Still the best wireless camera system
on November 12, 2017

from Longmont, CO, USA
First things first, I have last year's Arlo Pro system also. The new cameras (Pro 2) sync to the same base as the original Arlo Pro, so if you already have a system you can simply add the new cameras and go. I have been using the original Pro for about a year now and love it. Frankly, the Pro 2 is the same as the original except for two points. One the Pro 2 now offers 1080p broadcasting and, two, it also allows for plugged-in continuous streaming too. The upgraded resolution is noticeable when you blow it up on a computer screen or view the cameras on say an Apple TV. Color also seems improved, so overall a very nice improvement there. As for the continuous streaming function you must have a paid account to use it and record the video to your Arlo account. Honestly, the latter would certainly be good in a commercial situation, but I am not so sure about around the house. Maybe it could be used as a baby monitor or if you are gone from your home a substantial amount of time. I don't need it and therefore haven't tried it. For me the win was the upgraded resolution.
Otherwise, this is the same awesome Arlo camera system from last year. The cameras are weather resistant, offer night vision, and have 2-way audio. The cameras always connect to the base and I have had zero issues with video quality. The base offers a pretty loud siren and can send alerts to your mobile device. The system has geofencing capability, scheduling parameters, and now works with Alexa too. I don't have an Echo Show or FireTV so I have never tested that functionality, but it is there.
Battery life is still remarkable. I use mine with motion activation at the front of my house and I live on a fairly busy street so they are on quite a bit. I have to charge them about every two weeks, but the one in my basement for monitoring my kids only has to be charged once a month or so. Either way, you don't have to worry about always charging them. I use the balanced video mode which extends battery life, but there is also a battery saving mode too which I would presume boosts the compression. I find balanced to be sufficient for battery life and still give me the visual clarity I am looking for. I am also still using the free account that allows for seven days of cloud backup. For me seven days is plenty of time, but one could pay for more time if needed. At least it is an option, but I think the free account will be plenty for most people.
Overall, if you are in the market for a wireless camera system the Arlo Pro 2 offers a great package at a reasonable price. If you already have the Arlo Pro system and want to add cameras, take comfort knowing you can add the Pro 2 cameras with ease to your existing installation. Highly recommended.

Easy and Effective

The Phillips Avance ProMix hand blender is my first hand blender so I don't have a lot to compare it to directly. What I can say is that it has a LOT of power. You feel like you could blend anything once you have it going. It has an analog variable speed (non-stepped) trigger and the blades have a shroud to prevent splash. The blades themselves are titanium coated and should be very durable long term (even with frozen foods and ice). The included bowl is ideal for small jobs and in my case I made a strawberry smoothie from frozen strawberries and it tore through them with ease. The bowl and blade/shroud are all dishwasher safe too if you don't want to hand wash. The unit is also compatible with other ProMix accessories such as the potato masher, chopper, whisk, etc. attachments. Overall build quality is excellent and doesn't feel like Philips skimped on anything. Only thing I would like to see in a future variation is a possible cordless model. That's not a knock against this one though, just something that would be nice to see as the cord can takes some getting used to.

Provide ample battery power for your Apple Watch with this Belkin MIXIT DuraTek charge cable. Its inner fiber liner adds strength and durability, and the 4-foot length offers plenty of leeway between the wall and your nightstand. This Belkin MIXIT DuraTek charge cable has protective insulation to shield the wires from damage as it bends and flexes.

Not much I can say about the Belkin Duratek Apple Watch cable without stating the obvious. It is extremely high quality and built to last longer than my watch probably will. It works as intended and charges my Apple Watch Series 3 without fail. Feels premium thanks to the Kevlar wrapping on the cable and the magnetic charger looks great in the black and white finish. This is leagues better than the Apple supplied charger and will be by travel charger going forward.

