Fun but not as memorable as WD2.

Watch Dogs had a ton of hype back in 2012, once it was released in 2014, it debuted to a ton of flack for it's watered down graphics compared to it's E3 video, but it still sold extremely well. The game was decent enough, some decent sandbox activities, some interesting gameplay mechanics with the hacking, but it lacked an interesting story or engaging lead character and some meh driving and shooting gameplay. The sequel came out 2 years later, improved on pretty much everything the previous game did wrong. After 4 years if waiting, we finally got a sequel, but does it improve upon the previous game or just deliver more of the same?
In a near-future London, the government cracks down on anti-ctOS group, DedSec, after the group is blamed for a terrorist action on multiple government buildings. Months later, DedSec dust themselves off and plan on finding out who framed them while also taking down the man. To do so, you must recruit anyone who could help the cause and save London. Can you save your city?
Okay, to put it bluntly, it's a better game than the first game, but it fails in comparison to the previous game. The London setting is fairly unique sandbox for the open world, though not the first to do it, it's so little underutilized as a playground, it feels fresh. Graphically, I feel the game held back a bit because of the cross-generation the game is promoting, but looks better than what happened to the first game. Gameplay is largely the same, but with the recruitment angle being the new toy, here.
It works really well, but gets repetitive from having too many similar missions to recruit potential members. The lack of a true central playable character hurts the relatability of the lead, and makes it less immersive. The plot is also more of the same, in the same vein of the previous Watch Dogs games. Driving is also the same and the activities also very similar.
Sadly, the unique online modes are missing at the time of the review, making this less than the previous two games, sadly. Hopefully the online returns soon and .makes this a killer game to return to.
Overall, this is a fun game, but not a full priced experience, just one to wait when it hits $40 or less.

A great console!

After a slightly disappointing previous console, the Wii U, selling way under projections and only lasting half the life cycle of the original Wii, Nintendo needed a big hit to turn themselves around. While taking the motion controls of the Wii, the handheld gamepad of the Wii U, and the cartridges of the 3DS cut in half, Nintendo bridged the gap with an amazing portable/homebound console.
Nintendo even further whittled down the system to a cheaper and completely mobile unit, and with impressive results. While the lack of any HD Rumble, docking and projection, it more than makes up for in it's quite extensive library and impressive technical prowess of a handheld. The screen is a little smaller than the standard Switch, but the screen packs a higher ppi (pixels per inch) count that makes it look a tad sharper, and a longer battery make it more than capable of playing Zelda on the go.
The lack of rumble stinks, but the ability to hookup wireless pro controllers or JoyCons make it a bit more easier to forgive, but the price of those controllers are unforgivable. And you can only use wireless controllers, and a few games require the JoyCons to play (Super Mario Party, ARMS and a few others).
Still, the amount of games that are available (some great first party support, 3rd party support is also fairly strong), plenty of HD remakes available on the system (Though rarely an upgrade visually, since the system isn't a graphics powerhouse) and it looks fantastic and stylish to carry around. It's cheap enough to recommend for kids or gamers on the go or wanting to game while vacationing, but a better experience is to be had with the docked variant.

A lovely and economical appliance, that manages to cook just right and make it healthier without grease or oil. The basket doesn't hold a lot of food, and the lack of a timer hurts a tad, but it's easy to enjoy and cook food!

