An incredibly versatile media/art tablet!
on July 18, 2022
Posted by: BRogers
Verified Purchase:Yes
This tablet is incredible!
Display - 10/10 - The 14inch OLED panel is a sight to behold. Incredible dynamic range and color gamut.
Audio - 7/10 - Good for a tablet, but not quite as good as iPad Pro. -3 pts for lack of headphone jack. +1 point for LDAC codec support.
Stylus - 9/10 - The new SPen is a fantastic tool that needs a slightly better storage area. (Can be remedied with a case)
Performance - 8/10 - Good, but not an Apple device for sure. The 256GB/12GB model has plenty of memory for a full workflow across multiple apps.
Extras - 10/10 - These features really set this tablet apart from the others.
- Ability to use the tablet as a wireless PC graphics tablet with robust stylus support.
- Samsung Dex. (It's really quite good now!)
The first feature is why I decided on this tablet over the latest iPad Pro. It offers incredible versatility for artists who work with programs like Photoshop, Krita, or even Blender.
On the SPen and drawing experience:
It's not quite as good as an iPad Pro, but the versatility makes up for the technical deficiencies. Particularly, app support for low latency and all the features are difficult to find on the Play Store.
The full (or mostly full) feature set seems to be supported by:
- Any Samsung App
- Infinite Painter
- Krita (beta) - I think tilt support is still a bit wonky, though.
On one of these apps, the SPen really shines. The latency and accuracy are both solid and lends a buttery smoothness to the experience. Outside of these apps, the experience varies from acceptable to pretty good - probably because of the raw horsepower of this device.
On using the device as a wifi graphics tablet:
Unfortunately wifi means we must sacrifice latency. That being said, if you have a Wifi6E enabled network like I do, latency is quite good! This technology is meant for lower latency applications such as this, so if you are buying this tablet for this reason, definitely budget for a better router.
Outside of latency, it appears all the technical features of tilt, pressure sensitivity, and accuracy are retained. This is exactly what you need if you prefer to run Krita on the desktop, or perhaps you want to touch up a photo in Adobe Photoshop really quick.
Not Tested:
- Keyboard Case
- Rear Cameras
- AR Features

A review for Linux users
on July 8, 2022
Posted by: BRogers
Verified Purchase:Yes
Here's a detailed summary of the headphones as used in Linux.
Working:
- Wired (USB)
- Wired (Headphone Plug)
- Wireless
- Bluetooth
- Mic passthrough on mic-button long press.
- Mic enable/disable on mic-button short press.
- Better EQ Settings (through EasyEffects + Pipewire)
- All hardware buttons and volume wheels/rockers.
- Basic button feedback (bleeps and bloops to indicate I've pressed a thing)
Not Working:
- RGB - Mic still turns red when muted, though.
- Configurable sleep setting when using wireless.
- Advanced Button feedback (in Windows there's an ethereal voice that details what you just instructed the headset to do)
- 8 channel mode (The wireless adapter somehow supports 8 audio channels in Windows in addition to stereo)
Untested:
- Using Bluetooth and the adapter at the same time. Apparently this is possible and the use case is to chat with friends on discord over Bluetooth on your phone while the adapter is hooked into a gaming console. From what I understand, it performs a 50/50 mix at pretty good quality.
Caveats (Any OS) :
- Wired (USB) is best for audio recording. It's also the most consistent experience.
- Wired (3.5mm headset cable) is best for audio listening, depending on your systems DAC.
--- This also over-rides the out-of-the-box FPS EQ. Which is awful for music.
- Wireless Adapter is pretty darn good, but the sound quality does take a noticeable hit for the mic. Still clear, but notably compressed sounding.
- Bluetooth is bluetooth - It supports AAC, AptX, AptX HD and mSBC, and I'm pretty certain only mSBC is used for calls as it is in my Sony WH1000-XM2 headphones.
Conclusion:
These are ultimately pretty great for me. I don't really care about the features I'm missing because the experience is quite nice regardless. My only criticism is that wireless technologies still have a way to go over a good old fashioned wire. Because of that, it's best to pair what your doing with the best connection method for that media - which can be annoying. I plan to keep this in USB or Wireless Adapter mode most of the time since I have better cans for dedicated music listening. This will be my headset for work (and maybe some play) for the most part.

Very fast m.2 ssd just be wary of your filesystem.

Works incredibly! Just be sure your filesystem has TRIM enabled. If your on windows and Mac, don't worry too much about that, but for linux its very important. F2FS and EXT4 run the fastest and get the advertised speeds. Btrfs and ZFS might not be configured with TRIM enabled and sacrifice performance for reliability reaulting in unusually slow performance.

