Great, all-around hair trimmer
on January 31, 2023
Posted by: LouRevue
Pretty stout little hair trimming kit from Phillips. This has pretty much all the attachments you'd need for personal grooming all neatly stored in a conveniently sized travel/storage case.
While this might not as a hair trimmer (although you could probably do so) it works great for facial/body hair. If you needed a little touch up on your haircut then this would be just fine. If you wanted an actual hair cutter then you'd be better off getting one designed for that. This one works great for everything else.
For hair trimming, pretty much all the standard sized clips are available here so for a little off the top or just cleaning up sideburns, you're set. There is an ear/nose hair trimmer attachment as well. For body shaving, there's quite a plethora of attachments that will cut/trim hair just about anywhere.
All of the blade attachments simply click into place on the shaver. Real simple and easy to do as well as for when you need to clean out the hair that gets into there. There is a small brush included for this. The unit itself feels really solid. It has some heft to it so it feels good in the hand and the battery life on this is pretty good as well.
I had a smaller body trimmer before that worked ok but that has now been replaced with this unit. It's far more versatile and, honestly, just works better than the previous unit.

Good, inexpensive all-in-one printer
on October 20, 2022
Posted by: LouRevue
There's really not much to this printer other than it's a "basic" all-around printer. No this isn't some super duper fancy elite printer but this is more for the basic user that just needs a printer for normal use.
The printer itself is pretty typical in all aspects. It's an all-in-one so you get your printer/scanner/copier functions. Footprint is relatively small so you can pretty much put this anywhere you want. Ink cartridges are surprisingly inexpensive. For a normal set of Black/Color cartridges you're looking around $30-$35 which is nice. The XL cartridges are a little north of $50. Print quality is good. This is an HP printer after all. However the print speed for normal docs is about 7 pages per minute. Ideally you want around 15 pages or so if you print alot however, this printer, to me, seems geared towards the average user who just needs to print stuff out every once in awhile. I think this would be great for a college student or just as a home/office type printer.
Good all-around printer that's relatively inexpensive and with low priced cartridges.

Perfect All-In-One charger for your Apple goodies
on October 5, 2022
Posted by: LouRevue
I recently upgraded to the Apple Watch Ultra and iPhone 14 Pro Max. Great devices but charging cables for these can get a bit cluttered. I also got the Airpods Pro 2 as well so I have the holy trinity of Apple products. It would make sense to find a charger that can charge all three of these without the need for taking up 3 outlet spaces.
This charger from Insignia is what I was looking for and, so far, it's been perfect. I see there are lots of these chargers from other manufacturers so there's no shortage of models to pick from. Some of them are a bit pricey while others remain reasonably priced. My thoughts on this one are as follows;
- Good build quality. The base is weighted so it won't tip over easily. This is made of metal and some plastic however, it does not feel cheaply made. It's pretty stout feeling so I have no concerns of this unit breaking down or anything like that.
- Charging. Pretty good on this front. I charge all three of my devices every night so, by morning, all of them are good to go in terms of juice. I believe the more devices you charge the slower it charges however, for me, it's not really a concern as this is a nightstand charger so I'm not looking for super speedy charging. Specifically for the phone charger, there is a button which activates a small fan on the back of the charger to cool down the phone. I haven't really used this as I haven't had a problem with overheating during charging but nice to know this is there in case I need it.
Magsafe charging works great with my case. I have an Otterbox Defender XT on my phone and it has the little magnetic ring in the case. The case snaps on fine to the charger and also holds it in place quite well. The iPhone 14 PM with this case is a bit bulky so I was a little concerned that the phone might fall off the charger over night or something to that effect. So far, haven't had that issue at all.
Charging for the Air Pods and Watch are equally impressive. The Airpods charger is simple enough where you just need to lay the case on the middle spot and you'll see the green light show up to note it's charging. The watch charger works ok as well however, the magnet on this part seems weak. I haven't had any issue where it's fallen off but if you knock the stand a bit then the watch may fall off the stand quite easily.
Probably the greatest benefit to this is that I no longer need to take up 3 slots on my surge protector to charge my devices. This stand has one power cable the runs neatly underneath the stand and will charge all three devices at once. The OEM charging cables that came with my phone/watch/airpods can now be used as backups or as travel chargers if I need them to. That and it comes in a really solid looking design so it'll look good either on your work desk or your nightstand.
Really digging this as it's been quite the power saver for me and my devices.

