A good TV with only one sweet spot
on August 2, 2019

KEY FEATURES
Quantum Dot 4k LED Display
Compatible with Dolby Vision, HDR, and HLG Content
Up to 2700 nits brightness
Full backlit display with 480 local dimming zones
Airplay 2 and Chromecast compatible
Google and Alexa voice control compatible
This isn’t an all-encompassing list, just some of the highlights.
SET-UP
This is one of those products whose packaging is impressive and very well thought out. There was no wrestling to get it out of the box. Inside the box, the TV comes in a large plastic bag with 2 grab handles built in. I will admit that I was very hesitant lifting a TV that heavy by the grab handles in a plastic bag, but it worked without any drama. While the plastic seemed to stretch an uncomfortable amount, it didn’t fail. A huge plus is that the screen comes with a padded cardboard cover affixed to it and really protected it from damage. I was able to lay the TV down without worry of damage to the screen.
Initial set-up was very quick and completely pain free. Upon power up, the TV walks you through all the steps necessary for setting it up and getting it working. It took me approximately 5 minutes after plugging it in to watching content. That included downloading and installing a firmware update.
PERFORMANCE
This TV is a very strong performer and gives the big names a run for their money. Out of the box color and picture were not all that great. But, lowering the sharpness below 10 and using the Calibrated picture mode really cleaned things up. In my opinion, close enough to reference that most people could use these settings and be perfectly happy. However, if you are a perfectionist, Vizio includes a wide range of adjustments that allow you to get the color fine tuned to near reference levels. Vizio’s panel and color tracking were very accurate. I am in no way a professional, but I do appreciate a well calibrated, accurate display and own a colorimeter to calibrate my TV’s. As you can see from the photos, I was able to get the error rates of all grayscale measurements down to imperceptible levels. Outstanding! This is the only TV, other than my LG OLED, that I have been able to achieve a picture this accurate.
Audio performance was also a welcome change. I use this TV with the included chrome, metal stands. You can actually hear and understand this TV without a soundbar. While I really disliked the Surround processing (it seemed to make the scenes way too loud), turning the surround off cleared up the dialog.
NEGATIVES
The major drawback I have with this TV is the poor viewing angle. If you really want to enjoy that perfectly calibrated picture in all its glory, the only way to experience it is right in front of the set. If you sit just slightly off axis, the picture quality rapidly deteriorates. I have included a picture with a dark screen to show the effect. If this set is for one person or a couple that sits right next to each other, great. If not, you most likely will not enjoy the experience in any other seating position other than straight ahead.
The second drawback is the lack of Dolby Atmos support. While this isn’t a total loss, at this price point, I feel the TV should be able decode Dolby Atmos encoded soundtracks. Other manufacturer’s TVs will decode Atmos soundtracks, but Vizio seems to reserve this exclusively for their soundbars.
My third issue is the performance of the Wi-Fi. 5GHz performance on this TV is very poor. This TV is only about 30ft away from my router and I am only able to get about 4Mb/s down, at best. Switching to 2.4GHz improves things substantially, raising throughput to 35Mb/s. This is not a function of 2.4 having better coverage than 5. I placed my laptop next to the TV and downloaded a file on the 5GHz band. My laptop was averaging 30MB/s. That is not a typo. I then used the Netflix tool to test speeds. Netflix speed tests also confirmed the speed discrepancy, averaging 80+Mb/s for the laptop and about 3Mb/s for the TV. That is a substantial difference in 5GHz performance. Using the ethernet connection is highly recommended and would eliminate these potential issues.
CONCLUSION
Do I like this TV? Yes, if I am sitting directly in front of it. The picture can be outstanding. The quantum dot technology makes the picture very bright and vivid. Colors really pop and whites can be so bright, they are almost uncomfortable. Out of the box calibrated modes are close to spot on and any discrepancies in the color accuracy can be easily fine tuned with the well designed Vizio software and a good colorimeter. The audio is equally impressive. This is one of the few flat panels I’ve had that can be heard and understood. The Vizio software is decent and easy to learn. The Smart TV functions are easily accessed with little to no lag. However, that viewing angle is VERY poor. You really need to sit directly in front of the TV to get the best experience. If you sit anywhere slightly off center, the image deteriorates rapidly.
So, it all boils down to one question: Would I purchase this TV or a slightly smaller, similarly priced OLED TV? Unfortunately, I would say: OLED. If you are interested in a super bright, vivid image, shear viewing size and sit directly in front of this TV, you will be extremely happy with this television. It is very nice and has a ton to offer. But, if you truly want the ultimate in black level performance, the best viewing angles, and the most accurate image reproduction, OLED is superior. However, should Vizio be able to improve the off-center viewing performance of this TV, then that could be another story entirely …

This is a high quality, very accurate mouse.

