Best Streaming Device

It has taken a while but I think its safe to say the Nvidia Sheild is the best streaming device you can buy today. But that doesn't make it the best choice for everyone. I am not a cord cutter. I do have a cable connection but I don't use the cable company's set top box. I have a cable card that streams all but premium channels to my Shield. Its not as simple as using the set top box but I really only watch news and sports so it works great for that. I push one button on my single Shield remote and it turns on the Shield, Receiver and TV. Its just that simple. From there is have TV and all of the Google TV apps right at my finger tips. I will keep the cable bill to a minimum and I have tons of content, more than I could ever watch. Setting this all up is not hard and its only the use of the cable card that makes it a bit more complicated and a non-issue if you don't use a cable card. Another issue with the Shield is it does have gaming features some may not need but they are not required to fully use the device. My take, if you are a cord cutter or can settle with having non premium cable content on your TV this is the device to get. The rumor is the Shield will be able to access premium content in the future but don't buy for what a device might do buy it for what it can do. I have two Shields now and I give Nvidia kiddos for keeping the device current to the latest version of Android.

Excellent Value Electric Shaver

The Panasonic ES-RT17-K is a very affordable and quality shaver. It is a two blade wet and dry shaver in a very nice feeling design. Panasonic has many models of shavers from a budget version like this to all the way up much more expensive models. I recently had one of their four blade travel shavers that finally gave up after many years of daily use. I don’t travel as often so I just started using a razor with the intent of getting an electric razor again someday. Well I am back to electric and I like the change. And this a the perfect shaver to start with. It is very affordable and has a 2 year parts and labor warranty. The recommended replacement parts cycle is, System outer foil, once every year and Inner blades, one every two years. So you have a great affordable razer that the Panasonic doesn’t even recommend any parts replacements for at least a year.
The shaver performs great but the included accessories could have been done better. The charging stand has no power cord. This might not be a problem in some bathrooms but it is in mine. I have two available plugs. Because the shaver sits in the charging cradle which is then plugged into the wall your space options might be limited. In my home one plug is close to the sink so you could bump into it. My second power outlook is blocked because of a medicine cabinet and the final height of the shaver in the cradle. And one final gripe is the included travel pouch. I appreciate they included one but the power cradle and shaver won’t fit in it together. So plan on packing the power cradle separately. Still with the value here if you are looking for a very good shaver at an affordable price this is hard to beat.

The update to the well received Sony’s STR-1070 is here and I think it has been worth the wait. The big news here is the addition of Dolby Atmos and DTS:X support. So for those lucky home theater fans that can add the additional speakers, they now have an affordable Sony to drive their smiles. Like the 1070 the 1080 fully supports 4K HDR and a long list of music file types. Everything is here for a modern home theater experience for now and well into the future. From my time with the receiver everything has worked very well. I did find the sound a little on the bright side but there are plenty of sound options so you can shape the sound to be warmer if that is more to your liking. If you not familiar with the all of the features in the STR-1080 then you're in for a long list. Highlights to me is the full Chromecast music streaming, not new to the 1080 but glad it was retained. I can walk in the door and pull up my streaming app and have music playing without ever touching anything but my phone.

Sony recommends you install their SongPal app which has been renamed the Sony Music Center. You will want install the app as it does help with some of the settings on the receiver. One big disappointment that is very important to how I use my music library is it seems the sleep timer in the app is broke. You can set a timeout on the receiver but its global and starts the timer once the receiver is on. You won’t find a dedicated sleep button on the included remote. I encourage Sony to keep development of this app and fix and add additional features. I would like to just use the Sony app for all my music but it’s basic focus is the receiver and then link to your separate music app. The possibility of whole house audio is here but you will have to spend sometime setting it up.
As much as I like this receiver I was expecting a better onscreen interface. The build quality of the remote is poor at best and it is very limited in its functions. In this receiver class you should get a full featured remote but that’s not found here. The onscreen interface starts out in the Home screen which is a dedicated button on the remote. This will be your launching screen to change receiver inputs, streaming music and radio stations, custom presets, sound effects, 2nd receiver zone controls, access your local network and the advanced settings screen. It works well but the option to play from a network folder and the advanced settings screen look dated and out of place for a receiver released in 2017. I was finally hoping for a real music player to access my saved network music files but it is a limited folder search without the advanced playback options it should support. The receiver setup was quick and maybe easier than any I have done. Sony uses a stereo mic so when you run the speaker calibration you don’t have to place the mic all over the room. Just place it in the most common sitting area run the wizard. For me, most of the speaker setup was correct. I did however have to change my speakers from large to small. This is a common problem with most receiver calibration routines so I knew to check. It had no issues connecting to my network from both its wired and wireless options. I think for most users this receiver has all the options you would need. For the higher end home theatres a step up to more speaker support might be where this receiver is limited. The Sony only supports two ceiling speakers for Dolby Atmos and DTS:X decoding. In a small room this can still bring the joy of the rain falling on your head. Larger home theaters might want to have more speaker support. Overall this is a very nice home theater receiver that brings excellent audio and enough connection options to keep the dedicated busy but still easy for the novice to match up to that new 4K TV and its growing content.

