The RT-BE96U~s dual 10 Gbps ports make it a great choice for servers or NAS devices. These are more convenient than simply combining multiple gigabit Ethernet ports, and they help increase your available bandwidth to avoid data bottlenecks throughout your whole network. Users are also empowered to leverage multiple high-speed internet service providers.

Incredible product but meh price and growing pains
on February 6, 2024
Posted by: BRogers
Verified Purchase:Yes
I love this thing. I bought it to replace my CAX80's failing Wifi Radio and it did so perfectly. Not only did it replace that, it also replaced my Raspberry Pi and PiVPN along with it. Built in adblock/dns selection, and VPN tunnels (all standards both in and out) has made this _THE_ router to beat.
Now, there have definitely been issues. New ASUS products typically have growing pains and this device is no exception. That being said, they're fairly quick with the firmware updates to fix said issues.
Right now the most notable issue is with the smart-connect configuration and the 5G bands not working quite right.

Hasn't had updates in long time. Buggy.

At first this thing was pretty great, but as of now I'm sitting on a barely functional product only 2 years later. The 5Ghz radio was the first to go, and now the daily bugs mean that I'll be looking to purchase a new modem, and I'll make sure it will NEVER AGAIN be a NETGEAR.

Tinkerers dream but a Normie Nightmare.
on December 29, 2023
Posted by: BRogers
Verified Purchase:Yes
I really really really like my Lenovo Legion Go! But I'm also not a typical user. I've already installed Linux on this device and unlocked more power in doing so. This device is excellent for anyone with patience or who loves to tinker. However, the default experience isn't the best and the first few hours with the device are better spent with a mouse and keyboard - even on windows.
At a high level -
Good:
- Screen is wonderful from a refresh rate and color perspective, but I think the lack of an OLED panel is a mistake.
- Performance is outstanding, likely the best of the 2023 handhelds.
- Versatility - Again, likely the best of 2023 with a seamless FPS mode and a robust set of features.
- Linux compatibility - Plug-and-play with Nobara, Bassite, and ChimeraOS linux distributions with only minor caveats and usually superior performance in every way.
- USB4 - Having not one, but TWO full speed (40 Gbps) USB4 ports means this thing can already make use of external GPUs, thunderbolt docks, and other high performance peripherals.
Meh:
- Battery life is kinda meh. You can get a notable upgrade in battery life by switching to linux, but the display still likely consumes more power than the competing devices. It's not BAD if you know what you're doing and optimize games for 15 watts TDP or less, but still not as good as other devices.
- Storage - I have the 1TB model, and I wish I had double the space with modern games reaching 200GB. The SD card slot helps a bit with older/smaller games, but provide a notable impact to load times on games over 40GB in size. USB4 is a far more effective way
Bad:
- Lenovo's software coupled with Windows is a terrible experience. Since this device has 16GB of memory shared between the CPU and the GPU, you'll often experience issues configuring the GPU with more than 4GB of RAM (leaving 12GB for the cpu) since Windows, on a clean boot, will take up 4-5GB of Ram without loading legion-space or the other tools. Add to this every launcher you'll need and maybe a web browser tab or two, and you run out of RAM fast. This problem is almost entirely a non-issue when running Linux where the RAM usage running Steam Big Picture is less than 2GB - meaning you can go up to an 8GB allocation for the RAM and unlock a TON of performance.
- Lack of RAM - as stated above sharing 16GB of ram is tough. That's why modders are already offering upgrades to 32GB (which further unlock 10% MORE performance). In Linux, ZRAM helps make it hurt less.

Hardware Great! Elgato Software, not so much...
on July 8, 2023
Posted by: BRogers
Verified Purchase:Yes
I have updated this device's firmware to the latest version as of writing. It performs well and any passthrough latency is imperceptible. The Gsync and VRR support is fantastic and works well. HDR recording is a sight to behold as well!
The only problem is the software. The Elgato 4k Capture Utility works great for operating the device but falls flat on mirroring the sound. It's garbled, drops frequently, and is generally annoying to listen to.
Using VLC or OBS to open this capture device instead works much better in that regard. This suggests that the firmware is fine and that the Elgato Software is to blame for the audio issues in their app.
All in all, I still would recommend this device due to the great hardware and excellent 3rd party support that makes the buggy Elgato software much more tolerable.

MicroSD Corruption causes reboot loop until format
on June 30, 2023
Posted by: BRogers
Verified Purchase:Yes
I earnestly don't think there is a single manufacturer of dash cams that actually stand by their product anymore.
This unit in particular tends to corrupt about 1 MicroSD card a month, and once that happens it will go into a reboot loop until this MicroSD card is replaced.
I've done the firmware update, no dice, I'm on the latest firmware. Yet this issue occurs monthly and in doing so requires me to purchase a new MicroSD card each time.
Also, I really don't want a response from Rexing to my review. I mean, they say "Use VLC" when a user posts them doing just that and their video recording not working. The person doing the responding here is either incompetent, or a bot with zero understanding of the context a user provides.
So yeah, don't buy Rexing, they are a piece of crap company just like the rest of them. Though I'm not sure what to buy instead seeing as Cobra and Nextbase are also crap...

An excellent HDR 4K conversion of a classic film.

Gattaca was made using Super 35 mm film. So the 4K treatment here isn't as stunning as something that was recorded digitally or on 70 mm film. However, what they've done here is excellent and retains all the characteristics of film, boosting the contrast and colors, as well as being faithful to the director's vision.

When it works, it's fine. The image is good, the night visibility is good, the speedometer and gps features all seems to work fine.
However, that's the exception, not the norm.
This unit will randomly power off and will need to be unplugged and plugged back in before it will operate. Additionally, it isn't capable of loop recording as advertised. It will run out of space and require formatting before functioning again.
I can't trust this unit will function appropriately when I desperately need it.
All, in all, do NOT buy this piece of garbage.

