A great vacuum for pinch-hitting pickups!
on November 11, 2017
Posted by: PhilGA
from Atlanta, GA
I was given a unit free of charge in exchange for an unbiased review.
Do you have a great, full-sized vacuum already in your household? How about a mop system of some sort? While these are indispensable when it comes to major chores around the house, do you have something for when you have fifteen minutes to get ready for family or friends coming over? Something of a size that can whisk around the house and is easy enough to handle by either yourself or a child?
Hoover's FUSION Cordless Pet Stick Vacuum might be the device for you.
I had originally chosen to review this item because -- based on my opening paragraph, above -- I already head different vendors' equipment to do major chores around the house. But when it came to freshening things up, whether that was hard surfaces or carpeting/rugs, or even stairs, I was really having to lug the wired device around.
Not any longer. The FUSION makes it significantly easier to clean up major trafficked areas a breeze. After initially charging the sizable lithium-ion battery overnight (documentation says three hours are required for the first charge), I was able to hook up the unit to the extender pole and brush head without issue and really go to town. A selector button at the top allows me to select between hard floors or carpeting, and a circular LED indicator just above the floor selector allows me to keep an eye on battery charge.
One attachment has soft bristles allowing for dust pickup. While I had to specifically move collected dirt more towards the hole of the attachment to be sucked in when connected to the extension pole, if I removed the poll and simply attached the soft bristle attachment directly to the machine (a la Dustbuster days from the 80s!), it worked much better. Part of this is because the extension pole has metal leads that allow the battery to operate the rotating brush without issue, but doesn't really provide enough suction for any other attachments.
Another thing to note is that Hoover has so snugly created the attachment connection between attachments that it can be a bit of a struggle to remove attachments. What I realized is that this is because Hoover really wanted a good connection between the extension pole and the brush head attachment, so that makes sense overall.
The biggest value that this device presents for me is its range of motion. I can literally stick the brush head attachment underneath a piece of furniture until I'm merely two to three inches off the ground and the brush head does not lift up. Very nice. Further, when I'm cleaning stair steps, I can literally twist the pole ninety degrees to the right or left, and the corresponding portion of the stair can easily be cleaned; it's excellent movement in either direction to really knock out cleaning stairs. This functionality has literally allowed me to save fifty percent of the time it normally takes to vacuum my stairs imprecisely with my full-fledged vacuum and its extension wand.
Overall, while the Hoover FUSION won't replace your full-sized vacuum (it wasn't designed to do so), it is a great "in-between" device to use when it comes to pick clean-ups.

Product is excellent; beware Alarm.com integration
on October 23, 2017
Posted by: PhilGA
from Atlanta, GA
As can be seen via a nearby label, I was given a free unit in exchange for an unbiased review.
If you have third-party services that give your security system some semblance of cloud-based control (such as Alarm.com), you'll want to read this review fully.
First of all, the product itself -- which comes with a hub (gateway is built in) as well as a door sensor -- really is excellent. The only real issue that I found was that the setup instructions that came with the unit weren't as thorough as I would have preferred; I resorted to one of Chamberlain's own setup YouTube videos that was much more thorough in terms of steps.
When the unit is set up, the hub contains an LED-based light that, when closing a garage door, will flash several times and beep for several seconds as a safety measure. After all, if you're closing the door from the app, then (rightfully so) nobody in physical proximity to the door is aware, and so the door doesn't close for about 7 - 10 seconds after you ask it to do so from the app. I think this is an excellent safety feature on Chamberlain's part. Opening the door is the exact opposite; my experience so far is that the door opens about 2 - 3 seconds after I ask it to do so over the app (and this was tested via both wifi and LTE).
For overall execution and product design, it's excellent, once you understand how to get it set up (and, really, the reason why it's somewhat complicated to set up is because Chamberlain has had to account for recognizing many types of garage door openers, so that's fair).
As far as security system integration, beware: since the product is in a subsequent generation, it might not be fully recognizable by services such as Alarm.com. In fact, I currently have a ticket open between my security company and Alarm.com to figure out why, after my provider enabled all available options for garage door/opener integration, Alarm.com still won't recognize the serial number of my hub (they require this number in order to proceed with security setup). In most situations, this might be due to the fact that you cannot enable the unit with both Chamberlain's app (where I currently have it to test/use) and Alarm.com simultaneously; should we get this issue resolved, I'll be removing it from Chamberlain so that it's freed up for Alarm.com's use.
Regarding app usage, in both situations (Chamberlain app and Alarm.com), there are many options to choose in terms of alerts: length of time garage door was open, notifications for when the door opens/closes, geofencing, third-party automation service integration, and so on.
And if you have two garage doors, no worries there -- you can get a second door sensor and it should pair with the hub without issue.
If you're in the market for a wifi-enabled garage door opener, this is the one to get, in spite of third-party security-related issues (those challenges should get worked out in time). Besides, after enabling in Chamberlain's app, the same app can be used to disable it for other system usage, so either way, you're covered :)

