"Hard Drive" is a standard hard drive with plates like a DVD disc used to store data. Obviously, the standard hard drive has moving parts. A "Solid State Hard Drive" stores data within transistors. There are no moving parts and the recall of data from the transistor is much faster than the recall of data from a standard hard drive disc. The cost per megabyte of storage space is less for the standard drive versus the solid state drive. The solid state drive is much faster, generates less heat and has no moving parts to fail. Although data can still be lost from a solid state hard drive, it is much less common than with a standard hard drive.