Very slick and edgy keyboard.

Like most people, I've been suing a variety of gaming keyboards that are your typical mini or full size keyboards with RGB. Biggest issue for me with keyboard, in general, is that they're all wired. You can find some productivity keyboards that are but none that are geared for gamers. That is, until this keyboard showed up.
I've had a couple Corsair keyboards in the past and all have worked well. I was really curious to test out this wireless one since, I could finally have that clutter free desk space I've always wanted. Finding a decent wireless keyboard for both gaming and work usage has been a bit difficult. Usually it comes down to which features are more important. This keyboard seems to be a great combination of both worlds, all in a slim/sleek wireless form factor.
In terms of usage, this has been working excellent as both a gaming keyboard and for productivity. Response times of the keyboard in wireless are virtually a non-factor. Everything is registered immediately and I didn't experience any lag or delays when using/typing in wireless. Keys are a pleasant sounding cherry mx keys and the RGB on them is good.
RGB wise, settings are pretty much the same as with any other RGB keyboard. Different profiles can be set along with RGB patterns and such. Overall though, does look cool especially from a wireless keyboard.
Biggest con I've dealt with is the keystrokes. All my other keyboards had standard sized/height keys on them so this keyboard has very low profile keys. It's taking me a bit of time getting used to that. I'm fat fingering a lot of words on this keyboard so it's getting a bit annoying. however, over time, I'm sure I'll get used to it.

Wireless for the win!
on September 28, 2022
Posted by: LouRevue
Up until now I've primarily used wired gaming mice. I've had some connectivity issues with wireless mice before so I never really thought much about them. However, this mouse garnered some interest seeing that it's made from one of the leading manufacturers in computer peripherals as well as, most importantly, has RGB! As such, I figured I'd give this a shot and see how it compared.
My previous mouse was a Corsair M65 Ultra. Great mouse, wired, had some RGB on it and, overall, a great mouse. However, the cables were irritating as are any cables for that matter. I found myself constantly having to reposition my hand/mouse due to the cable getting in the way. I know there is a wireless version of that mouse however, I don;t have that one so not getting the same mouse in a wireless version. I've never had a Razer before so this would be a great chance to try out their products comparatively.
Right out of the box, I immediately liked the feel of the mouse. I'm a flat hand mouse user, not a claw user, and the ergonomics of this mouse just felt great. The rubberized sides of the mouse offered a great grip without being too grippy or rubbery in texture. The Left/Right buttons also have a little bit of texture to them so there's some grip there, again, without being too pronounced. Great tactile feel to those buttons. Button placement was good, except for the precision button. So as far as overall fit, this was a nice update.
Next big thing for me was the RGB, obviously. This one had more RGB than the Corsair and just looked better IMO. There's a ring (almost a ring) on the bottom which provides ample RGB-ness as well as the scroll wheel and logo light up nicely. The software allows you multiple RGB patterns as any software would do. The ability to increase brightness really makes the RGB pop.
The adjustable DPI on the top allows quick changing of this setting as well as the smooth/click wheel setting. I found it odd that whenever you change the scroll wheel setting, the mouse clicks. Never had one do this before so I found this a bit odd.
Biggest enhancement for me was this is wireless. I can finally forgo the cumbersome mouse cable and have better range of motion with the mouse. It being wireless, I've not experienced any sort of lag or delays when gaming so this is a great bonus as well.
The only thing I didn't like about this mouse was the placement of the precision button below the Back/Forward buttons. On my Corsair M65, it was right below the Forward button where it should be. On this mouse, it's a bit more forward so I have to kinda reach that button in order to hit it. Not ideal placement for me but maybe others will state otherwise.
]Overall, I'm really digging this mouse. Checks off all the boxes for me as far as a gaming mouse and it looks real cool as well.

Great way to get coffee the way you want it
on September 26, 2022
Posted by: LouRevue
I've always enjoyed a fresh cup of coffee every now and then. More recently, I've been liking the cappuccino/lattes and such but don't really like paying $5+ for one whenever I want it. Enter this super snazzy coffee machine that does a whole lot more than just brew a pot of coffee.
On top of your normal brewing a pot of coffee, this machine can do individual brews, K-Cups, as well as espresso and cappuccino type drinks. Controls for the machine are pretty simple/intuitive and everything is pretty easy to clean.
After performing a thorough cleaning cycle on this machine, I brew up a regular pot of coffee and it worked well. For a full carafe, it took about 8-10 minutes or so. It used up pretty much the whole water reservoir but that's to be expected I guess. The keep warm feature is nice and the machine can take just about any grind of coffee you have. I had some leftover pods from an older machine. These were pretty fine grind so I emptied them into a filter and got to brewing. I do need to get some more K-Cups as I'm eager to try out the single brew on this as well as using the frother.
So far, it's been pretty cool to use. This isn't your ordinary coffee machine so it might take a bit to get used to. However, seems like a really nice addition to any kitchen and very useful.