Very good! But has some quirks.
on May 21, 2022
Posted by: BRogers
Verified Purchase:Yes
Let's get the bad stuff out of the way first - the Logitech gaming software is awful, buggy, and frustrating and the support folks on the web are more infuriating than helpful.
Also, The saved profiles don't store your RGB configuration, so Bluetooth mode always displays the default animation.
Outside of those significant quirks, this is a good keyboard. The wireless adapter and Bluetooth functions work well. Customized keys work well with profiles to keep your settings portable across devices.
The build quality is solid, but a little less premium than I was anticipating. The clicky switches are wonderful to type on despite having significantly less travel than the full sized Romer-G switches or the typical Cherry MX Blues.
The RBG is bright and stunning. Brighter than Razer and Corsair, IMO. It likely has something to do with the low profile switches. That being said, it's a huge hit to battery life. I recommend keeping the brightness low unless you want to charge a lot.

Vornado now offers two distinct ways to be comfortable: both from one beautiful product. Introducing OSCR37 ~ the Vornado Whole Room Tower Circulator with Oscillation On-Demand. Of course, OSCR37 delivers Vornado~s signature whole room circulation - utilizing stationary, high-velocity airflow to continuously circulate all the air in the room. With whole room circulation, everyone in the room remains cool and comfortable ~ and that~s only half the story. OSCR37 also offers a second option: oscillation mode ~ sweeping the room with cooling beams of high-velocity airflow. Designed for smooth, quiet oscillation and embellished with a chromed carry handle, the OSCR37 would be a beautiful and functional addition to any space. There are those that have experienced the constant comfort of whole room circulation. There are those that enjoy the sweeping air experience of oscillation. OSCR37 delivers the best of both worlds. Doesn~t it feel good to have options?

A good tower fan, but an okay Vornado.

This tower fan does the job and is better than similar looking products on the market. The controls are easy and intuitive. The included remote is convenient and reliable.
However, compared to other Vornado fans, the performance does leave a little to be desired.
At this performance, a DC model makes a lot more sense. If they were to ever release a DC version of this fan, I'd say go for that instead.

Way nicer than a SanDisk for not much more!
on May 21, 2022

This USB 3.1 drive is heavier than expected, lending to a feel of higher quality. I'm not sure if it's metal or ceramic, but the weight and feel are top notch.
It's backwards compatible to USB 3.0 and 2.0 (with caveats). The performance over 3.1 is excellent and competes against my Samsung T5 in convenience and portability.
Transferring files work great, liveUSB systems (Linux) are quick to load and very snappy.
I only have one gripe and it's very minor. The connector protrudes from the housing ever-so-slightly, marring it's otherwise high quality finish.

This case is really good! I love how much space I have for all of my components and whatever water cooling system tickles my fancy.
I only deduct 1 star because the value isn't as good as the 4000D or 5000D. Additionally, I would've preferred more fans included with the case.

Great Motherboard with lots of features!
on March 28, 2022
Posted by: BRogers
Verified Purchase:Yes
I bought this motherboard to go along with my Ryzen 9 5950X, 32GB of DDR4-3600 RAM, and a Samsung 980 PRO Gen4 m.2 ssd.
This thing is an absolute dream. Between the flashback feature, diagnostic display, and great power delivery - this thing was a breeze to setup.
No fiddling with DDR4 timings, just select your DOCP Overclock and go!
Also much of the features are "Set up and forget" in that they don't require additional software to be used. These are things like fan curves, overclocking, PBO boosts, and automatically switching between PBO and a static overclock based on power load.
Since I use Linux, this was crucial. Most configuration software tends to be Windows only.

Mobo spontaneously combusted at idle - 6 months in
By BRogers
I've had the unit about 6 months now. Seemed to be working great until yesterday.
Laptop was left idle with Discord running in the background. We then heard a loud "pop" and smelt this awful burning smell. Once we figured out it was the laptop we unplugged and made sure it wasn't smoldering.
Currently trying to start an RMA and there is extreme skepticism every step of the way. They seem to think we've damaged our laptop somehow, but that's not the case.
Laptop was always kept cool and dry, it hasn't even seen a sneeze to the keyboard. Device was also on a cooling mat almost 100% of the time. We were only using 2 USB devices at the time - a cooling pad and a wireless adapter for a logitech mouse.
We've configured the device to stop charging battery at 70% so as to reduce potential battery issues as well.
Basically, we've done everything we could to ensure that this device functions properly for a long time. This seems like a manufacturing defect far more than a user error.

