Discrete home monitoring system
on September 22, 2023
Posted by: LouRevue
I found this security system to be somewhat interesting. While this system is missing a camera(s), the sensors provide a much smaller footprint both from an installation and visual standpoint.
I've had separate sensors for motion, water leakage and temperature before however they're pretty specific in use case AND they came from different brands. Each of those brands usually had other available sensors but those would cost additional money which would bloat the overall cost of the system. This system has sensor that detect 8 different points which is kinda interesting in that you don't need separate sensors for everything now. Each sensor can detect motion, moisture, temperatures as well as a few other data points.
Having this flexibility is pretty nice actually since, wherever you put these, all bases are covered essentially. Installation of these sensors is double sided tape so you don't necessarily need to drill them into place which is nice if you're a renter. With the keypad, you can arm/disarm the system manually or use the companion app to do that.
Obviously if you get more sensors then that'll increase the cost of this system but, for me, 2 is good enough and I'd imagine it'd be the same for the vast majority of users. I live in a condo so I have one sensor on the door and one of the bedroom window. Probably will get 1 or 2 more but I think, for now, 2 is good.

Good, middle tier gaming monitor
on September 19, 2023
Posted by: LouRevue
Got this to use with my gaming laptop. Really liked the size to this since my gaming laptop is only a 17" screen on it. With this, almost, double the size of my laptop screen, makes for much easier and better gaming experience.
32" monitor is right in that sweet spot, for me at least. It's not too big and not too small. Still gives plenty of real estate to work with without being a strain on the eyes. I have a larger 49" screen (which is great) however there can be times where it's a strain to use since the super ultrawide format of the screen makes it a bit harder to focus in on what you need to focus on.
This is a flat screen so I know lots of folks swear by the curved screens these days. But I find this flat screen just as easy to use without sacrificing any performance or specs. This has decent specs so it's not the greatest performing monitor but neither it is an entry level monitor. 2560 x 1440 screen with 1ms response time. Hadn't had any issues with stutter or lag or ghosting when playing Destiny 2/RDR2. Has all the ports you need such as 2 HDMI and DisplayPort as well as 3.5mm jacks.
Overall, a great primary monitor for gaming or, if you have a larger monitor, then this will also make for a great secondary screen too. Only real complaint I had was with the stand. This monitor doesn't go up/down or side to side so it's quite limited in that respect. I would recommend you use a monitor arm like I did so you have a little more flexibility when using this monitor.

Great security setup for the home
on August 13, 2023
Posted by: LouRevue
Over the past several years, I've been adding to my home automation/home security setup quite a bit. I live in a condo but am still concerned about security just with what's been going on recently with package theft and stuff as well as home invasions. As such, I have quite a few different cameras from different brands spread out within my place. This security system accomplishes two things that I find are big issues with my current setup.
1. I no longer need to have multiple cameras from different brands in my place. This also means I don't need multiple apps on my phone either which can get real annoying when it comes to viewing live cameras or enabling/disabling them. In total, I have 5 different cameras from 4 different brands. I have Eufy, Nest, Wyze and Ring. Each of these have different apps on my phone BUT can be controlled simultaneously through Apple HomeKit or Google Home apps. Also, from a financial perspective, I no longer need separate subscriptions from these apps to utilize them.
2. My recordings are no longer in the cloud and sit right in my hard drive of my security system. There are pros/cons to having your data in the cloud however, I'm starting to feel a little uneasy with this recently; especially when it comes to the layout and contents of my place. Recordings can still be accessed through the cloud with this system however, I find it a little more secure if it's also in a physical location.
Probably the biggest issue with this system is A) unpacking it and B) installing these cameras. The packaging on this system is a tad over the top I think. Everything is boxed/wrapped separately which takes some time to unpack everything. And since these cameras mount to your wall, you'll need to drill holes for these locations which can be quite tedious. But, once done, these cameras connect pretty fast to the base unit and are ready to go. You can customize names of cameras as well as view all of the in the companion app. The recordings themselves are great quality in day or night conditions. I still need to setup 3 more cameras but I'm liking how everything is looking so far.
So, I get a cohesive security system with 6 cams that I can view whenever I want. I'm able to cancel a couple unneeded subscriptions and the quality of the recordings is great. Kind of wish I did this earlier. If you're in the market for a first home security system then this might be a good choice to look into

