Excellent Sound, In-Ear Detection Needs Some Work
on October 19, 2022
Posted by: GoalieMedic
The Liberty 4 headphones are a darn good set of headphones a mid-to-upper end price point, though there are a couple of things that should move this from a 5 to a 4 star rating, but I’m going to mark those down more as nuisances than problems that should dissuade you from trying them.
The Good:
The headphones are extremely comfortable, even worn over longer periods of time. The fit in the ear is pretty good, but will need occasional adjustments, which comes into “the not so good” below. With fit being important for comfort and noise cancelation, it does come with 4 total sets of ear silicones – small, 2 mediums, and large.
Sound is extremely good, with great sound range, including nice, deep bass, and is some of the best sound in stem-based earbuds I’ve used to date. There are 22 preset EQ modes, or the ability to tweak your own to your own liking.
The headphones have three sound modes – ANC, “Normal”, and “Transparency Mode”. The ANC (active noise cancelation) mode easily rates an 8 on a scale of 1-10 in terms of its effectiveness (though like most other noise cancelling headphones there is a noticeable “stuffy head” sensation when using them without accompanying music). “Transparency Mode” allows ambient sounds in, which is great when you want some music or a podcast but still need to be able to hear things around you, whether that’s co-workers or traffic when using while outdoors. Within “Transparency Mode”, you have the option of allowing everything through (“fully transparent”), which makes it feel almost like you’re not wearing headphones at all, or “vocal mode” which tries to filter most ambient noises except voices. If you’re using these while outdoors and want to maintain good situational awareness, I suggest the “fully transparent” mode.
Depending on the mode you’re using, you can get several hours of use out of one charge. I was averaging about 2-2.5 hours when using at work in transparency mode, though at home that was somewhat less when I was using them in ANC mode. A drop-in charge for about a half hour makes them ready to use again for another couple of hours.
Controls are extremely small – a thin, almost microscopic button on the stems of each of the ear buds, which can be configured to different modes with the app. They are tough to find and will sometimes trigger the in-ear detection (see below).
No one usually talks about a case when doing reviews, but Anker put some design into the case, as well. A sleek, rounded case features a slide top to get to the buds, where you’re greeted by an LED-lit inner case, illuminating the headphones and adding a classy touch. The lights also give you visual feedback they’ve been inserted back into the case properly and are charging. And following the lead of the rest of the market, the case charges with a USB-C cable, which is included. (Finally I think we’ve pretty much moved past micro USB.)
The Not So Good:
The biggest complain I have is the in-ear detection (which can be disabled). Essentially, it automatically pauses playback if you pull one or both buds out, and resumes when they’re back in. The problem with this is the detection is VERY sensitive, even after calibrating with the app. The result is any time you try to adjust the headphones in your ear they pause the music, and often don’t resume, requiring you to trigger it with the headphones button or grab your phone. Likewise, when pushing the button on the stem to stop/start music, answer a call, or whatever other options you’ve set in the app, wiggling the earbud(s) will cause the music to pause as it loses detection that it’s still in your ear.
The app also includes bloatware in the form of “Soundcore Wellness”, with the headphones capable of detecting heart rate while you’re working out. Most of us already have a preferred fitness app and/or smartwatch that monitors our exercise and aren’t buying a set of headphones with the intention of getting a heartrate monitor out of it. It sounds like one of those extra “features” some engineer pushed to include with no one likely to actually use it. But it’s there if you choose to use it.
Overall:
These are well-fitting, comfortable, all-day wear ear buds that you can easily wear in the office and enjoy your music, while opting between cancelling everyone else out with the ANC or not being rude and being able to actually interact with others with the passthrough sound options. Of the headphones I have, these have now become my #1 in-ear buds to use for everyday wear and at the gym.

Great Watch, but Few "New" Features Over Watch 4
on September 5, 2022
Posted by: GoalieMedic
First and foremost, if you’re an existing Watch 4 owner, there’s probably not enough here to make it worth laying down the money for the Watch 5. There are a couple of “nice” features, but nothing that is going to make it completely worth your while.

