Would this laptop be of better usage for my son who recently started college? Or would another brand such as Chromebook OS or Macbook laptops be more ideal choices?

This is a very powerful system and very versatile. We recommend you check with the school your son will be attending. Each of the systems you mention, this one, the Chromebook and the MacBook are all different operating systems: Windows 10, Chrome and Apple OS, respectively. One system may be recommended over the other by the school. I would check with them first.