Posted by: NAMO
SET-UP
Set-up was very simple. After plugging in the small USB receiver, Windows takes control and installs drivers for basic functionality. Initially, I was very disappointed with the performance of the mouse. The default Windows drivers and mouse options offered very inferior performance compared to my go-to Logitech MX1100. Finding a quick and simple place to download the Logitech software from the website proved very frustrating. However, once I went back to the directions (who would have thought to read those??), I found the proper URL for the necessary GHUB software. After installation, things were immediately different and the mouse had a whole new personality. The GHUB software is mandatory to get the most and best experiences from the mouse. It allows you to fully customize the interactions from lighting to resolution, assigned buttons, macros, report rates etc.
USE
Once the GHUB software was configured to my tastes, this mouse has been very enjoyable to use. The mouse has a premium feel. The optional 10g weight was much needed and a welcome addition. Button clicks are smooth with just the right feel and resistance. The scroll wheel has the perfect amount of resistance and is smooth and consistent. It is obvious that Logitech spent a great deal of time and effort in the design, ergonomics, and functionality.
The mouse is nearly infinitely customizable. The buttons, scroll wheel, lighting effects, resolution, report rate can all be changed and tailored to support your needs and wants. The GHUB software makes programming the different options simple and straightforward. While I don’t find the software instantly intuitive, it is easy to learn and offers many options for the user. I really appreciate how changes the user makes to the mouse instantly reflects in the GHUB software. For example, I had the report rate set at the default of 1000x/second. After and extended gaming session, the mouse was draining the battery fairly rapidly. I switched to 125x/second and the software immediately re-estimated my remaining battery life and current draw. Very slick.
CONS
While I am still getting used to the new size of the mouse, I do really miss the size and heft of my MX1100. I have been using that mouse for years and am really accustomed to the weight and feel and am sure it will be the same with the mouse as I continue to use it.
The GHUB software is good, but it is a weird experience too. The software has to load in order to get the mouse configured correctly. Until it fully loads into memory, the mouse uses the basic Windows drivers and is not very responsive or user friendly. Granted this is only for the first few seconds after Windows boots, but the switch from the basic Windows drivers to the GHUB software is abrupt and I constantly lose the mouse pointer. If I had more patience, this wouldn’t be an issue, but I don’t have a great deal of patience. The same scenario occurs when the mouse goes to sleep too. It conveniently dims the lights after 1 minute of inactivity and goes to sleep after 5 minutes. Upon wake up, there is an awkward transition from Windows drivers to GHUB. To be fair, this can be reduced or eliminated by changing the sleep times in the GHUB software. But, this would also affect battery life.
FINAL THOUGHTS
I really like this product. Even with my impatience regarding the software, it doesn’t diminish my opinion of the product. The mouse has an excellent, premium feel. In addition to the wireless features, it includes a charging/direct wire cable, should it be needed. Dimming the lighting to 80% and slowing the report rate to 125x/second gives me about 50 hours of battery life per charge. Having the option of using the included hardwired cable or the optional wireless charging pad are great features. I have found this mouse not only works great for gaming, but is also super precise and a great fit for photo editing. It is far more accurate than my MX1100. Highly recommended.