Pros:
Slightly larger battery
Wear OS instead of Android
Not as heavily tied to the Samsung apps ecosystem
Super fast charging with USB-C charger

Cons:
Biggest new feature (skin temp for sleep analysis) isn’t even turned on
No wall charger for new USB-C cable

That said, the Watch 5 is Samsung’s newest release, but features little in the way of “new features” over the previous release. Same size, form factor, though a bit heavier thanks to a slightly larger battery.
Perhaps the biggest new feature (long overdue) is that the watch now runs on Google Wear OS 3 instead of Android, opening the watch to be able to download apps from the Google Play store with a lot more ease than its predecessors. You can also more easily replace all the Samsung-added apps, including the voice assistant no one likes but won’t go away, Bixby. Wear OS allows you to change this out for the much more widely used Google Assistant, allowing you to seamlessly issue voice commands and access home automation.

The watch also boasts a bigger battery, but your results will vary. The Watch 5 gives me about 2 days of battery use, but that’s if I turn it off overnight between day 1 & 2. I generally don’t like wearing it overnight for sleep tracking so I don’t have the charge the device during the day when I want it tracking my actual activity. Note also my 2 days of use is without the “always on display” feature turned on, which will eat substantially more battery over the day. In fact, with the display on during setup, it used 10% total in less than 30 minutes doing the initial setup and updates to the watch. The LTE version, if not connected with Bluetooth to your phone, will deplete the battery rapidly, as well.

Samsung also changed the shape of the back of the watch, with it now being convex where it sticks out more, instead of sitting flat, giving the watch better contact between the watch and your arm, which improves sensor accuracy. I though it might make the watch uncomfortable, but found it’s not even noticeable, and I do find that my heartrate is tracked much better during heavy exercise than the previous version of the watch.

Samsung also touts better sleep tracking with this, but that’s predicated on the new skin temperature sensor on the back of the watch that, at the time of this review, had yet to be enabled by Samsung. So perhaps the one actual new feature included on this over the Watch 4 doesn’t even work, with no timeframe estimate on when it will be.

They have also added much more durable glass, using sapphire crystal, which so far has proven scratch-resistant for me. Here’s to hoping it stays that way.

As noted, you can now easily add Google Assistant, Google Wallet, and other non-Samsung apps directly from the Google Play Store. But you can only customize 1 of the 2 buttons to launch apps (I made mine launch Google Assistant). The bottom button remains tied to Samsung Pay, whether you’re using it or not.

Of course, this watch works best when paired with a Samsung phone.
The sensors will work with any fitness app you wish to use (Strava, Nike, etc.), though you’ll get the most out of it with the Samsung Health app, which people have a love-hate relationship with.

Overall, the watch is fast, and battery life is better than previous models, and I love my Samsung watches going back to the first one they released. but barring anything major in the future with watches, I’ll probably go back to my “skip every other model” plan for watch ownership. It’s a great watch, but not enough “new” for me as compared to the Watch 4.

Excellent High-Speed Router w/ 2.5 GB Uplink Port
on July 18, 2022
Posted by: GoalieMedic
With GB (or faster) internet now more widely available, finding a router that can take full advantage of your GB internet speed is critical. The AX3000 does just that. From the capability of handling speeds above 1 GB to range to WiFi speed, this router checks all the boxes.
Connecting is simple using either a web interface or app (nothing new over the last decade on that). The router has the option of a 1GB or 2.5GB uplink port for connecting to your ISP’s modem. Again, if you’re running speeds at or above 1 GB at home, this will allow you to take full advantage of the bandwidth and not be slowed by the max speed of the router/switch ports. There are (4) 1 GB ports total, so you either have 3 or 4 ports for hardwiring gaming PCs or consoles, depending whether you use the 1 GB for connection to your ISP.
The router has WiFi 6, so for those with PCs that have a compatible card, you’ll see increased bandwidth if you’re forced to use wireless. In my case, speeds went from around 300 Mbps on a regular laptop to around 420 Mpbs on an Alienware gaming laptop with a WiFi 6 card. While we all know gaming over WiFi isn’t preferred, for those who wired connections aren’t possible, this gives you better speed up and down, as well as decreased lag. Even on our network here with 3 people gaming at the same time, I saw no substantial slowdown in speeds or increased lag.
Another feature of the AX3000 is their compatibility with tp-link’s other mesh products. The router can serve as the “base station” to other mesh repeaters for larger or oddly-configured homes.
As for coverage, while it wasn’t bad at all, I did notice some decrease in signal just 2 rooms away from the router location, as well as downstairs on the other end of the house. Nothing substantial, just a drop from 5 to 4 bars on the laptop. Again, speeds were still pulling over 400 Mbps, so wasn’t enough for me to be concerned with. But be aware that in a much larger home, you could possibly see reduced coverage that may necessitate a repeater.
The only major con I found is its construction, but it’s similar to pretty much all routers today, which is the plastic feels and sounds cheap. That’s the cost savings, I guess, but obviously that doesn’t affect the performance, just more of a nuisance that they’re made very cheaply today.
Overall, this router performed extremely well for an environment with 4 people living in the house, 2 who heavily stream and game, 1 who works full-time from home & is on Zoom calls non-stop, and the other who games and does online school. At no point was the network bogged down, and latency remained incredibly low despite the load on the system. The addition of a 2.5 GB port for taking full advantage of 1+ GB fiber speeds is great, giving you use every bit of bandwidth you’re paying for.

