The ROCCAT® Vulcan series of gaming keyboards have won an array of awards on the back of their design innovation and functional aesthetics. The ROCCAT® Vulcan 121 AIMO Mechanical RGB Gaming Keyboard is a full-size keyboard variant and features the renowned Linear Titan Switch Mechanical. A marvel of German engineering, this switch delivers the industry’s best in speed and responsiveness. It adds to a comprehensive feature set that gamers know and love about the Vulcan keyboard series. The low-profile design is engineered for comfort and to reduce typing fatigue, impressive durability and build quality thanks to its reinforcing black anodized aluminum top plate, and switch housings designed to resist the dust build-up that typically affects mechanical keyboards. Dedicated mixer-style audio controls, a detachable palm rest and per-key AIMO RGB lighting, round out a gaming powerhouse.

Good but not a standout.

It’s been a while since I reviewed a keyboard and it really is the same old same old. I am not a huge PC gamer, I tend to use gaming keyboards in a more utilitarian application more than anything else. The ROCCAT - Vulcan 121 was used over a week in a work application and some light gaming. First thing to get past is the marketing nonsense, the shiny apple of a RGB backlight is only important if you are a 13 year old. I’m not trying to insult anyone reading, but ask yourself – do you really care about how pretty a keyboard is ? Or if you are , how long do you think that will last?
Here is what I think is important :
Fit and finish –
The Roccat - Vulcan 121 appears nice. I say appears it the keyboard tries to give it a better impression than what it may be. The top is aluminum, it has high grade , premium appearance. However, what it is screwed into is another matter- standard plastic that is nothing special. Plastic does not mean it is bad, I just think for the price the whole thing could have been aluminum. There is no flex whatsoever so it is still solid. The weight is about 2.5 lbs so it does stay in place when gaming ( I find weight important for gaming keyboards.)
Keys –
Like any higher end gaming keyboard, the keys are super responsive. Roccat dubs their set up as “ Titan Switch Linear – the industry’s best mix of speed and responsiveness.” Of course, that is all marketing nonsense. What I found is while it is very responsive, I would have preferred a more tactile resistance of the key stroke. I guess the best way to articulate is the keys do not offer any type of push back as you are typing. You can feel the difference compared to the Logitech 915 or even the Razor. This is a matter of preference; it has no impact on quality. What I do not like is the physical size of the keys and the spacing. Roccat uses a longer key than it is wide. I found myself mis-hitting keys quite often, something I did not find on some competing models that I have reviewed.
Features –
I’m not going to go into all the features, you can see that in the description and other reviews. It is the same of nearly all the other gaming keyboards. I will say I do like that you can store macros and profiles on the device itself. Not unique to the Roccat but definitely nice.
In the end, peripherals should be looked at in two main areas – form and function. The RGB lights and multitude of configuration options are window dressing. Is this a nice keyboard? Absolutely. Does it stand out from the rest of pack – absolutely not. It’s price point is a few bucks less than Steel Series equivalent and nearly $90 less than the Logitech G915 ( the bar in which all other keyboards should be compared to.) . Personally, it is not a good fit for me. The keys are awkward and too easy to push. Other reviewers love the keys, but I just made too many mistakes. Bottom line is the Roccat Vulcan is a fine keyboard but you really have to try out a gaming keyboard to see what feels the best.

Good value, feature rich,

First thing with a $70 pair of earbuds ( or really any earbuds) is to set the proper expectations. Are they going to sound as good as an over the ear headset or earbuds that are 4 times the price? No, they are not. But with the JLabs Buds Air ANC True Wireless Earbuds, you are going to get a pair decent sounding earbuds at an affordable price but at the cost of some of the refinements of higher end earbuds. In review:
Pros
Included charging carry case.
Equalizer with multiple modes. I like the Signature mode the best.
Decent sound. Richer than it’s predecessor.
Only $70.
Battery life is long.
Cons
A bit large for my liking.
Fall out with too much movement.
Control a bit awkward.
Indifferent
Auto noise cancellation is just not as good as other brands I have tried. But it is hard to tell because of the nature of earbuds. I have the Sport Version of these earbuds and it just sounds better to me because I think it offers a better fit.
Overall, the JLabs Buds Air ANC True Wireless Earbuds do what they are supposed to. I am not sold on how well the ANC works and think the sound is only marginal improvement of its predecessors the JBuds Air True Wireless Earbuds ( sans the ANC.) While I applaud the $70 price tag, I do not see enough improvement to justify a 40% increase in price. Nonetheless, I would still recommend the earbuds since the overall value is still very good for the package you get.