Great sound quality and comfortable
on September 22, 2022
Posted by: LouRevue
With the working from home bit, I have to sit in on a lot of (sometimes unnecessary) conference calls. Normally, I'd use my laptios mic/speakers however I've run into some issues with background noise, low sound quality and poor mic performance. I have another wired headset I used to use however that seems to have passed on and isn't quite the same (quality wise) as it used to be.
This headset seemed to check off a few boxes in that it's wireless, lightweight and (supposedly) comfortable. After some use with this on my calls today, I'm quite impressed so far with this headset.
Included in the box is your charging cable, headset and carrying bag. Pretty much the standard fare in terms of contents so nothing out of the ordinary here. Cable is plenty long enough for my needs since I'm at my desk the majority of the time and can plug in and charge whenever needed. Big bonus for me here is the wireless/bluetooth capability. My previous headset was wired so couldn't really leave my laptop and get something to drink or do laundry or whatever. Since these are wireless, no issues now as I can freely roam around my place and do stuff while still on a call. The range on this is 50 feet or so however my place isn't quite that big. From wandering around from room to room I haven't experienced any drops or frequent disconnects. The only time it did disconnect was when I went to my bedroom which is about 30 feet away and about 6 walls away from my laptop. Not surprised by this as even some of my other bluetooth earbuds have this issue.
The headset is lightweight for sure. I sat on about 4 calls today, each ranging from 30-60 minutes in duration. Never once did the headset feel heavy or uncomfortable. Being pretty lightweight, it almost got to the point where I didn't feel them on my head which is great. And as far as comfort goes, these are SUPER comfy. Normally, I hate on-ear headphones since they are uncomfortable for me and make my ears hurt after some use. The earpads on these are sorta squishy to the touch so they don't press against my earlobes like most other on-ear headphones do. As such, I have no concerns/issues with wearing these for long periods of time as they check the box in terms of comfort.
I don't have any negatives about this headset to be honest. Aside from having to wear it for my conference calls, these work as one would a headset to work which is great. They're lightweight, comfy and provide great sound quality.

Pretty decent headphones
on September 21, 2022
Posted by: LouRevue
Jabra isn't necessarily one of the top brands that come to mind when talking about headphones. They're mostly known for headsets or business oriented devices like speakerphones or webcams. I had a pair of Elite 65t and was curious how these newer models compared. While still pretty good earbuds, I still prefer my 65t's.
The size of the case and earbuds is really small. The case is around the size of a box of tic tacs and the earbuds themselves are, what I think, really tiny. Compared to Beats Fit Pro or some Sony earbuds, I think these are considerably smaller..or at least they feel that way. In terms of small, I thinking like these "really-easy-to-lose" small. Being so tiny and the shape of them, I had a hard time putting them in and getting them to fit right. Even after getting them seated, they still didn't feel quite right.
Included with the package are your standards eartips in different sizes, a short charging cable as well as a wireless charging dock which I thought was a neat addition. You don't normally see these included with earbuds so, again, nice touch.
In terms of sound quality, I thought they were pretty good in that they sound like a lot of other earbuds out on the market. For all-around use, they're pretty much on par with others I've tested. Highs and mids are pretty solid however very little/no bass. Now, considering these are more, all-around use as opposed to strictly music, I can understand this. You don't necessarily need to here your co-workers voice booming through the earbuds. Personally, for music headphones, I like ones with a little more bass to them.
Active noise cancellation (ANC) works well on these. There is also a pass-through mode where you can hear your music as well as surrounding noises. I thought it let a little too much background noise in however this is a personal preference. I may be wrong on this one but I was hoping a little less background noise coming in would've been better.
With the case, you should get a little more than a days worth of use out of these which is good. The small size makes it super easy to put in your purse/pack or even your pocket. With these updates I still feel a little more bias to my 65t's despite them being a couple years old. They fit well, sounded good and just felt better IMO. These earbuds though are good in their own right. For the price, these should be well suited for any music/conference call needs you have.

