thanks for the answer, but lenovo site states 16 max and that the ram is soldered. obviously if 4 is soldered with two banks that is not correct. Is it maybe 8 soldered and one empty? LENOVO EXPERT PLEASE ANSWER

This model is not user upgradable. A certified technician must do all of the work, so as to not void the warranty. There is 4GB onboard, soldered. There is one open slot and the maximum RAM is 16GB that the motherboard can support. Obviously, the realistic maximum has to be 12GB, because there is no 12GB RAM card available.

is the the ram soldered or not? I've read both on lenovos site so I dont know why I expect an accurate answer here:(

This model is not user upgradable. A certified technician must do all of the work, so as to not void the warranty. The reason for the conflicting answers is because the answer is "both". There is 4GB of RAM "onboard" the motherboard (soldered), but there is also a RAM slot on the device as well. The maximum RAM this system can support is 16GB. A certified technician can add more RAM to this system.
