functional but could be more
on June 27, 2022
Posted by: Bappy
I am using the Satechi - USB-C Monitor Stand Hub XL for my gaming laptop which I primarily use for video editing purposes. I placed my 28-inch 4K monitor on top of the stand and although the aluminum stand is well built in did seems to have a slight bend even though my monitor only weighs about 17 pounds (the stand is rated for 50 pounds). Perhaps the bend is only an optical illusion, not sure. In any case my slim laptop actually fits underneath the stand and clears the bolted-on expansion hub which was awesome for storage purposes. As for the expansion hub, it connects to your device via USB-C, perfect for my laptop or so I thought. The hub has three USB-A ports and USB-C port, a SD card and Micro SD card reader and a 3.5mm audio jack. A couple of items with the hub that made me wonder about the versatility. The hub does not pass power other than standard USB supplied power, it cannot power peripherals that require additional power (for instance external hard drive). I also would have loved some type of video interface, HDMI would have been awesome, but no I essentially had to use a Satechi USB-C on the go 9 in 1 Multiport Adapter to pass video and daisy chained it to the hub in the stand, this essentially reduces the functionality of the hub. In addition, the micro-SD card slot is a bit tricky to insert and eject cards.
Is the stand usable, absolutely – but the integrated hub not as much due to the issues I mention, bolt on a functional the Satechi USB-C on the go 9 in 1 Multiport Adapter and this stand would be 150% more useful for my purposes.
Pros:
- Built well, color matching well with my black desk and monitor
- Hub functionality
Cons:
- Hub functionality (yes and pro and a con)
- Micro SD card insertion and ejection difficulties
- No USB supplied power for charging or powering more that basic devices.
- No HDMI, DisplayPort or VGA output ports
I would recommend this to a friend!

Simple wireless bluetooth earbuds.

The JVC HA-A3T True Wireless earbuds are a refreshing experience, they are basic wireless all purpose earbuds. No interchangeable earpieces, no mobile app, no nonsense all of this is a positive
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
They are easy to pair and sound good with a reliable Bluetooth connection. I will say for my wife who is not technical, she has no need for advanced sound profiles, controls, firmware updates, visuals, voice assistants or anything similar. I helped her pair these wireless bluetooth earbuds and that was it, I didn't have to provide any support other then power them up and they will connect your mobile device and or computer.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pros:
- low cost
- uncomplicated
- easy to pair
- sound decent
- easy to place in your ears and to remove
Cons:
- no mobile app (this can be a positive)
- basic controls
- no apparent need or way to update the firmware

Skullkindy not exactly candy
on May 12, 2022
Posted by: Bappy
from Raleigh, NC
How Often Used:3-5 times a week
The Skullcandy - Grind True Wireless In-Ear Headphones (earbuds) have me a bit conflicted. They have some unique features including being able to map a button to a function such as acting as a remote iOS photo app shutter button. In addition, the buds can be paired with the Tile app, so if you misplace the earbuds you can find them, again a useful feature. However even though the Skullcandy mobile app that has some good functionality and features, that does not make up for some basic deficiencies in these ear buds, First off they are oddly shaped in my opinion and not the most comfortable in my ears, they just seem a bit awkward.
The setup process was simple, and they paired via Bluetooth to my iPhone 12 without an issue. The buds sit in a carrying case/charging station, that adds about 20 hours of charging capacity, the earbuds themselves are rated to have 9 hours of life, although I did not get more than seven hours. The USB-C connection on the case a fundamentally a better connection than older USB interfaces and is pretty much standard now. The case also is a bit magnetic, so the ear buds are pulled in for charging and remain secure. However, they are a bit finicky to place in the changing case.
As for how they sound, competent is the best way to describe them. The sound reproduction is a bit on the soft side, no range stands out, even with the different settings available in the Skullcandy app. The buds also have a passthrough mode so you can hear ambient sound without removing them from your ears. As with most earbuds they come with other size interchangeable buds, the default installed medium buds seemed to be most comfortable in my ear. I will say that the control buttons require some force to press, so they feel like they are getting pushed into your ear canal a bit when pressing them.
Overall, I think these are decent, but nothing performance or feature wise stands out. I also had a bit of an issue with them not disconnecting when placing them back in the charging case, until I figured out that they were not charging (or powering down) due to the white protective plastic covers which protect the charging contacts, just make sure you remove them. I had to go back and read the small setup guide to figure out they should be removed. Skullycandy might want to make this a bit more obvious in the setup guide and use a square or shape for the plastic protective covering that doesn’t look like a finely engineered design feature.
Pros:
- Flawless Bluetooth connectivity
- Nice mobile app
- Photo shutter control
- Tile compatibility, for finding lost bud(s)
Cons:
- Mediocre sounding, even when using the app based EQ or customized settings.
- Design is a bit awkward, could snap into the charging case a bit better
- No wireless charging
- A message kept appearing which appeared to want the buds to access the internet
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