Simplified My Kitchen
on October 12, 2017

The Ninja Intelli-Sense Kitchen System is truly the definition of a kitchen system. It has officially replaced my Breville blender and food processor with it's unique set of attachments combined with exceptional power. The 1200W motor and dead simple touch controls that are unique to the attachment make the Intelli-Sense an effective tool for cooking preparation (and margarita making). Auto-spiralizer made quick work of some carrots and cucumbers for a salad and then I quickly detached the spiralizer and threw on the pitcher and whipped up some margaritas for the evening. The crushing pitcher made quick work of the ice in a single pass and my wife and I were in margarita heaven. Not to mention this can also whip up dough for baking, chop vegetables, make smoothies, and churn ice cream too. Everything is super easy to clean and dishwasher safe. I only hand cleaned the spiralizer blades because the plastic is a bit different and I didn't want to split the plastic in the dish washer possibly.
Overall, this is an easy recommend as it combines so many possibilities into a single unit. Takes up far less room than individual equipment and is equally effective. Only real complaint I have is that I wish the base was made out of metal instead of plastic. Not a deal breaker by any stretch, but I do hope Ninja considers the change for the next generation.

Almost there...

Pros: fast quad core processor, fast Samsung PM961 SSD, quiet (even in performance mode), improved keyboard over the 910, good trackpad, Thunderbolt 3, standard USB-C charging, USB-A connection. solid WiFi with consistent throughput, fingerprint reader with Windows Hello, relocated camera at the top of the screen, great build quality, and nice thin, light design.
Cons: Mysterious battery usage when sleeping which is keeping me from getting better than 10 hours at 50% brightness, screen isn't terribly bright and does exhibit some backlight bleed at the bottom, the bottom bezel is still unnecessarily large, display color and contrast is only average, and no automatic backlight on keyboard (only on/off setting)
I have been using a Dell XPS 13 9360 for quite a while now and believe it is a pretty fair comparison to the Yoga 920. The Dell has an FHD screen also, but is ~1/2" smaller. The screen is brighter, better color, and improved contrast over the Yoga. The Dell is an i5 dual core model with a 128GB SATA SSD so it isn't nearly as fast as the Yoga 920 with the 256GB NVMe Samsung PM961 and quad core i7 processor. Battery life is better on the XPS 13 despite the smaller battery. The excessive battery drain the Yoga 920 exhibits when sleeping is a bit of a mystery. I'm hopeful that Lenovo will issue a BIOS fix. The Yoga 920 is quieter than the XPS 13 under full load. While the fans are audible, they have a deeper sound and are not as intrusive as the XPS. The nice thing with the Yoga 920 is that it can quickly switch between performance mode and quiet mode using a FN+Q. The keyboard and trackpad are a draw between the two for me. The Yoga 920 has good firm keys with nice travel and the trackpad is fast and responsive with two finger gestures.
Bottom line: If Lenovo can get the sleep battery drain under control then the new 920 will be an exceptional thin & light notebook. Only real improvement I would like to see in the potential 930 is an improved FHD screen. I suspect the 4K screen is much better, but the battery will take a direct and substantial hit. Overall, the Lenovo Yoga 920 offers a lot of performance in a sleek design. Intel's refreshed Kaby Lake i7 is a winner thanks to the additional cores.

Gold Standard
on September 23, 2017
Posted by: Balthazar2k4
from Longmont, CO, USA
The Bose QC35 continues to be the gold standard in noise cancelling technology. I have not heard a competing noise cancelling over-the-ear headphone that is better in my opinion. The series II takes it up a notch by bringing the same lightweight design, comfortable fit, and outstanding noise cancelling, as well as, tacking on Google Assistant capabilities. At first, I wasn't sure what to make of this when reading about it before hand, but after using it in these headphones I can say it is a very nice addition indeed.
Once you get the headphones out of the box the overall setup is pretty painless. Pair the Bluetooth and install the Bose Connect app on your device. The latter is not required for general operation, but needed for Google Assistant setup. Once Google Assistant is up and running one simply pushes the button on the left earcup and states either a question or request. I setup Google Assistant to use my Apple Music and it worked pretty well. I asked it to play a variety of tracks and it worked without fail. I then asked simple questions such as "What's the weather today?" and "Do I have anything scheduled to do today?" Both questions worked great and I can definitely see some value in this feature.
Now back to the headphones themselves. As I said before, they are very similar to last year's QC35. Honestly, if you have the Series I, I am not sure the upgrade to the Series II is it worth it for Google Assistant alone. That is a decision only you can make. Let's get down to brass tax though... while the noise cancelling is second to none, the audio quality I think suffers a bit for it. The headphones have a very bright sound and seem to lack the bottom end I would like. I prefer a warmer sound for longer listening periods as it can be less fatiguing. The QC35 have a more balanced sound at lower volumes, but as the volume increases so does the top end frequencies. At low to mid volume I could easily listen to the headphones for hours, but once you get above midpoint the sound tends to become grating. The headphones get pretty loud and listening to it at it's midpoint is certainly doable even in noisy situations thanks to the noise cancelling, but if you really want to rock out these may not be it.
Overall, the headphones offer the amenities most would want such as the ability to plug in to a device (as opposed to Bluetooth operation), play/pause/answer/hang-up button, and volume controls. They offer about 20 hours of battery life and that seems to be the case using them at 50% volume. Are there noise cancelling headphones that offer more? Sure, but none of them offer the noise cancelling ability that the QC35 II offers and usually come at a higher price too (I'm looking at you Sennheiser). If you are a traveler then this will continue to be the gold standard for most likely another year anyways...