Very Advanced, Lots of Features, Goes off A LOT
on December 22, 2021
Posted by: GoalieMedic
from Seguin, TX
The Redenso DS1 is billed as one of the most technologically advanced devices on the market, and that appears to be mostly true, with a number of features and detection methods that outshine other radar detectors on the market. However, my ability to best assess its effectiveness is tempered by the constant alerts and alarms, going off nearly non-stop when no police are around, for reasons I’ll guess on later.
First the pros:
Redenso went a long way to making a great device, from its multi-color, user-selectable display to the magnetic attachment that allows you to easily remove the device from your window to keep thieves away to the silence button attached to the power plug, it’s clear thought went into designing the unit. And for me it’s the GPS integration & alert lockout features are probably the best part of the unit (covered shortly).
The display is crystal clear, and you can cycle through to select your preferred color, or disable to display (except for a small dot to let you know it’s on) until it alerts. Direction (N, W, NE, etc.) are displayed as well as current speed.
The device can pick up every possible type of speed detection out there, including the standard X, K, and Ka radar bands, as well as laser, MRCD, and Gatso (commonly used with red light cameras and speed cameras). This, however, comes with pros and cons, again covered later.
You can control the settings from the 4 buttons on top of the unit, though it is a lot easier to use the Redenso Nexus app and update settings using Bluetooth. Settings include the ability to turn on/off certain bands, change sensitivity settings, alert sounds, etc.
One of the biggest features is its GPS integration and ability to “learn” as you drive. Let’s say you come across one of those “Your Speed Is” signs every day on your drive to work. You know it’s not a police officer, it’s just that sign setting the device off and you don’t want to be bothered. You can manually lock the alert out with the silence button, but if you don’t the device itself will realize, “Hey, that’s the same radar type, frequency, and location, let me lock that out for you.” Lockouts will alert one audible blip then with a “Lockout” or “Auto Lockout” message on the display. Likewise, regular updates will update the internal GPS crowdsourced list to alert you in advance of a red light camera or stationary speed camera location, even before it detects a signal.
So the cons:
Depending on where you drive, it goes off CONSTANTLY. In the city I routinely drive in it appears they use K band radar mounted to light poles and traffic lights to detect traffic presence and speed. This means that the radar is going off in large swaths of the city, so it’s hard to determine whether you’re approaching a police trap or it’s the speed detectors (noting that most police departments use Ka band, but some do still use older K band devices). Turning off K band altogether just means you won’t be alerted at all, which can be a risk. I found that turning down the sensitivity didn’t help, so it’s a lot of manually silencing the unit.
The device also picks up on signals from MRCD and even Gatso in areas where I know those aren’t in use, and was never able to determine where it was coming from.
The device did alert several times for Ka band, the band usually used by modern police radar units, but not once saw an officer. So I was unable to tell whether it was a bad alert or a very, very well hidden officer.
But the constant alerts are not only annoying, but also desensitizes you to alerts that may very well be legitimate. I felt like I was in a fast food restaurant where the fries are dinging but everyone is ignoring it.
In Summary:
This unit is a very technologically advanced and capable device. The GPS learning and lockouts are great, and the multitudes of detection make this a single unit to solve all potential speed detection devices. Do your research on the types of radar in the areas you drive and know what you can turn off or decrease the sensitivity on to minimize false alerts.