The Snow - Wireless Teeth Whitening System is so nicely designed and looks beautiful in the well thought out and attractive package you almost feel guilty unpacking it. After separating all the components, I was a bit baffled by the instructions (or lack of). First, if you had not used a tooth whitening device it can be a bit daunting determining how to use this kit. Fortunately, I was able to find their support site where they had a bit more material, I also looked on YouTube and was able to find videos which helped immensely.
The wireless mouthpiece is the really selling point of this kit, not having to deal with any type of wire is a positive. First, I brushed my teeth prior to using the device. Prep for a whitening session is straightforward, although the gel solution can be a bit messy. The mouthpiece is powered on by a multifunction button on the front, all good except kept touching the button accidentally when inserting or removing the mouthpiece. The button is capacitive, you need to be careful to not actually turn the unit off or change it to gum therapy mode, which emits a red glow instead of blue.
After using the kit, I actually noticed an immediate improvement. After using for about a week & six treatments in, there was a noticeable improvement in the brightness of my teeth, overall, they looked healthier. I was very happy with the positive results and will look forward to using the kit for regular maintenance of my now pearly whites.
Pros:
- Works as advertised, whiter teeth.
- Wireless mouthpiece.
- Easy to charge.
- Has a “gum therapy” mode which I found scant information on,
Cons (or areas for improvement)
- Mail control button should be pressured sensitive, with some tactile feedback, too easily engaged.
- Mouthpiece is a bit uncomfortable.
- Slight burn sensation after first treatment, subsided after a week.
- It is a drooly process.
- No real setup or instruction manual, for a newbie to teeth whitening that is a challenge
- Support site also not real helpful.

Great mixing appliance from GE
on April 24, 2022

from Raleigh, NC
My wife does a lot of baking, so a stand mixer is important to her, she has another mixer – the famous and more expensive well-known brand which she was gifted. When I had the opportunity to get the GE Stand Mixer, I took it, the Granite Grey color is appealing in modern day monochromatic kitchens. If you leave your mixer out and you have cheery, bright kitchen and prep area this may not fit in with the aesthetics.
In any case on to unboxing and using the mixer, first thing you notice is this is fairly considerable in size and weight. This unit is built to last, and it feels like it. The fairly lightweight 5.3-quart bowl is nice with a handle attached to the side and a lid. What I found very appealing about this mixer was the lock feature, which prevents the top portion of the mixer from slamming down when you have the mixing attachments partially out of the bowl.
Controls are simple with a basic dial controlling the mixing speed with seven different settings, nothing advanced, just does the trick
Pros:
- Love the lock in place feature when stand is in upright position, so it does not slam down.
- Dial makes is easy to set the speed of mixer.
- Bowl is light easy to handle.
- Nice and quiet when running.
Cons:
- Not enough room to add ingredients as you go on the side of the bowl (like eggs). Adding dry ingredients like flour while using the plastic shield requires you to turn off mixer, then add shield. Slot could be a little bit wider to add dry goods to bowl.
- Needs an attachment with a spatula added. Ingredients do not combine as well without one.

good for loud job sites and they look cool

The Lucid Audio - Saf -T-Ear Wireless Bluetooth Earbuds are designed for hearing protection and have a rugged build quality, they combine typical earbuds with an additional form ear fitting. The claim to reduce outside noise up to 40db, not sure if they meet that mark, but regardless the are an innovative design. As for performance, well not quite what I would expect from a good set of Bluetooth connected earphones, sound was adequate, but a bit muddy. They seem to be better suited for listening to spoken word, like podcasts. With that being said you would think they would be good for phone calls, but in general the feedback I received from people on the other end of the conversation was that I sounded low (and I have never been accused of being softspoken). Setup was fairly easy and typical for pairing to your device. They did seem to have a problem sometimes with keeping a good Bluetooth connection, so don’t expect to walk more than 15 feet away from the device you are connected to without impacting the connection.
As usual the package includes assorted sizes of ear tips and a Micro USB charging cable. A nice bonus is the included case.
Overall for the use case these were intended for they do a pretty good job.
Pros:
- Rugged build
- Two control blocks on the cord, separate up/down buttons, not a rocker button
- Separate ambient sound controls
- Tool look (black and yellow theme)
Cons:
- Connection can be flaky
- Battery life was less than expected, only lasted half my 8 hour shift.