Good sounding, budget earbuds
on August 13, 2023
Posted by: LouRevue
I've used quite a few earbuds in my time so it's always nice to test out new ones from time to time. I'm a big fan on Anker's line of chargers so was kind of nice to see some newer earbuds from them.
Big rage these days is with noise canceling earbuds/headphones. Once you've tried them, there's really no going back to regular sounding earbuds IMO. These are both simplistic in design but quite advanced in their technology.
For scope, I usually use either my Airpods Pro 2, Beats Fit Pro or Sony WF-1000XM3 for my dailies. The Airpods and Beats both work great for music/calls but when I just want to listen to music, I go with the Sonys.
These Soundcord earbuds are right in the middle of the ones I already have. The noise cancelling isn't quite as nice as the Airpods Pro and the music sound isn't quite as nice as the Beats/Sonys I have. Anker usually sits in the middle between low end and upper mid/high end devices. These are no different.
Sound wise, they provide great sound. Nice highs/mids and just a little bit of bass. When I used these for a conference call, I got intermittent buzzing/popping sounds throughout the call. I don't experience this with any of the other earbuds I have so not sure if this is just a one off issue or if it's firmware related.
That said, overall, these are decent, mid-grade earbuds IMO. They're not the best, not the worst but, for 90% of people out there, these will work just great for whatever their needs.

Cool creators tool but need to know how to use it
on July 24, 2023
Posted by: LouRevue
I've been looking into a gimble for my phones to try out some video content creation. I've seen a bunch of these but never really got around to looking into them until now. Like most people, I'll hold my phone in hand for recording videos or what not. It works but, when recording videos, the choppy/bouncy shaking of the phone doesn't really equate to solid videos. I got the opportunity to review one of these units and I'm quite intrigued by it. Definitely a great tool to have and, possibly, a must-have for anyone creating video content.
The first thing to note is that it should hold any smartphone. However, larger phones like my iPhone 14 Pro Max, with an Otterbox case, will not fit in the holder at all. I have smaller iPhones like my 6 and 4S that will fit just fine however you should know that not all phones will fit (depending on if you're using a case or not).
Controls on this are sorta tricky TBH. For most things, it's pretty simple to figure out what button does what but this seems to be a more advanced; especially if you're not used to using things like this. If you're new to these things then you'll definitely want to watch a video or read a FAQ on these things first.
After "training" then this becomes a great little tool to use for shooting video. Over time, I think it'll become a must-have for me but, for now, still in training mode but definitely finding great use for this.

Great components at competitive price
on July 24, 2023
Posted by: LouRevue
From a purely spec/components perspective, this is a great little machine to have;
- 16" WUXGA 165Hz IPS screen
- Intel i5-13500HX
- GeForce RTX 4050
- 16GB DDR5
- 512GB SSD
These specs will provide great gaming experience for whatever game you got. I've been playing Destiny 2 and RDR2 on here and it's been flawless. Screen provides nice, crisp colors and the processor/GPU keep up with even max settings on these two games.
With this laptop, you get all the I/O ports you'll need to connect your devices. You get HDMI and thunderbolt connections in the back, Ethernet, USB 3.0 and MicroSD and headphone port on the left side and two more USB-C ports and cable lock on the right side.
The biggest draw for this laptop is going to be the price. It's comfortably priced where you can get good components while not breaking the bank on a $2500-$3000 laptop. RAM is upgradeable as is the HD however I haven't looked into doing that just yet.
For a ~$1000 laptop, I don't think you can really beat this considering the components and performance of this laptop.