Good Dashcam with Tons of Features
on June 27, 2019
Posted by: NAMO
FEATURES
1080p recording at 60fps
Emergency SOS feature
GPS
Ability to connect to your insurance provider or loved one.
Ability to add a rear-view camera.
Amazon Alexa support
This is not a full feature list, just highlights.
SET-UP
The camera can be configured via the MyNextbase Connect app that is available in the iOS or Google Play store or by its 2.5” touchscreen. Either option allows you to adjust the many parameters of the camera: resolution, GPS functionality, speed tracking, audio recording, SOS notifications, etc. Initial set-up went fairly smooth, even though there were some bugs. I used an Android phone to configure the camera and had very little difficulty. Once installed, the app immediately recognized the camera, established a connection, and downloaded the latest firmware. Though I got errors saying my phone couldn’t establish a wi-fi connection to the camera, everything went without issue. After a successful firmware update, I never received any additional errors.
USE
The dashcam has performed without issue and appears to be very rugged. It has never failed to work even in the 100+ degree heat. Video recording is very clear, even if restricted to only 1080p resolution. The ability to record video at 60 frames per second goes a long way in video clarity, especially when driving at highway speeds. The camera has a 140-degree field of view and has no problem seeing three lanes of traffic starting about halfway down the hood of my car. License plates and street signs are legible. The lens has a polarizing filter to help cut down on glare when facing toward the sun or other bright objects.
Camera videos can be viewed in 1 of 3 ways: the MyNextbase player app for the desktop, the 2.5" touchscreen on the device, or by the MyNextbase Connect app on your phone or tablet. When viewing on your phone or tablet, the dashcam establishes a Bluetooth connection for low resolution video playback, but can also link to your phone or tablet via a wi-fi connection for high resolution video download or playback. I must add that the switch between Bluetooth and wi-fi has proven seamless since the dashcam’s firmware update. The software automatically saves clips at a user-selectable 1, 2, or 3-minute interval. Each 1 minute, 1080p, 60fps video clip occupies approximately 125MB of space. Choose your microSD card (not included) wisely, if you want to retain videos for longer periods before having them overwritten.
The camera can be configured to call emergency services in the event of a detected accident. The camera gives you a warning on your phone and if you fail to reply to the warning on the phone’s screen, the camera will initiate a call to first responders with your name, location, and any medical conditions, should you program the information in. Thankfully, I have not had to test this feature.
The MyNextbase Cloud website is a cool feature. This is a secure site where you can upload any dashcam videos you would like saved. It is a free service and Nextbase will save your files for 30 days. Once you have uploaded the video, Nextbase emails a secure link to that video. This link can then be shared with whomever you deem necessary: insurance, authorities, etc. Again, thankfully I have not had the need to test this feature either, but can definitely see the benefit and give major credit to Nextbase for offering it as a free service.
The GPS is very accurate. Playing back videos recorded on the dashcam splits the screen on your phone or tablet. On the top is the footage from the camera and on the bottom is the GPS information: speed, direction, coordinates, etc. It is a really cool system and the GPS information is in sync with the video playback, even showing your position on a map overlay. Playback is smooth and has never stuttered or been choppy.
NEGATIVES
Nextbase app. The app is buggy. It gave me errors during the initial set-up process. Though, the app worked through any errors, it was not a smooth, issue-free experience. The app freezes during video playback. After viewing several videos on my Android phone, the app will fail to connect back to the dashcam and retrieve any additional information or videos. A reboot of the app and camera re-establishes the connection.
Alexa. While this appears to be a good idea, it falls flat in practice. The dashcam can be linked to your Alexa app installed on your Android or iOS phone. Once linked, the mic on the dashcam can be used to access Alexa and make requests from her. This is better in theory than in practice, as the mic on the dashcam does not record audio all that cleanly or consistently. To be fair to Nextbase, this may be able to be improved with repositioning the dashcam, but at just off center of the top of the windshield, every sound is muffled.
CONCLUSION
I really like this camera. The 2.5” touchscreen is easy to use and very responsive. Both the app and the direct menu of the dashcam are intuitive and easy to learn and navigate. The dashcam has a ton of features and safety systems built-in. I even appreciate the sleep mode where the camera will record video if it detects a jarring movement while powered off. Like I said before, the camera itself has worked flawlessly, even with interior car temps well over 100+ degrees. Even though the apps are a little buggy, Nextbase appears to have put a ton of effort and thought into their products. Based on all the built-in, thoughtful features, free cloud storage, and overall ease of use, I give this product 5 stars.

A Strong Performing and Sleek 1080p Monitor
on June 26, 2019
Posted by: NAMO
KEY FEATURES
16 x 9 TN Panel with a Matte Finish
240Hz Refresh Rate
1920 x 1080 Display
1ms Response Time
Ports: Display Port, HDMI, USB
This isn’t an all-encompassing list, just some of the highlights.
AESTHETICS
This is a sleek monitor. Easily one of the best-looking desktop monitors I’ve seen in a while. The bezels on the sides and top are very thin. It gives the illusion of having no borders around the top and sides. Even the bottom bezel is nothing too thick. The monitor has an LED light on the bottom to illuminate the workspace underneath and is controlled via the HP Omen app or directly via the multi-function joystick on the back of the panel. The light can be set to display 1 of 7 different colors, or cycle through them. The brightness and speed are also adjustable. As expected, the monitor is adjustable vertically, includes a tilt feature, and has a handy headphone hook on the back.
PERFORMANCE
This monitor performed flawlessly with any desktop app or game I played. The monitor boasts refresh rates of up to 240Hz with response times as low as 1ms. Paired to my GTX 1660Ti, the nVidia Control Panel had no issues recognizing the display. The necessary drivers were automatically downloaded and installed and the G-Sync feature was enabled. G-Sync is Nvidia’s technology that allows the computer to match the monitor’s refresh rate to the video card (similar to AMD Radeon’s FreeSync, which this monitor also supports). This tech is said to prevent screen tearing and artifacting during gaming. I will say that it worked awesome in my tests. Images were razor sharp and gaming was smooth and fluid. Even static images, such as fonts, spreadsheets, photos, etc. were crisp and highly detailed.
Out of the box color performance was very good. I began my testing and calibration using the “Standard” setting on the Omen monitor. With this setting, the brightness was considerably higher than necessary and the color temperatures were a little too cool (blueish). However, after some measurements with my colorimeter and a few tweaks to the settings, I was able to get the white balance nearly spot on. I have yet to calibrate a monitor that comes this close to the D65 target white balance or has so few color errors throughout the measurement ranges. The end result are images and photos are vivid, detailed, and have true to life colors.
The monitor includes the usual selection of ports found on most monitors. These ports include: USB 3.0, Display Port (1.2), and 2 HDMI ports (2.0).
NEGATIVES
I have only 2 complaints about this monitor. One is the resolution. It is only a 1920 x 1080 monitor. I consider this resolution the bare minimum for today’s standards. Sadly, my 2012 monitors from another manufacturer have higher resolutions than this monitor that is 7 years newer. That being said, my monitors don’t support G-Sync or FreeSync and are only 60Hz.
Second, is the dynamic range. This is billed as a premium gaming monitor, but yet it still only supports Standard Dynamic Range and doesn’t support High Dynamic Range. I feel this is a glaring omission, as so many games now support Wide Color Gamuts and High Dynamic Range.
CONCLUSION
I really like the look of the monitor. The thin bezels on the top and sides really give the monitor a sleek appearance. Gaming was always smooth and images were crisp, detailed, and vibrant. I never experienced any image tearing, motion blur, or stuttering. The monitor appears built to take full advantage of the latest cards from nVidia and AMD.
However, if you don’t need a monitor specifically geared toward gaming, I think you could find better. 4k HDR displays are commonplace now and can be had for similar money. Granted these monitors probably won’t have the 240Hz refresh, G-Sync or FreeSync, but that tech is not really needed for non-gamers. A good, high quality HDR image at 60Hz will be sufficient. The HDR monitors offer substantially more detail and definition to images and colors, making them that much closer to being lifelike. However, if gaming is your thing, this is a very good monitor and offers a lot of features most other monitors don’t.

