The Mobile Powerhouse brought to you by ASUS
on March 14, 2024
Posted by: Static
Currently using this laptop as a gaming/office pc for when I'm traveling for work and still want to get some gaming in during my free time. Not only does the ASUS - ROG Zephyrus G16 (2024) meet my needs, but I have to say that it actually exceeded my expectations as a gaming laptop.
The build quality is impressive. It arrived all nice and snug in it's box, which was undamaged (big ups to my local postman). Machine has a nice weight to it. Not too heavy but not a feather weight like some of these PCs are now. Feels pretty durable. It has a very simplistic look and feel to it. Not a lot of flash or extra design details. Other than the slash on the lid that can light up (pretty cool feature), the rest is pretty straightforward.
The screen quality is amazing. The ASUS - ROG Zephyrus G16 is packing a 16-inch OLED screen with a vivid 2.5K resolution and a 240Hz refresh rate that will make your TV jealous. The colors on this thing are beautiful making every background come to life. My only complaint about the screen is I wish it was bigger!
The initial setup was straightforward and pretty typical to other machines I've setup. After all of the Asus stuff completed, I started the painful task of getting Windows Update happy with itself. Just a lot of downloading, installing and restarting. Once that was done, I began loading software.
As for an office computer, it's complete overkill: 32GB of RAM, 2TB SSD and the Intel Core Ultra 9 185H perfect for gaming or checking my Outlook calendar. The specs are far better than any PC I use while in the office. Then again, I just use those so I can remote to my servers and really get to work. Loaded it with a few things: MS Office, Adobe Acrobat Pro, iTunes(need my music) and a few other things and it's the best office laptop ever.
Now for the gaming, I currently split my PC gaming between a Alienware M17 gaming laptop and my big rig is a HP Omen 880-xxx desktop with all the fixings. Both of which have served me well. This is my second ASUS gaming laptop and I have learned from experience that these pack enough power to keep up with any brand of gaming PC on the market and the ASUS - ROG Zephyrus G16 is no exception, especially while sporting a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090.
Currently running FFXIV and I have to say, everything looks gorgeous. The game ran smoothly without any stuttering. Load times were lightening fast. Rendering was perfect. It just didn't feel like I was playing on a 16-inch laptop. I was thoroughly impressed with the gameplay. Connected my DS4 controller to give the game that familiar PlayStation feel and it operated beautifully. When I say, "I'd recommend this to a friend" I mean I actually let a friend (more like a brother) play on it for a few days (we both play FFXIV) and now he doesn't want to play on his laptop anymore. He noticed that much of a difference.
As far as sound is concerned, nothing spectacular but not a disappointment either. The speakers on this laptop serve their purpose. While gaming and watching videos, primarily on YouTube, I was able to enjoy uninterrupted sound that, as far as my ears are concerned, was what I would expect from laptop speakers.
Haven't had the chance to really test the battery life yet. The longest this thing has been unplugged is when it's shut down and not being used. I prefer running off the cord when possible and lately all times have been possible.
One of the biggest questions about gaming laptops, the cooling. I can report that this machine does a good job at that. Temps on the CPU and GPU stayed around 80ish and the unit itself never felt like it was getting too warm. I usually use a laptop cooler, force of habit, even when I don't require it. I figure the more air moving around, the better. I will admit, I played the first few days without it and felt that I really didn't need it, so that was nice.
Overall, the ASUS - ROG Zephyrus G16 has my stamp of approval. Although the price tag is a bit steep, considering all of the features of this unit, you're getting a beast of a machine that will surely have you covered for years to come, or until that 2025 model hits shelves.

Don’t just raise the standard. Reshape it. The versatile HP Spectre Fold crushes the status quo thanks to its innovative design capable of multiple forms, functions, and uses that go beyond anything you’ve ever seen from a laptop. It's the world’s first 17-inch foldable PC with a wireless charging keyboard and pen. Give your powerful 12.3" diagonal laptop more screen space instantly just by quickly sliding the magnetic, auto-pair keyboard out. Detach the keyboard completely and flatten the screen to change it to an ultra-thin desktop with built-in kickstand one minute, to a 17" diagonal tablet.