Not too shabby. Works pretty good
on July 9, 2023
Posted by: LouRevue
The remote to my LG smart TV finally died on me. I had seen other generic replacement remotes but this one seemed a bit more appealing in that it can be used for multiple items as well. It's a cool looking remote for sure and it's pretty thin. Very lightweight however it has a glossy finish to it so it's a fingerprint magnet unfortunately.
It doesn't use the traditional AAA batteries as this remote is rechargeable. It charges via USB-C with the included cable. Cables a bit short but it'll do for now. Was able to successfully pair it to my TV, Blu-ray and my finnicky Samsung smart TV as well. Nice plus is that there is a Netflix button on this remote too so I don't lose that. It also has quick buttons for Hulu, Disney+ and YouTube. Nice little bonus is that it has a backlight button on it. It's somewhat dim and really only helpful if it's very dark but, eh, better than nothing I guess.
Kinda wish I had more devices to use this with but it works great as my new replacement remote. Can't complain about this yet. Only thing I haven't been able to test is battery life so here's hoping it lasts a bit.
Thanks for Best Buy for providing this free TERK Rechargeable remote for this review.

Big upgrade to Escort MAX 3
on July 2, 2023
Posted by: LouRevue
I currently have a Escort MAX 3 and was in the market for an upgrade. I was able to review this one and have been pleasantly surprised with it and its features.
The one big upgrade is that this model has a built-in dash cam which is pretty nice. I have a separate dash cam in my truck already however, an added dash cam can never hurt. As it's built into the radar detector, there's no added cable or mount that's needed so it frees up, or negates, the need for clutter on my windshield. Picture/video quality is quite good with this dash cam and I really like that it automatically shows both the time/date and GPS coordinates in the picture and video. My dash cam does this however it's a setting that sometimes gets out of whack and needs to be manually updated. Kind of a pain but, eh, it works.
As for the radar detector itself? So far it's identified every red light, speeding camera in my area without issue. It's also alerted me to a couple newer ones that I wasn't aware had been setup which is great. The main issue I've encountered so far is with the K band detection. I've gotten oodles of false alerts with K band around me which is kind of annoying. This is a known issue with K band however it's almost to the point where I want to shut that off just so I won't have to deal with the false alarms.
That said, it's a great little radar detector. It is considerable larger than your normal ones so that is something to be aware of. As such, it's also a little heavier than your typical radar detector too. However the mount included is good and haven't had any issues so far. I do notice the radar detector bounce quite a bit while driving and this is also evident when looking at the dash cam footage. Not a huge thing but just something to note.

Sweet upgrade for the gaming PC
on July 2, 2023
Posted by: LouRevue
I have a gaming PC that's pretty good however I'm in the process of building a new one. I currently have a Core i9-10850K with RTX3090 with 64GB DDR4 RAM. I've spec'd out a new build with a i9-13900K and RTX4090. With the new update in specs, I figured a newer, state of the art, HD is also in order. This little unit came up and thought it would be the perfect fit for my new rig. Sadly, I'm still waiting on my GPU however I was able to plop this into my current rig for testing/formatting.
Biggest thing you'll need to consider is the size of this since it does come with a heatsink. The current motherboard I have now barely fit this thing, almost to the point where I thought I would break it trying to get it in/out. Still reviewing what MB I'll be getting for my new rig however this is an important piece I thought I'd let everyone know. There is a version without the heatsink however I figured the added heat dissipation would outweigh the logistical issues it may present.
After setup, this drive works wonderfully. Speed is super nice even with my, somewhat, older MB. I had the rig on for several hours and did notice some odd peaks in heat with this so that is something I'm monitoring. I'm sure (hoping) with the new MB I get that this won't be an issue but we'll see.