When writing this review, I tried to remember that the Bella Pro Series 4.2-qt. Analog Air Fryer is really a $30 (on sale) appliance. However, this air fryer is just a terrible , cheap appliance. I don’t know how other people are giving it 5 stars. First, as with all air fryers - this does not fry anything. The term “air fryer” is a marketing term. The truth is air fryers are convection toaster ovens with a close heating element a fan to circulate air around the piece of food. The food container is designed to try to maximize air flow. This is exactly what I said when I reviewed the Bella Pro Series 6qt Digital Air Fryer. However, Bella Pro Series 4.2-qt. Analog Air Fryer is much worse than the larger digital version. The 4.2 qt is just too small. If you try to fill cooking container, it interferes with the with the air flow . Even small amounts of food do not cook well on the bottom and require that you pay special attention to flipping the food. I question how much “air frying” is actually going on as opposed to having food close to a concentrated heat source. It does crisp foods up but not at the level nor consistency you would expect. The controls are basic but functional – one knob for time and one for temperature. There is something to be said for basic controls, less to go wrong. In terms of quality, the Bella Pro Series 4.2-qt. Analog Air Fryer is marginal at best. The fit and finish are just cheap- unfinished screws in the container, thin plastic, questionable no stick food container – all subpar quality and even less than I would think of for a $30 air fryer. Even worse, the unit was absolutely filthy in the interior out of the box so make sure you clean it thoroughly when you first get it.
There is not a lot to like about this air fryer other than it is inexpensive. The Bella Pro Series 4.2-qt. Analog Air Fryer is just too small, too cheaply made and has too little features to recommend. You would be far better served by getting a larger more expensive air fryer. Does it work? Sure, but the performance is at the bottom of the spectrum and I would not use this on anything but the smallest and basic of foods. 2 stars and only because it works somewhat and is only $30 on sale.

It has been years since I used a speakerphone for PC based IP calls. I really did not see the need but started to notice the last few months that the mic and speakers were just not cutting on my work Surface Pro. Like so many people out there, I’ve been forced to work from home and live on Zoom, Fuze and Microsoft Teams for communication. I can honestly say that the Anker Power Conference Bluetooth Speakerphone made the world of difference. I have had zero people telling me they cannot understand what I am saying and everyone I asked stated my calls were perfectly clear. One of the issues I’ve had with my Surface Pro for calls is the microphone would pick up too much background sound when my air conditioner turned on. Not anymore, the noise cancellation and multiple microphone design that isolates the speaker that Anker has in this speakerphone is perfect. In review:
- The audio pickup is simply fantastic. It is just great, no other way to put it.
- Speech is clear and easy to understand
- Top notch quality and compact design with a carry case. It feels like it is a combination of high quality
plastic and aluminum.
- Bluetooth or USB connection. I used both but ended up using the USB . The speakerphone was up and
running in under a minute.
- Built in power bank to charge USB devices.
- Powerful speaker for it’s size. The speakerphone highest volume setting was actually too loud for me
(but the sound remained clear.)
- Easy to use touch controls.
The Anker Power Conference Bluetooth Speakerphone hits every mark.
The price is right.
The design is right.
The features are right.
5 stars.

Great quality, even greater value.

I’ve owned and reviewed many wireless headsets. In fact, I own the previous model of the Epic Air Sport ANC wireless earbuds. JLab makes great products at an affordable price, the Epic Air Sport ANC continues this tradition.
Set up and app–
Pairs easy as anything else Bluetooth these days. You should download the app first because the earbuds require an immediate firmware update. The app let’s you customize the controls, adjust the equalizer , update the earbuds and control the auto noise cancellation.
Fit –
I found the earbuds very comfortable and extremely secure. No matter how I moved around, they held fast. I like the around ear design that the JLab Epic Air Sport, it is far superior to Apple Airpods.
Sound –
For earbuds, I found the sound to be very good. Of course, they are not as good as over the ear head phones but the sound is rich, clear across lows , mids and highs. The auto noise cancellation seems to work but it is hard tell to what level. I did make a phone call while outside and the sound bi-directionally was clear.
Quality and features –
Wireless charging , long battery life, water and dust resistant, charging case, touch controls. Google Assistant activation – the list goes on . I’m not going to go over the nitty gritty features, you can see that in the Bestbuy description. Rest assured, it has all the features you will ever use.
So is it worth it? Every penny, The Epic Air Sport ANC wireless earbuds are only $100. That is a lot of features and quality for something that is $150 less than Apple Airpods. I recommend completely, what a great value. This one is tough to beat.