Excellent Food Results, Poor UI
on September 27, 2021
Posted by: GoalieMedic
from Seguin, TX
The Bella Pro is a very functional multi-functional cooker, giving you the ability to have two different zones and cooking methods within one device. You have the ability to mix & match air frying, roasting, broiling, baking, dehydrating, and reheating, making it far more functional than a simple air fryer.
With a 9-quart capacity, I was able to easily fit 3 large leg-thigh quarters in the basket. I’ve done both the air fry & and the roast options for chicken, and both cook the food quickly and without drying out. The bake option does nothing to change the cooking time – whatever the recipe advises is what you’ll have to go with, just with the advantage of a smaller footprint than a full-sized oven.
The basket is a single basket, but with the ability to place a divider (included) down the middle. Putting the divider in allows you to cook two different foods, and even two different modes, at the same time. So you could roast chicken on one side while air frying some tater tots on the other. The seals for the drawer and divider do a good job keeping the air from one side from bleeding over to the other. Temperatures and cook times can differ for the two sides. You can also “sync” the device where it will start roasting something on one side, then turn the other side on at the right time where everything finishes at the same time.
The cons:
The large, front screen is touch-based to control the settings, and the UI is horrible. First, there is no “back” button if you make a mistake. For example, if you select the wrong mode when setting it up, you have to turn it completely off and start over. Same with any mistakes you make with time settings once the device has started – you can’t correct once started.
The touch buttons that are on the screen don’t line up with the display. For example, the touch area of one of the “down” buttons shown on the screen doesn’t line up – you have to “push” the button about 3/4” below where the button shows up.
And probably my biggest complaint is a lack of any presets in the device. My cheaper, smaller one at least has 4 presets for things like “frozen French fries”. It neither includes nor has the ability to save any presets, so you have to keep the owner’s manual with the device to refer to times & temperatures for anything you cook. Want to cook some tater tots? Flip to the table on page 22. Some chicken breasts? Page 21. Lose the manual? Good luck.
They also tout something called “trizone” cooking. This tends to make someone believe there are 3 zones to cook in when there are no more than 2. The “tri” refers to fact you can use one large zone in the basket or divide it to 2 zones. Just kind of a misleading marketing term.
In Summary:
This is a great device for cooking in. The ability to do two different foods with two different modes is excellent. The device loses a star for the UI and no presets. Just don’t lose the included user manual.

Very Comfortable, Not Great Sound for Music
on September 27, 2021
Posted by: GoalieMedic
from Seguin, TX
The Sony SRS-NB10 wireless neckband speakers are apparently being marketed to the work-from-home individual, where you would use these as your speaker and mic for your online meetings. That focus on the voice quality comes at the sacrifice of music quality, but if you understand their apparent primary purpose, that can be an acceptable trade-off.
The positives:
These have to be one of the best-designed around-the-neck headphones I’ve used. They’re ergonomic and conform to your actual shoulder & neck, so unlike others where they stick out straight from your shoulders & then flop around when you run or do vigorous exercise, these stay put. Their weight is perfectly balanced and they become nearly unnoticeable when wearing them.
Connection is quick and seamless, as most Bluetooth-enabled devices are today. Powering it on as a new device was immediately recognized by my Android device and I was offered to pair (without having to manually enter pairing mode). Range of the Bluetooth was also excellent, with me being able to easily walk into the kitchen or another room while connected to my laptop or phone without losing signal.
Battery life is good. While I recharge it before they’re completely dead, they’re rated at 20 hours of use. With rapid charging via USB-C you can get an hour of use on 10 minutes of charge if you run it all the way down.
Sound quality is good AND bad. Again, these appear to be marketed toward using at home for work meetings, and for that, they’re good. The sound is loud and crystal clear, powered by speakers that face upwards from the face of the headphones, directing that sound more toward your ears and less out into the environment. The mic is also excellent, it picks up noise from you speaking quite well without picking up excessive ambient noise. Now, where this goes bad is that the speakers are very tinny – there is very little bass composition to the sound from the speakers, so when using with music they’re poor. The music again is clear, but almost like you turned the treble settings all the way up and the bass all the way down. It sounded like an old AM radio. So this is where I’m torn. But understanding these aren’t being marked like a set of Beats, where music is the one thing they’re worried about, I can give that sound quality for music a pass.
They are also advertised as IPX4 water resistant, so they’re advertised as being resistant to “splashes”, but again I’m not willing to give that a try for this review.
The negatives:
Again, you have to start with that music sound quality.
There is also no app for phone-to-headphones integration. Sony has a “Sony Headphones Connect” app, but it does not pick up these headphones. Perhaps it’s because they’re relatively new and will be added to the app (or a new app created) later, but at the time of this review, there was no app. The lack of an app means no ability to control the sound EQ settings, which may have fixed some of the “tinny” sound, no update to the firmware, and no ability to see on your phone what the battery level is.
Overall:
Again, these are great headphones for voice-only sound. Unbelievably comfortable around your neck with great overall functionality. But if you’re looking for a set of headphones where you can use them to listen to music at high quality all day or on a walk or run, understand you’re getting less-than-stellar sound quality for music. I would easily give these 5 stars if the sound for music were better and if there was an app that I could use to work with the headphones.

