After playing RE2 remake I decided to give this one a try. Though the gameplay is solid the story is wayyyyyy too over the top for me. I really enjoyed RE2 claustrophobic corridors and the looming dread Mr. X gave (felt somewhat like Alien Isolation). In RE3 the Tyrant pops up out of nowhere constantly, to the point it gets tiring. It’s short, so pick it up when it’s on a deep sale.

The genre-defining masterpiece Resident Evil 2 returns, completely rebuilt from the ground up for a deeper narrative experience. Using Capcom~s proprietary RE Engine, Resident Evil 2 offers a fresh take on the classic survival horror saga with breathtakingly realistic visuals, heart-poundingly immersive audio, a new over-the-shoulder camera, and modernized controls on top of gameplay modes from the original game.

My first RE game was 7 so when this got remade I figured why not. This game is incredible. The only gripes I have is by the end things get a little over the top and some of the dialogue is super corny but as far as the gameplay and atmosphere is amazing.

Enjoyed it but...

After hearing everyone praise this game for years I decided to try it. First off, the Switch version runs super smooth which still surprised me despite watching tons of performance breakdowns on YouTube. Anyways, the gameplay felt fresh and the visuals were gorgeous. The story for me was emotional in parts but in others I didn’t feel much when I was “supposed to”. I didn’t totally love the save feature, part of it being my fault because I would forget to save and then die and have to redo a long section. By far the most frustrating part of the game for me was the escape sequences. Though the idea of them is cool I felt they were too punishing in the sense, there is no way you could just power through it on your first try. I couldn’t just use my reflexes to get through it, I had to rely on trial and error. So after the 30th time and several breaks later I’d get through it but instead of feeling relief from the urgency I just felt angry. The controls were really tight but I felt that because kids nowadays play platformers with the analog stick the dpad got left by the wayside. A lot of the platforming involves this slingshot type of system that when you do it you need to point diagonally to get to higher ground. Well with the Switch’s dpad a lot of the time pointing at 3oclock either gave the game an input of just UP or Right, so that was frustrating. The soundtrack was phenomenal and was very Disney like. All in all it was a good time but it wasn’t without some headaches.

Everything about this receiver and remote feels cheap. Most of the channels feature programs that look like they were filmed with a crumbled up ball of aluminum foil that was thrown in the corner and squirted with mustard. You basically have to attach a sniper scope to the remote so you can hit the censor because if you at all deviate from the microscopic radius of the censor it’ll read your input like you yelling at Helen Keller to “stop” as she walks out in front of on coming traffic. When scrolling through channels in the “up” direction the number goes up. When in the menu scrolling “up” means the channels go down. The slightest of wind, the satellite goes out. The most minuscule amount of lactation the clouds produce, the satellite goes out. When my neighbor clogs his toilet, the satellite goes out. Anyways, the receiver sucks and that’s the bottom line cause Stone Cold said so.

This game just oozes originality. Never have I played anything like it and I found the main bulk of the gameplay (delivering packages) oddly therapeutic. The story was extremely interesting and acted beautifully, though at times it could be hard to grasp (at least for me it was). I haven’t been so engrossed into a game’s world since Red Dead Redemption 2. I have only a couple gripes, for one the pacing and a somewhat clunky combat system. When I play games I’m looking for new experiences and originality and this game gives me that and then some. The soundtrack is phenomenal too!

I enjoyed the gameplay but when it came to the story I seemed to not really care. There was definitely some moments between Jonah and Lara that were gripping but for me that was about it. The villain didn’t do much for me and the attempts they made to try and make me care for certain characters fell flat for me. Graphics were pretty good all around, the scenery leading in that department. The character models on the other hand were a hit and a miss. Lara seemed stellar for the most part and by the way, what shampoo is she using? Because throughout the whole game it looked squeaky clean haha! The one Jaguar you face relatively early in the game looked so odd to me it was distracting. It basically looked like a flat texture stretched out over a skeleton. I don’t recall seeing any fur or nothing... anyyyyyyway. They added a few new climbing mechanics that added to the very tired some “point analog stick in one direction and press x” gameplay which I feel was needed to shake it up a little. The game is still linear but has these little hubs to roam around in and collect things that I feel we’re handled decently besides how they handled the collecting part of it. There’s always something Lara can pick up off the ground within a 3 foot radius and that gets EXTREMELY tedious. The crafting supplies I get, you need wood for arrows, that’s cool. But it’s the treasure part of it that looses its whole Indiana Jones/Nathan Drake feel to it. I enjoy looking for hidden items but when they’re not that hidden and so common you tend to not care as much, at least for me. I like the game, just not as much as the previous two and to me it still hasn’t lived up to the thing it so desperately is trying to emulate, a la Uncharted.

It grew on me!

First off I had purchased this a couple years ago after hearing about how amazing it was. I played about 5 minutes of it and for some reason it didn’t real me in. Every few months or so I’d try it again and still nothing. I eventually got rid of it then of course remorse set in and I wanted to give it one last try. Recently it went on sale for PlayStation’s “Days of Play” sale for $9.99. At the time I still had my Gamers Club Unlocked, so I got an extra 20% off so I figured, why not? I’ve had it for a few days now and I’ve been playing it non stop. The challenge is so refreshing for me and rewarding. I never feel like my deaths are cheap, it’s always because you’ve done something wrong and as a result you get destroyed. The upgrading system is really addictive for me. I absolutely love the thrill ride of earning a bunch of ‘blood echoes’ (games currency) to upgrade my character and deciding whether or not to push forward and earn more and risk dying then having to track down that enemy that killed me to retrieve them or just back track to the nearest lamp (checkpoint). I could go on and on but I feel like this games been out for so long you’ve either made up your mind on buying it or not so I’ll end it here.
