After battling with AT&T for 3 weeks to get reliable phone service I decided I needed a change. I did not want a contract, so I skipped Vonage. Plus, I had a less than stellar experience with their service a while back.
I hooked up my Ooma Telo and used it for a week before porting my old number over. Then, my number was ported in about a week and a half.
I love this device. It really works very well. It looks nice. I have been very happy with call quality. I love being able to blacklist numbers so I am not bothered by calls from those numbers. I love the service that minimizes marketing calls.
Also, I have not had a call drop yet. Sound quality is very good. The voicemail service works well.
Plus, it is so much cheaper than my old phone line and long distance service. I have already paid for the Telo device with savings in less than 4 months.

I have had two Ooma telo boxes. Both have had failure of the built-in speaker. The speaker is important for use of the voicemail feature. There are other ways to hear your voicemail - use the phone or internet, but the easiest is to use the unit itself. The unit is built for this with touchpad buttons on the top and initially worked well.
The first Ooma telo failed after about 6 months with complete loss of sound through its built-in speaker and was replaced under warranty. Unfortunately the second telo failed in the same way but now was past the 1 year warranty period. After multiple calls to customer service, the only recommendation was to buy a new unit. Needless to say, after two failures in a row, I was not about to lay out another $250 for one of these unreliable units. No other lower cost option (such as repair) was offered by the company.
The unit still works to provide VOIP service, but with its additional answering machine functionality gone, I have canceled my $100/yr "premier" service. I will continue with the basic service for now but am keeping my eyes open for other options.
What's great about it: Voice quality acceptable, many optional features
What's not so great: Hardware unreliable, expensive to replace

I had Vonage for 2 years and had constant problems with sending a fax. Most companies use PC fax now and require a good VoIP connection. After hours on the phone I gave up and switched to OOMA. What a difference it made with the voice quality !! I paid almost 37.00 $ each month incl. taxes and other fees for Vonage. With my OOMA service I pay as little as 3.57 $ a month ( inludes 911 service ) and I use my home phone alot due to bad AT&T cell reception. Give it a try and if you don't like it you have 30 days to take it back to B.B. I would def. recommend this service to anyone trying to save money and get great home phone service.
What's great about it: Price, voice quality, works with any phone
What's not so great: Nothing so far.... after a few months of use

I highly recommend this product. Please, save yourself some money and forget about paying monthly bills for lifetime. With the money you save, get yourself a mobile data plan (which is what I did) or faster home internet connection, or just keep the money you saved. You have option to add the premium features if you are addicted to them. Personally, I didn't feel the need for extra/premium features since I mostly use my cellphone. I switched from cablevision to Ooma and never felt the difference at all; the call quality is phenomenal. You can use your existing phones with ooma telo which is also a big plus because you don't need to buy new phones. You can also keep your existing phone number by paying a one time fee of $40 (takes around 3 weeks to completely port the number; make sure not to cancel you existing service until the porting gets completed with ooma). Ooma is better than magicjack (which require PC to be on at all times), vonage and optimum voice. I have used them all and let me tell you, once you go with ooma, you will never look back. If you don't believe me, read all the reviews on other website and look at how happy ooma customers are. Plus, I saved a lot of money by switching to ooma. You only pay $12 per year, which is a mandatory regulatory recovery fee. Please, make sure you have a good internet connection though (esp. upload speed). For advanced users, you can setup Qos on your router for dedicated connection to ooma.