High-End Performance, Great Video Display, Noisy
on August 27, 2021
Posted by: GoalieMedic
from Seguin, TX
The new Alienware 15 is a capable and powerful gaming laptop in a reasonable size. Its white case and LCD bevel on the back side of the laptop makes the device stand out in a sea of other gaming laptops, while its speed and display put this well above others I have used.
With a 15.6” monitor, which comes at the sacrifice of a numeric keypad (fine with me), the Alienware comes in smaller and lighter than many of its 17” LCD competitors. And since many people use an external monitor the majority of the time, this doesn’t take away from the laptop at all. The display itself is 360 Hz full HD, which is bright with great blacks and color depth. The panel is responsive and had no discernable flicker at all, even with high-end games. In a word, the display is “beautiful”.
The CPUs, Intel i7’s, add incredible speed to the device, with a boot up time of less than 10 seconds from power on to login screen, with apps and games launching just as fast. Temperature of the CPUs depends on the load of the game, of course, with one of the highest end games I use (MS Flight Simulator) running the CPUs at around 83° C each. Each are cooled with dual fans (which are supposed to be quieter than other laptops, but I found that to be the opposite – more on that later), with the fans running at varying speeds depending on the load on the processors, of course.
The graphics are driven by an NVIDIA GeForce RTX3070 card with its own cooling, and stayed pegged at 100% utilization on high-end games (which is fine, means it’s doing its job) and ran substantially cooler than the CPUs, around 59° C again for high-end games.
FPS were extremely good, though come at the cost of the bezel getting extremely hot and the fans going into overdrive. For example, RocketLeague, set to “uncapped” FPS, capped out at around 88 FPS with the fans running north of 90% consistently. The fans and temperature didn’t do the same with the game set to max out at 30 or 60 FPS. MSFS came in at 70 FPS with the detail levels set to “high”, but the fans again running overtime. As noted, the edges of the bezel around the keyboard also got hot to the touch, as did the underside of the laptop, when running at higher FPS rates, almost shockingly high.
The keyboard is responsive, though felt like a standard Dell keyboard. It is lit with individual RGB lights, meaning you can configure any variety of key colors or themes. The Alien on the lid, Alien power button, and back bezel can also be individually colored in the control panel.
The power adapter is quite large, and also heavy, clocking in at 23 oz (nearly 2 pounds), one of the heaviest adapters I’ve ever encountered.
The Alienware control panel allows you to monitor various components (temperature, utilization, fans, etc.), as well as control them. For example, you can choose a “quiet” mode for the fans, but will result in slower running speeds leading to higher component temps. You can also overclock the device with a couple of built-in modes or create your own. And as with any Dell laptop, it does come with a number of pieces of bloatware you’ll want to remove.
Cons:
As mentioned, the fans are loud. Very loud. This despite Dell/Alienware saying they have improved the fan’s sound profile. Also as noted, the bezel gets quite hot to the touch when high-end games are running; not to the point where you’re going to burn yourself, but high to the point of wondering how the temps long-term will affect the internal components.
The Alienware control panel is full of useless features, and takes a couple of clicks to get to the thing most people are looking for, which are the monitors for temperature and settings to control performance. Also, there appears to be a bug in the software when setting the keyboard colors where it will initially show you controls for the outside (bezel and lid) and inside (keyboard), but once you start changing the keyboard colors it never allows you to get back to the external RGB settings, acting like they don’t exist.
The NVIDIA card, when set the “Automatically Set” mode (default), will change the resolution and performance of the card depending on whether you’re playing a game or just using it for normal laptop things. While it did pick up on every game launched and switched modes, it often fails to set itself back to a higher resolution once the game is closed.
Overall:
Aside from the fan noise, which isn’t a factor on every game – just the very high-end, high FPS games – this is a very, very nice gaming laptop. The display is beautiful and responsive, and the overall performance of the laptop is superb compared to other gaming laptops I’ve used. The price may be a turn off to some, as Alienware computers often come in well above its competitors, but makes up for that in its overall performance.

