A Solid Horror Universe

When “The Conjuring” came out in 2014, it reignited my love for horror films with its old school approach. The second film is good even though it’s not quite as strong as the first one. The “Annabelle” spin-offs are also enjoyable though the second and third films are the best in that series. “The Nun” is honestly an average film and the weakest of this particular bunch but you should still find some enjoyment despite its weaknesses.

Granted, there haven’t been that many films in 2020, but this update from Blumhouse of “The Invisible Man” is without a doubt one of the best. Elisabeth Moss gives a fantastic performance as a woman who is being terrified by an unseen boyfriend who may have cracked the key to invisibility! Definitely a must watch!

What can I say about this film that hasn’t been said before! Wes Craven’s masterpiece still holds up today as a solid piece of horror entertainment. Played mostly straight, Robert Englund originated a pop culture icon when he played Freddy Krueger for the first time in this film that still scares audiences today!

Not as Bad As They Say!

I went into “The Hobbit” thinking that these films would be terrible based on other fans’ recommendations. I was surprised to find that while these three films are definitely not as good as “The Lord of the Rings”, I still enjoyed them quite a bit. The cast is solid and despite adding some obvious padding and elements from other Tolkien stories such as “The Silmarillion”, this is still a pretty solid trilogy of films. I say it’s definitely a good idea to give these films a go if you haven’t already and I’ve heard that the Extended Editions are the way to go!

Another Excellent Adaptation from Frank Darabont

This film is a little overly long and not quite as good as “The Shawshank Redemption, but that’s not really saying much as this is still a fantastic film with plenty of heart!

There are those rare films where it feels like you’re watching them for the first time no matter how many times you’ve seen it before. “The Shawshank Redemption” is one of those films. Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman headline an amazing cast in a film that is beautifully directed by Frank Darabont. A genuine classic and the best of them all!

If you like your horror weird, then I have a movie for you! “Phantasm” introduced the world to Angus Scrimm’s Tall Man and started what was ultimately a five film saga fo the strange. The movie goes to many strange places as you try to determine what’s real and what isn’t. A true horror film for true horror fans! The amateurs need not apply for this one.

I love Star Wars and despite what some on the internet have said, I thought that “The Rise of Skywalker” was a satisfying finale to what is now known as “The Skywalker Saga”. Yes, the film is not perfect because it’s trying to wrap up a whole nine film saga, but it gets more right than wrong in my opinion and brings both the Sequel Trilogy and saga to a fun close. I definitely recommend it!