Truly Exceptional
on September 22, 2017
Posted by: Balthazar2k4
from Longmont, CO, USA
Over the course of the last year I have tried several top-end consumer routers including the Linksys EA9500 and Velop system, as well as, the Netgear Orbi. Since those reviews I have moved into a different house and was using the Orbi as my workhorse due to the two levels plus finished basement in my new location. I was using a single satellite located in the basement with the Orbi router on the main floor. It worked. I wouldn't say it was spectacular, but it worked. I always had problems streaming upstairs though. Just couldn't reliably stream anything above 15mb/s to the upstairs master bedroom. Adding a satellite might have helped, but I didn't really want to spend the money that Netgear was asking for an additional satellite.
In walks the Linksys WRT32X and all I can say is 'Wow!'. That singular device has effectively solved all my streaming problems in my house. I streamed Interstellar to my Nvidia Shield from my Plex server which never would play in my bedroom before with ease. That has 40mb/s spikes and was a buffering nightmare with the Orbi. The WRT32X did it flawlessly. In fact, I decided to stress the router and stream two movies upstairs, one on the main floor, and one in the basement. To my surprise it did it without fail. The range and throughput of this router is pretty mind blowing. I'm sold.
The new Linksys software in the WRT32X is superb. Finally, a router that has a good graphical interface and easy to use controls. Everything is laid out well and is very intuitive. Linksys has been making big strides in improving their interface over the last year or so, but the WRT32X is easily the best in my opinion.
The router offers special support for devices with Killer networking, but I do not have any to test with so I can only assume it provides further improvement. I did try playing some Destiny 2 on my PS4 Pro over Wi-Fi and did not notice any latency issues or drops. I did have issues with this on the Orbi satellite which I had the PS4 Pro wired into. I would get significant latency issues sometimes. Thus far the WRT32X is working like a well-oiled machine.
The router offers both USB and eSATA support of which I tried neither. It also has a four port gigabit switch which I am using all of the ports on. My desktop PC registers 926mbps down and 940mbps up on my gigabit internet connection. My Dell XPS 13 saw 453mbps down and 477mbps up which is the best I've seen from it. Doesn't get any better than that.
Overall, I am very impressed with the WRT32X and it is now my new workhorse for the house. I have dozens of Wi-Fi devices in my household and it has offered trouble-free connections since its installation. Time will tell, but for now this is my number one recommendation for a Wi-Fi router.

Logitech Does It Again
on August 2, 2017
Posted by: Balthazar2k4
from Longmont, CO, USA
Logitech is the undisputed king of wireless mice. The G703 only reaffirms this. The mouse has adjustable weight, expansive controls via software, and feels premium in the hand. The 12,000 DPI sensor is crazy accurate, but way beyond my level of control. At my age it is just too much, but for the younger, agile gamer it could be a great fit. The mouse feels great in my hand even though I do miss the thumb rest seen on my MX Master 2S. I paired the mouse up with my Logitech G810 keyboard for some fun lighting effects, but honestly they are not nearly as extensive as either Razer or Corsair's options. The software allows for a myriad of options ranging from the selectable DPI button below the scroll wheel to button heat mapping and surface sensitivity. Battery life is the big question for me. I have not had it long enough to truly evaluate what I can expect, but the addition of PowerPlay support could make it a non-issue. Unfortunately, the PowerPlay mats aren't available yet so I will just have to see how it goes for now. The ability to wireless charge a wireless mouse could be the ultimate combo.
Overall, another winner from Logitech. If you are in the market for a true wireless gaming mouse than this should be on your short list.

