Live and Breathe Love

Barry Jenkins cements his directorial style with “If Beale Street Could Talk”. There is a lot of lush romance that feels so lyrical on the top with a lot of despair and sadness underneath. It truly is a work of art and one of the best films of 2018.
The film is one of the best casted of the year. Stephan James is soulful and passionate. KiKi Layne is fantastic. She is strong while facing so much adversity. It’s a wonderful performance. Regina King has a few really strong scenes and is absolutely giving us an Oscar worthy performance. Jenkins’ camera close-ups really favor her. Brian Tyree Henry is a marvel. He shows up briefly and delivers a wonderful monologue that gives you the chills and again the camera lingers on his face. The rest of the cast is up to the task. Jenkins brilliantly cast well known actors in smaller roles that kind of flip the script on their personas. “Beale Street” truly has one of the best ensembles.
Jenkins again teams up with James Laxton (Moonlight) to handle the cinematography. Jenkins and Laxton perfect the close-up. The faces and camera movements are one of the best things about the film. The filming style is bold and elegant. It’s incredible. Another great re-teaming is composer, Nicholas Britell (also of Moonlight) who in my opinion makes the finest score of the year. It’s a score laden with sweeping melodies that bring those already lush scenes crafted by Jenkins to life.
“If Beale Street Could Talk” is a fantastic adaptation and he succeeds in letting James Baldwin truly live and breathe in this work. It let’s love and righteous anger triumph.

Beguiling 70s Cult Classic

"Vanishing Point" takes us away from the 60s and drives us full throttle into the 70s. It's a cult classic filled with a layer of existentialism and mysticism that really elevates the film beyond other run of the mill car films. Barry Newman is just right in the role of Kowalski who seems to find a certain level of freedom as he drives and drives further away from 'the man'. Kowalski becomes a man who just goes for it and even goes out on his own terms. "Vanishing Point" is truly a beguiling and artsy pleasure.

The Little Things

What “The Big Sick” ends up accomplishing, is -- in my mind -- perfect romantic comedy.
It’s funny, touching, and perceptive. The way in which it deals with cultural/religious differences is timely, as is the reminder of how much of a melting pot the United States has become. Kumail and Emily have infused the screenplay with genuine details. These little things are one reason why “The Big Sick” works. We sense from the beginning that, although the framework is that of a romantic comedy, there’s something true-to-life going on here.

What Power Can Do
on May 21, 2019

Let’s get one thing out of the way, Bale’s transformation into the former Vice President, Dick Cheney is flawless and makes the film worth the price of admission alone. Watching the likes of Amy Adams, Steve Carell and Sam Rockwell in supporting roles is a blast as well. They’re all quite good. McKay’s direction zigs and zags here and there and tonally it doesn’t always work and frankly, it condescends some. Nevertheless “Vice” remains highly entertaining and offers substantial food for thought and that’s definitely no small feat.
“Vice” and McKay are toying with the audience the whole way through. It plays as farce, scathing indictment, black comedy, dark-satire, and a painful reminder of what power can do. Despite McKay’s condescending tone, it’s not difficult to recognize “Vice” as the work of the man who wrote and directed “The Big Short”, one of 2015’s best films and frankly, “Vice” is one of 2018’s best.

The one that started it all! Experience the terror - from the beginning - with the first chilling chapter of the Alien saga, directed by Ridley Scott and starring Sigourney Weaver in her breakout performance as Ripley. When the crew of the space-tug Nostromo responds to a distress signal from a barren planet, they discover a mysterious life form that breeds within human hosts. The acid-blooded extraterrestrial proves to be the ultimate adversary as crew members battle to stay alive and prevent the deadly creature from reaching Earth.

A Perfect Organism and A Perfect Movie
on May 21, 2019

Now this is how a monster movie should be made. From the very first shot the music tells you there is something wrong and it doesn't let up for the entire film. More then half of the film is people walking about looking for the alien, and while this might sound boring as all get-out it is chilling. Everything is done well. The characters are pretty much fleshed out or to the very least they are more than in other monster movies. The sets are all dungeon like and creepy, all grey and humid and claustrophobic. The music is there but never overwhelming. What is especially good about this film isn't that they spend all their time trying to kill an alien; it's that you don't know if they will be able to because no one, not them, not you, knows how to get rid of the thing because, well, it's an alien.
This 4K UHD presentation is fantastic and marked improvement over the already beautiful blu-ray.

Fantastic Revenge Flick

It’s a fantastic revenge flick, that’s elevated beyond the usual tropes of the genre with excellent acting. Devane and Jones give nuanced performances as men who have lost their souls in another land. At times, the film’s loses points for its pacing and Schrader’s obsession with male ritual, nevertheless “Rolling Thunder” is a crisp, well directed film that use its Southern Texas locals to full use. It really is one of the best of its kind.
The Blu-ray presentation is adequate. It still has the print’s flaws in it and often the detail of the picture is quite good

Latest Model is an Improvement

I previously owned the Studio 2.0 and they broke recently and instead of having them repaired, I decided to spring for 3.0s since they were on sale at Best Buy. They're more comfortable and seem to repel body oils and sweat better. The sound for the most part is still of the same quality as the previous model and could be better, I just can't tell for sure. And if you haven't owned Beats before, they have great sound quality. They're know for being bass heavy and often to a fault but it does seem as if that has evened out some with this latest model, but again I can't be sure. Try them for yourself! I know I love using them for music and movie viewing at home.

I loved the portability and charging while on the go. They fit in my pocket perfectly and paired easy enough. The ease of pausing by removing a pod from the ear was excellent, but these fell out of my ear to easily and weren’t always comfortable.

This Sony UHD player is larger than most but it’s tech is great and the discs look really good. It’s also the only UHD player that I know of that supports Bluetooth, so I love using it and was glad I replaced my Samsung UHD player with this one.
