Versatile device for your workout

The JAXJOX Smart Kettlebell is an interesting concept. I never really knew about the Kettlebell work out concept. Normally you have a couple different Kettlebells of different weights, this particular model has a mechanism in it that will change the amount of weight adding and subtracting plates from inside the Kettlebell. You can set weight increments of six pounds each starting at 12lbs and going up to 42lbs.
The kettle bell comes with a corresponding mobile app that can be used to track your exercise routine (connecting via Bluetooth). The app also integrates with Apple health (iOS version). In some cases it didn’t track my work out, this was annoying at times but I found that if you placed the kettle bell securely on the base it beeped, and most of the time your stats registered. Sometimes this was a challenge, the base also serves as a recharger for the tracking mechanism. Place the kettlebell on the base to change and display the weight, you change the weight by using thr up and down arrow buttons with a small display next to the buttons. You also access a menu system through the display to pair the kettle bell to your mobile device. The app had a few interesting functions along with a few different instructional videos. I actually found that if you just did a generic search on YouTube for kettlebell workouts you found a better selection than the ones in the app.
The hardware is of high-quality, having a Kettlebell is useful, especially useful in small apartments or smaller rooms where you don’t want to have a bunch of different weights. I see the kettlebell as something useful to maintain fitness level in a pinch, I don’t think it is really meant for heavy workouts.
Overall I am pretty happy with the kettlebell it’s good for a work out in a pinch something of medium intensity.
Pros:
- Convenient, compact, versatile
- well built
- Decent mobile app to track your fitness routine
- mechanism is pretty ingenious
Cons:

- sometimes difficult to connect doesn’t always track your work out

top of the line android tablet
on October 2, 2019

The Galaxy Tab S6 10.5 tablet is an appealing Android 9.0 Pie tablet from Samsung, it comes with 128GB of storage and 6GB or RAM. The 2560 x 1600 resolution Super AMOLED screen is bright and displays deep blacks. This is one of the best screens I have seen on a tablet. The system is very responsive and quick, helped by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor. Physically the tablet is super thin and light with a brushed aluminum case. If I have one complaint it is a little difficult to hold without a case, though given its lightweight it was not overly tiring to hold. I recommend getting a case/slash keyboard which is not included. The tablet is marketed as a potential laptop replacement and Samsung includes a “DEX” mode which supposedly provides a desktop like experience. I took this tablet on a long weekend trip instead of my laptop and it did the job, although I am not sure it could replace the full functionality of a laptop. The Android operating system is OK, but frankly does not compare to the iPad experience. One of the items included is a multifunction pen which can be used to handwrite on the tablet and for use with applications that require precision control. The pen attaches to a recessed section on the back of the tablet, magnets kind of hold it in place, however it is easily knocked off without a case to keep it in place. I found it a bit annoying, however you can also attach it magnetically to each vertical edge (long side). The unit also has a slot for a Micro SD card, but no headphone jack, you can also unlock the system via a fingerprint or face recognition. Camera wise it has an 8 megapixel front facing camera and a 13 megapixel rear facing camera, although neither has a flash. I found the quality of the rear facing camera to be very good for a tablet, it also takes 4k video. My complaint is it did not seem to want to connect to my Android TV via Chromcast to playback content I had taken with the camera. Casting YouTube to my TV worked flawlessly though. In addition, the tablet has four decent sounding speakers.
Setup of this tablet was very easy, I have an older Galaxy Tab A and easily migrated my Apps and Settings over to this new tablet when I logged into my Google account, was up and running quickly. Overall this tablet was a substantial improvement over my previous Galaxy Tab A (2016). I liked the addition of the USB-C jack for charging and high speed connectivity. I am eager to get the keyboard and case for this unit (when it is reasonably priced) to be able to evaluate the potential of this tablet to truly act (at least in a pinch) as a laptop.
Pros:
- Great looking bright screen with a high level of contrast
- Super quick processor for everyday tasks
- Thin and well built
- USB-C
- Battery life (I got about 16 hours out of a full charge)
Cons
- A bit slippery and difficult form factor to hold
- No flash with an otherwise very good camera
- S-Pen stylus although functional could use a stronger magnet to adhere it to the back of the tablet.
- No headphone jack