Discrete, high quality cameras
on September 21, 2022
Posted by: LouRevue
I have quite a few indoor/outdoor cameras in my place and these seem to be up there in terms of quality and build. Like some people, I have quite a few smart home items from different brands so that causes me to have multiple home apps on my phone. I have a Wyze door lock so these cameras seem like a good fit and potential replacement for some of my older cameras.
Design wise, there pretty small. It's about a 1 1/2 wide cube so no weird or odd shaped cameras like other manufacturers have. Lightweight and comes with all you need to get setup. Included with the package is the wall charger, mounting screws and USB cable. You can set these up pretty much anywhere and still have them somewhat discrete as they're not too big or bulky sized. These are rated for outdoor use however I am currently using them inside.
Setup was fairly quick with the Wyze app. Took about 5 minutes or so to pair up and then another 4-5 minutes to update the firmware on the cameras. Video is pretty clear and the night vision is a great touch too. For outdoor use, the color night vision should be really helpful in the event something/someone approaches the camera. There is a free 2 week trial of Wyze's camera service. However, if you don't feel like adding another subscription, there is a micro Sd slot where you can save videos locally.
Pretty snazzy little cameras. I'm still deciding on where these two will get setup in my place. Only "negative" I can think of is that the cable is a bit too short for my needs. I'll probably have to get a longer, right angle USB cable for this.

Comfortable, easy to use mouse
on September 20, 2022
Posted by: LouRevue
This is a great little mouse for those with wrist issues or those just wanting something different.
I've used a couple different vertical mice before and got to liking them. If you're accustomed to using the standard mouse, these will take a little bit getting used to. However, once you do, these are really comfortable to use and do help out with any wrist issues you may have.
The mouse feels small despite its how it looks. If you have larger hands, this might take a little more getting used to. I have large sized hands so this one is a bit small for me however I can still use it pretty well. There are your standard forward/back thumb buttons as well as standard mouse buttons. Connection is via bluetooth so it will work with PC/MAC without issues. For my work Mac, I was able to pair this mouse within seconds which was really nice. There is no dongle included so Bluetooth is the connection method.
What's nice is that this mouse can connect to 3 different devices, i.e. PC, desktop, iPad, etc., and you can switch between them all with this single mouse. As far as use, I'd recommend using a mouse pad with this or something with a smooth surface. I have a folding desk I'm using as my work-from-home desk and it's not optimal both from feel and functionality.
This is battery operated and not rechargeable so that may be a pro/con for some people. Personally, I like the battery operated models for my work laptops. Battery is supposed to last a year or so on normal use. Having owned several other Logitech mice, I think this is pretty accurate.
Overall, really comfortable mouse that's quite ergonomic and easy to use/pair. As previously mentioned, this may take some time getting used to since the ergonomics are a bit different but, once you do, I think it'll be a much more comfortable mouse to use than your typical ones.

