Aquaman in 3D makes you feel you're underwater!

The movie was great, better than most in the DC Extended Universe, but that's another story for another day. The story was good, the character development was great, and the action was everything I had hoped for. The 3D experience of it all was incredible! I've seen Finding Nemo in 3D, and that made me feel like I was underwater. Aquaman took the 3D experience to another level for the simple fact that it's live-action. It wasn't annoyingly right-in-your-face 3D, but the depths felt natural, which is how I like to experience it. Definitely give this DCEU movie a go!

Cult Classic Comedy in a Cool Case

Ligers. Skills. Pursuit of love. Sweet dance moves. Hilarious off-beat one-liners. And the case it comes in. All of these are the reasons why I had to include "Napolean Dynamite" to my collection.

This Unnecessary Sequel Still Looks & Sounds Great

I loved "Pitch Perfect", and the second one even more so. This third installment is a cash cow from Hollywood that tried to blend once again the elements that made the first 2 films work, but they sadly didn't. As much as I wanted this film to be good, even just for me, I couldn't get it above "decent". The story tried to answer the question "what's next for these girls after college? and what about their relationships with each other?" but it fell short from full satisfaction. That's not to say that this 3rd - and hopefully final - installment of the "Pitch Perfect" franchise is absent of the bonds and friendships and awesome a capella. When the ending presents itself as to how everyone will move on to the next chapter of their lives, it is a tender moment. The film has its fun musical numbers in its own right. But the expectation that was set from the first film were set higher with the second film, and the third just didn't measure up. But a fan of the "Pitch Perfect" series should see this series to the end.
On the technical side, Hollywood is going to hear it once again from me: seriously Hollywood, why make the new standard 4K when you're filming and finishing films in anything less than 4K?!?!?! That said, and I should have said this about the first 2 films as well, it does look better than the standard Blu-ray. Better picture clarity, and of course a better color palette thanks to the HDR10 presentation are some of the reasons to go with the 4K release instead of the standard Blu-ray. But Universal shot themselves in the foot when it comes to the audio, giving 4K Blu-ray buyers the same audio release as the standard Blu-ray. Why, oh why would a customer purchase the 4K over the audio in a film about a capella singers when they can get the same audio experience on the standard Blu-ray? The only reason why I did was just to round out the trilogy in the same 4K format. The DTS:X Master Audio soundtrack is great, simply great, and I don't think Universal could have released a better track... which is why it was simply wrong on their part to put it on the standard Blu-ray as well. The whole point of 4K, just like the whole point of Blu-ray when DVDs were the standard, is that you're missing out on something great by not going with the best available format.
Do I recommend this film? Yes, but only to finish out a lovable series.

Pitch Perfect 2 Hits All The Right Notes Again!

I loved "Pitch Perfect" from the get-go for several reasons. All of the elements that made the first one great - the musical performances, the jokes, the competitions, and most importantly the bonds and friendships - are brought back and expanded on, including great new additions to the cast. Without overdoing it, this film has more flash, better musical numbers, funnier jokes, and a lot more heart.
Just like the 4K of its predecessor, the film was digitally photographed and reportedly finished at 2K. I'm going to say this again: seriously Hollywood, why make the new standard 4K when you're filming and finishing films in anything less than 4K?!?!?! But when it comes to the audio, again just like with its predecessor, the standard Blu-ray sounds cool with its DTS-HD 5.1 track, but the DTS:X Master Audio soundtrack on the 4K disc is simply better. There are moments when you feel you're not watching the musical performances, rather you feel you're a part of it. It's immersive. That might seem weird while watching a film where the vocals are naturally front and center, but when the music starts, the movie doesn't forget you're in a 3D space so the vocals move with the camera. A great follow-up to the original, you'll have the same, if not more, fun with this one too.

The 4K is (aurally) Pitch Perfect!

I remember hearing the buzz about "Pitch Perfect" right about the time the movie hit Redbox on Blu-ray - better late than never - so I thought, what the heck, I'll rent it and see what this a capella musical was about. I was pleasantly surprised, overwhelmingly so, at how much fun and aurally awesome the musical numbers were! I kept it for an extra day and winded up watching it a total of 3 times. The musical performances, the jokes, the competitions, and most importantly the inseparable bond formed by the a capella singers despite their differences made this an all-around good movie. Naturally I added it to my collection. When the 4K came out, I was skeptical: the film was digitally photographed and reportedly finished at 2K - seriously Hollywood, why make the new standard 4K when you're filming and finishing films in anything less than 4K?!?!?! So why would I double-dip and upgrade this movie that has little to no special visual effects? The answer is quite simple: the audio! Don't get me wrong. The standard Blu-ray sounds great with its DTS-HD 5.1 track, but man, oh man, the DTS:X Master Audio soundtrack hits all the right notes on the 4K disc. Once you hear how good it sounds, you can't un-hear it, and that'll become your new standard. As flashy as this film is, the real flash is exhibited in the musical talents of the actresses and actors that live up to the pitch perfect musical performance expectation set by the title of the film. So cough up the extra couple of bucks. Your ears will thank you.