Comfortable with Amazing Sound
on August 23, 2021
Posted by: GoalieMedic
from Seguin, TX
The HS80 is Corsair’s newest RGB wireless headset on the market, and they does not disappoint.
Weighing in at just under 13 ounces, the weight is comparable to a wired set I was previously using, made even more comfortable by the elastic suspension headband system that makes wearing for longer periods of time much more comfortable than other headsets where the top band rests on your head. The headband is adjustable on the inside by moving the Velcro attachments, though this means they’re not quickly adjustable like those with telescoping arms.
The ear pads are cloth, meaning long play time won’t create a bunch of sweat. One downfall is they do tend to slightly shift your glasses when wearing them as they tend to push pretty firmly against your head. I had to shift my glasses a couple of times after putting them on each time to get them right.
Sound is exactly what you would expect from Corsair – clear and excellent. Built-in surround sound means you’ll hear players sneaking up on you from the side or behind in FPS-style games. An easy-to-reach volume knob allows you to change the volume on the fly. Pushing in the knob toggles you through the 5 different sound profiles. You can also create your sound profile using the equalizer settings in the iCue software.
The mic sits on the left side and can be muted by flipping the mic up. An LED on the mic tip indicates whether the mic is on or off. You can also control the feedback (how much you hear your own voice through the headphones when speaking) via the iCue software.
The headset recharges through a USB-C connection, which is nice to see them choose to use versus MicroUSB. I got several hours of non-stop use out of the headset before needing to recharge, so an all-night gaming marathon should be no issue.
Cons:
The headset continues to use the largest in the industry USB dongle to connect the headphones wirelessly to the computer, sticking out a full 2 inches from the computer. While this isn’t a major issue for a desktop, when being used on a laptop it’s certainly annoying to have that sticking out so far. The dongle can be used to connect other Corsair wireless devices, minimizing the number dongles needed.
Additionally, since the dongle remains connected your computer continues to try and run the sound through the headphones even when the headphones are turned off. If you want to run sound through external speakers when the headphones aren’t in use, you manually have to change the sound output device. Ideally, when the headphones are off, the computer should revert to the other default device (like when using Bluetooth headphones).
The mic can only be used on the left side. If you prefer the mic on the right you’re out of luck.
You’ll need to make sure you have the latest version of the iCue software to be able to control the headphones.
Summary:
In summary, these are great headphones, a good upgrade to Corsair’s previous offerings. Comfortable with great sound, these are a good addition to your gaming or even just day-to-day use.