If you're a person who wants a real nicely built portable bluetooth speaker the Sony has a lot going for it. The build quality is very nice with that high tech rubber coating on the outside. It feels very good in the hand and has a little weight to it. With the IPX5 water resistance it is perfect for the student, traveler or anyone who wants a backpack size wireless speaker. Because it really is sized to be portable I wish Sony had included some type of travel case. As it is you get the speaker, a USB charging cable and quick start guide. Sony claims 12 hours of battery life. I can’t confirm that but I have been several days and many hours of listening after the first charge so they could be right. The bluetooth pairing was a single button affair. NFC is also present for those who might want to have someone else play from their device by tapping to pair. Now how does such a small speakers sound even with a subwoofer and bass boost, well sorry to say just average. The speaker does support the Sony’s LDAC bluetooth wireless standard. This should improve audio quality but honestly most phones won’t have support for it. So you would need the Sony’s Music Center (SongPal) app. This app is available for both Android and Apple phones. Overall for most listening conditions a good bluetooth connection on a fairly new phone will be fine with most any music player. Sony does put a 3.5mm RCA connector on the back so if you happen to have the right cable you can play with most any device. And then there’s the light show. In this case on the XB20 Black model it has a only one color of white LEDs that seem to try to stay in sync with the beat. This is very easy to turn on and off. I think overall the whole package works well. I am using it daily to replace my monitor speakers and I will be taking it with me when I travel.

I have a Ninja coffee maker and I have gotten to really like it. I had mostly stopped drinking coffee in the morning but that coffee maker is quick and makes great coffee. So I got back to having a cup in the morning then I thought why not get the correct cup for the hour drive into work. This cup is very nice and works great there is just one problem. It is so large it takes almost two hands to hold it. That and since it does such a good job keeping the coffee hot you really have to be careful using it while you drive. I would like to give it five stars because what it does it does very well. But if you looking for a cup to take on your drive to work this might not be the best choice. I use it while I am gaming and for that it works great. But I use a much smaller cup for my drive.

The Nvidia 1060, 1070 and 1080 series of gaming video cards hold up very well almost a year after there release. The 1070 is an especially good value if your playing game on higher resolution monitors. The 1060 is more for 1080p gaming where the 1070 is best suited for 2K gaming. EVGA has always been one of the most respected vendor of the Nvidia products. I currently am running a 34" widescreen monitor at 3440x1440 and I am very satisfied. I replaced two GTX 980s and the difference in performance is almost exactly the same., Plus single card gaming is much simpler and I am using much less power so I get much less heat. I am very pleased with the performance and build quality. Its nice to be able to get the newer cards from Best Buy.

Dell monitors usually impress me for their build quality. This one has a very pleasing image and very thin bezels. The stand looks good but has no height adjustments. If your looking for a nice desktop monitor that has a very nice image quality out of the box this does that. If your picky go look at the Ultra series as it does have a few more business features. I have had this Asus for almost two months now and I love gaming on it. I had a 40" 4K monitor before this one. I could never push 60 fps on the 40" but with a GTX 1070 I get 100 fps second on the same games with this G-sync monitor. For gaming it great but for office work the shorter height and curve is not as good. But I game more then I work on documents at home so this is a better choice for me. Its expensive and this year I think we will have some better choice but for now this is one of the top two widescreen gaming monitors available.
I am taking a star away because of the lack of connection options. It should have had at least two display port connections. I don't need the second one now but it would have been nice at this price point to have that option.

The Linksys nodes have two 5Ghz radios to send and receive at the same time. The nodes will seamlessly connect you to the best connection automatically and you can add additional nodes. The Linksys Velop Mesh WiFi system is impressive in the box but better out. The packaging shows real care however the included setup instructions were minimal at best. I vote for a little more information just in case please. What Linksys has done is make the setup so easy you really don’t need a manual. You download the Android or IOS app and it pretty much walks you through setting up the first node. You have two choices, you connect a lan cable from the first node directly to your internet modem or to your modem/router device. I chose the first option and connected directly to the modem bypassing my existing WiFi router. Other nodes only need to be placed in an open location and plugged into a power outlet. I had the three nodes connected within about 30 minutes.There is a second lan connection on the bottom of each node that you can pass through to a wired devices or switch. The node is now acting as your router and you manage router options through the smartphone app. This will be fine for most people and worked without issues. I wanted to retain my current router and just replace my WiFi. My WiFi router is in an upstairs bedroom closet so although I don’t have bad WiFi, I didn’t have great WiFi. So I reset the nodes and reran the setup and this time chose to connect to my current WiFi router. In that setup my current network was retained and I gained the use of the nodes. You connect your devices to the nodes just the same as any WiFi using the name and password you created during the setup process. In this way I now have a two nodes upstairs and one down. No more WiFi coming out of my closet.
In my testing I could not find a location that didn’t max out my internet download speeds anywhere in my 1,800 SqFt two story home. The technology in each node is actually quite impressive. Six antennas, the very latest wireless chipsets and technology. In fact although you will get an increased WiFi performance from any connected device it is the newest devices that can take advantage of the best possible performance of these nodes. You do have to pay for this level of performance and technology but that’s also true for the top of the line WiFi Routers. Today, if you want the very fastest WiFi in your whole home this is a very real option. It’s very fast, simple to setup, the nodes actually look very good on a table and I do like the automatic software updates. If you must have the very best WiFi the Linksys Velop should be on your short list. I would like to have more advanced setting options in the smartphone app but that's just a preference I am learning to get over. My wife really likes the look and I really like the performance.