Having had the chance to use this laptop, I must say it’s quite an impressive model for almostn any use. With an abundance of features housed in a sleek, stylish body, it’s a solid laptop for anyone in the market for a new/replacement laptop.
Using a 7th gen i5 dual core processor, the laptop functions on par with just about any laptop in its price range. With 8GB of RAM (12GB max) and a 1TB hard drive, it offers plenty of speed and room for all your files and enough power/speed to perform almost any task.
As far as the aesthetics go, this is an impressive looking laptop with clean lines, brushed aluminum cover and beveled edges. It’s a very nice looking laptop no doubt and the design, overall, is quite appealing. It comes with a full size keyboard as well as backlit keys which is a nice touch. Only gripe with the keyboard are the arrow buttons as the Up/Down buttons are smaller due to keyboard layout. The power button is on the right side of the laptop which is a bit unique as well as a dedicated volume button. There are 2 USB 3.0 ports as well as 1 USB 2.0 port, HDMI, SD Card and USB-C port. There is no CD drive for anyone wondering. The laptop (closed) is only about ¾ inch tall however it’s a bit wider than most due to the full size keyboard.
Power/performance. Using a dual-core processor I was under the impression this would be relatively slow and have choppy performance when opening multiple programs. Being this is the latest gen processor from Intel, this is not the case. Opening 2-3 programs at once was done with relative ease and switching between them was pretty flawless. The 8GB RAM comes in quite handy here and even with a 5400 RPM HDD, this laptop was able to perform tasks with very good speed. Battery life is pretty good. Using it “normally” and leaving it on for about 5-6 hours, there was about 50% battery left. Also, one very noteworthy benefit to this laptop, it doesn’t get that hot when left on for long periods of time which is VERY nice.
The display is probably the most impressive feature on here. A full 1080p display is quite vibrant and displays bright and dark colors extremely well. Those wanting to watch Netflix/Hulu will have no issues with the display. In addition to visuals, the sound from this laptop is equally impressive. For watching movies or just playing music, the speakers on this laptop deliver quite nicely without too much reverberation or distorted sound.
One of my initial thoughts of this being a 2-in-1 was that the tablet was an afterthought/gimmick. Having used previous 2-in-1 laptops, I was expecting the tablet functionality to be quite lackluster. Again, this was not the case. In this unit, you have, both, a well built laptop as well as tablet on-the-go device. Once in tablet mode, the screen orients itself to that of a normal tablet using Windows Tiles. Touch sensitivity is surprisingly smooth and using paint programs worked well without any lag or drops in sensitivity. Using the tablet form works really well when you want to sit back and watch videos or movies. Very nice.
A couple concerns with this laptop were;
The hard drive. While it’s a large 1TB drive, I would’ve expected something, at least, in the 7200 RPM range. Being fast enough for normal business related tasks, anyone wanting to use this laptop for video editing or other processor intensive jobs might find it to be a bit slow. This can easily be remedied by replacing the HD for a faster spindle drive or a SSD. However it would’ve been nice to have a tad faster hard drive here.
The keyboard, for me, took a bit getting used to since I have previously used standard laptop keyboards without the number pad. This is a personal preference so nothing against the design. Just noting that those of you used to that type of laptop keyboard, there will be a bit of learning curve involved however I think the addition of the number pad is great thing and should be standard on all laptops.
While the brushed aluminum case is aesthetically appealing, I’m a little concerned about it getting scratched/dinged from normal use or if when you’re changing it to be used as a tablet. This is the case with some laptops that use this metal casing so just something to be aware of.
Overall, this is an impressive laptop, reasonably priced with enough up-to-date technology that will last you for several years to come. Being that it’s a 2-in-1, it’s an added bonus which allows you to use this device in ways you should be able to do and with relative ease. There is some bloatware included (this should be no surprise) so make sure to uninstall/delete the stuff you don’t need. Aside from a somewhat slow hard drive, the other features on this laptop more than make up for it. Very nice buy for a new work laptop or student.

Bloatware?

It took a bit of time to setup my laptop as well. Have you tried uninstalling the bloatware on this laptop? I did and I don't have any issues with boot speed or anything else on my laptop.

Can an owner of the original non active 65t comment on the fit and stability difference with the active version? Curious if that and the extra IP rating is worth a look, or negligible.

I own both the active and regular 65T's and I don't see any noticeable difference between them. Aside from the IP rating, there's really not much difference. Both fit exactly the same and fit pretty snugly in the ear.

Brighten your day and night with this Philips Being Hue ceiling light. The dimming function lets you set an ambience for different moods, and it works with the Philips Hue dimmer switch and mobile app for versatile control. The ZigBee technology of this 32W Philips Being Hue ceiling lamp provides smooth, efficient interoperability with multiple Hue lighting units.

Can this light be controlled by a existing wired wall switch? I plan to replace the light that is already there with this one, but I would prefer to use the wired switch.

Yes you can...that's what I did. One thing to note is that the light won't come on immediately like your current light fixture does. There's a second or two delay after you flip the switch. I'm planning on replacing the switch with a dimmer switch so maybe that will correct the delay.

What is the return policy if I dont like the phone?

Depends on the carrier. I know AT&T has a 14 day return policy. Ask your carrier rep to see how long their return period is.

can i use the samsung note 2 in africa right after buying.

Only if you have the international unlocked version (the N7100 model) All other models will be tied to a carrier. You can still use those phones in Africa however you'll get hammered with roaming charges.

Does Samsung upgrade its android smartphone OS as soon as a new one is released? (4.1 Jelly Bean to the soon to be released 5.0 Key Lime Pie).

No. Samsung has its own UI built in (TouchWiz) so whenever a new OS comes out, Samsung won't release the update until they've adjusted their TouchWiz to work with the new OS. Judging from previous releases, new updates are generally released 4-6 months after a new OS has been released.