The Future of Laptops....in October!!!
on October 4, 2023
Posted by: Static
HP has really outdone themselves this time with the release of the HP - Spectre 3-in-1 17" 2.5K OLED Touch-Screen Foldable Laptop. I've used multiple PC brands in the past but HP has always been one I could count on for solid built machines and their strive to be innovative. Let's get started with this gorgeous new toy for tech lovers everywhere.
Unpacking the box we have:
* HP Spectre Fold - 17" of OLED perfection
* HP Wireless Rechargeable MPP2.0 Tilt Black Licorice Pen - With extra tips
* HP ENVY USB-C Hub - With USB-A and HDMI ports
* Full-size, detachable Bluetooth keyboard - With integrated touchpad mouse for the true laptop feel
* Keyboard charging cable - USB-C
* Power Adapter
After plugging in a few cords and navigating the Windows 11 initial setup, we're off to the races.
The build quality feels sturdy. All parts appear to have been made with durability in mind. No cheap plastic or that flimsy feel that show up in some products. I will have to say, I was very skeptical about the whole "folding OLED screen" mechanic of the laptop. I know the process has been out for a while now, but I remember hearing some horror stories about tech that adopted this feature in the early stages. HP appears to have that all worked out as watching the screen bend and then flatten over and over again isn't stirring up any anxiety as it did the first couple of times. All-in-all, I'd say this was a pretty solid machine considering its parts.
The screen looks amazing. Whether in Tablet/Desktop mode at 17" or in Laptop mode at 13" you get a vibrant screen full of true colors and perfect picture quality. The OLED, IMAX Enhanced touchscreen brings movies to life when watching IMAX media streamed from Disney+. I only notice the fold in the screen when it's powered off. While playing content, I don't see any sort of distortions in the picture that you might expect with a screen that folds. Although it's not a 4K screen, it still performs admirably as the video output for this laptop/tablet hybrid.
The keyboard operates as I'd expect. Sturdy unit, not flimsy at all. Keys respond well while typing. One of the really cool features is that you can wirelessly charge the keyboard with magnets attached to the HP Spectre Fold while in laptop mode. My only issue with the keyboard is that it's not backlit, but that's more of a preference and definitely not a deal breaker.
I'll be the first to admit, not a big user of wireless pens for tablets and that sort. The only time I use them is at the checkout if I've used my card at a store. But owning a unit now that makes use of one, I guess I'll have to find some use for it. I used the pen simply to make sure that it functioned as advertised and I was met with positive results. Screen was super responsive to the pen, catching all of the strokes like it I was using traditional pen and paper. Hopefully this will encourage me to use it more.
As far as performance, we're looking at:
* Intel Evo Platform powered by 12th Generation Core i7-1250U - 10 core and up to 4.7 GHz with Intel Turbo Boost
* Intel Iris Xe graphics
* 1TB PCIe Gen4 NVMe M.2 SSD storage
* 16GB LPDDR5-5200 MHz RAM
This system easily handled everything I threw at it. From Adobe, the Microsoft Office suite, streaming music/video from various platforms, Zoom, different internet browsers with multiple tabs, etc. the HP Spectre Fold can handle it all.
In the sound department, the HP Spectre Fold comes with quad speakers supplied by Bang & Olufsen. For a tablet, this thing kicks like a desktop with speakers and a subwoofer connected to it. Well, maybe not that hard...lol, but I was pleasantly surprised by the depth of the sound and the amount of bass this unit was able to produce.
Overall, this is a great addition to the legacy of HP which has been full of innovative ways to do computing while making it stylish and appealing from the occasional online shopper to the hardcore techies that aid in taking the culture to new heights. The HP - Spectre 3-in-1 17" 2.5K OLED Touch-Screen Foldable Laptop is probably one of the most diverse systems I've seen in a while. That said, the $5K price tag may not be the most desirable price point, but I can actually say that for all that you're getting, HP made it worth it.

WD meets PS5: A Love Story
on June 20, 2023
Posted by: Static
Installation of this product was a breeze. Sony put out a video a while ago on installing the expansion NVMe drives. From start to finish, only took about 5 minutes. After plugging the PlayStation 5 back up to everything and turning it on, the system automatically recognizes the new drive and allows you to format it. First time format took about 3 seconds, no exaggeration. From there, the drive is ready to install games on. I decided to install all of my PS4 games on the expansion drive and leave the main drive for my PS5 games. You can even go into the storage options for the PS5 and set the default location that you wish for PS4/PS5 games/game data to save to. I saw no difference in launching my PS4 games from the WD 2TB SSD compared to what I saw on the main system drive. Games functioned as expected without any issues. With the limited storage space on the PS5 and the size of some of these new titles, a product like the Western Digital 2TB SSD for the PS5 is a necessity for the gamer that retired their PS4 to enjoy backwards compatibility on their new-gen system without the need for external drives that can take up valuable space in one's entertainment setup.