A relevant historical film

Before Thurgood Marshall became U.S. Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, before the landmark case of Brown v Education Board, Thurgood Marshall (superbly performed by Chadwick Boseman) was an incredible attorney taking on cases for the NAACP, which at the time was funding the legal battles defending innocent black people in America who were accused because of their race. The case this film focuses on is a white socialite accusing her black domestic worker of raping her and attempted murder. The relevant facts that come out during the trial, and how they come out, are riveting. One of the strong messages of the film is the role white privilege and white supremacy played in 20th century America, how those same behaviors are still present today, and how American minorities such as the black community and the Jewish community (Marshall's co-counsel, played fantastically by the ever-entertaining Josh Gad) were and still are on the receiving end of hate crimes, all the more present because of the case they took on, that standing up against legal discrimination exposed you to a heightened level of hate crime and it would be easier to just confess to a crime you are innocent of. With the persecution of minorities in America on the rise like never before, the relevancy of this film is on par with "Malcolm X" and "Selma".

Verdict: Your Collection Is Incomplete w/o This

I don't say this lightly: your film collection is incomplete without "12 Angry Men". There are a few films out there that belong in every collection, and this incredible examination of bias and prejudice in America's jury room needs to be owned by every American citizen to be able to reflect on our own biases and prejudices.
Aside from the film itself, Criterion Collection has carefully remastered this handsomely-made film and given it the release it deserves.

This collection of nine films from revered comic director Mel Brooks includes The Twelve Chairs, Blazing Saddles, Silent Movie, his Hitchcock pastiche High Anxiety, History of the World Part I, his remake of To Be or Not to Be, the Star Wars spoof Spaceballs, and Robin Hood: Men In Tights.

If you love, or even like, Mel Brooks, this collection is a must for your collection. In case you've been living under a rock for the last 50 years, Mel Brooks is one of the great comedians of our time, and his best works are compiled in this collection (except for "The Producers", oh how I wish it was in this collection... hence, the 4-star rating, not 5.)

Disney makes fun of itself, and it's funny!

If you're an avid Disney fan, you've probably noticed the unrealistic things that happen to the characters - for starters, singing your feelings in perfect rhymes and perfectly choreographed dance numbers - that don't happen in real life. In this movie, animated Giselle gets a literal crash course of reality when her evil stepmother Queen Narissa sends her to our world to New York City. The evil queen does so bent on the thought that if her stepson Prince Edward marries Giselle, that will automatically remove her from power. Prince Edward goes on yet another distracted adventure in pursuit of Giselle - set to marry her after having met her for only one day - while Giselle is trying to make sense of the world she's been cast to after being rescued by the charming single father divorce lawyer Robert Philip.
What ensues is hilarity.

Hilarious family film looks bold in 4K

As an avid Disney fan, I was excited about this film because of how nostalgic it was, from Star Wars and Marvel characters (Disney-owned) and Disney princesses - I laughed so hard during those scenes when Disney was poking fun of itself and its historic foul treatment of women - to everyday internet things not owned by Disney. The "cameo" of Stan Lee was a nice touch as well. The story of friendship and putting your friends' needs ahead of your own wants is a nice moral.
While I definitely favor the 4K + HDR10+ display over the standard Blu-ray, I can't say I'm fully satisfied with this film over one simple fact: Disney finished it in 2.8K resolution instead of 4K, making it an "upscaled 4K" picture. This is done with a LOT of films, and it's not a mystery why: it takes tens of thousands of hours to render the computer-generated graphics at 2.8K, so can you imagine how much longer and how much more money it would take to render a 4K film? From a resources perspective, I totally understand why that decision was made, but for a format that displays a 4K resolution, why render it as 2.8K and upscale it to 4K?! (yes, I have a lot of pent-up anger about this...) That said, the colors in this animated feature really POP and look bold, even striking at time, and that's something that HDR10+ takes credit for, which won't be found on the standard Blu-ray format.
As far as the audio goes, Disney has been dropping the ball with almost all of its home releases for the last couple of years, making the audio levels about 10-15 dB lower than other studio releases. Once you adjust your volume up, everything sounds awesome. The Dolby Atmos track - which is basically surround sound with added height - makes for an immersive experience, bringing the viewer into the world of the internet like never before.
So if you want to get the most out of your 4K TV display, don't skip out on the 4K release of this funny family film. Even if you don't have a 4K player, the included digital code gives you a 4K digital copy on Movies Anywhere, Vudu, Apple, and other linked platforms. But if you're a disc person like me, odds are your 4K TV is programmed to do an incredible job of upscaling your standard Blu-ray to 4K display, the same way a Blu-ray player upscales DVDs. Even if you don't have a 4K TV yet, they are the future, and you should "future-proof" your collection for as long as possible. (Remember when future-proofing your movie collection meant buying the DVD instead of the VHS? lol)