Stallone sings country....
on July 20, 2020
Posted by: Jakeinlivincolor
Verified Purchase:Yes
Ok, you have a talented director, hot off his classic film, A Christmas Story, a great leading man and a fantastic country singer making a comedy. Well, you could say it has the potential to be a good movie, but so much goes wrong.
Dolly Parton is a country singer under a cruel contract by her sleasy manager, desperate for freedom. He makes a bet with her, saying the next person he sees, she will have to make him a country singer. Enter Sylvester Stallone, a NYC cabbie who is seen, and she is forced to get him to be a singer or else have the contract extended. Hijinx ensues with not a lot of laughs.
Bob Clark has made some classics, but he's also made some stinkers before his untimely death well over a decade ago. Loose Cannons, Baby Geniuses, Baby Geniuses 2, and a few others that stain his filmography, and this probably falls in line with those losers. While Rhinestone isn't that bad of a movie, and certainly better than the ones I listed above, this isn't a good movie. Stallone and Parton are likable enough, but he just can't sing country songs well (I dunno if he can sing at all, truth be told) and their chemistry isn't the strongest either.
The soundtrack should be filled with some winners, but it's largely a forgotten slew of original songs written by Dolly herself. Sad being she is one of the great writers of country music. Stallone can work in a comedy, but the screenplay doesn't play to his strengths, unlike something like Tango and Cash or Demolition Man. The only pluses are seeing Stallone trying to belt out the song "Drinkenstein" while wearing a goofy outfit of a ten-gallon cowboy hat and the upholstery of a 1976 Davenport that was dyed puke. Hilarious.
Bob Clark just doesn't seem inspired to deliver a comedy that is truly funny, just thinking that Stallone singing is funny enough.
Moving to the DVD itself, the picture and sound quality are pretty decent enough, but nothing the write home about. The picture is clean and stable enough, with the dark scenes showing an uptick in film grain, but is otherwise a clean picture, surprised that it looks this good despite the critical and box office failure of the film almost 40 years ago. The sound is, again, decent, but not enough to rock the house off the foundation. The 2.0 track feels like stereo well enough, and the dialogue and songs come through well, but a nice 5.1 remaster could've helped with the songs a bit.
The true failure of the DVD is the lack of meaningful extras, with the trailer the only thing included. An interview or a commentary would be nice, but this is all we get.
Overall, it's a bad comedy with a decent picture and sound quality, but the lack of extras really drive home that this one isn't worth it unless you need every Stallone film on your shelves.

A solid sequel, but pales to the original
on July 8, 2020

2008 was a stellar year for movies, in particular comic book films. Hellboy 2, while financially underwhelming due to Batman, was a critical darling and beautifully shot film that deserved way more attention than it got . The Dark Knight was a fantastic and Oscar-worthy film that brought comic book movies to the upper echelons of critical analysis and acclaim. Then there was Iron Man, the major underdog that was the best of both worlds from both films. While the Hulk film did decent, many looked forward to 2010 for the release of the third film in the MCU, and the second Iron Man film. Jon Favreau returns to direct, Robert Downey, Jr. is Iron Man, and managed to get Justin Theroux to write the screenplay. The anticipation was high, but did it meet expectations?
Tony Stark has fully embraced Iron Man at the start of the film (after declaring himself as Iron Man at the end of the first movie) and is riding high on life, or so it seems. Despite a renewed vigor to his company, his Iron Man heroics and a girlfriend with his assistant and now CEO Pepper Potts, he is secretly crumbling. Dying of poisoning from the very thing keeping him alive and the government forcing him to hand over plans to the Stark Suit technology, he is driven himself to alcohol.
Meanwhile in Russia, Whiplash (Mickey Rourke) is a scientist on poverty, with Stark's father ending his father's career as a scientist, creates his own arc power core to create his alter ego, and get revenge. Even a rival businessman, Justin Hammer (Sam Rockwell) is trying his hand to recreate Tony's technology. With everything going on, can Tony survive?
After the first film blew the lid off my tiny bit of expectation I had, the excitement had risen significantly, but it rose too high and the film fails to meet those lofty expectations. There is too much plot in the film, stuffed with at least 5 stories that would be ideal for the sequel. But being forced to release a sequel in two years instead of three really cramps the films style. There are also too many characters stuffed in the film, with no time to really divulge into backstory, or characty or motivations beyond surface level plotting.
The action and effects and acting really do well here, with returning and newcomers really doing well with what they were given to work. The effects have the same quality as before, as do the rest of the technical aspects of the film, no surprise given the massive $200 million budget after the huge blockbuster that was Iron Man. Favreau mananges to make the film flow rather smoothly, despite the many roadblocks, and manages to have a nicely paced 2 hour film. But, the film really needed that extra year to pare down and focus the story and really give is the sequel we deserve. As is, it's an entertaining popcorn movie, but deserves it's spot near the bottom of the list of MCU films.
The original 2010 disc was a stand out, managing to have a terrific picture and sound quality, and being quality demo material. Ten years later, that disc is still fantastic but with the advent of 4k, does it manage to amaze? Much like the film itself, those expectations need to be checked at the door. While the first film had some rather egregious DNR applied, it wasn't the disaster some have been in the past, but expect similar results with IM2. While a sharper and more colorful picture (a 2K DI upscale and some lovely HDR10 usage), it still retains the DNR job to match the look of the third film, for some reason. Audio quality is also affected with the At-mouse design, with some less satisfaction with the bass and it being a few decibels on the loudness factor, it still delivers a fairly punchy soundfield with some nice spacial effects for good measure. Lucky, the original 2010 release is included, with the proper filmic original look and appropriately loud and punchy 7.1 DTS-HD track.
Yet again, Disney manages to take a fantastic 2010 extras package and trim it to almost nothing except what's on disc one. The UHD has no extras, but the include standard BluRay includes the audio commentary by Jon Favreau and a featurette taking a look inside the SHIELD vault. An amazing assortment of featurettes, a 4-part, full-length making-of and more are stripped for this release, and even the digital version strips some of these as well. Luckily, the BluRay is very easy to find and fairly reasonable to purchase.
As a film, it's not very good, but it's still a fun ride, just keep your expectations in check. That, too, goes for quality of UHD disc and the lack of the bonus disc from the original Paramount release. Still, it is worth it to have, but wait until there is a sale, or at least get the 3-disc BluRay if possible, it's that good.