Great Travel Companion

The HP Dragonfly Pro 14 came in a sturdy white box that gave me a MacBook Pro feel to it. HP decided not to throw a whole bunch of useless things in the box, just the laptop, power cable and a set of simple instructions to get started. Out of the box, the laptop has a decent weight to it for a 14-inch unit. I expected it to be lighter, like some of these Chromebooks, but was pleasantly surprised to find it had that heavier, sturdy profile. Setup was straight-forward. If you've set up a HP PC with Windows before, then you've pretty much set them all up. It wasn't too long before I was at the desktop ready to explore.
As far as its use, the HP Dragonfly Pro 14 adheres to the high standard that HP has cemented into the industry over the decades in computing. For 14-inches, the screen is still large and bright enough to do meaningful work on. Movies from my external drive didn't look half bad on the screen either. The keyboard and mouse work flawlessly. The keyboard is a simple design and ease to use. The keys are backlit, which is always a nice feature. The trackpad is accurate and doesn't require unnecessary swiping to move to the desired location. The audio is pretty decent for a unit so small. No headphone jack, bit of a let down, but listening to my music through the speakers while browsing online was equally enjoyable.
As for performance, don't let its small stature fool you. The HP Dragonfly Pro 14 is sporting an AMD Ryzen 7 7000 Series that can operate at up to 4.7GHz with 16GB of RAM and a 512GB NvME SSD for storage. Along with that, you have an integrated AMD Radeon that maybe won't let you appreciate the highest settings of your favorite game, but still gets the job done nonetheless. Even after running for a few hours and trying multiple programs, this laptop was still cool to the touch the entire time. I barely remember the fans revving up, if they ever did at all. I haven't found anything that this unit can't reasonably do, given its specs.
All-in-all, I would say this laptop is perfect for work travel with some light gaming during the off time. The size and weight offer premium portability while everything "under the hood" offers you a workstation that could rival some of you bigger class laptops. Overall, I'd rate the HP Dragonfly Pro 14 a great companion to the employee on the move.

Landline's Still A Thing

Recently upgraded to a cable modem with voice to take make use of the voice service on my Xfinity plan. This cordless phone by Panasonic meets all of my needs and in a few instances, exceeds in places I didn't think initially mattered. Setup is just a couple of minutes. After the initial battery charge, I waited a couple of hours, my new phone was ready to use. One of the main features that I like is that it doesn't use one of those weird battery packs that you have to hunt for when the old one stops holding a charge. It uses rechargeable AAA batteries. Someone was clearly thinking about making the consumer's life easier with this one. It also has it's own digital answering system. No need to access my service provider's VM system, I can get my messages straight from my phone. This unit also has it's own call blocking system, allowing me get rid of the robo-calls and telemarketers that faithfully make their rounds on a daily basis. Even though this unit only came with one phone, this system is expandable by up to 5 additional handsets. The range on this phone is excellent. I can walk virtually anywhere in my house while on a call and never lose signal with the base. Voice quality is amazing. All callers sound clear and crisp via regular phone and speaker. The LCD screen is clear and the text is a good size, even for eyes that may require assistance. All-in-all, Panasonic did an excellent job with this unit and I can see myself purchasing additional units to expand this system over my entire house.

