Joe,
It may depend on which file formats you're trying to view, and how the television is finding your device. Try moving your media to a USB thumb-drive (MSC Class Device) and see if your videos are viewable that way. Or if you can, set your iPad/Phone device to act as a media device rather than a phone device when connected via USB. Sometimes this option is possible, sometimes it is not - this depends on your OS version.
I've included a list of video files to this response that can be found on Page 10 of the owner's manual. If you can, record in these formats so you can play them back.