RE: Brand response from ASUS Answers
November 9, 2020
Uhhh, I am NOT in contact with Best Buy on this. I wasn't asked to until _after_ I already shipped the device with the RMA Shipping Label provided by ASUS.
Seems like this RMA could be in limbo now. All because the ASUS phone rep didn't refer me to the correct resources.
Could you please follow up on the email I sent?
Kind Regards,

Can I use either rear port directly to a computer or do I need to go through a router first? What’s the purpose of 2 rear ports? Is there a difference in speed?

Only one of the LAN ports have internet at a given time. The only difference is that the top one is 2.5G and the bottom one is 1G. I'm unsure which it selects for Internet if both are connected.

I have heard that most people use the second port for accessing the management interface with a device directly. But I've not confirmed this works myself.

You do not need to go through a router first, but I highly recommend one once you've confirmed connectivity. Otherwise you can only connect a single device.

Is it compatible with Cox

Yes - but they won't be very helpful if you need support since it's a BYOD modem.

Here's a quick cheat sheet based on my experience:

1. Does the light turn solid blue? If yes, you have a cable connection.
2. When connected directly (no router), check your _gateway_ ip. If it is 192.168.1.100 you do not yet have a DHCP lease from Cox.
3. If your gateway IP is anything else, then you have a DHCP lease and Cox is able to provide service. (even if they claim otherwise)
3a. If you have a Cox IP AND DNS IP's then you _should_ be able to reach the internet. If you cannot, it means you are in the "Cox internet captive portal" and there are issues with provisioning. (again, even if they claim otherwise).

I hope these pointers help someone get through the madness that is COX internet support.

Sincerely,

Someone who was a cable tech at one point.

No - there are no phone ports on this device. Only two LAN ports.

There is also no battery backup - which is required for VOIP service.

The RT-BE96U~s dual 10 Gbps ports make it a great choice for servers or NAS devices. These are more convenient than simply combining multiple gigabit Ethernet ports, and they help increase your available bandwidth to avoid data bottlenecks throughout your whole network. Users are also empowered to leverage multiple high-speed internet service providers.

Is this router compatible with cox Internet? I own a large one story house that is built on a big piece of property. Can I buy two and spread them out on the property? Last question will this router work with CCTV IP Cameras?

1. You will need a modem for it to work with Cox cable internet. Ideally a DOCSIS 3.1 or greater modem for the best speeds. If you're lucky enough to have Cox Fiber, it should work out of the box, just plug in the ethernet from your fiber terminal and away you go.

2. You can buy two and you can link them in a wifi mesh, yes! Though you might be surprised at what a single AP can do with range. The 2.4Ghz band, particularly, has MASSIVE range. A single router is more than enough for a mid-sized single family home (2000 sq ft).

3. ASUS Routers are known to work well with CCTV devices. I don't personally have any, but you should be able to manage them pretty well on this device.

Are the satellite nodes included? if so i dont see the pics or mentioned anywhere clearly.

No satellite nodes are included. I think you'd have to go with a Zen Wifi mesh product for something like that.

However, if you have a somewhat recent older model ASUS Router, it may already be capable of being a satellite node.

Are any of you using the dual wan and if so how is it working out? I looked at the manual and the interface it shows for this router is much different than for the BE98 pro model which is very comprehensive and more like my current Asus router.

Dual WAN works well in both Load Balance and Failover mode. The key thing is making sure that the upstream modems/gateways are in transparent mode and assign the WAN ip to the router. Otherwise it has a hard time failing over correctly.

I currently have my Xfinity internet on WAN1 and my Verizon Home Internet on WAN2.

Sometimes I have to go into the router interface to force the failback, but I haven't had to do that for a while.

Does the new s8 line up support smart cards and smart card readers?

Smart Cards? Like the ones in use by the military?

Short Answer: Yes - the kernel is new enough to work with most hardware.

Long Answer: Yes, but it's not "built-in" to android. So it's up to the card reader company to get their drivers into the android kernel. Then it's up to developers (or the card reader company) to make android software to actually make use of the kernel drivers. Only then can an app with CAC login support be used.

In this case, I recommend talking to the I.T divisions on base about what's best supported and go with that. If you are with a civilian agency, talk to I.T. about what they prefer.

If you want to use the smart card as a way to log in to the phone itself, I'm pretty sure that's not supported. If you want this type protection go with a Yubikey or Titan Key.