Enjoy up to 10 hours of wireless audio with these Sony noise-canceling headphones. They produce rich sound by playing at audio frequencies of 3-40,000Hz and have a closed-back design that blocks outside noise for a better listening experience. These Sony noise-canceling headphones sit comfortably behind the neck and work with or without the 1m wire.

Excellent over the shoulder headphones
on October 23, 2017
Posted by: PhilGA
from Atlanta, GA
As can be seen via a nearby label, I was given a unit in exchange for an unbiased review.
So far, this is the second set of Sony earphones I've reviewed. The first ones were fantastic, conventionally-styled (over the head) earphones that were of typical Sony sound reproduction as well as solid electronic noise-cancelling. This over-the-shoulder unit is no less in the same way -- great sound, excellent noise cancellation, and lots of ways to customize.
Besides the box in which Sony ships the earphones (which itself is worthy of holding on to), there is a veritable kit of items that go along with the unit: a very well-made black fabric zippable bag (with two pockets inside), a full set of multi-sized ear bud replacements, a USB power cord, a USB-to-3.5mm stereo jack cord, and even an airplane adapter.
The unit paired up with my phone nearly instantly, and in the case of iOS, there's even a headphone icon in the status bar for quick-glance status. Sony includes two free iOS apps (Android likely has the same situation) that can be downloaded that do two things: one takes your music library -- even if cloud-based -- and manages it for you, and the second allows exceptionally granular modification of the earphone's settings.
Overall, great packaging and legendary Sony sound. If you're in the market for over-the-shoulder-based earphones, this unit should definitely be a contender for your music -- and phone -- needs.

Decent prop for AR/VR
on October 9, 2017
Posted by: PhilGA
from Atlanta, GA
As noted via a nearby label, I'm a member of Best Buy's Technical Insider Network and so was given a device to test for free in exchange for an unbiased review.
The Cube came with the associated Goggles that I previously reviewed on Best Buy's site. And as with the Goggle's intended age group use, so too is this particular item.
While it's useful for manipulating the environment in some VR applications as well as becoming the equivalent of a projected image in an AR application, that's about as far as this item goes, and the price reflects it.
In all fairness, my family has had significantly more fun with the goggles, per se, than attempting to include anything else within that same environment.
In other words, you obviously need to get the goggles, as this Cube is useless without them, but don't sweat getting the Cube if you're on the fence. It is not, in my opinion, a huge value-add.