Fast but Runs Hot
on August 2, 2021
Posted by: GoalieMedic
from Seguin, TX
The Sandisk Ultra is a fast USB-C flash drive that works with either your computer with USB-C ports or a phone with the same. Its all-plastic design comes in at less than 3” x 1” in size, making it very easy to attach to your keys or throw in your bag without taking up a wide amount of space. When not in use the USB port retracts back into the plastic case, though the tip remains exposed to the elements (unlike drives that have a removable cap).
Speeds are extremely fast, up to 150 MB/second read and a slightly slower write speed (as with any writeable media). When transferring data from my phone to the device, I’m able to transfer a 1 GB file (movie) in around 30 seconds. Transfers are made easily if you’re using a phone with the “Memory Zone” app which you can download from the usual app stores.
The “Memory Zone” app allows you to do a full sync of your phone to the drive if you don’t already backup your phone with Google or Apple. The app works as a full drive explorer, so it can see your internal memory, any inserted SD cards (Android), and of course the flash drive, thus the app isn’t limited to use only with the drive.
None of the files on the flash drive are encrypted by default, which starts a whole series of issues with the device and SanDisk as a whole. First, you have to download a separate .exe/.pkg file (for Windows or Apple) to get encryption. Second, it only works on a computer and does not work on your phone, so any files encrypted on your computer cannot be accessed via your phone. Likewise, you cannot encrypt files on the drive that were added from your phone. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, the encryption program has not been updated since 2017 (downloaded directly from SanDisk’s website). There are plenty of new and evolving threats over the past 4 years, so a program that “encrypts” that isn’t regularly updated is a serious security concern. Add to that the fact it’s only using 128-bit AES *and* is 4+ years old, it’s probably something to just avoid for the truly security conscious.
Cons:
- The slide to move the USB-C tip out doesn’t slide well, and you find yourself fighting with it.
- The metal USB-C tip and the board that remains inside the plastic gets EXTREMELY hot when using it. And not just from leaving it in use or doing massive amounts of transfers. Like it gets hot within 60 seconds of being inserted in your phone.
- The drive requires you to click on the app or the notification to “safely remove” the device from your phone. If you don’t, you’ll receive a notification that you’ve “unsafely removed” the device with a “click here to reboot” your phone notice. What is this, 1995? The last time I felt the need to “safely remove” a USB stick was with Windows 95. Are we not past that yet?
- The all-plastic design does worry me for durability, but so far no issues. I mentioned attaching it to your keys, which clearly you can do, but just know the loop for the keys is all-plastic, as well, so if that breaks it will quickly separate from your keyring.
- I find it annoying with companies name their app something obscure and a search for “San” or “Disk” doesn’t locate the app. You have to remember it’s called “Memory Zone”. It wouldn’t take a lot to call it “SanDisk Memory Zone” to make it easier to search for.
- No phone-to-drive encryption option.
Summary: The drive is a good solution if you’re looking for an easy way to transfer files between 2 computers or a computer and your phone. It is a fast drive with plenty of space for your files, but has some considerable cons, namely the overheating, that make for some concern

Great Sound, One Bud Keeps Rebooting
on June 29, 2021
Posted by: GoalieMedic
from Seguin, TX
The Jaybird Vista 2 are another entry into the growing active noise cancelling earbud market, and they did most everything right, though one bud does keep rebooting itself at random points (see more on that below).
Starting with design, the buds come in a nice, very compact recharging case which can recharge with a USB-C (thank you for not using Micro USB!) or with a QI charger. The buds snap firmly into the case with magnets, ensuring they stay in place & charge each time.
Pairing was incredibly easy with my Android device. Removing them from the case caused my phone to immediately recognize them (no pairing button or steps) and offered to download the app. The app is a must to allow you to control the various sound modes, shift between active noise cancelling or a mode that allows ambient sound in (for running or biking), and also to configure the buttons on the sides of the buds. The app also allows you to track your buds should you lose them.
The sound quality is excellent, though the default had a little too much bass by default. The app, however, allows you to select any of 8 preset modes, and to edit each of those (and save them as your own).
The noise cancellation works extremely well, and rivals over-the-ear ANC headphones. At the gym or when out in public, the
The buds fit fairly comfortably, though I found it disappointing that the silicones on the buds are a 1-piece design, meaning the part that you insert into your ear canal and the “wing” that then fits into the cartilage of your ear to hold it in place is all 1 piece. If you have a larger ear or smaller canal, there is no ability to interchange a large say “wing” and a smaller canal bud. You’re stuck with small, medium, and large.
The mic also does well and provides good quality when using for in-call features.
Jaybird states that the headphones have up to 24 hours of use – 8 hours straight before needing to be recharged, with the case capable of 2 additional chargings. I have not gotten below 70%, even when using for 2 or 3 hours straight with ANC on. If you find yourself running low on power, Jaybird states that 5 minutes of charge will get you 1 hour of additional use.
Finally, the devices feature IP68 protection against water and dust. Jaybird shows a user being able to rinse them off with a water bottle, though I’m not eager to try this feature.
CONS:
As mentioned above, I have had a redundant problem with one of the buds “rebooting” itself. It shuts off and then comes back on, reconnects, and picks up where it left off with the music.
As for the color, it’s advertised as blue, though it’s much closer to a purple than a blue color. If you’re looking for something darker, go with the black color.
Overall, these are a good entry into the ANC bud market with a ton of features. They’re comfortable to wear and have excellent sound. The rebooting thing, though, remains a concern, and not sure if it is a hardware issue or something that can be resolved with a firmware update. Jaybird should really take this into account and work on a solution.