A Great Performing Desktop That Has a Temper
on June 19, 2019
Posted by: NAMO
KEY FEATURES
9th Generation Intel Core i7 Processor (8 Cores / 8 Threads). This is an octa-core processor without hyper-threading, operating at 3.0GHz, 4.7GHz in Turbo mode.
nVidia GTX 1660Ti Video Card
16GB Kingston HyperX DDR4 RAM +1 Open Expansion Slot
256GB Western Digital SSD + 1TB Western Digital 3.5” HDD
Gigabit Ethernet and 802.11ac Wireless
Ports: 6 USB 3.1 Ports (Gen 1), Headphone, Mic, and Speaker jacks (3.5mm)
Windows 10 Home 64-bit
This isn’t an all-encompassing list, just some of the highlights.
AESTHETICS
This is a good-looking desktop. It is all black with the HP Omen logo angled on the front. The left side has a clear cover, allowing an unobstructed view of the internals. Cable management within the case is tidy, but the PSU is not modular, so there are quite a few extra wires in the bottom. The components are upgradeable, and the case claims to be a tool-less design with components and dimensions that adhere to the micro-ATX form factor standard. The case has an LED strip on the inside and the HP Omen logo on the front is LED backlit. Both are controlled by the HP Omen app and can be changed from several preset colors or can be set to cycle through the colors independently of each other. Note, that these are not individually addressable LED’s, so each individual LED in the light strip can’t be programmed, it is all or none. Furthermore, you don’t have a full selection of available colors to choose from, there are only about 8 different colors. The included mouse and keyboard serve the purpose but are nothing special. The keyboard is quite compact for a desktop model but is comfortable to type on without feeling cramped. I would have loved to have a backlight option, but sadly it isn’t available on this keyboard. The mouse was even more basic. One that I would not want to spend a lot of time with. I replaced it after about 15 minutes of use. It is cheap and hard to click.
GENERAL PEFORMANCE
Bottom line: This desktop performs extremely well, and it is very quick. The 8 core processor, combined with an SSD, make for a speedy machine. The computer will boot from completely off in about 6 seconds, while most applications open in around 2 seconds. Application access, file saving, file transfers, web browsing are super quick; some of the quickest I have experienced. No applications, even photo and image editing ever seem to fully tax or utilize the system to its full potential.
GAMING PERFORMANCE
I have spent many hours and played a lot of games on this computer utilizing Microsoft’s new Game Pass Ultimate. To test the CPU and GPU, all games were played at full HD resolution (1920 x 1080) and all video settings set to their highest values. Resource monitors showed system utilization consistently at 100% for the CPU and 60% for the GPU. I had no issues with any game I installed and played. Frame rates remained consistent and game play never got choppy. I never experienced any screen tearing from the GPU failing to keep up or from the CPU bottlenecking the throughput. The nVidia 1660Ti was able to take advantage of my monitor’s G-Sync compatibility and gaming remained smooth and consistent.
NEGATIVES
Cooling. My major complaint with this machine is the cooling. There are 4 fans in the system in total: Chassis, PSU, GPU, and CPU. Normal, daily computing does not even cause the machine to break a sweat. E-mail, web browsing, watching videos, document creation, etc. aren’t even a challenge for the machine. The computer sits there quietly humming away not making itself known. Games, however, are a different story. Games cause the CPU to spike to 100% utilization, with the GPU ramping up along with it. Shortly thereafter, all the fans are running at 100%. This desktop gets loud. Those fans make a lot of noise when gaming. Most concerning is the CPU. It appears that HP has chosen to utilize a stock Intel cooler. It does not seem adequate for the job at hand. After only a minute or two, CPU temperature breaks 80o Celsius and climbs, never falling back under that threshold until after the gaming sessions. To be fair, Intel claims the maximum thermal limit for this CPU is 100C, which I never did hit, but managed to come close. Dumping all that hot air into the case only cooled by a 92mm exhaust fan heats up EVERYTHING inside. HP includes provisions for an AIO (All In One) liquid cooler and I think it is a must have option for gamers or someone using programs that tax the CPU near its full potential (i.e. video editing / transcoding).
Hard Drive. The machine comes with 1 SSD and 1 3.5-inch HDD, both manufactured by Western Digital. The SSD performs flawlessly and is super quick. The old school rotating hard drive is not as good. It is mounted at the front of the chassis, behind the front panel. I’m not sure if it is because there are no rubber isolators between the HDD caddy and the chassis or just the HDD itself, but the HDD is noisy. It sounds like a rodent is in the computer. Saving files to the drive, Windows 10 indexing, when it gets used for a swap file, it squeaks and makes all kinds of unpleasant noises not typical to normal rotating hard drives. Hard drive tests, including the SMART tests, show it is working so far, but not sure if it will last much longer.
Accessories. Like I mentioned earlier in the review, the mouse and keyboard leave a lot to be desired. I can live with the keyboard, but wish it had, at the very least, basic backlighting. The mouse was a true no-go for me. It was cheap feeling and extremely hard to click. It was not pleasant to use. Sadly, those items are a letdown and do not fit with an otherwise premium feeling system. But, rest assured HP will sell you custom Omen keyboards and mice with any and all options you could want (at an additional cost). I will fully admit, that this is just a small quibble on my part, as I know most serious users and / or gamers will already have their preferred mouse / keyboard combo.
CONCLUSION
This is a very nice computer. The 8-core processor is very powerful. The CPU works well with the installed Western Digital SSD and the Kingston HyperX RAM. Start-up times are quick and application loading is impressively fast. Normal day-to-day use proves to be no challenge for the system. However, load up some graphic intensive games, or CPU intensive programs, and things change. CPU core temps quickly ramp up and the fans become obnoxiously loud. It really detracts from an overall good system and an enjoyable experience. I know that 80C is less than the maximum limit Intel sets for the chip, but it is hotter than I like to run a processor. This is especially concerning as all that heat gets dumped inside the case with the other components before being extracted. If you are a gamer or use CPU intensive apps, I would highly recommend liquid cooling (it would really quiet the system down too). If you are not a regular gamer or don’t use a bunch of CPU intensive apps, this would be a great configuration for just about anyone.