small unit, basic battery backup
on September 21, 2019
Posted by: Bappy
from Garner, NC
I have multiple APC Battery Backup systems, so when the battery on my larger capacity unit wore out I decided to go with several smaller capacity units for a few different use cases. This unit is going to protect and offer backup power to my Wifi Router and cable modem. My security system and remote battery powered cameras rely on a steady network connection, this unit fit the bill in being able to provide power for my networking equipment. Every time I have a power interruption, my cable modem would have to power cycle back on and boot up, reconnecting to my internet provider. Now those small power interruptions no longer interrupt my internet connectivity. This unit provides just enough battery backup to keep small lower power equipment running. It has 4 widely spaced plugs which provide interrupted power for a few minutes, with two other outlets with just surge suppression capabilities. Given the small battery size you need to use this unit appropriately, do not expect to power equipment with higher wattage requirements with this system. However it performs within the bounds of its capacity. The unit comes in ship mode so the battery is in an inactive state. On the bottom of the unit there is a car fuse like tab that needs to be plugged into a fitting in the bottom of the unit to connect the battery to the power outputs. Fairly simple and much easier than older models where you had to slide off the battery door and connect two connectors. Very easy new design.
Pros:
- easy, reliable power
- quick setup
Cons:
- small capacity
- unit has a real plastic, manufactured odor. Let it air out, it goes away after a few days.

Decent entry level air fryer

This is an entry-level air fryer which does a decent job and cooking things without oil. All the controls are manual which makes it less complicated. As for air fryer it’s a great concept and it usually works out pretty well on most foods especially things that traditionally would be deep-fried. Unit is well-built black in color and has a decent size basket although one could wish for more capacity. Clean up is easy with the nonstick surfaces of the basket just soap and water is good enough to clean thIs unit.

Looks good & functional

The GE 125 Can/31 Bottle Beverage and Wine Center is about the size of a medium size mini fridge. This one is dressed up a bit with black metal casing and a stainless steel door frame with handle and full view glass panel front. It includes five wooden (oak) grates/shelves, two half shelfs (one for the base of the inside of the unit, another half shelf which combines with the compressor hump, which forms another full shelf and three other full shelves which can slide in and out. The wooden grates/shelves add a nice touch and seem like they will function well. There is a two digit LED which displays temperature. There are also multiple buttons used to set temp, turn light on or off and change between Celsius and Fahrenheit. The light is one of those LED bulbs which look like an old style filament type, it lights the inside of the fridge well and provides another nice touch to this good looking unit. Functionality wise the fridge is easily loaded and maintains temperature well. The compressor cycles on and off and is fairly quiet, producing a bit of heat, when the refrigerator is running you don't have to catch it (old joke). The manual say this fridge can be installed within a cabinet if needed. I have mine on the floor, however at that angle you really can't see the LED temperature display if this matters to you. Overall this is a pretty nice beverage "center" which would look at home in a cabinet, on top of the back of a bar or just standing alone on the floor in your living room, den or mancave or she shack (to ripoff an insurance commercial).
Pros:
- Looks good
- Maintains beverage temperature
- Inside light/glass front on stainless steel door frame
- lockable so others or minor can't get to your stash

Cons:
- Light on or off, no apparent door switch which turns it on and off
- Door came slightly misaligned
- Temperature display not readable when on floor without opening the door

Lightweight and they sound good.

I've been looking for a decent pair of truly wireless earbuds to use when taking walks. These are not high powered workouts, so sweat resistance is not a priority. However when I saw the new Vista model from Jaybird/Logitech I figured I'd give them a try. I previously had a pair from a well known speaker company, however they were larger than these and frankly unwieldy, always feeling like they were going to fall out of my ears. Not the Jaybird Vista set, these fit in my ear nicely and were super lightweight, barely noticable. As for the sound, which is really the priority here, one word RICH. Aurally they performed, with thick distortion free sound. The downloadable app was handy to set sound profiles and was useful. Also I liked the ability to quick charge them, which they state the five minutes or charging produces an hour worth of playback. I really didn't measure that stat, but they do seem to charge quick - I didn't quite get the 6 hours of play time is stated, but it was close. Overall I am very happy with these sport earbuds, they are functional, durable and sound good.
Pros:
- Rich sound
- Lightweight
- Charging time and 10 hour charge case
- IPX7 sweat and waterproof
Cons
- No active noise cancelling