Bangin' speaker for your block party
on June 7, 2023
Posted by: LouRevue
I've been a big fan of Sony speakers whether it be earbuds, headphones as well as these Bluetooth speakers. I have the SRSXG500 model speaker and really liked that one. It was a little bit on the larger portable side however the sound from it was superb. Of the features that Sony offers with their speakers, the BIGGEST one I've been a fan of is their Super Bass. In all the speakers and headphones/earbuds I have, the Super Bass feature really stands out for me since it delivers quite the punch when listening to music. Since they have that feature in this speaker, I kind of expected it to be on par with all their other speakers.
This one is quite large to say the least. It's almost 2 feet tall and weighs around 40 pounds so it's not something you'll move often however it is portable. It has wheels on it so you can roll it around wherever you need to. There are also handles on this so you can easily pick it up as well. The RGB lighting on this is a nice touch. It's not too flashy however it is noticeable and just looks good when it's on.
Sound wise, it's what I expected from a Sony speaker. This being a larger unit, it can get plenty loud for your house party or for whatever you need this speaker for. It's omni directional speakers so it works well whichever direction it's facing however, I find that it's better suited if the listeners are in front of the speakers. There are 2 tweeters on the back handle that work well enough. The Super Bass on this is fantastic. I listen to EDM music primarily and each bass thump rings through great on this speaker. It's loud however it doesn't get too muddy in the high/mid ranges which is great.
You can hook this speaker up to your guitar, TV, bluetooth and pretty much whatever else you want. There are I/O ports for in the back to hook everything up. There is optical input, USB as well as hook ups for your guitar. There is a companion app for this to sync your music as well as control RGB lighting however, I have an iPhone and it's really simpler to connect to it via Bluetooth and use the music app.
Overall, this is a great speaker for your place. It's quite multi-functional in terms of what you hook up to it and how to use it. It's a tad on the heavy side however the sound output from this is really sweet.
Thanks to Best Buy for providing this SRSXV800 for this review.

Excellent laptop for everyday use
By LouRevue from Washington, DC
Having had the chance to use this laptop, I must say it’s quite an impressive model for almostn any use. With an abundance of features housed in a sleek, stylish body, it’s a solid laptop for anyone in the market for a new/replacement laptop.
Using a 7th gen i5 dual core processor, the laptop functions on par with just about any laptop in its price range. With 8GB of RAM (12GB max) and a 1TB hard drive, it offers plenty of speed and room for all your files and enough power/speed to perform almost any task.
As far as the aesthetics go, this is an impressive looking laptop with clean lines, brushed aluminum cover and beveled edges. It’s a very nice looking laptop no doubt and the design, overall, is quite appealing. It comes with a full size keyboard as well as backlit keys which is a nice touch. Only gripe with the keyboard are the arrow buttons as the Up/Down buttons are smaller due to keyboard layout. The power button is on the right side of the laptop which is a bit unique as well as a dedicated volume button. There are 2 USB 3.0 ports as well as 1 USB 2.0 port, HDMI, SD Card and USB-C port. There is no CD drive for anyone wondering. The laptop (closed) is only about ¾ inch tall however it’s a bit wider than most due to the full size keyboard.
Power/performance. Using a dual-core processor I was under the impression this would be relatively slow and have choppy performance when opening multiple programs. Being this is the latest gen processor from Intel, this is not the case. Opening 2-3 programs at once was done with relative ease and switching between them was pretty flawless. The 8GB RAM comes in quite handy here and even with a 5400 RPM HDD, this laptop was able to perform tasks with very good speed. Battery life is pretty good. Using it “normally” and leaving it on for about 5-6 hours, there was about 50% battery left. Also, one very noteworthy benefit to this laptop, it doesn’t get that hot when left on for long periods of time which is VERY nice.
The display is probably the most impressive feature on here. A full 1080p display is quite vibrant and displays bright and dark colors extremely well. Those wanting to watch Netflix/Hulu will have no issues with the display. In addition to visuals, the sound from this laptop is equally impressive. For watching movies or just playing music, the speakers on this laptop deliver quite nicely without too much reverberation or distorted sound.
One of my initial thoughts of this being a 2-in-1 was that the tablet was an afterthought/gimmick. Having used previous 2-in-1 laptops, I was expecting the tablet functionality to be quite lackluster. Again, this was not the case. In this unit, you have, both, a well built laptop as well as tablet on-the-go device. Once in tablet mode, the screen orients itself to that of a normal tablet using Windows Tiles. Touch sensitivity is surprisingly smooth and using paint programs worked well without any lag or drops in sensitivity. Using the tablet form works really well when you want to sit back and watch videos or movies. Very nice.
A couple concerns with this laptop were;
The hard drive. While it’s a large 1TB drive, I would’ve expected something, at least, in the 7200 RPM range. Being fast enough for normal business related tasks, anyone wanting to use this laptop for video editing or other processor intensive jobs might find it to be a bit slow. This can easily be remedied by replacing the HD for a faster spindle drive or a SSD. However it would’ve been nice to have a tad faster hard drive here.
The keyboard, for me, took a bit getting used to since I have previously used standard laptop keyboards without the number pad. This is a personal preference so nothing against the design. Just noting that those of you used to that type of laptop keyboard, there will be a bit of learning curve involved however I think the addition of the number pad is great thing and should be standard on all laptops.
While the brushed aluminum case is aesthetically appealing, I’m a little concerned about it getting scratched/dinged from normal use or if when you’re changing it to be used as a tablet. This is the case with some laptops that use this metal casing so just something to be aware of.
Overall, this is an impressive laptop, reasonably priced with enough up-to-date technology that will last you for several years to come. Being that it’s a 2-in-1, it’s an added bonus which allows you to use this device in ways you should be able to do and with relative ease. There is some bloatware included (this should be no surprise) so make sure to uninstall/delete the stuff you don’t need. Aside from a somewhat slow hard drive, the other features on this laptop more than make up for it. Very nice buy for a new work laptop or student.