Good Performance, Poor Battery Life

Gigabit Ethernet and 802.11ac Wireless
Ports: 1 Full Size HDMI, 3 USB Ports (2 are 3.1, 1 is 2.0), USB Type C (Gen 1), Ethernet, and a Headphone/Microphone combo jack.
Windows 10 Home 64-bit
This isn’t an all-encompassing list, just some of the highlights.
AESTHETICS
The laptop weighs in at a little less than 5 pounds, including the 4 cell battery. It is all black with some red accents on the hinge area. The keys all have red lettering with red outlines on important buttons. Overall, it is a very nice design and a good change of pace from the usual black keys with white lettering. As an added feature, the keyboard is fully back lit, of course in red also. The keys are easy and comfortable to type on and have good spacing without feeling too cramped.
GENERAL PEFORMANCE
Bottom line: I feel this laptop performs well and it is very quick. The hyper-threaded quad core processor, combined with an SSD, make a real difference. Built upon the 14nm Intel chip, you can now have a quad core processor in a laptop and still get some form of battery life. The computer will boot from completely off in about 10 seconds. Most applications open in around 2 seconds.
GAMING PERFORMANCE
I have spent many hours and played several games on this computer utilizing Microsoft’s new Game Pass Ultimate. To test the CPU and GPU, all games were played at full HD resolution (1920 x 1080) and all in-game video settings were set to their highest values. Resource monitors showed system utilization averaging approximately 60% for the CPU and 80% for the GPU. While the XBOX service may not fully tax the system to the extreme, I have experienced no issues with any game I installed and played. Frame rates remained consistent. The game play never got choppy and the screen never experienced any tearing from the GPU failing to keep up with the games. There is a sizable fan in the system to keep the computer cool during gaming sessions and you won’t miss it when it comes on. However, I don’t think the fan noise is too bad considering the job it has to do. While not anywhere near silent, it isn’t obnoxiously loud like some laptops. It is quiet enough, that if I’m not gaming, it is barely noticeable, often blending in with the ambient noise.
BATTERY LIFE
Normal laptop use has yielded an average battery run time of around 4 hours. That includes using the screen at the Windows 10 default brightness and a mixed use of apps, video playback, email, web browsing via wi-fi, etc. However, the same can’t be said for game playback. The Windows and nVidia control panel indicate that the system uses the on-chip Intel UHD Graphics for normal computing tasks. Hooking a monitor to the full-size HDMI port and/or gaming will switch over the nVidia graphics card. Playing games yielded a best battery life of 90 minutes. That included quite a bit of time where the system wasn’t being taxed with frame refreshes and most items on the screen were static. Constant, non-stop game play will drain the battery from a full charge in approximately 1 hour.
NEGATIVES
Battery life. Acer only includes a 4 cell battery. Most laptops have at least a 6 cell or greater battery for longer runtimes. I think most people, me included, feel that your laptop should be able to last approximately 8hrs on a charge for basic computing, but I don’t get anywhere near that time. I recommend using the power cord if gaming, as the 4 cell battery gets eaten up quickly, if not plugged in.
Screen. The full HD screen looks very sharp. It is crisp and bright, but it is just that: a 1080p screen. It isn’t the latest and greatest 4k screen. Furthermore, it is also not a touchscreen, if you are interested in having that feature. While neither the Intel UHD Graphics or the nVidia 1050 GPU could game at 4k, they would be able to provide a 4k image for normal activities and a 4k display would be super nice.
RAM. While no slouch in the speed department, the laptop could prove even faster with the addition of another 8GB stick of DDR4 RAM. Only one module is installed. Installing another DIMM should allow the computer to operate in dual channel memory mode. Dual channel operation would not provide huge performance increase, but it would provide an increase none the less.
Power Connector. The Acer uses a large power brick that plugs into the right side of the laptop with a standard barrel connector. However, I always have problems getting the connector inserted into the receptacle. Enough that I get a little anxiety each time I plug it in to charge, fearing that it will break. This is the only laptop I’ve experienced this with, even though the connector looks like there is nothing wrong with it. Not sure what the issue is and not sure how long the connector will last.
CONCLUSION
All things being considered, this is a very good laptop. I am impressed by the speed and performance. The CPU and GPU are efficient and have proven very capable at any and all tasks I have asked of the computer. The motherboard has open spots for an additional hard drive and an additional DIMM. I do wish it had a 4k touchscreen display, but then that would drive up costs substantially. In reality, the only true complaint that I have is battery life. The 4 cell battery is nothing to write home about and is marginal at best. If you can live with the short battery life, or consistently have a power outlet handy, I think you would be served well. If this laptop had a larger capacity battery, I would absolutely give it 5 stars, but will give it 4 as of now.