nice unit, mobile device connectivity has issues
on July 19, 2019
Posted by: Bappy
from Garner, NC
First the good, the NextBase 522GW dashcam is a well built, fairly compact unit with a full 3” inch (960 x 480) touch screen. Video quality is very good and it records up to 1440p (2560 x 1440 @ 30 frames per second) or will do standard HD resolution (1920 x 1080 @ 60 frames per second). Sixty frames per second comes in handy in this use case as video taken really works well with the driving playback experience. Now higher resolution or frames per second video lead to large files and one of the annoying things (at least from my perspective) is you only have the option of recording 1 or 3 minute videos. For a long trip, if you want to review portions of your trip you have to navigate through a bunch of files, which can get a bit tedious, but smaller files might make more sense (since they are easier to download via mobile apps, more on that later).
The camera is feature laden, with built in GPS which records telemetry such as coordinates and speed (both of which can be configured to display on the recordings). It also has a shock sensor and some unique S.O.S. features which can be configured to notify emergency services (via your smartphone) if you have an accident. Given what I describe later, I would not depend on that function at all.
In any case two different mounts are provided, one of the suction cup variety and one that glues to your windshield. The bracket separates from the body of the camera (the power plugs into the bracket) and kinda snaps in place with the help of a magnet. You would think this would make the camera easy to remove, however not so much as I had problems removing it from the windshield with the unit mounted behind my rear view mirror (perhaps there is a way to perform some ninja wrist move).
There are mobile apps (iOS, Android) and a PC based app, all seem to have some real cool features. However, I had major issues with the stability of the iOS app on my iPhone 6s. Numerous times I had problems pairing them, with connections failing, pairing requests not appearing (or the searching for accessories prompt on iOS). A firmware upgrade downloaded after first connecting (and hopefully they will release an update that makes the camera more stable).
While the unit records high resolution video they produce fairly large size files, this makes them impractical to access in any way, shape or form from my iPhone. Videos downloads (even when connecting via “high speed WiFi”) are sloooow and unstable. The connection constantly drops and reestablishing them is a challenge. I deleted Bluetooth connections and reinstalled the app on my iPhone numerous times. None of this improved the functionality in these areas. I had better results with my Galaxy Tab A tablet and the android app, videos still downloaded slow but I was able to get a few videos off the dashcam. The only real successful way for me to get videos off this dashcam was to remove the microSD card and play via my PC.
There is so much to like about this unit, however the integration with mobile devices is not one of them. Hopefully there will be a firmware update for this unit or updates in the mobile apps that make the advanced functions that require connectivity to a mobile device more stable and frankly useable.
Pros:
- Great video, including 1440p 30fps or 1080p 60fps (and lower res formats)
- Well built
- Polarizing lens for clarity
- Clear touch screen (speed can be displayed as a screen saver)
- time lapse feature
Cons:
- Unstable connectivity to my iPhone 6s
- Slow video download speeds
- Quirky

well built, questionable port choices
on July 17, 2019
Posted by: Bappy

This lightning dock connects to your computer via USB-C dongle. It has two HDMI 4k ports has two USB A ports, one a 3.0 version and another 2.0. Not sure why they wouldn't make the 3.0 offering at least a 3.1 version. Also included is a Gigabit Ethernet port. All ports are fully functional and I had no problems using any and all at them at same time (although I did not have more that one 4k monitor to attach). I just wish the choices were a bit more varied, the main reason you purchase a docking station like this is to have a variety of ports. I know Display Port and DVI are is a pretty dead standards, but it might make sense to have one of them and possibly a USB-C passthrough and any of the various forms of USB mini A, mini B ports. Regardless, this is a well built docking station but I can't help but think it is not the most versatile.

A Smart TV that deserves a better display
on July 5, 2019
Posted by: Bappy
from Garner, NC
The Hisense 50" LED H8F 2160p Smart 4K UHD TV is pretty slick looking with a very slim bezel. The casing is solid and has inputs including 4 HDMI, 2 USB, headphone jack, Ethernet and digital audio optical output. The ULED panel includes several higher end capabilities usually found in more upscale models such as HDR picture with local dimming and a wide color gamut. At this price point the TV is very configurable with multiple ways to customize your picture, however the end result is somewhat lackluster.
Playing 4k video varies and is generally pretty good with online streaming services such as Netflix (make sure you have their top tier level of service which offers 4k and Dolby HDR titles) and with the already installed YouTube App. I commented to my wife when I played some 4K YouTube video taken with a camera on a gimble it looked like I was walking through NYC. Streaming from my Network Attached storage of 4k video taken with my iPhone looked very good, but my Canon SX70 superzoom taken video was jerky and demonstrated some digital artifacts during scenes of high contrast and motion. Not sure what the issue is as the same video does not display the same behavior on my Sansung 4k computer monitor or when downscaled to HD on my LG plasma HDTV. I am going to try different settings and tweaks to see if I can improve the issue (such as using a hard wired ethernet connection instead of the built in WiFi) but others have commented about similar issues. Bottom line though at this price point I am not expecting a top of line display.
The TV uses Android TV as its operating system and as such is tightly integrated with the Google Play store. I can say, having a few other smart TVs and streaming devices with different OS's (tvOS, webOS and Roku) Android TV fits somewhere between Roku and AppleTV as my favorite TV experiences.
All the common apps are available via the Google Play store, including the standard Netflix and YouTube apps preloaded (with a dedicated buttons for each on the remote) along with other video based apps such as VLC Player and DS Video (both to access my multimedia collection on my Networked private cloud device/Network Attached Storage) and the Tablo app to access my Tablo over the air device (with the best implementation of the app on any TV platform). Generally speaking the Android TV OS is pretty good interface and speed wise, even though there are some odd things that occur within the interface, especially when configuring logins and things like an IP address (a field which shouldn't accept non numeric values, unless this TV is IPV6 capable).
In any case, I'm pretty happy with the TV and the overall experience. Frankly I would like a better display paired with the TV OS considering all the options (more than are usually available on TVs at this price point).
Pros:
- Price and features
- Android TV OS
- Very intricate picture controls
- App availability
- Voice Integration and setup with Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa
- Decent speakers for a thin TV
Cons:
- Picture quality is mediocre, issues with motion blur and contrast blooming with some sources
- Remote could be backlit
- No native support of the Amazon Prime Video app

