and the like, but it is still solid. Some of the effects are too hokey (the tree, that's never going to look right). Rockwell and DeWitt bring at least better than average performances. I think for a lot of people, the enjoyment of the movie will come down to how much they buy Kyle Catlett's performance. Luckily for myself, I did buy it. Basically the main character, the young actor gives a very solid performance, and most importantly, doesn't capsize the movie, which could have easily happened.

Best movie of 2015 for me

My pick so far for the best movie of 2015 that I've seen. Just an amazing experience. Inarritu's best movie since Amores Perros. His movies have all been sort of a drag since then, but The Revenant never becomes repressively bleak like some of his other movies. Dicaprio gives perhaps his best performance here, with little dialogue and truthfully not a very deeply written character, but it doesn't matter, I was all in with him throughout the movie. The Revenant really is an experience, and that's something you can usually only hope for with most movies. Beautifully shot (wouldn't mind at all Lubezki winning Cinematography for a 3rd straight time), with some "best scenes of 2015" quality moments (the opening, the bear scene, at least one or two others). Tom Hardy is also really good. An intensely moving film.
In terms of Oscars, Inarritu is doing it all backwards, you're supposed to lose BP and director with your best film (The Revenant), and then the Academy gives the award to you for a lesser work (Birdman).

Good comic book movie

A pretty fun experience. It's very funny, even with perhaps 50% of the jokes falling flat, but there's so many of them they just keep going when one lands like a thud. Ryan Reynolds is pretty good here, as is Morena Baccarin. It's kind of weird there's a comic relief sidekick character in this movie when Deadpool is the chief comic, but T.J. Miller works decently. The actual plot/villain is actually pretty terrible, but it doesn't hurt the movie too much because it's not really its focus. I've seen and heard some gushing reviews for this movie, and while I don't agree with the ones that are saying Deadpool is a redefining comic book movie, it still works well and is a fun time.