Immersive & Very Entertaining

My experiences with prior VR phone-based hardware had tempered my expectations for this device. However, that quickly changed once I put it on. This is a truly entertaining piece of hardware.
SET-UP
Initial set-up is accomplished via the Oculus app available for both Android and iOS. The app walks you through setting up your Oculus account, connecting to the headset, connecting the headset to your wi-fi, and updating the headsets’ software (if necessary).
When you first put on the headset, Oculus includes a handy tutorial on how to use the system. Oculus teaches you the basic button and controller combinations for pointing, grasping, moving, etc. The tutorial includes a couple of different practice “games” that are quite entertaining and after a few minutes, even a novice will have the skills and concepts down.
USE
Before starting your games, Oculus includes a Guardian program to outline your gaming area. Using a low resolution image of the room, you outline your playable area, including the floor. This is to help prevent injury or property damage. The headset will monitor where you are within these predefined boundaries. Get a little too close to an edge and a grid will show up on your screen to alert you. Get a little closer and the area turns red as a final warning before stopping the game and making you move back into your predefined area before you can resume playback. Very nice.
After downloading and installing my first game, Vader Immortal, I was blown away. The interactivity that this headset provides is a game changer. You no longer sit in front of a screen and use a controller. This product puts you into the game. The world around you is in full 3-D and interactive. Want to see what’s going on around you? Move your head and look around. Want to pick something up? Reach out with your hand and grasp the object. Need to flip a switch, turn a lever, climb a ladder? Reach out with your hands and do it. The 6 degrees of freedom that Oculus touts with this product is something that is hard to describe and must be experienced to appreciate.
Head movements and controller tracking are spot on. The games and apps change their perspectives with your movements and gestures. The headset includes stereo speakers and the audio is positional as well. Voices, ambient sounds, etc move around in relation to the way you turn your head. Totally immersive.
Battery life on a full charge is approximately 2 hours of constant playback. The headset is rechargeable via an included USB-C cable and charger and each controller uses 1 AA battery (included). Thankfully, the Oculus dashboard displays the current battery percentages of the headset and both controllers.
FINAL THOUGHTS
This is a very good product. The ability to move, look around and interact with your environment without wires or cords is awesome. Images are bright and detailed with little pixelation. I have had no issues with any apps, videos, or games I have downloaded and played. Everything has worked without issue. While it is true there is not a ton of apps and games at present, there is still a decent variety available and most folks should be able to find something that they like.
I would definitely recommend this product.