DJI Mini 2 is beginner-friendly, powerful, and well, mini. Impressive performance, stunning image quality, and creative videos are just a few taps away. Explore an entirely new perspective, capturing the moments that make your life truly yours.

What size SD card can it take? Does it have a size limit?

It uses a microSD card that you insert on the back side of the drone with a maximum size of 256GB. If you don't insert a card, it will save all the video & photos it captures directly to your phone, but the quality may be lower since it's having to transmit that back & may have interference. It's critical you get a card that is compatible (which really comes down to read/write speeds since the file sizes can get pretty big shooting in 4K). You can get a list of the currently supported cards on DJI's website: https://www.dji.com/mini-2/specs

does this drone have the the ability to return to the controller?

Yes. The Mini 2 now includes a "Return to Home" (RTH) button right on the face of the controller. It will return back to the GPS point where it was launched when you hit that.

But a couple of caveats on that:
1. The Mini does take 60-90 seconds from being powered on to the point where it acquires that initial GPS signal. The app will allow you to take off as soon as the controller and the drone are communicating, which is like 10 seconds. You really, really need to wait that extra few seconds until the app says (it will speak this), "The home point has been set. Please check it on the map." If you don't wait, and you're mid-flight when the GPS is acquired, THAT will be the "RTH" location. That could end up being over top a building, over water, in the middle of the woods, etc.
2. The Mini 2 has NO collision avoidance systems on it. So if you tell it to RTH, it will do so in a direct flight line from where it is now to the RTH home point. If there is any obstruction between you & the drone when you hit RTH, it will happily fly right into it. To avoid this, make sure you go into the settings in the app & set the RTH altitude. What this does is when you hit RTH, it will stop in its track, climb to the RTH height (maximum of 400'), THEN start the direct line back to the RTH point. So if you're around trees or buildings, you need to make sure that RTH height is HIGHER than the highest obstruction in the app settings. Otherwise, you risk losing the drone in a forward crash.

hello do I need any permission or authorization to fly my Mavic mini in Miami Beach?

That depends on where you're flying it. The app includes lockouts to keep you from flying in restricted areas to keep you in compliance with the law, but there are areas that you can fly in but only up to a limited altitude (max is usually 400' in the US, but if you're near an airport it can be as low as 100'). The FAA has an app called "B4UFly" that will allow you to check the airspace you're in (or plan to be in) prior to launching. AirMap is also an excellent app, better if you're a more serious drone flyer than the B4UFly app. But if you are in a restricted area, the DJI sofrware will warn you & will not allow the aircraft to take off. If you enter a restricted area, it will land immediately, which is a bigger problem. So use another app to check the area you want to fly in before heading that way. There are a lot of restrictions you have to be aware of, and an app is the only thing that will help you figure those out.

Can I use my iPhone 8 with this controller?

The app, DJI Fly, requires iOS 11.0 or greater. So it's more a matter of the OS version. If your phone doesn't support iOS 11, then no. Not sure which phones can receive which iOS upgrades.

Auto adjusts contrast and brightness to further improve the footage details in the event of an accident. Save time, money, and ease with Nextbase Dash Cams.

Does the Nextbase 622GW come with the hardwire installation kit? I'm having this installed and not sure if I need to buy the kit in addition to the cam.

It comes with a cord for a cigarette plug in your car, though you can clip the ends to expose the +/- wires & use that to hardwire.

Will this record video while parked continuously? Also is there a battery backup or something you can buy in order to prevent the u it from draining York cars battery? Will this record video to the left/right/rear of my driver side window while parked?

It has a parking mode, but must be hard-wired to allow for its use. There is no available battery pack for the device aside from some 3rd party thing you can plug it in to overnight.

You can purchase an accessory camera (rear-facing), but does not automatically record to the sides anything beyond the standard field-of-view.

Do you need some sort of Wi-Fi for this dash camera ? Does the rear dash camera come with the installation kit ? What is the factory warranty ?

No WiFi needed. It will connect to your phone w/ Bluetooth or, when using the app it will make a dedicated WiFi connection with your phone.

The rear camera is an accessory that is purchased separately and does not come with it.
