Far East Meets West

"Red Sun" provides a great blend of the American western and the Japanese samurai film, starring the classic actors Charles Bronson and Toshiro Mifune. The plot hinges around Bronson and Mifune recovering a stolen samurai sword taken in a train robbery, and the love-hate relationship between them along the way. Interestingly, western and samurai films had an influence on each other, and this film combines the best of both worlds. In fact, Mifune was known for acting in "The Seven Samurai," which later spawned the American remake "The Magnificent Seven" (in which Bronson starred). Overall, this is a great combination for fans of either genre, and especially rewarding for fans of both.

One of Bakshi's Finest Works

"American Pop" is arguably one of Ralph Bakshi's finest works. In this movie, Bakshi tells the story of four generations of a family, united in an interest in music during their respective time periods. The movie begins around the late 1800's in Russia, following one character's emigration to America, and following his descendants through the early 1980's. The movie provides a lot of reference to historical evens, as well as the various styles of music featured during the time periods. Kudos!

"1917" definitely keeps the viewer engaged throughout the movie. Similar to "Saving Private Ryan," the story follows two characters on a mission, and the artistry of the performance keeps the viewer on the edge of his or her seat. I had the pleasure of seeing the movie on the big screen, which added to the intensity, but even on the smaller screen, "1917" delivers!

I grew up watching "Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood," and have always admired Fred Rogers for all his contributions to the development and education of America's youth. While Tom Hanks didn't really resemble Fred Rogers that much, he did an excellent job of capturing his mannerisms and the the gist of his character. Kudos!

This DVD provides a great double-feature of two classic silent horror films, both starring Lon Chaney. Chaney was known as the "Man of 1000 Faces," and his makeup in both roles was astronomical for that time period. Both in his portrayal as Quasimodo in "The Hunchback of Notre Dame," and as Erik/The Phantom in "The Phantom of the Opera," the viewer will not be disappointed. And by watching these original films (as opposed to their remakes) as they were released nearly 100 years ago, the experience can provide extra enlightenment to the viewer of a time period long gone. Kudos!!