Cheap. Misleading advertising of power.

from Farmingdale, NY
My expectations were not high when I received the Oster Pro 1200 Plus Blend-N-Go® Smoothie Cup, it is a $70 blender and I have one that is far more expensive. I kept I mind that it is not a fair comparison, but this is just not a great blender. The Oster Pro 1200 is not as loud as expected but still much louder than the more expensive blenders. Sound can vary quite a bit according to what you are blending so I compared it with nothing in it to the more expensive unit. Does it work? Sure, it blends fine for a basic blender but the power is relatively low. It did bog down on a heavier load but kept most of its speed. One exception is the medium power did not seem to maintain an even speed all the time. It has an appearance of brushed metal but it is really, really cheap plastic. It has the usual options on the keypad and they work okay. However, the keys are weak and flimsy and whole keypad flexes back and forth when you press a key. I do not see how it can hold up. The container is all glass and I had no problems with the lid staying on (some online reviews state this is a problem.) Oster includes a smoothie cup for those who find that important ( I do not.) Surprisingly, Oster includes a 3 year satisfaction guarantee although I see some reviews of Oster not honoring cracking of the container. I cannot speak to the validity of that but it is in the reviews on the Oster web page.
So would I recommend it? Absolutely not. I can forgive some of the inadequacies because of the low price. What is unforgiveable is the manufacturer blatantly misleads you of the power. A lot of blender manufacturers do it in one way or another but it is just dishonest. On all 4 sides and the top of the box, it is emblazoned with 1200 watts of power. That is not true. The unit clearly shows that at its max power, it draws 7.5 amps. At 120 volts, the wattage 900 watts ( amps X voltage will give you watts.) And that is the max draw – that means on start up to get the motor going. I would guess it probably drawing 5 to 6 amps running or 600 to 720 watts. Shop vac manufacturers have been doing the same thing for years and many of the blender companies do the same thing. It is misleading and dishonest. Now Oster may respond with a bunch of fuzzy math but it comes down to science – you cannot product more power than you are taking in.
Pass on the Oster Pro 1200, there are plenty in this price range and some that much better for a little more money. Try to find a company that is a bit more transparent of the power and concentrate on the true features, functions and benefits.

Quiet, fast and the coffee tastes great.
on September 20, 2020

from Farmingdale, NY
I’ve owned several Keurig’s over the years and even a Bunn single serve. To be honest, I never was impressed with some of the older Keurig coffee makers. I found that in order to a good quality Keurig unit, I would have to get one of the larger units. The larger units were not manageable with limited counter space. That is not the case here, the K-Supreme Plus™ Single Serve Coffee Maker has a relatively small foot print yet is definitely high quality in both its construction and coffee taste ( although you will have to test what the best strength setting is. ) Setting it up is a breeze, there is not much to do but to run the “cleansing brew” cycle. This is not something to skip, I definitely could detect some very slight plastic/chemical smell in the water of the cleansing brew.
So the all important question, how is the coffee? Well, the first thing to consider about the coffee taste is all the available setting. You can adjust cup size, brew strength and temperature. First thing I found it the brew strength radically affects taste. I started off with the strongest setting and 8 oz. Uggh, rough. Now that is not a slight to the machine; it is my personal taste. I tried a medium setting and it was night and day. There is also temperature setting but I am not so sure why you would have anything less than the highest setting. Coffee just comes out better with the hottest water. In the end , I’ve used it 7 times since I received the unit and the coffee was great every time ( except for that first time of the highest setting.)
In conclusion, I like the K-Supreme Plus. Is it as good as the top line coffee multi cup machines? No, there are differences in how they brew. But for a singe serve machine, I think this is very good and you will not be disappointed. One thing that I felt was stand out is how fast it brews and how quiet it is. I used to hate how loud the older machines were and this is whisper quiet in comparison.

Compact, well built and affordable.

So, it is a charger, not much to get excited about. Well, let me tell me….. you are right. It is utilitarian device designed to do a basic job. In this case, it does it well. The Belkin Boost Dual USB-A 24W Car Charger is well built, compact and does what it says. I had a standard 5-watt charger in my car, it took forever to charge my Pixel XL2 and was nearly useless for my Ipad Pro. It is night and day for my Pixel, charging nearly as fast as my wall charger. The Ipad Pro charged about the same time as the wall charger (using the included lightning cable.) Overall, it did the job, it is very compact and is well built. The price is right on the mark and I am sure you will see it on sales for an even more affordable deal. If you need a bit more power, there is a 30-watt version of the charger and that might be better suited to higher demand devices. Either way, you cannot go wrong with Belkin products.