Massaging tool is compact, easy to hold

The Foreo facial massaging tool with cleanser is a 5/5 Star product.
Cleanser is light, no fragrance, lathers very well, spreads evenly, requires a small amount for usage, rinses completely off with no residual feeling.
Massaging tool is compact, easy to hold and grip is great to apply product and lather cleanser. Does not have an overly loud sound, nor have an annoying vibration. The massaging sensation is light and refreshing with a spa like feeling. After product has been rinsed off my skin felt incredibly soft and clean. I did notice previous areas with sebum no longer appear on my nose and cheeks. I would recommend buying this product and cleanser.

large capacity tank, quiet and stylish
on January 26, 2022
Posted by: Bappy
from Raleigh, NC
The Kyvol - HD3 1.2 Gal. Ultrasonic Humidifier is a medium size cool mist humidifier with a dial on the front to adjust the amount of humidity the unit puts out. The front control panel also has a fairly bright LED indication (green for operational, red for needs water and/or cleaning). In dark rooms the LED can be a bit annoying, however I just put something in front of it to block the light. Unlike other humidifiers this unit does not include the usual blue glow mode which lights up a clear water tank, as a matter of fact the BPA free tank is a solid grey, only the water is visible when full. I found this a bit odd since you really can’t visually determine the water level other when it is topped off. The large water tank (1.2 gallons) is well designed, it has a handle both at the top and bottom of the reservoir, making it easy to hold when filling it from the tap and carry it back to the base of the unit. The tank does seem to drip a bit of excess water after you fill it, not sure if this is the valve mechanism or something else. In general, this unit is a bit more challenging to fill and transport. If you have water sensitive surfaces, be careful when removing the reservoir from the base, moving it to fill and then placing it back on the base can be challenging. The removable cap on the bottom of the tank also has “ceramic balls” which supposedly remove some odors from the water, seems a bit gimmicky but this unit did seem to produce a lot less white powder from other humidifiers I have used. Perhaps my water is less hard this year, but less mineral dust was a notable.
As for how the unit performs, it provides a strong stream of cool mist, with a plate which covers the top handle with a nozzle which rotates. The unit is quiet and at max setting pumped out a cool mist for about 36 hours before you had to refill the tank. Again, the base seems to not run really dry after the unit “runs out” of water, so be careful. Even though the tank is BPA free, the unit emitted a fairly strong plastic odor for several days. I emptied and rinsed the take several times, even with a diluted white vinegar solution (which is recommended as part of the normal maintenance routine). The manual also recommends a diluted bleach solution occasionally to disinfect the tank, especially if an organic odor starts to become apparent. Regardless of what I did the plastic smell took several days to dissipate.
Pros:
- Large water capacity
- Quiet operation
- Strong cool mist stream
- Handy tank handles top and bottom
- Adjustable humidity level (although I believe this is manual and not a humidistat).
- Seems less susceptible to producing mineral powder when using hard water.
- Cleaning brush included
- Replacement air filter included for bottom of the unit.
Cons:
- Strong plastic odor for a few days
- Difficult to determine water level since the tank is not clear.
- No place for “essential oils” if that is your thing.

basic rechargeable toothbrush
on January 20, 2022
Posted by: Bappy
from Raleigh, NC
The Philips Soniccare 1100 rechargeable electric toothbrush is basic. It is well built and includes a timer to ensure you brush your teeth for a set amount of time, breaking out into thirty second increments with a momentary pause which correlates to four different zones [my OCD breaks mouth zones up this way: top right, top left, bottom left, bottom right] or any combination you want. There is a battery charge indicator, which provides you a visual indicator of the battery state, but this version does not include the BrushSync technology in their other models which provides you an indication of when you need to replace the brush head, not a big deal as generally you can tell when the brush head needs replacing (and save a bit of money over BrushSync compatible brush heads). Overall, this unit is lightweight and handles well, the charging base is small and compact, although it utilizes a USB Type A cord to work with your standard USB charger, I guess that is a benefit rather than the regular AC plug, although it seemed a bit odd but may make sense to yield a non-country specific plug. I am happy with this unit and have yet to find anything that I don’t like about it, although I do wish more than one brush head was provided.

Streams non HDCP content
on December 27, 2021
Posted by: Bappy
from Raleigh, NC
The AVerMedia - Live Streamer Cap 4K is geared toward streaming content from non HDCP protected content to your PC. I had success capturing content from my DSLR and some gameplay from my PS4. The device is pretty simple with HDMI input and USB-C output to your PC which requires some form of a Capture program. I used Cyberlink’s Powerdirector video editing program which seamlessly recognized the capture device and recorded content from the devices I mentioned. Nothing complicated here, however I was not able to capture 4K resolution. This may have to do with the capture software I was using. AVerMedia has capture software which you can download and install on your PC, perhaps that software would have better success.
Regardless this device does the job it is supposed to.
Pros:
- works out of the box, no drivers needed.
Cons:
- could use a bit more input options, like mini HDMI
- would be a home run if it had a SD card slot for recording content.