Sharp Text and Graphics

This is my first HP printer in some time. I have used them in the past and they have been OK, but lately I’ve been using models from another manufacturer. Things have really changed for the better since my last HP printer.
SET-UP
Setting up the printer was a breeze. I downloaded the HP Smart app to my iOS device and it walked me through the set-up process step-by-step. Getting the printer configured, loaded with ink, paper, and finalizing settings took about 10 minutes max. The whole process went without issue. Anyone, even the less technically savvy, should easily be able get the printer up and running without fuss.
PRINTING
I will admit, this printer creates very nice and detailed documents. The printer uses a 4 tank set-up for ink and HP claims output at 10ppm in color and 20ppm for black and white with a maximum resolution of 4800 x 1200 dpi. My first test was with a 29 page document (using HP’s default settings) that had some photos, colored fonts, and text. Total print time was 2 minutes and 54 seconds. HP numbers appear to be spot on. Text is sharp and crisp. The photos were clear and vibrant with little, if any, pixelation from the ink droplets. Very nice! I have had no issues printing with any desktop, Android, or iOS device. Windows 10 instantly recognized the network printer after my PC’s were booted up. The necessary drivers were automatically installed without intervention or issue. The printer also supports Air Print for iOS devices too. This is especially nice for guests who don’t need to install an app just to print.

SCANNING / COPYING / FAXING
The printer supports a maximum scanning resolution of 1200dpi. My scans have all been crisp and colors seem to be captured and represented very well. The ability to scan to several different services (Google, Dropbox, etc) is convenient and much appreciated.
The copy function works as promised. The printer supports a maximum copy resolution of 600dpi and all my copies have turned out great. Pages are copied and reproduced quickly. For larger documents, the printer has a 35 sheet Auto Document Feeder (ADF). I have fed dozens of pages through the ADF and have not had a page fail to feed or have one load slightly crooked.
HP claims a maximum fax resolution of 300dpi, which is very common for most machines, but I have not been able to test the fax functionality.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Like I stated before, this is my first HP printer in quite some time and I have come away impressed. Technology has really improved even since I bought my last office printer just a couple of years ago. Not only can this printer do what my older printer can do, it does it in half the size. Text is much crisper and photos are vibrant and lifelike. Factor in the ease of set-up, the ability to print, copy, and scan to and from sites and devices with little more than a button push, and the 8 months ($40 credit) that HP includes, I feel it is a very good buy.

Excellent Performance, but is that enough?

This product performs better than any other 4k Blu-ray player I have ever used. But I have one major reservation about it that I will reveal at the bottom in the summary.
SET-UP
The back contains 2 HDMI outputs, one for A/V, one for audio only. This feature is rarely seen on anything but the premium players. The back also has provisions for USB, Ethernet, and coaxial digital outputs.
I always like to go into every piece of equipment I get and manually tweak the settings. Thinking I can do it better and not rely on the machine deciding in its Auto functions. I went against tradition and let the Sony set itself up with Auto, as I think most people will. Aside from an odd Dolby Vision option, the Sony hit it spot on first time. Other than the one DV oddity; Wi-Fi, video, and audio options all went without issue. Super quick and easy. About 2 minutes total.
PERFORMANCE
I was hooked on the first press of the eject button. Lots of folks say you can judge the quality of a product by the behavior of its media tray. If that is the case, this is a great piece. The tray ejected and loaded nearly silently. Disc access was quick and very muted, not a distraction like other players. No more sounds of jet engines spinning up with this Sony.

As I stated in my opening line, this is the best performing 4k Ultra HD Blu-Ray player I have ever used. I have it hooked up to an LG OLED TV and the performance of the HDR10 and Dolby Vision 4k Blu-Rays are outstanding. Blacks are inky and bright scenes in a light controlled room are almost too bright. There is outstanding definition in the darker scenes and the shadow details. Bright scenes are very bright, but still retain fine detail with no visible banding, something that is often missing in other players. This player also does a unique SDR to HDR conversion that Sony claims improves picture quality of SDR material. I normally don’t like a processed image, but I feel this made a subtle and discernible improvement.
The X800M2 supports all major HDR formats: Dolby Vision, HDR10, and HLG. In addition, the player also supports the major surround sound formats: Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, and Dolby TrueHD, to name a few. Audio performance was just as clear and pristine as the video playback. Dolby Atmos and DTS soundtracks sounded great. This player has many more audio / video features and playback options. Far too many for this review. Needless, to say, if you have a file, this will probably play it and make it sound or look better.
The Bluetooth feature is a nice touch. The unit easily paired with my Sony headphones and I was able to watch movies silently. Great for late night binge watching and not wanting to disturb the family. I noticed no discernible lag in the Bluetooth transmission compared to the picture.
NEGATIVES
First and foremost, if a majority of your video collection resides in the cloud, this may not be the unit for you. It only supports 3 streaming services: Netflix, Prime, and YouTube. Nothing more. Even more frustrating is that to enable these 3 services, you must agree to allow Sony’s terms of service stating they can see your viewing habits.
I was able to lock up the player. Trying to find some HDR videos on YouTube, toggling back and forth between videos, rewinding and fast forwarding, I eventually locked up the player. Totally unresponsive. I had to unplug the unit and wait a little bit before plugging back in. Problem solved. I’m sure it is nothing an app update or firmware update can’t fix.
Dolby Vision must be toggled either on or off. I wish for an Auto option on this setting (I can’t believe I just said it). The unit will not auto switch between HDR10 and Dolby Vision automatically based on source material.
SUMMARY
As I have stated before, I really like this player. It is well built, and the audio and video performance are excellent. Far better than my players that are only a couple of years old. With the SDR to HDR image enhancements and 4k up conversion, audio and video processing have been getting better and better.