Wireless home security camera’s made easy

I have had home security cameras setup from time to time when working from home. Since I have an upstairs office I was always concerned that I could have had someone break in my house and not even know it while I was working. I park my car in the garage so it would be easy to assume no one was home. I tried various indoor camera setups, some placed inside windows but there was always a compromise. Poor image quality, stress on my wireless network to stream and poor software implementations. The cost of quality outdoor cameras was just too steep. IP cameras such as the Arlo were always very pricey and I didn’t want to have my house wired for the older analog cameras. I tend to be a DYI person because I like to know how things work and how to fix them if there’s a problem.
Once you open the box on the Ario system you will find two very nice cameras, a separate base station, two rechargeable batteries plus mounting hardware. I have the two pack but Netgear offers other packages with more cameras. The two pack in not cheap. You do have to pay for them. The good news is if you price high quality IP camera these are very competitive especially as a turnkey solution. I use an Android phone and once I installed the app from the Google play store all I had to do was setup an account. After that is was very simple to connect the cameras to the base station. The whole setup took all of 15 minutes from installing the app to having the cameras working on my phone. Since these can be both inside and outside cameras I decided to mount them outside. This was the one place I could never use in my prior attempts to have a security system.
The cameras support two way communication however sound from the outside camera if you were going to actually talk to someone, is to low to be very useful. Not a concern for me but if that's something you want from your setup this might not be there yet. It could also be fixed by a firmware update but nothing during the setup reported needing one and I review what you get not what you might get. The image quality is very good for up close. As you view from a farther distance it does tend to lose some quality. This is probably due to the high field of view, 130° that the cameras provides and I would say in most cases this is a better trade off. For most cases such as someone at the front door the image quality is very good. The cameras support motion detection and can be setup to record when they detect motion. This is a very needed feature since you can record video that can stored either locally on USB drives, two are supported, and connect to the back of the base station or on the Netgear website. The website recordings can be shared, downloaded or deleted as needed. If you have the Ario app open on your phone it will vibrate when motion is detected. I signed up for the free service but they also have paid plans. The free service supports up to five cameras and cloud storage for up to 7 days of recording. Netgear claims the cameras are weatherproof but the battery compartment might not be. So I mounted them where I felt they had the best chance to stay dry. Battery life is claimed to be up to two or three months. Time will tell on that one but you do get an indicator on the charge level of the batteries when viewing from them and they can be setup to run powered if that’s an issue. Night vision is also very good but I was most impressed with how the base station works. You plug it into your router or any available network jack. And the cameras only talk to it and don’t use your other wireless network. I tried several different locations for the base station and got good signals pretty much wherever I tired it. So I ended up putting it next to my router in a closet and it is showing a full signal, very impressive. Finally there is a smart siren that can be activated manually or setup to trigger remotely. This is a serious siren and will definitely get attention if triggered.
This is a very good camera security system for the cost. Netgear is a leader in networking for both consumer and enterprise, they know what they're doing. The product is feature rich, easy to install and it's one screw to mount. They have done a great job with the software which runs on both Apple and Android or in a desktop browser. I could easily recommend this for someone looking for a DIY some security system. You can add up to five cameras to the two pack but if you think you need more cameras it might be best to buy them in the 3 or 4 pack. The individual cameras bought separately are much more expensive than if you buy them in the larger pack. Overall a great product and if you feel the need there is always the Geek Squad warranty to keep you protected. Mounted outside it's a small price to pay for the protection offered.

Can you add a SSD or NVME to the 528? Specs show an internal SSD PCIE! No pictures of the insides or specs anywhere online. Also looks like a 4 or 5 TORX for the back cover. Two screws near the hinge look like they are separate form the back cover????

The Pixel 5G is an Android phone and not a Windows phone. There is no new phones using Windows and hasn't been for years. The most current phone from Microsoft uses the Android operating system.

The lack of review might be due to it being a very new product. It can be found on the Turtle Beach website. The ear cups are a very soft pleather. You are not likely to see full leather ear cups at this price range or even higher. The mic is removable and the mute button is on the left headphone. The mic works very well.

Is it 5.1 or 7.1
It is neither. It is a full 3D sound environment and not separate channels. You can find this feature in some higher end headphones. It seems to work well but its not your average 5.1 or 7.1 surround channel that we think of. Go look for Waives NX 3D audio to find out more about this technology.

Using the USB connection it should work. But I won't say for sure since I haven't tried it.

It works very good on Discord. The mic is very good on this headset.
