Windows 7 does indeed have an in-place upgrade path to Windows 8.1 however the first thing you will want to do is run the Microsoft free Upgrade Assistant Tool which is available for Windows 7, Vista, and Windows XP which by the way goes dark, with support, security updates, patches and software support in just a few months April 2014.
The tool is located in Microsoft's website be searching for Upgrade assistant tool on Microsoft -(dot-_com or you can use this shortlink by typing this in your web browser address bar: bit.ly/check8up
If you have any of these Windows 7 Operating Systems: Starter, Home Basic, or Home Premium you can upgrade to Windows 8, or Windows 8 Pro. (Now version 8.1) .
If you have Windows 7 Professional, or Windows 7 Ultimate, the only supported upgrade path is Windows 8 Pro.
Please note; the current OS is version 8.1, and the upgrade from 8 to 8.1 is free for those already using 8. The free upgrade is located in the “Store” app. If you do not see the 8.1 upgrade from Microsoft Corporation, you will need to run all ‘Important’ Windows Updates and reboot. Unlike the past, Windows updates are not vetted and go through a strict quality assurance testing process. The ‘important’ updates are normally release once a month and will help to improve performance, fix known issues / caveats, ensure your operating system is stable and most importantly, patches and secures your computer against known and potential threats!)
In order to upgrade to Windows 8 Enterprise, you will have to have a valid Microsoft Volume License running on the computer you will be upgrading which is shows as active and a valid Microsoft Genuine Product in your ‘My Computer Properties’ which was purchased from the Microsoft Volume License Center ( VLC ) of a Volume License provider and Microsoft Partner. To upgrade to Windows 8 Enterprise, the Operating System MUST be one of the following Windows OS: Win7 Pro (Volume License), Win7 Enterprise (Volume License), or Windows 8 (Volume License).
The MOST IMPORTAT thing you can and will ever do BEFORE upgrading to a new or different version Operating System is to… BACK UP AND VERIFY ALL of YOUR files!!!
Windows 8 is fast, it’s fun once you get the hang of it, and most importantly it is the most secure and stable Operating System available on the market today!