Why only a 4-star review after all the good words? I will say: value. Is this a great player? Absolutely. But is it better than a similarly priced XBOX or Sony’s own PS4? I’m not so sure. Even though the picture is slightly better than my XBOX, the audio performance is only on par. Add to that, the XBOX and PS4 can play Blu-Rays (the XBOX will play 4k Ultra HD Blu-Rays and supports HDR), plus can play hundreds of games, and have apps for nearly any and all streaming services available today. I find recommending a standalone Blu-Ray player hard to do.
My opinion: if you only want outstanding audio/video quality without all the extras, I don’t think you will be disappointed by this player. It really is a great product. However, for the same price or similar amount, you can get an equally impressive XBOX or PS4. These devices, especially the XBOX, have almost as good video quality, identical audio quality, and can do so much more.

A very good value

Quick Overview - The ear buds have a fairly stiff plastic strap that goes behind your neck and connects the two drivers. On that strap are two plastic pods. One pod I assume is the battery, and the right pod contains the charging port (micro USB) and audio controls. There are only 3 buttons, so each button serves more than one job. Controls are fairly straight forward, but does take a few times to get them down. Due to their location, I was unable to look down and see the controls, having to rely on feel. After using them for about 15 minutes, the controls become second nature. The box includes an assortment of silicone tips to help fit the drivers in a wide variety of peoples’ ears. Each individual ear bud is magnetic and they can be stuck together when you don’t have them on for hanging or storage. Nice touch.
Positives - The Bluetooth audio is clear and detailed, even when listening at moderate volume. The product is super easy to pair to both Android and iOS devices. The controls for the headphones mostly work as promised. The ear buds vibrate during a phone call, pause your music, and announce the caller’s phone number. They also announce the status of your buds, pairing, etc. Very nice. The pods have a built-in microphone that can be used to answer calls or speak to your Google Assistant or Siri. Conversations are very clear and callers stated they have had no issues hearing or understanding me. Most of my calls take place in an office environment where ambient noise is minimal, so windy days could prove more challenging. The buds support Bluetooth 5.0. Bluetooth 5.0 is more energy efficient than prior versions, so you can get longer listening time with less battery. Note that Bluetooth 5.0 is backwards compatible if your device doesn’t support the protocol. Battery life is rated at 8+ hours and I routinely get a good 10 hours before needing to charge them.
Negatives – Once pushed a little too hard, these buds quickly give up and distort. Returning the audio to a lower level does clear things up once again. Unfortunately, even with the pre-programmed EQ curves, don’t expect any significant bass. While not necessarily a negative, it must be noted that this product does not have any form of noise cancelling technology built-in and relies completely on a good seal in your ear to suppress ambient noise. Speaking of ambient noise, my Android devices seem to cause the headphones to emit a slight hiss a majority of the time. It isn’t terribly loud, but is noticeable mainly during quiet passages in songs and podcasts. Oddly, it isn’t all the time. It will shut off for a few seconds then there is a slight pop and the hiss returns, only to randomly repeat the cycle. I did not notice this behavior with any of my iOS devices. Lastly, voice assistants. I have had absolutely no issues with iOS devices and these ear buds. Double click the center button on the right pod and Siri immediately opens up. The mic works well and Siri understands what I am asking. Responses to my questions and requests are also clear and intelligible. Super slick. Android was another issue. I am unable to get the product to open the Google Assistant no matter what I try. Maybe you will have better luck, but I tried numerous times and ways and have still been unable to get the ear buds to open the Google Assistant as indicated in the documentation.
The final verdict is that I would say these are definitely good replacement ear buds. The audio quality and value are quite good. These headphones offer a lot of features: Bluetooth 5.0, IP66 sweat resistance, easy access to voice assistants, vibration alerts, and voice guidance. For listening to podcasts, news, or music at the office or the gym, these are well worth your consideration, especially if you use an Apple product.

Does this laptop have a MUX switch?

Good Evening,

I don't believe so. Unlike other laptops, that have both integrated graphics for the main display and an aftermarket solution (AMD or nVidia) for an external display, this laptop appears to be use the onboard, integrated graphics at all times.

This package includes two in-wall speakers with paintable grilles; when painted, the speakers almost disappear into the surrounding space. The included Sonos amp provides 125 watts of power per channel, which lets you enjoy high-resolution sound from the Sonance speakers. A metal back box is provided to hold the in-wall power kit, Sonos AMP®, and system electronics with extra room for streaming video devices like Apple TV® or Roku®.

Can you attach a sub to this system as well for extra bass, or are you stuck with just the 2 included speakers? And is the amp powerful enough for a sub?

Good Evening. Yes, you can pair a sub with this system. Using the Sonos app, you can add a Sonos sub or the amp has a line out to add a sub via line out connection. The sub will have to be self powered, the Sonos amp will not supply power to drive the sub.