Excellent viewing for a sub-$1000 projector
on October 2, 2017
Posted by: PhilGA
from Atlanta, GA
As a Best Buy Technical Insider Network member, I received the Epson Pro EX9220 for free in exchange for an unbiased review.
For a sub-$1,000 projector, this device will literally outshine most other projectors you may have used over the past several years. At 3,500 lumens, for this price point, you're not going to find many projectors that are brighter.
In my view, when considering projectors, while dot pitch is certainly important (and can be measured in terms of the highest resolution/ratio that the projector can handle -- in this case, 1080p HD 16:9 format), what is significantly more important is the luminosity, or lumens. This number makes the determination of exactly how much darkness you'd need to fully see a projected image.
In this case, the Epson Pro EX9220 has no problems in displaying images/videos in a fully-lit room. As a test, I projected mine in a room in my house where the windows were not covered and the wall wasn't fully white for a background -- and yet there were no issues at all in projecting HD-level images and video. In the dark, the projection simply becomes that much more vivid.
This is a "pro" projector, and hence it's technically rated to handle business-type applications; if you're shooting for presentations and other media where fonts must project correctly, this device is definitely for you. However, if you're looking for a device that can handle the latest 1080p-formatted movie, I'd say stick with this device -- it handles anything thrown at it quite easily. In fact, we're now looking at fully replacing our very nice television with this device -- that's how much we enjoyed the projections.
Physically, the device is smaller, making it something easy to handle and transport -- it even comes with its own carrying bag. It's light, weighing in at approximately 5 pounds. Its ports include USB-A, USB-B, Left/Right Audio and Video RCA outputs, VGA input, as well as two HDMI inputs. Further, there is a capability of performing "split-screen," where two different inputs can be projected side-by-side. The device is height-adjustable, and contains a handful of anti-keystoning adjusters for optimal projection viewing. Its on-board menu allows for device parameter granularity. There's also a user-replaceable air-intake filter next to the lens housing.
The only negative I can see (and I would not reduce the number of stars for this) is that the only cables that come with the device are a USB and VGA cable; you must supply your own HDMI or RCA cables.
If you have a source that can feed into the projector and it's up to 1080p, this device should have no issues displaying it, and you should be able to tweak the video to your liking, if factory settings aren't optimal.
This is an excellent project for any of your viewing needs.

Great entry-level goggles for AR/VR
on September 29, 2017
Posted by: PhilGA
from Atlanta, GA
As can be seen via a nearby label, I was given a unit for free in exchange for an unbiased review.
Overall, these a great goggles for the price-point; they do demonstrate virtual and augmented reality well enough to get a feel for this tech. And since they’re designed for the pre-adolescent crowd (I have two!), these goggles bring the tech in spades. There is no Android/iOS requirement, physically, for the apparatus — it’s the size of the device that counts (everything is viewed in “split” horizontal screen when in goggle view).
While they are well-made, realize the it’s basically a rubberized foam headpiece that contains two semi-movable lenses into which you slide your smartphone (iPhone 7 Plus makes for a very tight — but doable — squeeze).
There are a reasonable number of apps and plenty of YouTube-based videos made for VR to keep anyone busy for hours checking this stuff out. If content is VR-compatible, it’ll work with. Again, because of the age group in question, most apps will be catering to this demographic, so don’t expect much heavier content than Star Wars to be represented.
Having some time ago tried a pair of a friend’s Samsung goggles (that cost hundreds more and included earpieces), you won’t have exactly the same experience, but it won’t be that far off, either.
All in all, I think these goggles make a fine entry point into AR/VR for those who wish to spend under $100. My kids certainly bother me about helping them find content to view!

Great steamer mop, especially for odd jobs
on September 25, 2017
Posted by: PhilGA
from Atlanta, GA
As can be seen by the Technical Insider Network label nearby, I was given a unit at no charge in exchange for an unbiased review.
While the Bissell Steam Mop is not going to replace your regular mop (which, incidentally, I would recommend one of Bissell's own in their lineup), for those areas either on the floor or above the floor that are stubborn messes to deal with, this could be the unit for you.
The device is predominantly of a hand-held form-factor, and in spite of housing a water heater, isn't the heaviest device to deal with (I'd say it clocks in around 5 - 7 pounds). Once water is poured into the device, it can then be plugged in, and 30 seconds later, water is heated and ready for either "light" or "heavy" usage (meaning when the trigger is pulled, "puffs" of steam are extruded in slow or fast succession, respectively).
The attachments that come with the Steam Mop are more than adequate to cover even the most hard-to-get crevices. However, in all respects, since we are dealing with hot steam, it's always a good idea to attempt any cleaning/scrubbing in a smaller, inconspicuous spot first to see if the results are to your liking.
So far, I've tried the Steam Mop on grout, tile, baseboards and hardwood flooring -- all without issue, and with great results. The caveat to this is that while there is a wand attachment that essentially turns the Steam Mop into a full-fledged mop, Bissell only provides two micro-fiber mop sleeves (which get soiled pretty quickly), so while this isn't a complaint by any stretch, it's to provide context that this device is really meant for tougher areas to deal with.
For full-fledged mopping, I'd recommend going with another device that's specifically for larger-scale floor cleaning. But for harder-to-reach or smaller areas, the Bissell Steam Mop is more than adequate to get the job done.