Another great LG product
on August 24, 2020
Posted by: TechnicallyCorrect
from Farmingdale, NY
Let’s face it, Apple is the innovator in nearly all things mobile related over the past decade or so. When innovation comes, so come the imitators. And that is what exactly what LG does with the TONE Free HBS-FN6 earbuds. However, LG does a decent good job at it and gives Apple a run for their money in a few areas. In review:
Setup –
I literally opened the case and took the earbuds out and my phone has a request to pair. It paired immediately, associated with my Google account and prompted me download the app. After the download, the app updated itself. This entire process took 2 to 3 minutes. Very thorough and easy, far better than Sony and some of the other brands I have tested.
App -
Simple and easy to use settings You can control different modes for the sound modes, noise cancellation, volume, see battery levels and more.
Physical controls –
The HBS-FN6 has multi-touch controls that do take getting some used to.
Sound and performance –
I read some mixed reviews on the sound, but I personally found the sound to be excellent once I selected the “immersive “sound setting. You can adjust between treble, bass, immersive and natural. Each have their merits but do expect heavy bass, they are earbuds after all
Fit, finish and unique feature –
The Tone Free HBS-FN6 are well built but lightweight and well balanced. They come in a compact charging case that can charge wirelessly ( I did not get to test that.) The earbuds snap into place magnetically for a tight fit. And now for the shameless, nonsense marketing gimmick. The Tone Free are touted to be self-cleaning buds, thanks to a “UVnano charging case” that “kills 99.9% of bacteria. Utter nonsense. First of all, why? Are your ears infested with teeming bacteria that grow exponentially and infect you? Of course not. Does the “UV” clean dirt and debris? No. So what does really do for you? Nothing. Even if you wanted to share your earbuds, you still would wipe them down, right? This is nothing more than a gimmick designed to draw in people in this pandemic germophobe environment.
Battery life –
Average battery life is about 6 hours not including the 2 charging cycles in the case. This is slightly below some of the competition but I did not really find any issues.
In summary, the TONE Free HBS-FN6 fit well , sound great and easy to set up. There is a lot of competition that does some things better at a bit higher price but overall the LG is well rounded package at good price.

A smart sensor but a not so smart monthly fee
on July 28, 2020
Posted by: TechnicallyCorrect
from Farmingdale, NY
This review is written based on the Ecobee SmartSensors for doors and windows being used with the Ecobee Smart Camera and the Ecobee SmartSensors ( used with the thermostat) and the Haven monitoring service. You have to look at the Ecobee products as an entire ecosystem rather just the individual components. Also, these sensors only work Ecobee products. For a full understanding, please see my review of the Ecobee camera.
First thing to be aware of, the Ecobee SmartSensors for doors and windows are entry and motion sensors – do not confuse them with the Ecobee Smartsensor for thermal sensing. Note to Ecobee – why would you name the two different products with essentially the same name ? It’s confusing to the consumer. The Ecobee SmartSensors for doors and windows are a two fold device that senses both motion and when someone opens a door and window. There is two parts to it, the sensor main body and a magnet . Both mount next to each other on a door or window. If the door or window opens, the magnetic field is broken and the sensor sends an alert. The motion sensor works like any other motion sensor on the market. Setup is simple and straight forward, just like any of the other Ecobee products I hae reviewed. In this case, you pull a tab on the device that lets the battery connect, scan a QR code in to the app and adhere the sensor to a door or window. I have to say Ecobee really has the set up down on all their products , it is easy and fast . The sensors do what they are supposed to do , for the most part. Opening a door and the sensor goes off with little latency. Motion sensing seemed to be a bit more hit and miss, make sure to adjust your sensitivity if they do not seem to react as expected.
There are issues with both the Ecobee sensors and Ecobee ecosystem. First, these sensors are $80 for two sensors. That is more expensive than a lot of the competition. Yes, you get the advantage of that it senses motion and entry but what is point of having a motion sensor on an entry sensor is it is on a door that will go odd anyway or a window that will have a curtain covering the sensor. When you compare it to the Google Nest sensor ( $100 for two ), the competitor puts a lot more into their sensor – motion ( Ecobee has this,) light, accelerometer, magnetometer ( Ecobee has this,) temperature, humidity and tamper detection. The big issue with Ecobee is you have to pay for the Ecobee Haven home monitoring service. Think about this, you just spent $280+ for Ecobee camera, two SmartSensors and two SmartSensors for and you cannot monitor your home ( or record video) without paying an additional monthly fee. If you do not pay, you do not get any of the features you really bought the sensors and the system for. I understand that Ecobee is trying to monetize their ecosystem but they are facing competition that has a developed, mature ecosystem that , in nearly all cases, offers many of the features of their system for free. Based on that , I cannot recommend this product . It is a shame because all the Ecobee products seem to be well built and they make the best thermostats I have ever seen. Sadly, I am going to cancel my service after a month is up ( 1st month is free) and box up the components. Why am going to pay for something when I have Samsung Smarthings and Arlo that do it for free?

can I watch tv and see the person I am talking too on the tv?

Maybe, but it is not a function that is built into the device. You have to connect this to a dedicated HDMI port. Theoretically, if your TV had picture in picture ; you could display two video sources.

Would this be a good choice for getting my hurricane shutters up in the event of a power outage?

In most cases, I would not recommend this product for that application. There are far too many variables in terms of power consumption and compatibility with whatever type of hurricane shutters you may have. I would recommend talking to a professional installer to get options.