Simple Way to Make Great Juices
on July 25, 2017
Posted by: Balthazar2k4
from Longmont, CO, USA
This is my first juicer so I am looking at this Philips juicer from a novice perspective. Out of the box it was quick and painless to set up. Easily took less than five minutes to get rolling. My wife picked up a couple bags of oranges so I could see if morning fresh squeezed orange juice was practical. Let me start off by saying that in my world it is not. It isn't the fault of the juicer, but the time it takes to peel and juice five oranges for one glass of orange juice is simply more time than I am willing to give up. The chute that you feed the fruits and vegetables into is rather small so you will need to cut most things to get them in the machine. That said, the Philips juicer did a great job of producing some really tasty orange juice. Also of note is that the juicer has a valve at the spout to control the flow of juice to your glass/receptacle. Handy when you have filled up your glass and don't want the rest of the juice running all over your counter-top. After a couple of glasses of orange juice (read: 12 peeled oranges later) for the family to try it was time for the cleanup. Now I had read several other reviews from people noting the difficulty in cleaning the unit, but my experience was quite the opposite. The machine breaks down quickly and everything rinses quickly. If it took me more than three minutes to cleanup I would be pretty shocked. It was painless.
The juicer comes with a recipe book of 20 different juice drinks to consider and my wife is already plotting her first juicing experiment. It also comes with a tub for juice collection if you are looking to make more than a glass full. The tub has measurement graduations on the side and a lid for storage.
Overall, I am pretty impressed. It does exactly what it is designed to do and I couldn't ask for more.

Cool Idea
on July 1, 2017
Posted by: Balthazar2k4
from Longmont, CO, USA
I own a lot of Sony products. A lot. The one thing I have learned is that they always have their quirks. The HTS-5000 is right in-line with those expectations. The unboxing and setup of the soundbar and accompanying sub was crazy simple. The sub is wireless and the soundbar immediately found it when I powered on the unit. After connecting it to me ShieldTV and tweaking some of the input settings to allow for 4K HDR content I was off and running. I jumped into my Plex library and gave Batman v Superman a go as it is Atmos content. My immediate reaction was "Whoa!" as I was enveloped in sound. Full disclosure, I installed this unit in my bedroom as I have a full 7.2.4 system in my living room with all discrete speakers. So I know what Atmos should sound like. The soundbar gave a reasonable facsimile of Atmos through the reflection of sound. The front stage was clear and articulate, but the "simulated" surrounds had a tendency to sound a little muddy. The sub is quite strong if not a bit one note. Works well for movies, but for music it is a questionable choice. The overall presentation was fun, but the price of this system kept popping up in my head as I listened. Plus, the lack of DTS/DTS:X compatibility really jumps out. For the money being asked you could assemble a system with true discrete speakers and DTS compatibility. I suppose though if you are looking for something to stick in a bedroom that offers above average sound than the HTS-5000 will fit the bill. I imagine that you could probably get pretty close for quite a bit less money and that is the real problem here. I just don't think I could recommend this system at this price point. If you can find it for significantly less than I say go for it.

Are these noise cancelling for gyms that play really loud music?

They do not offer active noise cancellation. They do however provide pretty decent passive noise cancellation if you can get them snug in your ears.

is this a matt or gloss finish?

Glossy with an anti-glare finish. Does a reasonable job with reflections, but is no match for a matte screen.

How much are the Satlelites and are/when they available? My home is 4200 square feet. W/2000 square feet of finished basementnd I need all 3 floors covered. I know 2 cant cover 6200sqft. But one on each floor might. Also can each work being cat6 wired in

Three units (including the router itself) should have you covered assuming you can place them roughly center on each floor. Unfortunately, the satellites cannot be wired in at this time, but I do believe Netgear is looking at the situation. I am using the router and a single satellite in a ~4000sq ft home with a finished basement and it works great even with the satellite being connected wirelessly. Keep in mind the Orbi system uses a dedicated 5ghz channel as a backhaul so it does not work like a conventional router/extender combo.