Ok we just got done waiting the 3 weeks to port our old number! All systems go now! You can be up and running in 15 Min's if you change your number. We wanted our number to stay the same. So that's 3 weeks for Verizon to give it up but it's worth it! OK hidden charges, yes there are but it's not bad at all, here's the break down! You have to pay the taxes. Under $12.00 a year. We went with the Premium. The Premium cost $119.00 a year. Then starting the second year it's $119 plus $17.00 for the taxes. Premium taxes are more. So the free one cost under $1.00 a month and the Premium one cost $9.92 a month the first year and $11.42 a month after that. It cost $39.00 to port your phone number but if you get the Premium they pick up the $39.00 port fee. We are canceling Verizon on Wednesday. So I'll let you know if there are any exit fees involved. It cost a lot up front. We paid $199.00 for the base and $49.99 each for three handsets, totaling $149.70 for handsets. So $349.69 total at best buy. Look at the Best Buy ad this week and its the normal price but you get one free handset. So the cost is the same in the long run. You'll want at least one of their handsets if you go with the Premium because you get two phone numbers then. If someone is using the phone you just press line two and you can dial out with their handsets, so they are worth it. Yes you get two phone numbers with the Premium. So far we LOVE it! How can you go wrong. It's not free really but hey almost!!!!!!!!!!
What's great about it: Cost for month "CHEAP"!
What's not so great: It's not really free but hey I want the company to stay open!
I would recommend this to a friend!

The Ooma Telo is no longer a free phone service like the old Ooma. They have implemented a $12/year fee for new users. You can no longer get rid of phone bills after you pay $250 for the hardware.
The description says you get Caller ID. While technically true the Caller ID is only numbers. To get Caller ID Names you must pay for the $120/year premier service. This is one of the features Ooma gives to old customers but makes new customers pay extra. Unless you are Rain Man what good are caller ID numbers without the names?
Ooma gives old customers voicemail. You must pay $50/year for voicemail or $120/year for premier service to get this feature with the Telo. This makes even less sense as the Telo has handsets to replace your current phone system. With no voicemail you can hardly replace your home phones with the Telo unless you pay $120/year on top of $250 for the hub and $50/each for handset.
The Telo handsets are advertised on the Ooma website as HD voice quality, twice the quality as your current home phone. What they don't tell you is the HD voice is only between other Telo handsets. Otherwise its just regular quality.
Ooma gives its other product customers free live phone support. Telo owners must pay $20 an incident or $40/year to speak to someone at Ooma. Anyone replacing their phone service with VoIP shouldn't rely on forums to wait for answers to their questions. Who knows how long you could be without phone service until some other customer answers your questions. If you buy phone support be ready to speak with someone in India that reads from a script. Ooma has recently outsourced their support to cut operating costs. The support is horrible.
Good VoIPs have an included service that forwards phone calls to another number when your Internet connection is down. Ooma only offers this feature to premier customers willing to pay $120/year.
Telephone or cable phone companies will port your number for free. Be aware you must pay Ooma $40 to port your phone number to their service. Its another fee that isn't disclosed upfront.
Ooma has moved so many basic features to their premier plan that it is almost necessary to buy the $120/year premier plan. For $250 you get a dial tone and caller id numbers. Anything else expect to pay more to Ooma.
Don't be fooled by the promise of free phone service. Its no longer true with the new Ooma Telo. Be ready to pay to set it up properly with your current number and pay more after the 60 days of trial premier service is shut off.
What's great about it: Nice design
What's not so great: Fees, fewer free features, horrible support, bad customer service

I rarely use my home phone but I do use it occasionally when I work from home. Also, I use my home number for doctors, dentists, auto mechanics, service providers, etc so that they don't have my personal cell phone. I bought MagicJack when it first came out but when I started working from home more, I needed better quality and better consistency so I switched to Vonage for 3 years or so. I don't like paying monthly for home phone service so I recently switched to Ooma. I have been satisfied so far. It did drop a couple of calls early on but for the most part, it has been clear, reliable and consistent. Based on the price I paid and discounts I had, I should breakeven and get returns in about 4 months. I am pleased.
What's great about it: No monthly bill
What's not so great: Initial price is a little high

I purchased about one month ago, and so far so good. I purchased this due to my Comcast phone bill being $49.00 a month, so in 4 months it will pay for its self. I elected to take a new phone number; it is a pain if you want to keep your old number. I recommend this for anyone who still wants a landline, and reduce their bills. Thanks OOMA and Best Buy…