A classic jumps to 4k with a nice metal suit
on July 7, 2020

Comic book films in 2008 were still on unfirm ground, in terms of popularity amongst audiences and critics. Ever since the seemingly one-two punch of critical and box-office failures Steel and Batman & Robin, comic book movies were largely avoided like the plague in the Cineplex and the studio board rooms. Blade released the very next year and did well at the box office though malnourished with some critics, but it was enough to get some more projects off the ground.
X-Men, Spider-Man, Hellboy and Batman Begins all helped lift comic book films into new heights, despite the majority of films based on comics released between 2000-2007 were utterly forgettable at best to cinematic infamy at it's worst. But around the time when Fantastic Four and Elektra were disappointing audiences with their underwhelming films, Marvel planted the seeds that would sow the most popular films over the next decade, the legendary MCU. But I didn't think it would work, like at all. I didn't think that an interconnected universe with various comic book characters would appeal to the average Joe. I mean the most hyped film for me in 2008 was The Dark Knight, and I figured that would kill any chances of major lasting power to the MCU, despite a 2 month release difference between those two films. I also figured that hiring past his prime Robert Downey, Jr. and the director of Elf, Jon Favreau, were follies of epic proportions.
May 2008 came around and audiences and critics were floored by their love of the newest hot property in town, Iron Man. Most people around that time didn't even know that Tony Stark/Iron Man was a comic book character, they probably knew the Black Sabbath song more than the comics. He didn't have the same recognition as others such as Batman and Spider-Man, but Marvel managed to make the film work.
Tony Stark is a genius-playboy-philanrhropist-billionaire weapon manufacturer overseas in Afghanistan demonstrating the latest in Stark technology. After a successful demo, his convoy is attacked by the Ten Rings terrorist group, seriously injuring Stark and killing the rest. The group save Stark from certain death by jerry-rigging a car battery powering a magnet that is keeping the shrapnel from his attack from plunging into his heart. He is ordered to build them a bomb that will kill thousands of people. Partnering with a fellow prisoner/scientist, he decides to build a suit to aid in their escape.
After a bittersweet, yet successful, escape, Stark ends his weapon making ways and decides to don the mantle of Iron Man. Trying to balance the tightrope act of protecting his identity as Iron Man, his growing relationship with assistant Pepper Potts (Gywnetth Paltrow) and growing trouble with Stark CEO Obidiah Stane (Jeff Bridges), Ten Rings and the US government, he must do whatever it takes to be Iron Man.
I had opted to pass on seeing this in theaters, decidedly waiting on the DVD to come in from Netflix, and view it on my TV. To say I was thrilled with the movie, was an absolute shock! I mean I had saw that everyone loved it, and did amazing box office, but I still was skeptical that it could be that good. Man, I was floored by how the film was that good, and still love it today.
Downey, Jr. was the key reason the film worked, that and impressive direction from Favreau, despite never having helmed anything of this scope or calibre. They were a perfect symphony of playing the right notes with the right set of instruments at the correct time and rhythm band pitch. The casting was very impressive, as is the sound, special effects, camera work, set and sound design. The only negative was the screenplay. It wasn't finished before filming, had a fairly standard issue plot, but with the comedic instincts of Favreau, he insisted upon improv, and it works! This film is a great start to the MCU and is a must see for any fans of action or comic book films.
The original 2008 DVD and BluRay had some amazing discs are the time, when it came to picture band sound quality, the BluRay especially being a demo worthy disc. Over the course of ten years, the release changed hands from Paramount to Disney, and it kinda scared me, honestly. Disney has grown particularly stingy to extras, has had some still prevalent audio tinkering that requires a change to your audio set-ups and have even used some less-than-ideal DNR to reduce film grain on their 4k discs. Unfortunately, the Disney touch has struck again. The 4k disc carries only the film on the disc, and at first, it looks like a good picture. But then, you start noticing that it looks oddly smoothed over, like it was a digitally shot film. That'd be okay, except this was shot on 35mm film, so it doesn't look as I feel it should. There is still grain present, but it's largely frozen in place on scenes, but luckily the details are still intact. Skin, costumes, sets and colors all benefit from the increased resolution (A 2K DI, so it's an upscaled image) and the HDR10 makes it pop when it's well-lit and colorful. The shadow and blacks are also very nicely resolved and do not suffer from any noticeable crush. Still, I hate how Disney scrubbed the grain away just to make it fall in line with the look of Iron Man 3 (shot digitally, of course). But all is not lost, as the original 2008 disc is included and still looks gorgeous and filmic, as it should! Yes, it's in 1080p, but it upscaled nicely on a 4k tv, though the pleasant HDR10 was missed. The audio has the infamous "At-mouse" sound, that being a Dolby Atmos track, but it's still a nice listen. After turning up the volume a bit, it starts to rock the house with a lovely soundfield that takes advantage of the 11.1 surround sound and sounds relatively nice, despite that flaw. The standard blue still carries the terrific 5.1 DTS-HD track and still packs punch without a need for adjustments!
Moving to the extras are also an irritating time, as Disney dropped Disc 2 of the excellent (and OOP, yet easy to find, Paramount 2-disc set) extras disc and just give us the stuff that was on the original single disc. Included is BluRay Live capabilities, an interactive museum of Iron Man suits, and deleted scenes. Despite it having released over a decade ago, it would've been nice of Disney to have Favreau record an audio commentary track for the 10 year anniversary, or at least get the love commentary recorded at an expo 12 years ago. Heck, I would've accepted just the second disc from the original set, but Disney is charging a premium just for a flawed 4k disc and no new extras on disc or even any old extras. Luckily, the digital copy included, does have the missing extras and a brief, all-new featurette, but it's all in vain.
It is worth it to own Iron Man, but until a proper 4k release can be had, I'd stick with the standard BluRay for the time being. Unless it's on sale, then by all means snatch it up.