34" of Curved Perfection
on March 14, 2023
Posted by: Static
Didn't quite know what to expect when getting this monitor. Other than the time-tested build quality of Samsung products, I was pretty much in the dark on everything else. Then I received my monitor, pressed the power button and the light filled the room. The Samsung Odyssey OLED G8 is one of the best gaming monitors I've ever used to this date.
Let's start with the assembly and initial setup. Very straightforward. Out the box, just took a few minutes to assemble the monitor and place it securely on my table. The build quality is amazing. Before turning the monitor on, you can appreciate just how gorgeous this thing is. The metal finish and super thin curved screen make this a very attractive piece of equipment. It even includes a little RGB on the back which is a nice touch. It has ports for USB-C, Mini-DisplayPort and Micro-HDMI. I would of preferred standard HDMI, but buying a Micro-HDMI to HDMI converter only set me back a couple of bucks, so no harm no foul. The onscreen instructions for initial setup were even easier. A few selections here, connect to my wireless and on to the home screen. At first glance, it has the look and feel of a Smart TV. Your popular streaming apps are readily available along with other apps for gaming purposes. Menus are easy to navigate and moving between apps is seamless. All-in-all an efficient user experience.
Now, let's get to the PC hookup. I ran this two ways: first, as the dedicated monitor to my HP Omen desktop gaming machine and second, as the secondary monitor to my Alienware laptop. This was my first experience with an OLED screen and I'm hooked. Every game I played looked insanely gorgeous. I feel like I'm playing these games for the first time. Compared to what I've been playing on, the difference in picture quality is like night and day. During gameplay, there's no stutter at all, not even a hint of lag. Feels like I'm watching a movie that I'm controlling. I've played on 65" TVs with rather impressive price tags that don't look this good and all of this out of a 34" monitor. Samsung outdid themselves on this one.
Overall, I'm extremely satisfied with the Samsung Odyssey OLED G8 gaming monitor. If you want to experience your titles the way they were meant to be showcased, this is the display for you. And although it does carry a hefty price tag, with a brand like Samsung, you're sure to get an experience that will be around for a while to help you justify that punch to the wallet.

Great Smart/Fitness Watch
on November 9, 2022
Posted by: Static
Initially, I was hesitant to get a wearable since I figured it would be yet another distraction. However, I was upgrading my phone to a Pixel 7 Pro and figured that I might as well take the leap and go with the Google Watch as a compliment. I have to admit that I was wrong. I'm glad I have this watch.
Right off the bat, I'm a fan of the aesthetics of the watch, even with the default band. I've had no issues with the interface, so locating apps, options, or settings in the menus has been a breeze. The default watch faces have plenty of options for customization and if that's not enough, then you can find more on the app store.
Syncing the watch to the phone and configuring the various apps was relatively seemless. I did experience a small issue with Fitbit. I had to repeat the sync process 3 or 4 times. However, this could have been a connectivity issue with the Fitbit account instead of the watch. I've had no issues with receiving and responding to watch notifications. I expected to have issues with using the keyboard, but I was pleasantly surprised that I didn't register incorrect characters while typing on the watch face.
The first 2 days, I was concerned about the battery life. It seemed to drain quite quickly (around 20% in the late evening). Each day after the first two, the watch has lasted dramatically longer. I'm very impressed by how quickly you can charge the watch to full. My watch will charge from less than 20% to completely full in less than an hour!
I wish the Google Watch could sync the alarm with my Pixel 7 Pro. I don't think there is a solution to this, so I did have to create alarms independently from the phone. This has not been a deal breaker for me. It was easy enough to set an alarm on the watch.
So far, I am very pleased with the Google Watch.

Perfectly Wireless
on October 13, 2022
Posted by: Static
The Corsair K100 Air Wireless keyboard may not be my introduction to the Corsair product line. I've previously used the K70 and K95, both solid gaming keyboards. However, it has quickly become my favorite after spending some time with it. I've also owned a few wireless keyboards in the past but none were actual gaming keyboards. And as someone who likes to be "cord free", the idea of a premium gaming keyboard that's also wireless was something that I had to experience.
After unpackaging my new K100 Air, I was thoroughly impressed with the build quality of this unit. Despite only being 17mm thick, the K100 Air feels rather sturdy and durable for being constructed with aluminum. The thin profile is a plus since most gaming keyboards tend to be on the "clunky" side. Although it's pretty rigid, it doesn't weigh a ton. It's rather light, which makes it the perfect choice for a travel keyboard.
The Cherry MX Ultra Low Profile keys feel phenomenal. I probably do more PC gaming on my laptop than my desktop, so I really appreciate the look and feel of the K100 Air because it has the look and feel of my laptop keyboard while delivering that satisfying "click" that my mechanical keyboards deliver. All of the keys feel nice and solid and don't sway under the weight of your fingertips.
Gaming Keyboards and RGB go hand-in-hand and if you want to get the most out of the K100 Air, you're gonna need to install the new iCUE software. I've probably spent just as much time customizing color patterns as I have actually using the keyboard. The amount of options almost seems endless as you can configure the keys to look like and do just about anything you can imagine.
One of the coolest features on the K100 Air is the ability to connect to multiple devices. I have this paired up with my gaming machine, my work machine and my PS5. Switching between devices is seamless and I get the same reliable connection on all of my devices. Usually, I would have to have 3 separate keyboards hooked up, which would all be different. Now I just move from device to device with the same keyboard, sit down and I'm ready to go. A benefit that I have now, that I never knew I was missing out on.
Overall, if you're looking for the functionality of a premium gaming keyboard, coupled with the freedom of wireless connectivity, the Corsair K100 Air Wireless keyboard just might be what you've been looking for. The K100 Air is a full sized wireless mechanical keyboard that is highly customizable, low latency, and offers masterful wireless multi-tasking through the seamless switching between paired devices.