Excellent overall quality, could never work
on August 29, 2017
Posted by: PhilGA
from Atlanta, GA
As is indicated by certain buttons around this review, as a member of Best Buy's Technical Insider Network, I was given a unit (in this case, two) to review in an unbiased manner.
As just mentioned, after having gone through two of these units, I really didn't want to give Logi a bad review, but I'm going to have to on this one, and will certainly explain.
From a build standpoint, the Circle 2 Wire Free is exceptionally well-built. The packaging held all components quite well (for shipping purposes), and it was dead simple to put together and charge. The iPhone app that's used to connect to the device and the device to the network was very well thought-out and really sets a great standard for how simple setups should be.
Unfortunately for me, that's as far as the good side of things goes. In my case, my ISP is Comcast (Xfinity HSI), and I directly connect to Comcast using a customer-owned Netgear modem/router. Then, because Best Buy's TIN let me review a three-node Linksys Velop mesh network, I'd duly set it up and directly connected to the Netgear router.
The first challenge was connecting to the Velop network. After several tries on my own, while it would connect from an IP standpoint, the camera would never reach out to Logi in order to properly initialize on my end. Logi was exceptional with their support. After a brief email with a front-line CSR, my issue was quickly escalated to their engineering department. We shortly set up a phone conversation and even attempted to connect via wifi Hotspot on my phone, which still didn't work. They immediately decided to issue me a new camera.
With this camera, I repeated the same process, to no avail. We then had a video conference about the product, to which I agreed to perform what would be a final test (Best Buy was needing a review by this point).
According to Logi, they believe there's a known issue (but no currently known cause) that if your mesh network's 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz bands are pointing to the same SSID (is my understanding), their cameras don't like that. However, if they're connecting to a singular band, they work (or perhaps others do, but mine still doesn't). This is the first time I've ever had a network-based device absolutely refuse to connect with the outside world when it needed to.
Again, I hate leaving a bad review for Logi, but I'm going to be honest, and caveat emptor is in store -- not for the build, but for the networking.

Generally good, all-purpose headset for headphones
on July 27, 2017
Posted by: PhilGA
from Atlanta, GA
As noted by a nearby label, I am part of Best Buy's Technical Insider Network and was given a set of headphones to use in exchange for an honest review.
Off the top, the headset is quite utilitarian-looking, but that's because it's an over-the-neck headset capable of using either its own set of earphones or a wired set you might already have that has a 3.5mm headphone jack terminator -- as in, for those that were displaced from, say, Apple's recent ditching of its own headphone jack :)
Out of the box and after charging, the over-the-neck portion was simple to set up. Using my iPhone 7 Plus, it was a breeze to enable Bluetooth, press-and-hold the "Play" triangle on one of the band's sides, wait ten seconds, a voice says Bluetooth is on, the phone picks up the device, and you're ready to go. There's also a headset icon next to the Bluetooth "B" icon on the phone, so you're instantly aware that you're connected and how much battery is left in the headset.
As for sound quality, the stock earphone audio is just a tad less in quality than Apple's own stock set, so that should give you a relative idea. They're certainly not terrible, they simply don't have the same range as Apple's own (or perhaps your own, just make sure they're black :) ).
Call quality was great. The recipient couldn't tell that I was using the over-the-neck set. There is a microphone through the over-the-neck portion, and pressing the "Play" triangle conveniently hangs up the call.
Overall, this is a decent unit if you're looking for something very utilitarian with the flexibility to be able to use your own wired headphones.