A fun game for the entire family!

Ever since that fateful day in 2004 when The Lego Star Wars game was released on 6th generation consoles, a franchise was born. Not just relegated to the popular toy line (there were games in the past that were popular, just not on the level of LSW) and DTV movies based on the Bionicle line of figures, this was a series of games here to stay. The potent combo of the creative building tools and possibly the most popular pop culture series of all time proved irresistible to kids and adults. This success gave way to more bricksets related to film and TV, more DTV films, actual films and, of course, a veritable tidal wave of Lego (insert movie here) games.
This one is based on the really good, but not good as, sequel, based on one of my favorite films of the past decade. Following the plot of the film rather closely, this is a game that has stuck to what has pretty much worked for 15 years or so, warts and all. You are one of several Lego characters from the film, where you collect every stray brick from destroying various environmental objects, enemies and buildings, and build your way to the end of the game.
The formula gas gotten rather old and somewhat stale over the decade and a half, with Lego City Undercover being the last real refreshing title, almost a decade earlier, but it's still a charming game to play. It's funny, has some brightly colored environs and character designs, simple gameplay for the younger kids out there and plenty of collectables to gather. Most of the voice cast from the film return to breathe some life into the game and add a boost for adults to enjoy.
Tie-in games usually are largely awful and practically died for a few years around the end of Gen 7 consoles, but this one is good enough to have a space on your shelf.
