Before the unit came out and based off of all of the pre-release reviews, I believed that this was a useless release but boy was I wrong! The bigger, more vibrant and amazing blacks oled scene makes the switch in handheld lode a completely different experience. Do yourself a favor and get the switch oled. You won't regret it.

Led tvs have come a long way

I'm coming from a first Gen LG oled and this was an upgrade in many ways. From brightness, sdr content looked great, web os was fast with plenty of options.... The only 2 drawbacks for me was the lack of 3d & the fact that the TV crushed black levels.
For example, in a game like resident evil 6, it's dark but there are details in that darkness... There were no details here. Just blotchy black areas.... And that is ultimately what led me to returning the TV. Dark content just didn't look detailed. But outside of that, I thought this TV looked better in almost every aspect over the Cx oled I replaced it with which also was returned for making sdr content look awful.

I'm coming from the first Gen oled which had about 450 nits at peak brightness and I loved it. Upgrading to the cx, I felt like it was going to be the perfect upgrade all the way around but.... It isn't.
Let me explain, the peak brightness on this one is about 600 and its TOO BRIGHT. It may just be my eyes but where my ef9500 oled made EVERYTHING but hdr footage look amazing. New and old movies alike, the cx makes old movies look old, and non hdr footage look OK. Hdr footage looks amazing as it should but that's it.
My other gripe is there is no 3d. While I understand that there hasn't been a 3d TV since 2016, some of the biggest movies of this year have been released on 3d blu ray, all of the 4k bluray players had 3d capabilities but tvs aren't 3d anymore? Just is odd.
Gaming in the TV looks great. It shines in that aspect. Just know, if you watch a lot of older content, this oled may be too bright. Go for the c1, which I've heard does a much better job at sdr content.

Exactly what I needed

Great upgrade from the ac5400 router I was using previously. Not 5g band drop outs either like the previous linksys router. I did lose out on 4 Ethernet ports but this thing handles 20 plus wifi items with ease.
This is a winner for years to come.

I've been a dedicated Roku user since that were just the software for the net gear streaming box... And after nearly a decade, the interface just feels bland. Plus there's a host of issues like constantly signing you out of apps while this chrome cast with its remote and interface feels like a breath of fresh air. Everything is just smooth and quick. This is a nice TV. I am upgrading from an older 6 series (R615) with the Roku OS. I use mine with an Apple TV and Xbox primarily. Overall am pretty satisfied with the picture and has noticeably better contrast management from my older 6 series.
However, there is one UI fail that I can’t seem to get past that may ultimately annoy me enough to return it: the CEC function does not work properly: (1) TV will only intermittently turn on when my ATV turns on and (2) TV will not turn off when I turn the ATV off. What you get is a disclaimer on the screen that there is no signal so you have to reach for the TV remote to turn the TV off.
This may seem like a minor annoyance and it’s certainly a first world problem. However, this is functionality that is expected to just work with today’s convergence of media equipment and indeed my older TCL 6 series and my not that old 5 series both have the same setups and work just fine where the CEC works properly so I can just use the ATV remote to operate all functions.
I did some superficial research and it seems to be an issue with the R646 sets with the Google TV operating system. And the most recent Reddit thread that I read (from October 2021) leads me to the conclusion that TCL has not addressed it and in fact TCL responses posted by other owners can be summarized as: “that’s how it is designed to work.”
So, in the end, it’s a nice TV, but if you use any other device and expect that CEC functionality to work, it won’t right now (and I have no idea if TCL will ever fix the issue). But if you plan to just use the TV itself, this is a non-issue for you.

Same CEC issue

I'm having the same CEC issue. It's not controlling my soundbar volume but raising the tvs volume when using the remote. Also it isn't controlling anything connected to it outside of turning it on. But doesn't turn it off. I'm hoping this will be addressed with a future software issue along with the lag in the smart features.

So there was something about this TV on the end cap that grabbed my attention. The aesthetic of how thick it was and the fact that it's the only mini LED TV on display at Best Buy where you can't see blooming from the backlight. Now with all that being said I'm coming from a 2015 LG OLED so I'm used to the best picture but I did want to go bigger and felt confident that TCL has come a long way. And my God turning this TV on, I was shocked at how close to OLED black this TV gets. The color is incredible, HDR looks great, and the brights are so bright that the maximum that I can put this TV on is maybe 34. I'm a big fan of Google TV and the picture options on this are really great but there is a reason I gave it 4 stars.
That reason being the software itself is very buggy, there needs to be some software updates because there are several options in the menu that just simply don't work. Such as CEC HDMI control. The moment I plugged my HDMI sound bar into the arc Port which my $1,000 Sony HT nt5 Soundbar supports, the TV's sound came out through my soundbar but with CEC enabled on the soundbar, when you raise the volume you're only raising the TV's volume and not the Soundbar itself. It's also not controlling or moving anything on my Xbox PS3 or Blu-ray player, again CEC is enabled on all of these. The other part of the software that is surprising is if you're playing HDR or Dolby Vision video and try to press the settings button, it just lags and everything freezes and it takes forever. This is odd because the settings for the television should be completely separate from the Google interface that you're streaming from, but it almost feels like it's all one and that's not good. Now, I may be using an external Source such as my Xbox for media content but I really shouldn't have to, so hopefully future updates take care of this lag and CEC issue. On another note, hbo max WILL NOT play any Dolby Vision content, it completely freezes. Also if your watching TV & use the built in guide, there are options to use green & yellow buttons, which ARE NOT present on the remote itself.
I do see that some people have gotten bad panels here and believe me, that's a thing with every single brand but I got lucky getting this open box and having a completely white screen, no clouding issues and perfect blacks... as perfect as they're going to get on an LED. If you're curious about the capabilities of mini led, this is the TV to get.

Well, Today, There is no sound coming from any input on the tv, whether it be antenna, xbox, bluray or my switch but there is sound coming from the native apps... seriously what is going on with the firmware here? Such an amazing picture and build, let down by awful software implementation.

Picture is PHENOMINAL, however - it is slightly buggy - even after the system being updated. Occasionally the TV will just shut off and cannot be turned on unless we unplug the TV, count to 60, and plug in again.
I'm sure this will be fixed in a future software update, but it's slightly annoying.

So I'm not the only one going through that. Good to know. There is nothing else in the size and price segment that even touches this tvs picture quality. But it is still buggy, something new that is happening with me, now is I have to unplug all hdmi's but the soundbar and restart the TV for it to recognize that the sound bar is connected.