Solid, smooth multitasking mouse!
on June 30, 2017
Posted by: PhilGA
from Atlanta, GA
As can be seen via a nearby label, I was given a free device in exchange for an unbiased review.
For general purpose computing (unless you need a specialized input device for a niche application), this is the mouse you've been waiting for.
Even if you forget the extra buttons that are a part of the mouse, two things immediately come to mind when handling the device: smooth and solid -- and this from a wireless device!
This mouse is most certainly smooth, in that no matter what surface it's laid upon, connectivity and on-screen movement don't miss a bit. I've dealt with previous mice that have issues "keeping up" with my screen movements or left-clicking-and-highlighting; this device has absolutely no issues here. Exceptional movement across the screen, stopping and clicking precisely where desired.
The device is also solid -- to me, it seems somewhat heavier (enough to notice a difference) than other mice. To me, that's what helps with the smoothness -- it sits squarely wherever it's located, and there are no issues with steadiness.
For connectivity, the device comes with both a USB-based receiver (very small dongle) as well as integrated Bluetooth connectivity. Because I profusely use my USB ports, I try to keep anything new from hogging yet another port to a minimum, and this mouse deals with Bluetooth in spades.
On the bottom-rear of the mouse, there is a button that corresponds to three fanned-out LED lights. This intentionally represents up to three machines to which you can pair the mouse. All it takes is to press the button to enable a given light, press and hold for about 3 seconds (to put in pairing mode), make sure the machine sees the mouse, and pair -- that simple. I've done this on my work PC (a Windows 10-based unit) as well as my mid-2012 non-Retina MacBook Pro. In both cases, the mouse was easily paired. The only "drawback" (if you can call it that) is that you have to press the button to correspond to which light represents which machine. However, once selected, it simply works -- in real time.
While there is a "Flow" function that's said to be included with the mouse (allowing you to cut-and-paste between machines, even between Windows and macOS), I wasn't interested in loading further software on either my work laptop nor my MacBook Pro, so that went untested.
Regardless, I actually needed a new mouse for work, and this unit came just in time.
So, for general, all-purpose mousing activities, this unit has become my favorite go-to input device. It comes with a lithium ion rechargeable battery which Logitech claims can provide 70 days' worth of charge (I've only just gotten the mouse, so I can't currently speak to that), so at least there's not AA or AAA batteries to always have to change out.
If you need a good mouse that works cross-platform, this is it! And Bluetooth connectivity is excellent.

The iFLOOR BREEZE floor washer vacuums and mops hard floors at the same time. No more vacuuming and sweeping before mopping your floors. iFLOOR BREEZE does both simultaneously, in less time, and with better results. Lightweight, cordless, and powerful, the iFLOOR BREEZE removes tough, sticky messes from floors. This 2-in-1 powerful floor washer leaves less water on floors than competitors, so floors get cleaner, dry faster, and look their best.

Does the floor breeze wet/dry cordless stick vacuum-silver model ON button stay "ON" without having to hold the button down?

Yes.

Then again, having tested several models/makers, I don't know of any manufacturer who has created a model that requires you to constantly hold the power button down. That would speak more to there being an issue with the button's functionality in that situation.

Nugget Ice. Pellet ice. Drive-in ice. Whatever you call it, you know it's "the good ice." Now that chewable ice is available from the convenience of your countertop with the Opal 2.0 Ice Maker. It is capable of producing up to 38 lbs. of ice in 24 hours and stores up to 3 lbs. of ice at one time. The Opal 2.0 Ice Maker has WiFi connection capability and comes with the side tank attachment for 3x more ice production.

What's the difference between the Opal 1.0 (Sold online at other retailers) and the Opal 2.0 besides design?

Here are the major differences:

- The casing corners are now rounded
- The circle LED indicator has been replaced by "touch-sensitive" buttons on the front, as well as distinct word labels stating what the appliance is doing. This includes replacing the rear slider switch for cleaning with touch-button functionality in the front
- The plastic ice bin no longer has holes along the rear-bottom; a spring-loaded hole has been added that opens only when the bin is slid all the way into the appliance, thereby preventing drips when fully removing the bin
- Overall, the appliance does appear quieter, though that's more subjective
- Biggy: when draining the water while cleaning, it completely dumps in about 30 seconds. Previous units took minutes to do this.

I hope this helps!

Improve your confidence with the Upright GO posture trainer. The personalized program trains your body to notice when you're slouched, while the small, lightweight design makes it unnoticeable. This Upright GO posture trainer features an app on iOS and Android for real-time progress tracking and provides instant feedback once placed on your back.

How well does it stay on? If you work an outside labor job where you sweat a decent amount will it stay connected to your back?

To me, the bigger issue is whether a device that sticks out about 1/2 to 3/4 inch from your back would work with whatever gear you're wearing or carrying.

If that kind of size isn't an issue, I'm not sure how long the adhesive will continue sticking under your conditions. There's not more than half-an-inch wide by about 1 1/2 inches of adhesive to begin with.