I HATE THIS INFERNAL THING.

This thing gets clogged all the time and wastes beans more than a french-press.
This particular pressurized porta-filter design is just terrible. The single tiny outlet hole gets clogged on 1/3 pulls and I just hate using it.
Literally, this machine has made mornings worse for me and I'm searching for a replacement.
My old Starbucks unit also used a pressurized porta-filter, but it never clogged like this, no matter how fine the grind or how compressed the puck.

Mobo spontaneously combusted at idle - 6 months in
By BRogers
I've had the unit about 6 months now. Seemed to be working great until yesterday.
Laptop was left idle with Discord running in the background. We then heard a loud "pop" and smelt this awful burning smell. Once we figured out it was the laptop we unplugged and made sure it wasn't smoldering.
Currently trying to start an RMA and there is extreme skepticism every step of the way. They seem to think we've damaged our laptop somehow, but that's not the case.
Laptop was always kept cool and dry, it hasn't even seen a sneeze to the keyboard. Device was also on a cooling mat almost 100% of the time. We were only using 2 USB devices at the time - a cooling pad and a wireless adapter for a logitech mouse.
We've configured the device to stop charging battery at 70% so as to reduce potential battery issues as well.
Basically, we've done everything we could to ensure that this device functions properly for a long time. This seems like a manufacturing defect far more than a user error.

RE: Brand response from ASUS Answers
November 9, 2020
Uhhh, I am NOT in contact with Best Buy on this. I wasn't asked to until _after_ I already shipped the device with the RMA Shipping Label provided by ASUS.
Seems like this RMA could be in limbo now. All because the ASUS phone rep didn't refer me to the correct resources.
Could you please follow up on the email I sent?
Kind Regards,

Can I use either rear port directly to a computer or do I need to go through a router first? What’s the purpose of 2 rear ports? Is there a difference in speed?

Only one of the LAN ports have internet at a given time. The only difference is that the top one is 2.5G and the bottom one is 1G. I'm unsure which it selects for Internet if both are connected.

I have heard that most people use the second port for accessing the management interface with a device directly. But I've not confirmed this works myself.

You do not need to go through a router first, but I highly recommend one once you've confirmed connectivity. Otherwise you can only connect a single device.

Is it compatible with Cox

Yes - but they won't be very helpful if you need support since it's a BYOD modem.

Here's a quick cheat sheet based on my experience:

1. Does the light turn solid blue? If yes, you have a cable connection.
2. When connected directly (no router), check your _gateway_ ip. If it is 192.168.1.100 you do not yet have a DHCP lease from Cox.
3. If your gateway IP is anything else, then you have a DHCP lease and Cox is able to provide service. (even if they claim otherwise)
3a. If you have a Cox IP AND DNS IP's then you _should_ be able to reach the internet. If you cannot, it means you are in the "Cox internet captive portal" and there are issues with provisioning. (again, even if they claim otherwise).

I hope these pointers help someone get through the madness that is COX internet support.

Sincerely,

Someone who was a cable tech at one point.

Can i connect my Cox land line to this modem?

No - there are no phone ports on this device. Only two LAN ports.

There is also no battery backup - which is required for VOIP service.

Is this router compatible with cox Internet? I own a large one story house that is built on a big piece of property. Can I buy two and spread them out on the property? Last question will this router work with CCTV IP Cameras?

1. You will need a modem for it to work with Cox cable internet. Ideally a DOCSIS 3.1 or greater modem for the best speeds. If you're lucky enough to have Cox Fiber, it should work out of the box, just plug in the ethernet from your fiber terminal and away you go.

2. You can buy two and you can link them in a wifi mesh, yes! Though you might be surprised at what a single AP can do with range. The 2.4Ghz band, particularly, has MASSIVE range. A single router is more than enough for a mid-sized single family home (2000 sq ft).

3. ASUS Routers are known to work well with CCTV devices. I don't personally have any, but you should be able to manage them pretty well on this device.

Are the satellite nodes included? if so i dont see the pics or mentioned anywhere clearly.

No satellite nodes are included. I think you'd have to go with a Zen Wifi mesh product for something like that.

However, if you have a somewhat recent older model ASUS Router, it may already be capable of being a satellite node.

Are any of you using the dual wan and if so how is it working out? I looked at the manual and the interface it shows for this router is much different than for the BE98 pro model which is very comprehensive and more like my current Asus router.

Dual WAN works well in both Load Balance and Failover mode. The key thing is making sure that the upstream modems/gateways are in transparent mode and assign the WAN ip to the router. Otherwise it has a hard time failing over correctly.

I currently have my Xfinity internet on WAN1 and my Verizon Home Internet on WAN2.

Sometimes I have to go into the router interface to force the failback, but I haven't had to do that for a while.

Live that ultra lifestyle on the ultimate tablet, featuring our largest screen to help you do more.

Does the new s8 line up support smart cards and smart card readers?

Smart Cards? Like the ones in use by the military?

Short Answer: Yes - the kernel is new enough to work with most hardware.

Long Answer: Yes, but it's not "built-in" to android. So it's up to the card reader company to get their drivers into the android kernel. Then it's up to developers (or the card reader company) to make android software to actually make use of the kernel drivers. Only then can an app with CAC login support be used.

In this case, I recommend talking to the I.T divisions on base about what's best supported and go with that. If you are with a civilian agency, talk to I.T. about what they prefer.

If you want to use the smart card as a way to log in to the phone itself, I'm pretty sure that's not supported. If you want this type protection go with a Yubikey or Titan Key.