Bloatware?
January 17, 2017
It took a bit of time to setup my laptop as well. Have you tried uninstalling the bloatware on this laptop? I did and I don't have any issues with boot speed or anything else on my laptop.

Can an owner of the original non active 65t comment on the fit and stability difference with the active version? Curious if that and the extra IP rating is worth a look, or negligible.

I own both the active and regular 65T's and I don't see any noticeable difference between them. Aside from the IP rating, there's really not much difference. Both fit exactly the same and fit pretty snugly in the ear.

Brighten your day and night with this Philips Being Hue ceiling light. The dimming function lets you set an ambience for different moods, and it works with the Philips Hue dimmer switch and mobile app for versatile control. The ZigBee technology of this 32W Philips Being Hue ceiling lamp provides smooth, efficient interoperability with multiple Hue lighting units.

Can this light be controlled by a existing wired wall switch? I plan to replace the light that is already there with this one, but I would prefer to use the wired switch.

Yes you can...that's what I did. One thing to note is that the light won't come on immediately like your current light fixture does. There's a second or two delay after you flip the switch. I'm planning on replacing the switch with a dimmer switch so maybe that will correct the delay.

What is the return policy if I dont like the phone?

Depends on the carrier. I know AT&T has a 14 day return policy. Ask your carrier rep to see how long their return period is.

can i use the samsung note 2 in africa right after buying.

Only if you have the international unlocked version (the N7100 model) All other models will be tied to a carrier. You can still use those phones in Africa however you'll get hammered with roaming charges.

Does Samsung upgrade its android smartphone OS as soon as a new one is released? (4.1 Jelly Bean to the soon to be released 5.0 Key Lime Pie).

No. Samsung has its own UI built in (TouchWiz) so whenever a new OS comes out, Samsung won't release the update until they've adjusted their TouchWiz to work with the new OS. Judging from previous releases, new updates are generally released 4-6 months after a new OS has been released.
