Mysterious, melancholic beauty

I know the album dropped early in the year, but discovering this record months into a pandemic made for surreal comfort. He calls it “country music for people who don’t like country music,” and I suppose that fits. It has a lot of what I like about country music, but it is also very psychedelic and rather confessional, albeit in a somewhat elliptical way. Favorite album in this weird year.

I suppose Death in Vegas falls into the category of DJ oriented music? Sorta like the Dust & Chemical Brothers? David Holmes? It’s English, maybe my blind spot is an American thing. Anyway, their sound has always been more organic than electronic, and this vinyl pressing really brings it to life. Sounds more like an insane psychedelic band. MOV always delivers.

Her previous EP, Begin Again, stands as some of her most experimental work in terms of arrangements and the presentation of each song as its own release. This album is far more cohesive, and while it plays it somewhat safe with the music, she seems to have really pushed herself with her lyrics, focusing on the confusion, pain, and ultimately the resolve required for this particular moment in time. As much as I like it when Nojo blows minds, I am particularly grateful for the comfort and empathy offered with this album.

Vinyl LP pressing. 2013 debut album from New Zealand singer/songwriter Ella Yelich-O'Connor AKA Lorde. It'd be easy to mistake Ella for a seasoned tunesmith from the American South, one who carries a heavy heart that's been ravaged by careless men over time. But in truth, Lorde recorded these songs as a 16-year old Kiwi championed by the likes of Perez Hilton and Grimes. She has a timeless knack for songcraft with a sophisticated pop savvy that most people over 30 can't find without collaboration. Lorde needs no collaborative hacks - she writes and sings her own songs.