Individual nodes may be connected wirelessly or by Ethernet for fast, reliable connection. This is an ultrasimple and powerful system that uses only one Wi-Fi network name and password to give you seamless and secure Wi-Fi. And leading-edge security lets you block content and easily pause the Internet for dinner or homework. It works with all Internet service provider supplied equipment and speeds, and its simple app-based setup will get you up and running in minutes.

Trying to find a system that works in a house over 4000 sq feet. WiFi extenders didn’t work. Have a Spectrum WiFi router. What router is compatible w/Spectrum that I can use with mesh system. Do nodes just plug in? Will be used for iPads and phones only.

I'd go with the taller Velops, as they work well with our gigabit ethernet (via Cat6 cabling in the house directly connected to our provider, Windstream).

This is a mesh system, which means that there's a backhaul channel across all three routers essentially tying them together, and then each router has two wifi bands for depending on how new or old your equipment is. Having three such channels means there's no bandwidth sharing at all -- each device has full access to all available bandwidth (unless you specifically set something up in routing differently).

I don't think you'll have a problem covering 4k square feet, unless you have a bunch of walls all over the place, and if that's the case, you'll have wifi issues no matter how you set things up.

Yes -- the nodes just plug in. All setup is controlled via the mobile app, and after you answer a couple of setup questions, the system is pretty self-managing out of the box.

Will this system directly plug into my century link router? Also, is the system compatible with the century link service? Thanks

In our area, we have Windstream, and we have fiber to the house at that. What happens is that we also have Cat6 ethernet cabling in the house. The only thing the tech did was make sure that the cabling that was coming from outside the house was properly terminated, and then that simply plugged into the bottom of one of my Velop nodes.

Then, we simply set up for PPPoE (username and password), and I was good to go.

It was extremely simple to set up and completely removed the need for us to use any other modem for signaling.

xfinity internet range extend in house?

Yes, absolutely. In fact, I did just this with my original set of taller tower Velops.

When setting up the main node that physically connects to the Internet, the app will seamlessly allow you to check whether you connect directly to the Internet or, as with any cable modem, you connect through that modem. The app takes care of all the rest of the setup from there.

You will have far better range than even with the Technicolor modems that Comcast provides.

Experience lag-free, immersive audio with this wireless Plantronics gaming headset. It has support for lifelike Dolby Atmos sound, and the sound-isolating ear cups and noise-canceling microphone keep your focus on the game. This lightweight Plantronics gaming headset has a 24-hour battery life and convenient analog adjustments for custom game audio settings.

This wireless headphones, cam I use it on a laptop and do the laptop need to be bluetooth or is there a adapter that I can plug to my laptop to make it wireless? Can you please let me know. Thanks

Yes, can be used on a laptop. In fact, I received a review unit and did just that.

Since this is not a Bluetooth-based device, it uses what I call a USB wireless bridge (small square box that's included with the headset) in order to communicate with a PC. This will require a free USB port, and the charging cable (if simultaneously charging and listening) will require a second USB port.

Is this a Freesync monitor? I keep getting conflicting information.

I would have to say, no. Typically, such features are advertised explicitly enough to where you'd know, but for under $300, don't count on it.

Make your home an internet haven with this versatile Linksys Velop wireless Wi-Fi system. Three identical tri-band dual-stream AC2200 routers, each equipped with a quad-core ARM Cortex-A7 processor, deliver lightning-fast internet. Equipped with Bluetooth 4.0/LE, this Linksys Velop wireless Wi-Fi system is simple to set up and pairs easily with computers, tablets and smart devices.

Can the Velop be easily integrated into a AT&T U-verse setup either to act as the router or be placed into bridge mode? I'm primarily interested if the Velop can be placed into bridge mode which would make the Velop an access point.

We have Xfinity Internet using our own modem/router combo. When setting up the VELOP system, any existing network configurations are completely separate from the VELOP mesh network. In fact, on initial node setup, all that's required is to have a physical Ethernet cable routed from the VELOP node to your existing modem/router Ethernet port (non-WAN). The Linksys app then has the VELOP node configure itself for Internet access.

Unless you really want to go the bridge route with your existing setup, the VELOP mesh network allows for its own wifi SSID setup without bothering anything currently existing.

I hope this helps!