decent for a rechargable vacuum
on July 3, 2019
Posted by: Bappy
from Garner, NC
The HOOVER - ONEPWR Blade+ Cordless Stick Vacuum is lightweight and useful. The vacuum is easily assembled in just a few minutes of snapping together various parts. Each of the parts is labeled with a sticker and self-explanatory, “part A goes into part B” instructions. My only complaint regarding assembly and use, is the instruction manual which uses tiny print that is difficult to read. My suggestion is to concentrate on something that is readable instead of trying to cram in a bunch of different languages into the manual.
The rechargeable battery slides into the main portion of the motorized piece of the vacuum and takes about 3 hours to charge. There is an Eco mode which preserves battery life by reducing the power, thus extended the operating time of the unit. The powered brush assembly does a decent job (especially for a wireless unit) and picks up dirt from carpet equal to powered versions. However, one thing that I found annoying is you cannot disable the rotating brush, which would be useful when using on bare floors. In addition, the head of the vacuum is fairly narrow so you need to make many passes over your floor or carpet you are cleaning. Other vacuums (corded versions) usually feel like they are self-propelled, pulling the vacuum along. With this unit there seems to be an odd resistance when going forward and backward as part of the normal cleaning motion. The powerhead also contains a few LEDs which project a bright light over your cleaning service. Overall the dirt collector cup with washable filter is easily emptied and the content after vacuum proves what a good cleaning job the unit does. The vacuum also comes with several attachments, including a brush, edge cleaner along with the powered cleaning head. This yields is a multifaceted cleaning appliance that also can be turned into a powerful hand vac which excels in cleaning carpeted stairs.
Now for some of the downsides, the battery takes a while to charge and at full power lasts about 15 minutes, in Eco mode a bit more. In addition, only using the non-powered attachments yields even more run time, but you sacrifice the usability of the vacuum by doing that.
Overall this is a pretty handy cleaning device but has some inherit limitations. I suspect with a few enhancements this could be much improved unit. If an additional battery was included it would take a little less sting out of the limited battery life.
Pros:
- Does a good job cleaning
- Wireless
- Bright lights which illuminate your cleaning service
Cons:
- Battery life
- Can’t turn brush head off
- Poor, small font assembly guide/operating manual

Read speeds of up to 3,470MB/s offer improved load times, while the M.2 form factor means you can directly plug into the motherboard without extra cabling. Compared to typical 2.5-inch SSDs, this WD_Black SSD fits double the storage density on a single-sided drive, making it suitable for portable builds.

Always know what’s happening at your door with the SimpliSafe Video Doorbell Pro. Its crystal-clear 1080p HD video and 162° field of view give you a clear shot of your property 24/7. Two-way audio lets you hear and speak to unwanted guests (and welcomed ones too) - even when you're not home. Have the SimpliSafe App? The Video Doorbell Pro will send instant alerts whenever someone approaches. And with Smart Person Detection, it can tell the difference between people, vehicles and animals. That means you only get the alerts that matter. Plus, when backed by 24/7 professional monitoring, you’ll have experts who are ready to request emergency dispatch when you need it most. This camera is designed for all weather extremes—so you're still protected in rain and snow. (Compatible with the SimpliSafe Gen 3 security system. Requires Wi-Fi (2.4GHz) and existing wired doorbell setup with mechanical chime and a transformer with 8-24 VAC, 30VA max. Not compatible with digital chimes.)

Does this doorbell allow storage to the local network instead of a cloud server?

no local SD card or transmit capabilities of images.
