We needed a quick and reliable solution to securely backup and transfer data between computers at work. This fit the bill for both needs. We quickly copied just over a TB to the drive and securely transferred it to the destination computer that required the backup files. It also powers itself off of the USB 3.0 connection so no additional cables are needed.

The application needs to run for longer than 8 hours, continuous, so it needs to be able to be charged from a separate port from the USB.
The USB port is not used to charge the Surface. It has a separate proprietary port for charging the device. If you need additional USB ports, you can always purchase a USB hub to expand it.