Alienware Does It Again!!!

Currently using this laptop as a gaming/office pc for when I'm traveling for work and still want to get some gaming in during my free time. Not only does the Alienware x14 R1 meet my needs, but I have to say that it actually exceeded my expectations as a gaming laptop.
The build quality is impressive. It arrived all nice and snug in it's box, which was undamaged (big ups to FedEx). Machine has a nice weight to it. Not too heavy but not a feather weight like some of these PCs are now. Feels pretty durable.
The screen quality is amazing. I've had HDTVs that haven't looked this good. The colors on this thing are beautiful making every background come to life. My only complaint about the screen is I wish it was bigger!
If you're a fan of a light show, look no further. The Alienware x14 R1 has what you're looking for. The RGB on this thing is nice. Not only is the whole keyboard done, but it has the signature Alienware head on the back of the lid that lights up as well. Still playing with the settings to get a color scheme that I really like.
The initial setup was straightforward and pretty typical to other machines I've setup. After all of the Alienware stuff completed, I started the painful task of getting Windows Update happy with itself. Just a lot of downloading, installing and restarting. Once that was done, I began loading software.
As for an office computer, it's complete overkill: 16GB of RAM, 512GB SSD and the 12th Gen Intel Core i7 perfect for gaming or checking my Outlook calendar. The specs are far better than any PC I use while in the office. Then again, I just use those so I can remote to my servers and really get to work. Loaded it with a few things: MS Office, Adobe Acrobat Pro, iTunes(need my music) and a few other favorites and it's the best office laptop ever.
Now for the gaming, I currently split my PC gaming between a Alienware M17 gaming laptop and my big rig is a HP Omen 880-xxx desktop with all the fixings. Both of which have served me well. So this is not my first rodeo when it comes to Alienware machines.
Currently running FFXIV and I have to say, everything looks gorgeous. The game ran smoothly without any stuttering. Load times were lightening fast. Rendering was perfect. The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 is more than capable of running my games at max settings and delivering gorgeous gameplay. It just didn't feel like I was playing on a 14 inch laptop.
Overall, I'm impressed with Alienware x14 R1. If you're looking for a gaming laptop and don't want to break the bank, Alienware has something for you.

Great Printer for Home/Small Office Use

Right out of the box, I was impressed with this printer. Not only were all three colored inks and a black ink included, but there was enough left over for a partial fill for a later date. The physical set up of the printer was straight forward. I love that this is truly a wireless printer. I was not forced to put it in our home office due to USB and network cable constraints, although I may hook it up via USB to my guest PC. This thing has some size/weight to it so make sure you have a open and sturdy flat space to store it. Filling the ink reservoirs was simple and oddly satisfying. Setting up the printer on my network proved to be extremely easy. After getting it on the network I was able to print from every PC, Mac and phone/tablet that we own. Probably the fastest home printer I've ever had. It spits out sheets so fast that I feel like I'm at the office. Color quality is spot on. Had to print a copy of a MS PowerPoint presentation and it was just as bright and vibrant as it looked on the monitor. The copying and scanning functions work flawlessly as well. My only complaint is with the screen on the printer. I would of liked a bigger screen, but that is more of a preference thing and does not take away from the functionality of this unit. I found the included software and the mobile app to be more than what I need for regular daily use, but they do have some very nice features that I may use in the future. Canon has really helped me step up my home printing capabilities.
